HIS EYES chapter 9

Excited for chapter 9? I am!!

Disclaimer: I do not own: the characters of Avatar.

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow on anything it touched. The light reflected in Aang's eyes as he fell asleep. The day had been tough, and tiring. His head fell against Katara's shoulder. He had been chased, shot at and scared half to death, and he was only six years old. That is too much in a day for one so young.

"I'm going to go put him somewhere quiet," he heard Katara say followed by a grunting noise. He felt a cool hand on the back of his head and another, matching, on his back. He guessed they could only be Katara's but he was too tired to check. One bounce after another, they entered the house.

Katara looked down at Aang snuggled close to her body. It had been a long day, he had to be exhausted. She wandered down the halls of Iroh's house. He said she could put him in the guest bedroom. Now, if only she knew which bedroom that was. She wandered into the living room. Oh well, the couch looked comfy enough. Aang had slept on a couch before, twice! She set him down gently. Finding a blanket, she placed it on top of him and crept out of the room.

She wandered to the front of the house and stopped. Something wasn't right. She studied the front door. Was it supposed to be open? She didn't think so. Hadn't the officer told them to keep the doors locked? A chill went down her spine. Someone was in the house.

Suddenly a hand grabbed her from behind and covered her mouth.

"Don't move," her captor whispered in her ear. His voice was a small hiss, like snake venom.

Suddenly out of the shadows another man appeared. A man Katara recognized. Her eyes narrowed dangerously.

"You don't look too happy to see me," Ozai whispered circling around her. Katara lurged forward but her captor held her still. Ozai smirked and disappeared into the living room. Katara struggled against her captor. She jerked and flung herself but his hold would not relinquish. She managed to get one hand free and elbow him in the stomach. His hand left her mouth for a second but not long enough for her to scream. Matters only got worse as Ozai returned carrying Aang. Angry tears formed in Katara's eyes. She told Aang she'd protect him and she wasn't about to break that promise.

"Bring her along, Zhao," Ozai commanded.

Zhao led her outside where the van was parked. She kept her eyes on Aang. He was limply hanging off Ozai's shoulder. She wasn't sure if he was still asleep or unconscious. Ozai walked toward the van. No! She wasn't about to let him get away with this. As hard as she could, Katara through her head back and bit into the hand that was covering her mouth. Zhao removed it quickly and let go of her. Katara took her chance and screamed as loud as she could. She heard yelling from the backyard. Zhao pushed her roughly to the ground. She pushed herself up on her elbows. There was a gun pointing straight between her eyes.

She heard the ruffling of leaves behind her and a few short gasps but she was focussed on barrel of the gun.

"Nobody moves," shouted Zhao, who held the gun. Katara shook with fear. Nobody breathed for a moment. Everything was silent. Katara shut her eyes tight not wanting to look up at the dark hole any longer.

Aang squirmed in Ozai's arms, being woken up from the scream. He didn't know quite what was going on but he knew one thing. He wanted to be in Katara's safe warm arms. Not this man's tight, cold, grasp. He saw her be pushed to the ground; he saw the gun point between her eyes. He saw his father get shot in the chest; he saw his mother fall right beside him. His eyes narrowed in hatred to the man who held the gun.

These eyes were not his own. They belonged to a monster that lived deep inside him. The monster came out with so much rage, Aang could not stop it.

Katara felt the wind pick up. The cool gusts of air sent shivers down her spine. She could feel the gun still pointing at her. The tears crept up on her and slipped through her eyes, but dried by the wind before they had the chance to fall. She didn't want to die. She wanted this to all be a horrible dream and wake up the next morning ready for summer vacation to start, but that wasn't the case. The wind continued to blow against her. Suddenly she heard a shout and more yelling followed it. She opened her eyes. There was no gun. She didn't see the darkness of the bottomless pit anymore. But, then, where was it. She sat up quickly. The wind blew hair in front of her eyes. Pushing it behind her ears she looked for the one person she wanted to see.

The wind kicked up dirt all around her. She shielded her face with her hands.

"Sokka!" she cried. Her brother was standing less than a foot from her but the wind was too strong to move very far. "Sokka," Katara called again, "what's happening?"

"It's Aang!" Sokka yelled over the wind. He had seen Aang glowing before but not like this. Whatever happened, it wasn't good.

Sokka had heard the scream and immediately he knew who it was.

"Katara!" Sokka screamed running to the source of the sound. When he got there Katara was lying on the ground, gun pointed right between her eyes.

"Nobody moves," the man holding the gun yelled. Sokka looked around for something to use. Then he spotted Aang. The poor kid must be scared half to death. He was giving Ozai a hard time trying to keep him still. Sokka had to think fast. He had to do something to save his sister and Aang. Sokka tried not to notice how the wind had picked up. He tried not to stare when Aang's eyes lit up in a bright, omnious light, but that was impossible. He shook in his spot the same as everyone else. Ozai was thrown to the ground and the other man, Zhao, was blasted into the side of the house by an invisible source. But, whatever had taken over Aang was not about to stop there.

Katara looked up at Aang, squiting through the dirt flying through the air. He was wrapped in a sphere of blowing wind and his eyes were glowing. She had never seen him like that; so powerful, vaunerable, so afraid. It shadered her heart into a million pieces. Determination took over all her emotions. Aang was in danger and she promised to protect him.

She stood up and made her way toward the centre of the swirling wind. He was suspended a couple inches above her head. She reached up and grabbed one of his hands. His angry gaze was turned upon her but she did not let go. She inhaled some of the dirty air. Shutting her eyes she pulled on the hand, guiding Aang back to the ground. She wrapped her arms around him, afraid if she let go, he would rise out of her reach. She held the little boy close to her in the centre of the sphere. She could hear her beating heart even over all the noise. She noticed Aang becoming limp, his head falling, once again, against her shoulder. The wind died down and the sphere disappeared.

"It's okay, Aang, I'm here. I'm okay... shh... you're safe," Katara cried as Aang wrapped his arms around her neck. She hit the ground on her knees, crying and rocking Aang back and forth. The light coming from Aang's eyes dimmed and completly vanished. His grip became loose and he fell into unconsiousness.
