Its been a while so this is where we left off last time

"Paul," she said.

"So you have plans tonight?" he asked.

"Yeah I have a date." She told him.

"A date," he said, he hated the thought of some guy putting his hands on her, some guy kissing her when it should be him.

"Yeah, he's going to pick me up at seven."

"What's his name?"

"Matt."

"Does Matt have a last name?" Paul asked.

"Why are you so interested Paul?" she asked curiously.

"Well I want to know who's ass to kick if he hurts you or tries something you don't want him to." He told her and she smiled.

"Paul I'll be ok," she said. "Don't worry."

"Aviana, not only are you my roommate but you're my friend, I'm going to worry about you while you're out with some strange guy I don't know."

"Well that's really kind of sweet Paul but I promise I'll be ok."

"Ok but just, if you need me I'll be there to come get you or whatever you need ok."

"Thanks Paul."

CHAPTER 9

Sometimes I wish I were a little kid again, skinned knees are easier to fix than broken hearts.

After eating lunch Ava made her way back home so she could get ready for her date with Matt. Embry made his way over to where Paul was standing off by himself.

"You knew she was going to date again," he said.

"Doesn't mean I have to like it," Paul snapped.

"You know how you can fix this?" Embry said. "Tell her how you feel."

"Not going to happen Embry," he sighed.

"Then be there for her when the date doesn't end well."

"You don't think it will go well?"

"No because I don't think she really wants to go out with this guy," Embry told him and walked away.

That night Ava dressed in jeans and a pink sweater for her date. He said it was just dinner so she hoped she was dressed ok. Paul hadn't returned home from Sam's yet, so at seven there was a knock on the door and she opened it and saw Matt on the other side looking better than she remembered. He was dressed in jeans and a button down shirt.

"Ava," he smiled. "You look beautiful," he told her and she smiled.

"Thanks."

"You ready?"

"Yeah, lets go," she said and closed the door behind her and they walked to his car.

When they got to the restaurant Matt took her hand in his and led her inside, they were soon shown to a table and left to look over menu's.

"So have you lived in La Push you're whole life?" he asked.

"Yeah its nice I grew up with everyone I'm friends with now, we all went to school together."

"So you like in there?"

"Yeah, why wouldn't I?" she asked.

"Its small."

"And that's why I like it," she told him. "Everything I need is there," she told him as a waitress walked over and they ordered something to drink and their food.

"So what happened with you and your ex?" Matt asked. "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to."

"He just found someone else," she told him.

"Well that sucks for you," he said.

"Yeah well I should have seen it coming, all the signs were there I just refused to see them because I loved Jake so much." She said softly.

"I'm sorry that happened to you," he said

"I'm really ok with it now," she told him.

After dinner Matt walked Ava out to his car, placing his hand on her lower back to guide her and then slowly sliding it to grab her ass. Ava stepped aside out of his grasp but he moved closer to her to wrap his arm around her. When they finally got to his car Ava was glad to be away from him.

The drive back to La Push was quiet until Matt parked the car outside her house. He turned it off and walked her to the door.

"Ava, I would definitely like to see you again."

"Matt I…" she began but didn't get to say anymore because he leaned down and kissed her. As he moved his lips against hers she tried to push him away but he wasn't getting the hint, he let his hand run over her back and across her butt. She finally gave him a shove and he broke away.

"No Matt," she told him.

"You're serious?" he asked shocked

"Yes!" she exclaimed, but he kissed her again and ran his hands under her shirt. He pulled away.

"Invite me in," he whispered.

"No way!"

"I know you want to," he said. "Invite me in its ok."

"I'm not inviting you in and I am definitely not sleeping with you."

"We're adults Ava, invite me in." he demanded.

"So because we're adults and we had one date that wasn't even that fun I'm supposed to sleep with you!"

"Yeah," he smirked.

"Not going to happen," she told him, "now leave." She demanded and turned to open the door but he grabbed her arm to stop her.

"Let go of me!" she demanded but he pulled her closer and squeezed her arm.

"Ouch! Let me go," she told him trying to pull away as the door flew open.

"What the hell is going on?!" Paul yelled.

Paul was sitting on the couch watching TV, waiting for Ava to get back so he could make sure her date went ok when he heard noises coming from the porch. He stood up and went to see what was going on, he could hear what they were saying, it was Ava back from her date.

"Not going to happen," Paul heard Ava say "now leave." She demanded "Let go of me!" Paul heard her say "Ouch! Let me go," he heard her say again and that was enough for him to yank the door open

"What the hell is going on?!" Paul yelled and he saw Ava and the guy had her arm in his hand.

"Paul," she said relieved.

"I believe I heard her tell you to let her go," Paul told him. "So I suggest you do it now," Paul demanded.

"Who is this guy Ava?" Matt asked.

"My roommate."

"You didn't tell me you had a guy roommate," he said.

"Its none of your business." She said trying to pull her arm out of his grasp

"Is he why you won't invite me in?" he spat.

"No Paul has nothing to do with that, it has everything to do with I don't want to," she told him.

"She's told you no. Now are you going to let her go or am I going to have to make you," he growled. Matt looked up at Paul, it was clear from the expression on his face that he didn't want to fight with him so he let her go giving her a push but Paul caught her and wrapped an arm around her waist. "Now get lost!" he told him and pulled Ava inside and closed the door.

When he closed the door Paul let go of her and she turned around and looked at him.

"You ok?" he asked concerned.

"I'm ok," she assured him. "Glad you were here."

"Me to." he said.

"Did he hurt you?"

"It's fine," she told him.

"You sure?" he asked concerned.

"Yeah Paul," she sighed. "I'm going to change clothes," she told him and stood up and went to her bedroom. She grabbed her pajamas and went to the bathroom to change.

Paul leaned back on the couch when Ava walked out of the room. He was so glad he decided to come home because he didn't even want to think about what could have happened if he hadn't been here. Ava could have been seriously hurt if he hadn't been here to stop that guy who was obviously not going to take no as an answer.

Ava walked back in the room after changing and sat down by Paul. He looked over at her.

"You're sure you're ok?" he asked and she nodded.

"Yeah I am," she whispered. "I'm really glad you were here Paul, I don't know what would have happened if you hadn't been here."

"I'm glad I was here Ava," he said. "So how about you be more careful about the guys you choose to date from now on."

"Yeah definitely."

"You want to watch a movie or something?" Paul asked.

"Ok," she agreed and Paul smiled and started scrolling though the channels.

"Anything you want to watch?" he asked and she shook her head. "Ok then." He said and just stopped on a random channel.

"Ava, do you need or want anything?" he asked worried.

"Paul I'm seriously fine, don't treat me like I'm broken."

"Ok if you say you're ok you're ok, I'll drop it."

"Thank you," she said and they fell silent and watched the movie. They had been watching the movie about thirty minutes when Paul's cell phone rang. Paul picked it up from the table and answered it.

"Hello," he answered.

"Paul," it was Carlee again. "Last night was fun."

"I guess," was all he said.

"Maybe you can come over tonight to," she said huskily.

"I have plans," he told her.

"Cancel them," she told him.

"No," he said.

"Tomorrow then," she said.

"Carlee, its not going to happen," he told her and glanced over at Ava.

"Paul!" she whined.

"Carlee don't call me again!" he told her and hung up the phone. Ava looked over at him.

"Paul," she said softly and he looked over at her. "You don't have to stop doing stuff you want just because I'm here."

"Ava I'm not, I really don't want to go meet her." He told her. "And do you seriously think I would leave you after what happened?"

"Fine Paul," she sighed and turned away from him.

"Ava," he said frustrated. "You want me to go?" he asked and she didn't answer. "Aviana, you want me to leave?"

"No Paul," she said softly

"Then what do you want?"

"I don't know," she told him.

"Ava," he said.

"Maybe I shouldn't have went out tonight," she sighed. "Maybe I shouldn't date at all."

"You can't let one bad date keep you from dating," he told her. "just be more careful next time."

"I will Paul." She said. "I think I'm just going to go to bed." She told him. "Thank you," she said softly and leaned over and kissed his cheek. "Good night Paul."

"Good night," Paul replied and she turned and walked away. When she was gone Paul touched the spot on his cheek she had kissed and smiled.

The next morning when Paul walked in the kitchen Ava was making pancakes.

"Morning," Paul said.

"Morning Paul," she said. "Want some pancakes?"

"Do you even have to ask?" he asked and she smiled and handed him a plate with pancakes piled on it. "Have you eaten?"

"I'll join you in a minute," she told him and he smiled and went to the table and sat down. A few minutes later Ava sat down with Paul.

"Really good pancakes," Paul said.

"Thanks," Ava smiled.

After breakfast Ava and Paul cleaned up the breakfast dishes before going to work.

"Be careful at work today," Paul said.

"I will Paul," she said.

"I'll stop and pick up something for dinner tonight ok."

"Sounds good," she said. "See you tonight."

"See you tonight." He replied and they both left the house and headed to work.

When Ava got to work she saw her friend Kira.

"So did Matt call you?" she asked.

"Yeah he called, we had dinner last night."

"So how did it go?"

"Well it went great until he took me home and I wouldn't invite him in," Ava told her.

"What happened?" she asked.

"He wanted to come inside and I said no, I know what he wanted, he wanted me to sleep with him and I…I just can't," she told her. "He got mad and grabbed my arm, he was actually hurting my arm, if Paul hadn't been home I don't know what would have happened."

"Paul?" Kira asked. "Wait a minute your roommate is a guy?"

"Yeah, I've known him for years," Ava told her nervously tucking her hair behind her ear. "We haven't always got along but I trust him and know he won't lie or try to tip toe around my feelings right now like other people would."

"And what is this Paul guy like?" Kira asked curiously and Ava smiled.

"He's really sexy and he…." She began.

"Damn it I have a meeting today, meet me for lunch I want to hear about this Paul guy."

"Ok."

For lunch Kira and Ava met at the pizza place right down from where they worked. After getting their food they sat down at a table and Kira looked across at her.

"I want to know about Paul. Is he single?"

"Yes and he's really sexy and he's been a really good friend and he's actually a great guy," she told her. "A lot better than I though he was," she admitted. "He's funny and charming and treated me really well and he's got dark brown eyes and a beautiful smile." She sighed. "he has six pack abs and really muscular arms, he's practically perfect."

"Oh my god!" Kira exclaimed. "You're in love with your roommate!"

"No I'm not," Ava argued. "Yeah I've had a crush on him since before Jake asked me out but he would never like me like that."

"You never know," Kira shrugged. "Maybe you could just hook up with him," she suggested.

"No Kira I'm not going to sleep with Paul."

"Why not you two have the perfect friends with benefits set up, you live together," she told her and Ava shook her head.

"I can't say it hasn't crossed my mind but that won't happen with us."

"Never say never," Kira told her. "I'd love to see what he looks like."

"I have a picture on my phone," she told her and took her phone out and scrolled through her photos until she came to one of Paul on his motorcycle and she showed it to Kira.

"Oh wow! You're going to pass this guy up. If you don't want him can I have him?"

"No," Ava said quickly. "And I never said I didn't want him."

As Ava was leaving to go home that afternoon she heard someone calling her name behind her. She turned around and saw a guy named Bryan walking over to her.

"Ava hey," he smiled.

"Hey Bryan," she replied looking up into his bright green eyes.

"So you doing ok?" he asked.

"I'm good," she said.

"Good," he replied. "So would you be interested in going out with me on Friday night?" he asked.

"Bryan I…."

"It will be fun," he said.

"Ok," she agreed and he smiled.

"Great, I'll talk with you later this week," he said.

"Sounds good," she agreed. "I'll see you later." She told him and turned to walk away.

"Ava wait!" he called out. "How about a movie tomorrow night?"

"Ok." She agreed. "I'll just meet you there tomorrow night."

"Seven ok with you."

"Seven sounds great," she told him.

That night when Paul got home he brought Chinese food with him.

" I'll change and we can have dinner," he said.

"Sounds good to me," Ava said.

When Paul came back downstairs Ava had the food set out for them and they sat down to eat.

"So how was work?"

"Good, I have a date tomorrow night."

"Oh another date," Paul replied.

"Yeah we're going to a movie," she told him

"Is he picking you up?"

"No I'm meeting him there and I'll be fine Paul, don't worry."

"You'll call me if something happens."

"Yes Paul, don't worry its just a movie."

"I'll try," he said.

The next night Ava dressed in a pair of skinny jeans and light blue sweater to go meet Bryan. When she walked in the living room Paul was there. He looked over at her, she looked way too sexy to be go meeting some guy who he knew didn't deserve her.

"Be careful and call me if you need me."

"I will Paul," she promised and she grabbed her jacket before walking out the door.

When Ava got to the movie theater she saw Bryan waiting for her in front of the movie theater. He looked really nice in his polo shirt and blue jeans. His blonde hair was messily styled, she smiled as she walked over to him.

"Hey," she said.

"Ava you look beautiful," he smiled.

"Thank you," she said.

The two of them went into the movie theater and took seats and waited for the movie to start. So far everything had went really well during the movie. They were over halfway through the movie and that's when Ava felt Bryan's hand on her knee, he slowly moved it to her thigh, slipping his hand to the inside of her thigh. Ava laid her hand over his and moved it off. Ava thought Bryan got the hint because it didn't seem like he was going touch her again but when they got further in the movie his hand went to the inside of her thigh again and she moved it off and grabbed her purse before standing up and walking out of the theater. Bryan followed her all the way outside.

"Ava!" he called out.

"What?" she asked as she turned around.

"Why are you leaving?"

"Did you not get the hint when I moved your hand the first time?" she asked and he just shrugged. "Nothing is going to happen between us."

"Loosen up a little Ava," he said as he stepped closer to her and laid his hands on her hips. She tried to push them off but he gripped them harder. "Or you'll never find another boyfriend."

"Let go of me," she told him. "We won't be going out Friday," she told him.

"Its your loss,"' he said and walked away from her. Ava shook her head and turned and went to her car and drove home.

When she walked inside Paul was on the couch. He looked over at her.

"How did it go?" he asked and she shook her head.

"I'm sorry Ava," he said and she walked over and sat by him.

"If all of my dates are going to be like the two I've had I don't want to date."

"Ava…you just….you haven't met the right guy yet." He said and she smiled. "How about we go out Friday night and I'll show you how I would treat a girl if I actually dated and how a guy should treat you on a date."

"Are you serious?" she asked surprised.

"Yes I'm serious Aviana," he smiled. "How about it?"

"Ok," she agreed and he smiled. "I would love to see how you would treat a girl on a real date."

"Yeah me to," he said and she shook her head.

"Paul."

"I'm kidding I know how I would treat a girl I cared enough about to take on a date." He told her.

"Ok well I'm going to change and go to bed." She told him.

"Good night Ava,"

"Good night Paul."
