Chapter Eight: Battle of Heliopolis
Heliopolis General Hospital, Maternity Ward
Kira beamed as she held the small bundle of joy swathed in a soft, powder blue blanket in her arms. "He looks like you, Ryu," she informed her husband, who couldn't seem to keep the amazed look off of his face. "Our little Shiro -chan looks so much like his father…"
"Definitely your eyes," Ryu informed, grinning goofily at his wife. "He just… looks so small…"
"All babies are small after just being born, Ryu," Kira replied with a smile. "And according to the doctors, he's about average size and weight for a newborn."
Ryu still looked rather… boggled by the fact, it was amusing actually, one of the toughest Mercenaries out there who had found actual proof of alien life, was boggled by the natural experience of a birth. "Still, it's just… amazing that he is the product of us," he informed, shaking his head slightly. "It's just really… amazing."
"Yeah, it is," Kira replied. "Still, I guess I'm a bit more used to it, seeing as how I've been carrying him for nine months."
"And that in itself is by far the most amazing thing," Ryu informed with a smirk as he sat slightly on the bed she was laying on, his arm wrapping around her shoulder as his voice dropped to a whisper. "Kira… this is my oath to you," he told her, his voice solemn. "No matter what happens, I will protect the both of you, no matter what, you and Shiro will live."
"Thank you, Ryu," Kira whispered to him, "but I intend on doing a bit of protecting, myself - just because I'm a mother doesn't mean I can't pilot anymore."
"I know," Ryu informed with a soft smile as he held his wife. "I am not suicidal enough to stop you from that, but, it doesn't change my oath," he enjoyed the embrace with his wife for a few more minutes before sighing. "Do you think we should finally introduce him to his aunt and uncle? Jade's been really chomping at the bit."
"Sure, that'd be fun," Kira replied. "But hopefully it can wait a little bit - I have to admit this is a nice hospital, but I am really wanting to get out of here and back to the Mugen Kano."
Ryu chuckled. "Hospital Policy, unfortunately," he reminded. "They just need to ensure that the baby is fine before you two can come home, the doctor said you can leave the hospital tomorrow."
She sighed. "Alright," she muttered. "I'm definitely looking forward to coming home, though."
Next day, Hospital Front Desk
Ryu smiled as he watched his wife sign the papers for her and Shiro's release from the hospital, it was easily noticeable by the way she wrote that she was quite anxious to finally leave, when his phone started to ring. Checking the ID, his eyebrow raised as Kira looked over, Ryu jerked his head towards the door, indicating where he would be, and turned to answer the phone. "What's up Maes?" Ryu asked as he opened his phone.
"We've got trouble, Ryu," came Maes Hughes' voice over the phone. "We were doing some tests on the improved sensor settings and we picked up ships outside the colony, in a spot where the colony's sensors wouldn't spot them… ZAFT ships."
"Send an alert to the ORB Defense Command," Ryu ordered. "Tell Morgenroete to start packing up and have Victor prepare to sortie outside of the colony, get the Vidar and Valkyrie prepped for combat as well."
"Roger," Hughes replied. "Also, we managed to get a ship count and ID. One Laurasia-Class, the Gamow, nothing fancy there, and… one Nazca-Class, ID'd as the Vesalius. Victor actually took off for the hangar as soon as we got that ID, muttering something about 'old Mask Face', or something like that."
"Rau le Creuset… new addition here, Maes, get three squads down to Morgenroete," Ryu ordered. "And tell the ORB Defense Command to begin evacuation now, my guess is we now have a strike team within Heliopolis."
"Gotcha," Hughes replied. "Do we want to contact Jinn, let him know the situation? He, Flay, and their little group have come up with quite the little contingency plan in case this happened, after all."
"Do it, send a warning to Jade and Shinn as well, apparently Morgenroete is scouting the two of them as Test Pilots, apparently they're getting a factory tour," he informed. "Me and Kira will be at the Mugen Kano in no more than fifteen minutes."
"Understood," Hughes replied. "Vidar and Valkyrie will be waiting for you. Maes out." The connection cut as Maes hung up, to begin the rest of the notifications.
Ryu turned just in time for Kira to exit the Hospital, carrying Shiro in a car basket for the ride back. "ZAFT is on the doorstep," he informed. "Creuset is in command."
Kira frowned. She and Ryu had both heard the stories from Victor about 'old Mask Face'. "That's not good," she replied. "We'd better get back to the ship - I take it Jinn, Flay, and Shinn are getting notified?"
"Along with Morgenroete and ORB Defense Command," Ryu informed as they strapped Shiro into the backseat of the jeep and began heading towards the ship ports. "Maes is also going to take three squads to the factory and aid in securing the prototypes."
"Gotcha," Kira replied. "Creuset's going to learn he picked the worst of times to attack… and hopefully we can keep him from his goal."
Terminal R&D Base, Discovery, Command Center
"Commander Odin!" the communications officer of the base shouted out. "Emergency broadcast from Heliopolis, Mercenary Guild Fenrir has detected ZAFT ships hiding in the resource asteroids surrounding the colony!"
'Odin' immediately started barking out orders. "Have the Gungnir's crew prepare to launch ASAP! We haven't had a formal test of the ship or her prototypes, but this'll have to do - we can't let ZAFT cause too much damage to the colony, or capture any of the EA's G-Weapons!"
"Yessir!" The officer replied as he set out about his task.
"I shall be accompanying you, Commander," Aeolia announced as he entered the room. "I feel that I should be on hand for this crisis."
"Very well, Director Aeolia," 'Odin' replied. "How many of the Prototypes are ready to go? I know the Tempest was fully completed two weeks ago…"
"They are all combat ready and are being loaded onto the Gungnir as we speak," Aeolia informed. "Squadron Leader Falcon will be briefing the pilots en route."
"Good to hear," 'Odin' replied. "I have a feeling we might need them." The two then left the command center, headed for the Gungnir as it prepared for launch.
Gungnir, Pilot Briefing Room
"Alright, listen up flyboys and girls!" Yuna Falcon shouted out to the Mobile Suit Pilots onboard the Gungnir. "We have a Class-Two Emergency at ORB's Resource Satellite Heliopolis, ZAFT has been poking around and it is confirmed that ZAFT Commander Rau le Creuset is in command of the task force, we believe they will be attacking Heliopolis as soon as they confirm the EA G-Weapons are there, our role is to convince them that it would be a bad idea."
"Understood," Takeshi replied from his seat. Linda was currently on the Bridge, making her own preparations as the ship's Mobile Operator. 'So much for Heliopolis being safe for Flay…' he thought, moderately worried about his sister-in-law, but not as much as he might have - he knew his own sister would be there, and Flay's last letter to Linda had mentioned she had some kind of contingency plan in the works.
"I know that several of you have family on Heliopolis," Yuna said, giving a pointed look to Takeshi. "But Morgenroete is working in conjunction with the Mercenary Guild Fenrir, and while we have not been able to get many details, Fenrir is now in possession of highly advanced Mobile Suits and will be standing by in case of attack, included with this information is the information that several students at the Technical College on Heliopolis have caught wind of the G-Project and have put several plans into place to secure as many G-Weapons as they can to ensure ZAFT cannot steal them."
Takeshi was a little shocked at that, though he didn't show it. At least now he knew what Flay's contingency plan was about… he just hoped she could pull it off. "Hopefully Fenrir will leave some for the rest of us," he remarked out loud.
Yuna shot him a grin. "Well, one of the founders is a friend of one of my old squadmates, and he said if I were to ever to cross paths with him, duck and cover," she informed. "We probably should be more worried about ZAFT at this point. Anyways, Prototype pilots, your units are loaded onto the Gungnir and if you scratch them, you'll be the one to tell old man Aeolia." she clapped her hands. "Alright everyone, get suited up and man your stations, we're going to war!"
Takeshi nodded, standing up and heading to the adjacent locker room to grab his Normal Suit, a custom design colored dark blue with black trim and a black torso.
"Hey, Yamato!" Yuna shouted out as she entered the change room. "Concerning the mission, will you be able to keep an even head in an emergency?"
"No promises, but I'll do my best," he replied as he was getting into his Normal Suit. "And no, it wouldn't be because of worry about my family there, Kira can take care of herself and Flay is likely one of the students behind that plan to secure the G-Weapons. The reason I make no promises about keeping an even head is, well, I've always been a bit of a combat-fueled adrenaline junkie."
"Very well then," she replied with a nod of her head as she pulled out her white and red pilot suit from her locker. "So long as you can remember our objective and keep working towards it then I have no problem with whatever adrenaline you consume."
"Gotcha," Takeshi replied as he finished zipping up his Normal Suit. "Well, I'm gonna mount up. Good luck out there, Commander!" Grabbing his helmet, he headed out of the locker room to get to the hangar, where his brand new machine awaited.
Heliopolis Technical College
Flay, Jinn, Tolle, Miriallia, and Sai were currently in one of the smaller labs, working on various programs for the G-Project. Hanami was there as well, along with a person in baggy clothes and wearing a cap, who was supposedly waiting to talk to Professor Kato.
After his conversation with Kira and Ryu, Professor Kato had come clean to his class, and offered them paid internships if they wanted to officially contribute. As per their plans, Flay, Jinn, Tolle, Miriallia, Sai, and Shinn all signed up, and Hanami had also signed up, after Jinn had returned her datapad to her and Flay and Mir decided to bring her into their contingency plans. She was still a little reluctant to join in, but decided to follow anyway since she had no idea what else she could do about the situation.
"It's time," Jinn announced to the others as he pulled a series of flash drives from his computer. "Maes sent a message that ZAFT was spotted."
Halfway across the lab, Hanami stumbled, almost dropping a bunch of instruments that she was carrying. She barely managed to catch herself, a noticeable shudder running through her. "I know we spent so long preparing for this… but still…"
"I know," Flay remarked. "I was hopeful we'd have more time… Jinn, I'm assuming Shinn and Jade are being notified, too?"
"Yes, they are enacting their phase as we speak," Jinn informed as he pulled out several hard drives from assorted computers before laying out the assorted flash drives. "These are the updated OS's. Everyone take one."
"Right," Flay said as she picked up a drive. "Just plug them in and it'll automatically upload?"
"Yes, they are all specced towards your own skills," Jinn informed. "Tolle, yours is specced to the Duel, Mir, yours is towards the Buster, Flay, the Blitz, my own is specced to the Viral, Shinn has one specced to the Strike while Jade has one for the Exceed, Hanami, are you sure you wish to go through with this? If not, then Sai is capable of taking your place."
The silver-haired teen swallowed loudly as she stepped forward. "I… I'll be fine. I can stick to just aiming for anywhere other than mobile suit cockpits, right? I won't let all that time I spent practicing be wasted..."
Jinn nodded as he handed her the final flash drive. "This is to the Exodus, then Sai you will acquire the Aegis," he informed. "Is everyone ready? They'll be sending the Duel, Buster and Blitz out in less than 30 minutes, we need to secure the units before that and get them to the Mugen Kano, from there we can escape and perhaps draw ZAFT away from the Colony as we make our way to ORB's mainland."
"Right," Flay replied. "Remember, if there are ZAFT infiltration teams attempting to steal the prototypes, leave them to the Fenrir Marines - we've trained for this, but only in Mobile Suit Combat, not Infantry warfare."
"But… what happens if the infiltration teams are persistent in chasing us and there aren't any Fenrir Marines nearby?" Hanami tentatively raised her hand. "And what if they get into the prototypes' cockpits before us?"
"I have already sent out the lockout codes," Jinn informed. "They are quite impossible to move without those specific flash drives installed, think of them as a key, without them, the Mobile Suit will not start."
"Right," Flay remarked, heading for the door. She then paused, turning to the other occupant of the room, the Professor's guest. "Hey, if I were you, I'd get to the Shelters," she called out to them as the rest of her group gathered around her at the door.
"Who the hell are all of you?" The person demanded, her golden brown eyes flashing angrily. "How is it you all know about what Morgenroete is building here, why are you planning on stealing them?"
"Jinn and I are immigrants from the EA, who came here to escape," Flay answered. "Our families were rather high up in the government, so we'd first heard about it while still there, and it didn't take us long to figure out it was being made here. As for stealing them, we don't want the EA or ZAFT to use them, and Jinn got a message from a friend in the Fenrir Guild that ZAFT is outside the colony, likely preparing to attack. We need to move quickly, so again, I'd suggest you head for the Shelters."
"H-hold on here!" the person started, before Jinn stepped in front of her.
"While I admire your passion and am honored to have met you, Lady Attha," he informed with a bow of his head. "But please, ourselves and the Fenrir Mercenary Guild have been preparing for this for over a month now."
The person, shocked slightly, sighed before taking off her hat, allowing her blonde hair to fall freely, and revealing the features of Cagalli Yula Attha, daughter of Uzumi Nara Attha. "Alright, but I'll stick with you until we pass by a shelter," she announced. "I'd rather not take my chances out there by myself."
Jinn nodded. "By my estimations we have around an hour before ZAFT launches their attack," he announced. "Brother and Victor will be launching outside of the colony to intercept the ZAFT forces, hopefully before they can enter the colony while Kira will remain on standby in case they do slip inside."
"Of course, depending on the ZAFT Commander, it could be more or less," Tolle remarked. "I've done a bit of reading up on them, and they're about as diverse as you can get."
"Whatever the case, the sooner we get this done, the better," Flay replied. "Let's go!"
Morgenroete Testing Facilities
"Outta the way!" Jade shouted as she and Shinn sprinted through the hallways as the Morgenroete technicians were busy with purging the database of all traces of any of their valuable technology. "Shinny, keep up!"
"Right!" Shinn replied, doing his best to match her speed. "The sooner we get to those hangars, the sooner we can do our part to secure the G-Weapons!"
"Yup," Jade announced as she vaulted over a cart laden with objects, shocking the person pushing it. "You got the drive Jinn gave you, right?"
Shinn nodded, even as he dodged around the same cart. "Yeah," he replied. "You have yours?"
"Of course!" Jade responded, an almost child-like glee filling her voice. "I've been waiting to get my hands on the Exceed for some time now!"
"Yeah, I know," Shinn replied. "Hopefully we'll be able to secure them in the Mugen Kano without much hassle, but this is one of those situations that Murphy just loves."
"So don't tempt him!" Jade shouted in return. "Up on the left here!"
Shinn nodded, as the two made the turn Jade had indicated.
Jade paused as she looked around the hallway they entered before checking her watch. "Jinn and the others should only be a few more minutes before they get here," she informed. "Our objective is just through this door."
Shinn nodded. "Do we wait here, or enter through the door now and make sure everything's secure for them?" he asked.
"Wait for them," Jade informed. "Remember, this is a pretty much a blitz play, we rush in, and while they're surprised we all hop into a unit, if ZAFT is there, hopefully it'll work for them as well."
"Gotcha," Shinn replied. "Here's hoping they get here soon."
"Jade, I see you've made it on time," Jinn said as his group came up beside them. "Are you two ready?"
"Yeah, we're ready," Jade replied, before noticing that there was an extra member of the group. "I see you picked up someone else, though… who is she, and how did she join practically last-minute?"
"Lady Cagalli was here to most likely grill Kato about the G-Project," Jinn informed. "We were going to shove her into a shelter, but we never came across any."
"Great…" Shinn muttered. "That means we have the Lion of Orb's daughter stuck with us, and only enough OS's for our group… she's going to have to ride with one of us."
"She will ride with me," Jinn informed. "The Viral is not a direct combat unit, and with the Mirage Colloid System we won't be found easily."
"Alright," Flay replied. "We know what we have to do - let's go in there and do it."
There were nods all around, and Shinn opened the door, the group entering the hangar beyond as quickly as possible.
Jade reached into her shoulder bag and pulled out a special flashbang. "Cover your eyes!" She told her friends before popping the pin and throwing it into the room.
They managed to get their eyes closed in time, for the neural flash used by O.M.N.I. Commandoes that caused blindness from direct exposure for a minute and a half within a radius of 350 meters.
"Let's go!" Flay said as they moved into the hangar, hoping to get into the cockpits of the various machines in the hangar before the flashbang wore off.
"Lady Cagalli, please get behind the seat," Jinn advised as the pair jumped into the Viral. "It'll be dangerous, so hang on tight."
Flay hopped into the Blitz, plugging in the Flash Drive to update her custom OS. 'Here goes nothing,' she thought to herself as the machine began booting up.
Shinn, meanwhile, was slightly annoyed as the Strike started up. The reason? "You'd think they'd have more weapons on this thing aside from those 'Striker Packs' they thought up," he muttered, "but nooooooooo… just those Igelstellungs and the Combat Knives… I sure hope those Marines can get their hands on a Striker Pack for me, otherwise I'm rather close to dead weight."
"This is… AMAZING~!" Jade squeed as she prepped the Exceed for launch. "Oh My God~ They actually did manage to add in the Hyper Impulse Mobility Thrusters~. It'll go so fast~!"
"Everything's looking good so far," Tolle remarked in the Duel. "I'm definitely glad we managed to get these OS's together - I'm looking forward to seeing what this thing can do."
"Looks like all systems are green," Mir murmured to herself as she started the ignition sequence for the Buster. "Man, no wonder Jade can be so giddy when talking about the Exceed, sitting behind the controls of such a powerful unit… kinda exciting."
"Green, green, green, gree- damn," Sai muttered in the Aegis. "Looks like they still had a couple bugs in the transformation system. I can fight well enough in MS Mode, but Fenrir's gonna need to do some work on it before it can use MA mode."
Meanwhile, Hanami was having more trouble than she expected with the Exodus. On her way over, she had stolen a handgun from a blind and flailing technician with a quickly muttered, "Sorry!", but when she managed to climb onto the Exodus' hips she was faced with a foreign voice in the open cockpit.
"Move, goddamn it! I can't go back to the Vesalius empty-handed!"
Hanami froze immediately - if someone was already in her cockpit… The flashbang must've missed him… She gripped her stolen handgun tighter and jumped onto the cockpit hatch, pointing the gun inside at the pilot seat. Inside the cockpit sat an individual wearing a red ZAFT pilot suit.
"What… a civilian?" the ZAFT commando reacted immediately, pulling out his gun.
"NO! GET AWAY!" Hanami gasped out loud, closing her eyes, looking aside and pulling the trigger as many times as she could before the empty clicks of the magazine began to sound.
By the time she had gathered up the courage and the knowledge that she wasn't dead to open her eyes, the commando had several holes in his helmet visor, which was now splattered with blood. She wasted no time climbing into the cockpit, pushing the dead body aside and plugging her flash drive into the machine.
It didn't take too long for her adrenaline rush to wear off, though. "I… I killed…" Hanami cradled her head in her hands. "I… I… I didn't mean to… I'm… No…"
'If you can't handle it, then step aside and let me take care of everything.'
Everything went black for Hanami.
Mugen Kano, Mobile Suit Catapult
"So… fatherhood, huh?" Victor asked as their units were moved to the Mobile Suit Catapult. "Nervous?"
"For battle, never, I could face fifty fleets all comprised of nothing but aces, and not even flinch," Ryu replied with a deadpan. "Fatherhood, scares me shitless."
"Don't be," Kira soothed. "You'll make a good father, Ryu, and I'm looking forward to raising our child together with you."
"So am I, hun, doesn't mean it doesn't scare the shit out of me," Ryu informed, completely unashamed by his words. "So, ready to enact a war, Victor?"
"Yeah, let's take old Mask Face down a few pegs," he remarked as his machine locked into the catapult. "Victor Amsel, Odin, launching!"
"Ryu Hisanaga, Vidar, targeting the enemy!" Ryu called out as his and Victor's units were hurled down the catapult and launched out of the ship and towards the colony entrance/exit. "Kira, keep an eye out for Jade and Jinn's group, should all be going according to plan, they should have captured the units by now."
"Understood," Kira replied. "Be careful out there, Ryu."
"Roger that," Ryu affirmed as he and Victor left the Spaceport. "Alright, entering ranged mode!"
The Vidar's V-crest slid down, revealing a high powered sniping camera as he brought the Extreme Long Ranged Particle Beam Rifle to bear. "I got your back, Victor!"
Victor nodded, sending his machine at the ZAFT Mobile Suits which had just begun their approach.
"I don't see Creuset's unit anywhere, I don't think he launched yet," Ryu informed. "Let's see if we can force him out!"
Ryu pressed the firing trigger, causing a beam to lance across space and pierce through the cockpit of one of the GiNNs. "One for me!"
Victor drew the two katanas on his unit's waist, the blades glowing as their blades heated up, and he sliced through a pair of GiNNs in front of him. "Two for me!"
Ryu grinned. "Let's get this party started!" he shouted out as the GiNNs started their attack.
Heliopolis, Morgenroete Hangar 13
"God I hate it when I'm right."
Ethan ran towards the center of the hanger, where lied what looked like an airplane with a reverse wing design. Dressed in his custom black and gold pilot suit, he dashed into the open cockpit of his personal machine.
As he turned on the cockpit, he noticed that one of the technicians was waving at him. "IS THE INDRA FUNCTIONAL?"
"Let's see. All systems nominal. My baby is ready to go."
The tech gave the former ZAFT commander a salute. "Godspeed Commander."
Ethan snorted beneath his mask as he powered up the suit for launch. "Where's Fenrir?"
"They've launched! They're in combat!"
"Hopefully they've saved some for me. I wouldn't want to get bored out there after all." Ethan smirked. His smirk disappeared as he looked forward. "Everyone get clear!"
The hangar doors opened to reveal a tunnel that terminated into the vacuum of space. Ethan then took a deep breath. "This is Varrick in Indra. LETS GET IT ON!" He slammed the pedal into the floor as the black and gold transformer shot down the tunnel. "WOOOOOHHOOOOOOOOO!"
The technician could only watch as the Indra departed the hanger with a massive blast. "Damn, I've got to get me one of those."
Cliff overlooking the G-Weapons Factory
"What do you mean they've already been stolen!?" A blue haired, teal eyed teen wearing a red pilot suit shouted as he and his squad looked over the building. "Who the hell stole them!?"
"No clue," replied a green-haired, violet-eyed teen next to him. "We're not getting any responses from the commando that was already there, so we know they aren't ours. The only other information we have is that our informant in the hangar briefly saw what looked like civilian teenagers before a modified flashbang went off."
"Hey hey hey!" A dusky-skinned, blue-eyed, blond-haired teen shouted out, getting their attention. "I can see them!"
"Looks like they stole all of them, even that Mobile Armor the Naturals were building," a silver-haired, blue-eyed teen remarked. "Well, Zala, what do we do now? I mean, those machines are our goal, but if they've already been taken by civilians…"
Athrun Zala frowned as he considered their options. "I really don't know," he admitted. "If we end up killing ORB civilians it would be a political shitstorm around the level of Junius Seven!"
"Agreed," the green-haired teen, Nicol Amalfi, added. "On the other hand, there's the question of just who those civilians are, and why they stole them… There are too many variables for us to act rashly."
"Yo, aren't they heading to the spaceport?" the blonde, Dearka Elsman, asked. "Y'know, the one that the Commander said housed that Merc Guild?"
"I think you're right, Dearka," the silver-haired teen, Yzak Joule, replied. "Which means that they're either members of that guild, or affiliated with them. Well, Zala?"
"Pursue them for now," Athrun informed. "If they do land on the guild's mothership we'll infiltrate and steal the units from there."
The entire squad nodded, before moving to follow the prototypes.
In the Cockpit of the Viral
"That… went surprisingly well," Jinn informed, sounding suspiciously surprised. "Everyone, report in."
"Strike here," Shinn replied. "Hopeful Fenrir's Marines can snag a Striker Pack for us - I don't like having just Head Vulcans and Combat Knives."
"WAHOO!" Jade shouted as the Exceed streaked above them. "Exceed here! And it is fast! Although… Hanami! You alright, I heard some gunshots near the Exodus trailer!"
"Exodus here. I ran into a bit of trouble, but it's been dealt with," came the reply in an unusually even and calm voice.
"This is Buster," Miriallia reported. "Looking good here… and are you sure you're ok, Hanami?"
"Fine as I'll ever be. Why are you asking?" the Exodus's pilot replied in the same tone.
"Blitz here," Flay remarked. "Looking good so far… and Miriallia's right, you're sounding much different than normal, Hanami - nowhere near as nervous as you usually are. That's not normal."
There was a short pause before Hanami replied, "Let's just say I… finally woke up."
"Aegis here," Sai reported. "Things look good so far, but we'll need Fenrir's techs to go over this thing to finish the transformation feature… and I think we might need a more detailed explanation, Hanami, but it can wait until we've parked these things."
"Roger that. Hanami out," the silver-haired pilot signed out.
"Duel here," Tolle remarked as he brought up the rear. "Systems are looking good, but we've got some company - I've spotted a bunch of people in ZAFT Normal Suits, both Red and Green, up on the nearby cliffside - scratch that, they're moving, looks like it's in our direction, but they're trying to avoid being detected as much as possible."
"Leave them for now," Jinn informed. "A few squads of the Fenrir Marines are going to be waiting in the Hangar, just in case."
"Got it," Tolle replied. "Also, I'm kind of liking this thing… any chances you could talk your brother into officially taking me into Fenrir when all's said and done?"
"I can try," Jinn informed calmly. "No promises though."
"I think I'll probably join them as well, if I can," Flay remarked. "Given what we've just done, I doubt Heliopolis is safe for me anymore - might not have to worry about his supporters that much, but I would have to worry about reprisals for helping steal the G-Project."
"If you're joining, I'm joining," Shinn said. "I promised to protect you, and I intend to honor that promise."
"Well, I suppose it would be more interesting than working on codes for Morgenroete…" Sai said musingly.
"I'm in, too," Miriallia added. "Someone needs to be able to keep Tolle in line."
"HEY!" Tolle yelled indignantly, to laughter from most of the group.
Jinn rolled his eyes as he keyed in the frequency of the Mugen Kano. "This is Jinn Hisanaga in the GAT-X221 'Viral' to the Mugen Kano," he called out. "We have secured the G-Weapons and are on approach to the Spaceport now."
"Mugen Kano Control here," the Mugen Kano's Combat Operator, a young woman named Kalee Serenson who had blue hair and silver eyes, replied. "Good work, Jinn. We have Kira waiting near the ship to cover your approach."
"Right, we also appear to have some ZAFT Commando tails on us, probably trying to see where we land to try and steal the units," he informed. "They're sticking to the cliffs for now."
"Roger," Kalee replied. "We'll have some Marines ready if they try to enter the ship."
"We also have an unexpected… guest," Jinn informed. "Lady Cagalli ended up with us, we weren't able to get her to a shelter without endangering the plan."
Kalee was silent for a moment. "Understood," she replied. "We'll probably end up needing to ferry her to Ame no Mihashira or to a Terminal Outpost after all is said and done, so she can be ferried back to Earth safely."
"Understood, Viral out," Jinn confirmed before closing the radio before turning to his blond passenger. "Any complaints, Lady Cagalli?"
"I'd rather not return home just yet," Cagalli replied. "Father keeps saying I need to 'experience life outside ORB', but also keeps me from going to a lot of the places I'd like to go, claiming them 'too unsafe'… I'll probably stay with you for a bit, going back to Orb when I'm ready."
Jinn shrugged, "Just know, if you don't work, you don't eat." he informed. "I run the maintenance on the ship's electronic warfare suite."
"Right," Cagalli replied. "I've been trained in a few things, so we'll see what I end up doing."
Jinn nodded. "There it is, everyone, prepare to dock on the Mugen Kano." he informed the group. "Ah, there's Kira there, above the bridge."
Indeed, Kira's machine was floating above the Mugen Kano's bridge. "Good to see you, Jinn," she said to them over the radio. "Hurry up and get onboard - we're leaving once the Prototypes are aboard - we'll take out as many enemies as possible on our way out, try and drive them away, but we can't stay here any longer!"
"Right," Jinn confirmed as both of the hangar doors opened, allowing the mobile suits and single mobile armor to dock onto the ship, locking the mobile suits into their charging bays while the Exceed was lowered down, under the hangar to the Mobile Armor bay. "We're are secured."
"Anchors away, Mugen Kano is leaving the docks!" Joker announced from the bridge. "We have signaled Ryu and Victor."
"Kira Yamato, Valkyrie, providing cover," Kira replied, before pausing. "Well, well, looks like the ZAFT Commandos are making a run to try and get on the ship," she remarked, as the soldiers in Green and Red Pilot's Suits came blasting into the docking bay at full tilt with help from personal-size Vernier Thrusters
"Marines!" A company commander shouted as he and three squads of fully trained, former O.M.N.I. Commandos, came pouring into the hangar, assault rifles blazing. "Show our uninvited guests the door!"
The ZAFT Commandos returned fire, attempting to dodge the fire from the Marines as they approached the ship, but one lucky bullet clipped the verniers of the lead Red, sending him out of control… and straight at the Mugen Kano's open hatchway to the hangar.
"Secure him!" The commander shouted as the pilot crashed into the ground, hard. "Suppressive fire!"
A pair of Marines came forward, setting up a .50 cal near the hangar entrance and opened fire on the remaining pilots, forcing them to maneuver away, lest they be torn to shreds by the heavy calibre bullets.
And then the hatchway closed, securing the entire ship as they started building up speed on their way out of the dock.
"We are away!" Joker shouted out. "Fire the smoke flares, cover our escape!"
As the ship left the dock, firing flares as it went, Ryu's machine fell back alongside Kira's, maintaining a position above the ship's bridge as it made its way away from the colony, both machines opening up on any GiNNs or CGUEs that got close, while Victor cleared them a path.
In the Cockpit of the Indra
Soren Talbot was honored to be assigned to the Le Creuset team. It meant that one was the best of the best. It certainly helped get him positive attention from all the ladies back in the PLANTs. However, none of that attention particularly helped save him from the large triangular beam lance that bifurcated his suit through the cockpit.
All that was seen by the doomed pilot was a black and gold streak and a symbol on the machine's arm that every ZAFT pilot knew: a tri-pronged knife with two lightning bolts struck through it.
"Amateur." Ethan shook his head as the GINN exploded behind him. He looked around, expecting to see a white CGUE any minute. 'Where are you? I know you are here you masked fuck.'
Suffice it to say, Ethan Varrick was not very friendly with Rau Le Creuset.
Ethan frowned in contemplation. "Only one GINN here? Where is the rest of his team? More importantly, where is the…"
He was interrupted by contacts on his HUD. "So Fenrir's ship is under attack? Well, I can't let them have all the fun now can I?"
Ethan chuckled as the Indra transformed back into Mobile Armor mode and took off towards the fight.
Mugen Kano, Hangar
Jinn looked on from the entrance of the Viral's cockpit as the Fenrir Marines quickly secured the Red Coat Pilot who had crashed into the hangar. "Lady Cagalli, I would suggest we get you up to the bridge, brother and Kira will want to speak with you once we are out of the combat zone."
"Right," Cagalli replied. "Well, let's get out of this thing and get going, then."
Jinn nodded as he stepped out onto the loading platform, shortly followed by Cagalli. As he lowered the platform the others exited their units, save for Hanami. "Wait here," he told Cagalli as he moved over to the Exodus. "Hanami? What's wrong?"
The cockpit hatch opened with a hiss, allowing Hanami to step out. "Just thinking about some things," she said.
"Hana… mi?" Jinn paused as he took in her red eyes and stoic demeanor, his eyes shifted over to the cockpit where the body of a red coated pilot lay crumpled behind the seat. "I see, a combat persona…"
"I… wouldn't really say combat persona. More like… I'm Hanami's darker, buried persona. Killing that commando," she gestured at the body in the cockpit, "-hit her far too much. You've seen how gentle she is, she couldn't handle it. That's why her subconscious created me, to take everything she can't. She can't kill, I can."
"I see," Jinn replied warily. "Then what should we call you?"
"I'm basically a mirror of her anyway… so I guess you can call me Kagami," she shrugged. "And no need to be so tense, I'm not going to eat you or anything. Just… try not to mention Hanami killing the commando around her. I don't want to cause her any more pain than she needs to bear," her expression softened slightly as she looked at the gun holstered at her side, having stolen the commando's holster, too.
"Very well," Jinn conceded. "I will make sure that the Exodus is cleaned out completely, what should I tell her?"
Kagami smiled slightly as she replied, "She won't remember getting in the Exodus, so you can probably tell her that she was unluckily knocked out by some flailing technician or something, and that you had to put her in your cockpit and also lug the Exodus onto the ship."
Jinn nodded in understanding. "I can do that," he informed. "And Kagami… thank you."
"Hmm? For what?" she blinked even as she began to sway, her eyes fluttering.
"Saving my friend." Jinn informed simply. "Even if she doesn't realize it."
"No… problem…" Kagami managed to get out before fell forward in a dead faint, only for Jinn to catch her before she could hit the ground.
Jinn sighed as he pulled her up bridal style and hit the command for the lift to lower. "We need a clean up in the cockpit of the Exodus!" he shouted out to the technicians. "We need it to be completely spotless!"
"Understood!" replied one of the techs. "We'll make sure it's done!"
Jinn sighed and looked down at Hanami as she groaned, her eyes fluttering open to reveal their usual blue. "Good morning sleeping beauty," he greeted. "Are you alright, you took a rather nasty blow to the head from a rather… panicked technician."
"My head hurts…" she groaned, but quickly snapped her eyes open in panic. "But… if I was knocked out… our mission! The Exodus! I failed, didn't I…?"
"No, you didn't, I just had to haul it with the Viral instead," Jinn informed easily. "Stuff like this happens, so don't worry about it."
"I… see…" she settled down before realizing exactly what kind of position she was in. "Eeep," she squeaked as a light dusting of red settled across her cheeks.
"Hm?" Jinn hummed in response as she began to squirm in his arms. "Something wrong?"
"Umm… no… it's no-nothing… I'm sorry!" she stammered profusely. "Can you… can you put me down now?"
Jinn shrugged. "Alright," he replied as he set her down, completely oblivious to her embarrassment. "Just thought you'd want a medic to take a look before you tested your equilibrium."
"R-right… I'll be fine…" the silver-haired girl busied herself inspecting the floor of the hangar, trying to look at anything else other than Jinn. "So… we're on the… the Mugen Kano now?"
Jinn nodded. "Yeah, we're leaving Heliopolis as we speak," he informed, leading Hanami towards the hangar exit where the other former students were gathered. "Also, many of the others were planning on joining Fenrir," he added. "I'm sure if you wanted to you could get a job as a technician on the ship."
"I… I don't have anywhere else to go anyway…" Hanami sighed. "And I… I'm not too comfortable around these mobile suits, so I think I… I'll… Umm… do you need a cook? I'm quite confident in my cooking skills."
"Could probably work," a tech replied. "We don't have too many good cooks on the ship."
"Really?" Hanami exclaimed happily. "I… I'll be in your care!"
Jinn chuckled at the scene. "Well, better than brother and Kira's cooking," he informed. "Amazing pilots and mercenaries they may be, cooks, they are not."
"Just… please don't tell me all we have on board are military rations?" Hanami asked hopefully.
Jinn shook his head. "This is a mercenary outfit, not the military," he informed. "We're fully stocked with a variety of foods, just know this if you do cook though… the Marines tend to get a… little more hungry than the others."
"That's not really a problem so long as I have the proper ingredients!" she spoke passionately, her eyes practically shining with delight. "At least now I won't feel like dead weight…"
Jinn nodded in agreement before he spotted the others. While Hanami was distracted muttering to herself about assorted recipes, Jinn jerked his head in Hanami's direction and shook his head, signaling the others not to mention anything.
The others nodded, though Flay, Shinn, and Jade all sent him a look that said, 'you are explaining what happened to us eventually.'
Jinn shrugged in response before moving on. "We better get to the bridge for now, see if they need any help," Jade announced. "We are still in combat…"
"Makes sense," Flay remarked. "Looks like Miss Cagalli's following Jinn up to the Bridge, too."
"Let's get going, then," Shinn added.
Battle Around the Mugen Kano
"Persistent bastards!" Ryu growled as he fired a series of shots from his rifle before deploying the two DRAGOON Beam Cannons to blast another flanking unit. "Joker, are we far enough from Heliopolis for the scattershot missiles?"
"Not quite, but we should be soon," Joker replied. "Also, we got a warship coming from the same direction which we are going - has Terminal IFF, but it's a design I haven't seen before."
Ryu growled again. "Terminal Ship, this is Ryu Hisanaga of Fenrir, state your intentions!" he called out, using a tight beam broadcast.
"Terminal Ship Gungnir to Ryu Hisanaga, sorry we're a bit late," came the reply. "I take it you've got the G-Weapons?"
"Yes we do, Gungnir," Ryu replied as he ducked around a GiNN, drawing a beam saber from a leg compartment in order to slash the unit in half. "If I may ask, who are you currently working for, ZAFT, EA or ORB?"
"ORB," came the reply. "We got a message from Heliopolis as soon as you told them about the ZAFT attack, and came out to assist as quickly as possible."
"Well, we could use help shaking the persistent bastard off our asses," Ryu informed as he holstered the Sniper Rifle to draw out his beam submachine gun to wield alongside the still drawn beam saber. "And Victor is kinda distracted…"
"I AM GOING TO TEAR YOU OUT OF YOUR COCKPIT AND SHOVE YOUR HEAD SO FAR UP YOUR ASS THAT YOU MAY FIND OUT WHAT YOUR OWN PANCREAS TASTES LIKE!" Ryu winced as Victor's threat echoed through the commwaves.
"Yeah… see what I mean…"
"Don't worry," was the reply. "We'll cover your retreat, our MS are launching now."
"Understood!" Ryu replied as he fired a burst of beams into the gut of another GiNN before a flash of orange caught his eye. "Magic Bullet of Dusk, so glad you graced us with your esteemed presence!"
The orange GiNN came racing straight at the Mugen Kano, firing its machine gun as it closed. "Hard to believe the Dragon would steal stuff belonging to another government," its pilot, Miguel Aiman, noted. "Especially when your new machines seem more powerful than the EA's! Why would you need the G-Weapons?"
"I'm a Mercenary kid! I don't turn down equipment just laying around!" Ryu returned as he launched four of his Beam Assault DRAGOONs to unleash a wave of beam energy at the custom GiNN. "And who knows, maybe I'll find some useful tech in them!"
"I'll grant you that," Miguel replied. "And it does keep them out of EA hands, which is probably a good thing - still, we have orders to retrieve those things ourselves, nothing personal."
"Like I said kid, I'm a Mercenary, nothing is personal in this business!" Ryu informed as he started to create random attack patterns with his deployed DRAGOON Units, throwing Miguel off center.
"Damn!" Miguel cursed as one of the beams blew off his GiNN's leg. "No wonder you were once considered a candidate for the Zero Corps…"
"Try to keep up if you can, kid!" Ryu shouted as he launched the DRAGOON fang units and directed them to charge the GiNN.
"What the-?!" Miguel exclaimed as the new units seemed to move faster than he could see, and he'd soon lost his machine's weapons, arms, and head unit. "Dammit, I'll get you next time! Vesalius, I'm falling back!"
"Gungnir, where are your units?" Ryu asked as he put the beam saber and submachine back and drew out his sniper rifle.
"Entering the area now, Ryu!" came a familiar voice as a machine that looked similar to the G-Weapons, but with a folding sword/beam rifle unit on its right forearm, a longsword/shortsword set on its hips, and a flight unit reminiscent of the 'Aile Striker' unit for the Strike Gundam on its back, came racing in, firing several beam blasts at the approaching GiNNs. "Glad we managed to make it to the party!"
"Takeshi-nii!" Kira shouted from where she was using her Anti-Ship Beam Saber to cut down a pair of GiNNs attempting to use some debris as cover. "Glad to see you!"
"Good to see you too, Imouto," Takeshi replied as he switched the Tempest's Sword/Rifle unit to Sword mode, slicing through a couple of GiNNs. "How're you doing?"
"Considering I just gave birth a few days ago and now am in combat, pretty well actually," Kira informed with a grin. "Let's hurry this up, I want you to meet my little Shiro-chan."
"Gotcha," Takeshi replied.
"Fenrir, this is Linda Yamato, MS Combat Operator for the Gungnir," came another familiar voice. "Is my little sister Flay with you?"
"She's onboard the Mugen Kano," Ryu informed. "She ended up dragging my siblings, her boy-toy, and their friends into hijacking the EA's G-Project."
"We'd heard of that…" Linda replied. "Still, I'm glad she's alright…"
"Ryu! We're far enough from Heliopolis for the Scattershot Missiles!" Joker informed.
"Understood! All units fall back!" Ryu shouted out. "Joker, fire the missiles in one minute!"
The Tempest fell back to alongside Ryu's machine, as did Kira's. "Time for some Fireworks?" he asked. "Should be fun!"
A pair of missiles fired from the Mugen Kano, flying towards the following ZAFT Ships, before the external casings fell off, revealing hundreds of smaller missiles that fired off, completely gutting the Laurasia-class and damaged the engines of the Nazca-class. "Jackpot!" Ryu shouted. "Victor, we're leaving!"
"COCKMUNCHING ASSHAT!" Victor shouted as a trio of heat daggers severed the arm of Rau's CGUE. "I'll finish you later!"
As the Odin pulled away from the crippled CGUE, a sudden streak of green slammed into the forward catapult doors of the Vesalius, causing a large explosion.
"The fuck was that?" Victor shouted as he paused in his retreat.
"Language, young padawan. Language!" A voice with the slightest southern drawl called out.
"Well, if it isn't Ethan Varrick," Victor announced, a slight grin forming on hi features. "I was wondering when you'd crawl out of that hole of yours!"
Ethan grinned while shaking his head, "And that's how you greet your academy instructor after all these years? So ungrateful, young padawan." His grin turned savage as he looked toward Rau's ship. "I taught you well."
"Who're you calling Padawan, huh?" Victor retorted. "As I recall I kicked your ass several times before!"
"Only in your ever loving dreams, boy. Only in your dreams could you have ever beaten me." Ethan smirked. "It's good to see you though. I see you got first blood on the masked asshat?"
"He's a slippery bastard, but yeah, ripped off his arm before he got away." Victor informed. "Ryu, I'm returning to the Mugen Kano, need a ride Ethan?"
"Yes. Yes I do. And when I get on board, we are going to find a way to get that arm cased in gold and mounted on your wall."
Victor laughed as Ryu sighed in his cockpit. "Joker, we're returning with plus two," he informed. "Perhaps a third later on."
"Roger that, also, a heads up, we've captured one of the red coats that attempted to board us when the midgets all boarded the Kano, all we got so far is his name, Athrun Zala."
There was a small gasp from Kira's machine. "No way… Athrun?" she asked.
"You know him, Kira?" Ryu asked, curious.
"He was my best friend back at Lunar Prep School in Copernicus!" she replied. "He's the one who made Birdy for me, just before he was recalled to the PLANTs… the day before I started the path to where I am now."
"I see…" Ryu murmured. "Then, perhaps would you be willing to speak with him, get him to cooperate long enough so that we can release him when we get back to ORB?"
"Could work," she replied. "Once we land again, I'll find where the Marines put him and talk to him."
"Right, I'll be with Shiro then," Ryu replied. "Hopefully Alex wasn't overwhelmed when we suddenly dropped him on her."
"She shouldn't have been - I think she might have been a babysitter before she ever started getting into military duties."
Ryu chuckled in response. "Right, still might want to pick him up before Jade tries to take him, no need to allow her to start her corrupting our son early."
"Good idea," Kira replied, as the two machines entered the hangar.
"I'll see you later sweetie, good luck with your friend," Ryu informed as their suits were locked in.
"Thanks," Kira replied. "I'm probably going to need it."
"You'll do fine with that silver tongue of yours, Kira," Ryu informed. "I'm more worried about myself, I don't know the first thing about kids!"
"We'll both learn," Kira replied as they left their machine's cockpits. "I think that's part of being parents - learning how to raise your children properly."
"Fair enough, still scares the ever living hell out of me though…" Ryu informed. "Pirates, no problem, ZAFT or EA Fleets, bring them on, invading Alien wanna be overlords, troublesome, but doable, infant children, dear god save me."
Kira laughed. "Well, here's hoping those fears aren't valid," she remarked, before the two headed off in different directions - Kira following a couple Marines towards where they'd stashed the captured ZAFT pilot, and Ryu heading off to pick up little Shirou.

The Arms and Legs are those of the Gundam Exia, while the Shoulders both contain Beam Boomerang Mounts like those of the Sword Striker. The Exia's Sword/Rifle, Shield, Longsword, and Shortsword are mounted in the same places they would be on the Exia.
Colors: The Torso is Black with Dark Blue trim, while the Head and Limbs are Dark Blue with Black Trim. The V-Fin on the head unit is the same golden tone it always was.
Info: Designed by Terminal Combat Agent Takeshi Yamato and Aeolia Schenberg for Takeshi's personal use, the Tempest is specialized for High-Speed Close-Range Combat with its seven different bladed weapons. This is to fit Takeshi's personal combat style, and can be downright deadly on the battlefield.
