A/N: Warning! Steamy scene at the end... a turtle becomes a man.
CHAPTER 9- New Frontier
…
Dimension X, in its vast, silent, vacuum of space, floats The Great Cobus cloud. The Great Cobus Cloud embodies millions of galaxies, one of which is the spiral galaxy, X294A. In this galaxy dwells the Shen system, home to a bright, blue star and its six orbiting planets. The second planet from that blue star is the dessert planet, Pozmalia. On the eastern continent of Pozmalia, surrounded by the craggy, Sandstone Mountains, hides an ancient, trading city called Orin. In the northern sector of Orin City stands the famous Laptoli Hotel, where, on the top floor, room 402 to be exact, a Neutrino Freedom Fighter named Kala lounges by the open window, gazing up at the countless, shining stars above.
She's looking past the stars actually, trying to focus on the darkness in between the light, wondering where the gateway to the other dimension will cut its way through. In less than a day she will see it open. In less than a day she will leave this reality behind. In less than a day she will finally be in Michelangelo's arms.
Another sigh from her lips grabs the attention of her roommate, who has been sitting on his side of the suite, polishing his saber, trying to ignore her constant audible breaths up until this point. "Kala, it sounds as if your spacesuit has sprung a leak. Are going to tell me what is the matter or am I going to have to come over there and patch you up myself?"
Kala sighs once more. "I am sorry, Onyx. I suppose I am just anxious."
"Hmph." The crimson-skinned Otot snorts, losing his concentration on his weapon. He sets the broad sword down on the desk and turns to face her. "Have you not been anxious this entire week? If you think you've been hiding it, you would be wrong." He smirks.
Kala peels her eyes away from the sky and looks at the bulky otot. "What do you mean?"
Onyx gets up and strides over to where she sits next to the window. He leans his spiky, gray shell against the pane. "You only stayed at the secondary secret location long enough to turn on the power. Once you told Dask and me that you were going to Earth, you refueled you cruiser and shot off like a comet. Lucky I trailed you and caught up with you. I made you eat something and forced you to rest."
"Yes, well..." She tries to hide her blush. "The window of time I had to make it back to Earth was very slim and very far away. I did not want to miss it."
"Indeed." The white-banded otot cocks his head at her, still smiling. "All for a smooth-shelled turtle from the magical land called Earth."
Kala looks into the otot's purple eyes, studying his meaning. "I have other friends there as well. I am not going back just for him."
"Though, it is primarily he." Onyx adds.
Kala doesn't answer, just turns her attention back to the stars, hoping her cheeks stop burning with embarrassment.
Onyx's smile fades. He had also been a bit anxious during their trip here. Once he had learned that Kala was planning on going back to Earth, he had volunteered himself to accompany her to the portal. Kala was more than capable of making the trip on her own, but despite the rest of the Neutrinos and his otot brethren needing him to help setup the new headquarters, Onyx decided to go with her, however far and long the journey.
And he was glad he had come. On the way, Kala had explained that Donatello's portal would open up in space and the closest place to wait was Orin City. Being mutated by the Kraang only a year before he met Kala and the Turtles on Earth, and becoming a freethinking, learning and growing being, he and his brothers still know so little of the universe. Kala had told Onyx that Orin City is a hub for all illegal dealings in the sect. People come in and out every day, trying to buy and barter anything imaginable. The Kraang know about this city but rarely send troops in to delegate. As far as the Kraang are concerned, Orin City is no threat and neither are the myriad of miscreants trying to make a few coin. Onyx had questioned their coming to such a dangerous place but was told that this was the closest, most-hospitable planet to the portal.
If Kala would risk coming here just to see Earth again… to see that green jokester… just thinking about how foolish it all seems makes him uncomfortable. Fighting for his home from the ones responsible for his existence, Onyx had understood his role and joined in with fervor. He takes pride in taking back what was stolen from his world, takes pride in accomplishing such things with Kala to lead them. Discovering that he had become an emotional creature as well, feeling things that frighten him, he had hidden this fact very well.
But as the sky on the horizon dims to a rich ebony, and the once busy corridors of the market below dies down, and the watchmen light the lanterns at each vacant corner, Onyx finds himself entranced by the beautiful Kala and his frightful feelings begin to overwhelm him. She is leaving tomorrow and he doesn't know when she is returning, if she will even want to return once she has her Michelangelo.
Onyx tries to portray a casual stance, wanting to say what is in his hearts, but he has no idea where to begin. "Kala, would you say that we have been through a lot together?"
Kala turns to look at him, almost missing the sadness on his face that is quickly replaced with a placid smile. "I would say so, Onyx, especially for ones such as you and your brothers. As for what you and I have been through, it is the way of war, good thing you were created for it... it won't be like this always. One day, you will know what peace and happiness really is, it will be constant and not as fleeting as it is now."
"Being a part of the resistance, I have been familiar with peace, even if we have had some dangerous adventures in between." He chuckles lightly. "We have been shot down, almost blown up, bruised and battered... we even shared a cell together for six days before we escaped the Kraang."
Kala sighs with a small grin. "I remember that awful experience. The Kraang threatened to feed us to their giant worms if we didn't tell them where the refugees were. They kept us in darkness and didn't feed us. I was so hungry."
"And I was very smelly."
Kala laughs. "Yes, well, that's to be expected."
"And we kept each other warm… and you kept me sane with your stories… from Earth." He says that last part with a bit of spite.
"But we came out alright. I knew we would escape. We just needed the right moment."
"And we took full advantage. It felt good to tear the robotic arms off of those stupid Kraang bots." Onyx punches a fist into his hand.
"Ah, yes. You did that move many times."
"It works well. Thank you for teaching me."
"I cannot take all of the credit. I learned it from Raphael."
Onyx frowns. I am trying to keep her mind on home but I keep sending it back to Earth. He leans his elbows on the windowsill, not knowing how to turn the conversation around.
"I can't believe that was three years ago." Kala whispers. "Though the fighting has died down, I hope we really are doing enough."
"Of course! Don't you see how much has been accomplished since then? People are free because of you."
"Because of us." Kala corrects him. "I couldn't do any of this on my own. And… it was very good to see my people free, to see that they finally believe. And someday, I may even find my parents among them." She adds sadly.
"I know you will."
She looks at her hands and folds them. "It would be nice for them to meet."
Onyx was about to ask 'who', but then realizes that she was referring to that Mikey again. It makes Onyx wonder how far along Kala and her resistance would be if he and the other otots hadn't joined in. Is he just a big muscle for Kala to flex their way to victory? Does she just see him as one of her willing soldiers? No, that can't be true. Kala treats him too kindly. Under the mind-control of the Kraang, all Onyx knew was pain and rage and degradation.
Kala treats him like they are the same. And her treatment of him is what softens his hearts.
Kala notices the red-skinned otot's silence and turns to look at his troubled face. She had probably made him feel uncomfortable talking about her missing parents. He doesn't even know who his parents are. She tries to lighten the mood. "You know why I made you second-in-command, don't you?"
"Is it because I carry a big sword?" Onyx jokes.
This makes her laugh, and her laugh makes him smile. "Onyx, I chose you because you are a natural leader. Your brothers fall in line, not because they are afraid of you or are because you are the biggest and strongest. You encourage them and bring out the best in them. You do the same for the rest of the Neutrinos."
"I inspire your Neutrinos?"
"We both come from the same planet. You are a Neutrino too. Onyx…" Kala sits up on her knees and places her hands on his shoulders. "I trust you with my life. And those who follow me will follow you. Your origin may have been malicious, but we carve our own destiny. And a leader does their job, even if they are afraid. I learned that from Leonardo."
Onyx sighs within himself and shakes his head. She grabs his attention and places her forehead on his as a sign of thanks and trust. "If something were to ever happen to me or if my time leading the resistance must come to an end, I couldn't place the mantle in more capable hands. Thank you for your service."
Onyx looks into her eyes for while, not wanting to break the thankful gesture and says. "Why would you no longer be leader? Are you planning on going to Earth and never coming back?" He speaks without thinking and sees the bit of hurt in her eyes.
She pulls away from him. "I would never abandon our cause or our people. I will continue to fight until the job is done or until…"
"Until you die trying? I am sure your Earth turtle would have none of that."
To his surprise, Kala says. "I agree. Michelangelo and I have dangerous occupations."
Onyx does little to hide his judgement. "As much as you try to make it sound like his missions are as chaotic as ours…"
"Watch your words, Onyx." Kala stands. "He protects his city from the shadows because he and his brothers are outcasts from normal society, in case you have forgotten. Where you and I would be imprisoned and executed by the Kraang, the Turtles would be captured, studied, tortured, dissected, treated like animals. We have all accepted these risks for the greater good."
Onyx folds his arms. "If it is so bad on Earth, why are you going there for vacation?"
Kala tries not to smile. The truth is starting to come out. "Spending time in a dark, dank, sewer is not my ideal escape. But just like the beaches on Neutron, or the southern lights of Senwhich, or this lovely hotel, we find peace where we can, and enjoy them with people we are fond of."
Onyx's grimace softens as he looks over at Kala. He wants to let the conversation go and ask her if it's too late to order room service, but he can't, not until he says his piece. "The Kraang attacked us just a week ago. We thought they fled, but they are relentless. Your job is not finished yet, Kala, so you are still needed."
"If the Kraang are relentless, than we are doubly so, Onyx. It doesn't matter how many machines they build, or how many planets they threaten, or how many times they try to strike us down. They may take my life. They may take yours, but freedom can never be fettered, and our story, never forgotten."
Onyx is transfixed; Kala's shoulders are level and her eyes are steady. Her words never fail to strike hope in all who hear her. "May the light of Neutron forever burn bright." He whispers.
Kala smiles at him, wanting him to return it, but he just looks like he is in pain. "Is there something else bothering you?"
He looks away. Should he try to tell her? What would come of it? It is getting more difficult for him to breath and form the right words. Kala stares at Onyx as he stares at the floor.
Another moment of silence floats around the room before Onyx gets the nerve to speak. "You know as well as I do that I haven't always been this way. Remember that quick trip we took to Neutron to survey the land and check up on the rebuilding of the great city? You and I went to the beach where the Kraang had abducted my brothers and me. We stood on the beach and watched the regular otots mill about, happy, with out a care in the world... that used to be me not so long ago. Now that I am a mutant, now that I am half Neutrino, I see more, and know more... and want more." He chances a look at her and is surprised to see no conviction or repulsion in her eyes, just understanding. He licks his lips and goes on. "Kala, I do not remember how little otots go through the motions of findins someone special, and I have yet to understand traditions of Neutrinos. I am stuck, struggling in the middle."
Onyx does something that neither little otos, nor friendly Neutrinos do; he does what humans- and ninja turtles- do and takes her hand.
A big lump grows in Kala's chest and her face starts to glow. How long has he been feeling this way about her? She doesn't know what to say.
He slides closer to her and in a spark of bravery, or stupidity, Onyx presses his forehead to Kala's and meets his lips to hers. He is brave, for he is doing his best to show his hearts to her. He is also stupid, for he is making an impermissible advance on a lethal boombow warrior.
He steps back slightly, readying himself for anything she may say or do.
"What was that?" Dismay drapes over her alluring features.
Onyx answers her by doing it again. His lips are rough and awkward. Her lips tremble against his. To him, this small act of affection is odd, but if this is what she has been missing, if this is what she is going back to Earth for, he's more than willing to give it to her.
Kala pushes him away, her eyes burning. She doesn't know if she should be enraged or saddened. "Why did you kiss me?"
"Kiss." He repeats. "So that's what it's called. I remember seeing how close he was to you, how happy you seemed."
"With Michelangelo."
Onyx nods and wraps his large, four-fingered hands around her, denying her retreat. "I have wanted that closeness with you for a long time, Kala. If this is what you want... what you need, you do not have to travel to a different dimension to find it."
"Onyx..."
"Please." He interrupts. "We were only children when we first went to earth, teenagers. You have spent more time with me, with us, your fellow freedom fighters, than you have with your adolescent fling. The few times you went to Earth, I pitied you, wishing you would forget about that fantasy world and commit to your own reality."
"I am committed. I will not run away from my commitment, just as Mikey will not desert his city." Kala tries to change the subject. "You do not need to worry, Onyx. I will return."
"When?" He almost whines and affirms his grip on her.
Despite the serious tone of the conversation, Kala can't help but smile and indulge him. At times, Onyx and his brothers seem very childlike. It makes her wonder how young they were when they were taken and mutated. Unfortunately for Onyx, Kala sees him and the other otots like her younger brothers. And though Onyx is the most disciplined, hungry for knowledge and dependable, Kala finds him to be a bit clingy. She runs her hand over his head in a soothing manner. "Once I am rested and Donatello can procure me another portable portal, I will come back home."
"But... wait. I am trying to say that you don't need to go. Forget about Earth and forget about him... and stay with me."
Kala empathizes with her friend. Yes, he is not just a soldier or a pawn. She knows that he deserves happiness and believes that he will find it someday, just not with her. She sighs and removes herself from his arms. She glances up at the sky once more and says. "I can't. I don't want to stay. I want to go to Earth."
Onyx swears he hears a sharp crack as her refusal echoes through his shell. His empty hands ache and his head is spinning. "But... why, Kala?"
She goes back to him and they stand, face to face. "Onyx, I've already given my hands to another. And the length of time doesn't matter, not when I am with him. He has entangled himself to me and I'll never be unbound. You will understand this for yourself someday."
Onyx nods in resignation. Well, he tried, and he is glad he did. Tomorrow morning he will see Kala off with no regrets, and then go back to his Neutrino comrades and continue to help in getting their headquarters up and running. He gives her a genuine smile.
"Are we golden?" Kala asks him.
"Yes, we're golden." Onyx grins.
"Good. Now, I am hungry again. How about we order some room service and then turn in for the night?"
Onyx's face lights up. "Yes! I'll order." Onyx jogs over to the service pad on the wall and presses the button. "I wonder if they have anything like pizza on this planet."
Kala turns her head and smirks, taking one more look at the night sky before closing the curtains.
…
Leonardo knocks softly on the guestroom door. Moments later he hears grumbling and things falling to the floor. The door creaks open.
"Mona?" Leo whispers.
The lizard woman yawns and rubs her face with the over-sized t-shirt she's wearing. Her hair is a disastrous mess. "Leo…? What the F?"
"It's almost time. The portal's about to open."
Mona gasps. "Oh my gosh!" She runs back in her room, turns on a lamp and finds her brush. "I'll be right there! Oh my gosh!"
Leo shakes his head and smiles. He jogs back to the lab.
…
Kala had left without awaking Onyx. She knows he would have rather flown alongside her to the portal, but she was being selfish. She didn't want to say goodbye to her friend again.
With only minutes left to wait, Kala sits in the pilot seat of her black hotrod, checking her suit, making sure her di-oxygen pouch is in working order, breathing in through her nose and out of her mouth. She smiles, thinking how glad she is that Donatello had modified her pouch to feed air to her nose… it makes eating and talking… and kissing much easier.
She takes another deep breath and expels a big, nervous puff of air from her mouth. She checks her radio signal once more to make sure it's on the right frequency.
One minute left. She shuts down her jet and turns on its invisible shield. It's programmed it to stay where it is, shooting spurts of cool energy to stay in orbit around the blue star. It will send a signal back to Onyx's ship, so he can tow it back to the secret base. She checks her tether that ensures she stays connected to her ship while out in space. She opens the hatch.
All vitals are good. Any moment now, if Donnie was as successful as Kala believes he was, an impressively impossible event is about to take place. She holds on to the wing of her ship, which is a bit unnerving since she can't see it while it's in cloak-mode. She looks about in every direction for the rift. She'll only have a few minutes to pass through. The sound of her breathing is her only comfort.
And then static from her radio scratches to life as a thin line of light shines before her from a distance.
…
With Donatello at the controls, Leonardo, Raphael, Mona, April and Michelangelo are spellbound, watching as the far wall of his lab opens up, revealing the vastness of Dimension X.
"Awesome." Raph mutters.
"It's so beautiful." April sighs.
"You know… you are like a scary genius, Donnie." Mona awes.
"I can't believe it. You created a standalone portal to a different universe… um… should we be worried that space is just through that hole?" Leo asks.
Donatello checks the stability reading once more. "Not at all, Leo. One may think the portal connects our two dimensions, but in actuality, it slips into an almost infinity small space between them. Our two atmospheres can't interact with each other. This is why it's possible to look through and not worry about the cold, vacuum of space sucking out all of our air."
"Good to know." Leo says.
Michelangelo steps closer as the portal solidifies. He looks down and around. "I see her! I see Kala!"
Leo and Raph step up beside him.
"Yes!" Leo points. "She's about twenty feet down and a hundred feet away."
"How will she get up here?" Raph wonders.
The radio crackles to life and a scratchy voice comes through. "He… Hear… Hello… can… me?"
Donatello adjusts the feed. "Kala! I can hear you. Can you see us?"
"Yes! Yes I can!" She says. She looks up and sees three, dark figures standing in the portal. One of them must be him. She waves. "Hello, Mikey!"
He waves back happily. "Hello, babe! I'm so glad you made it!"
"Guys the clock is ticking. She has 4 minutes, and 33 seconds to get through." Donnie says.
"What do ya want us to do?" Raph asks.
"Just stand around the portal. Once she comes through she my fly out or fall straight to the ground. Be ready to catch her… We're ready when you are Kala." Donnie speaks through the microphone to her.
Kala nods and checks her tether one more time. She bends her knees, angles herself towards the trajectory point and pushes off her ship.
"Here she comes!" Mikey shouts.
Kala flies towards the portal at a good and steady speed. Her tether is approximately 110 feet. She'll have enough slack to make it up and in to earth.
110…110…, she thinks. "Oh, no." She whispers.
Everyone hears Kala's worry over the speakers. Mikey's fearful face looks at Donnie.
"What's wrong, Kala?" Donnie asks her quickly.
"I, I do not think my tether is long enough."
"It's OK, Kala!" Mikey yells loud enough for her to hear him through the radio. "You're almost there! I'll catch you once you come through." Mikey stands in front of the portal, fighting the urge not to reach out there and grab her.
"Thirty more feet!" Donnie announces.
Everyone is silently watching Kala come closer, listening to her steady breathing through the radio.
Michelangelo gets low, ready to catch her at any moment. Leo and Raph are beside and behind him.
"Come on." He whispers to himself. "Just a few feet more."
Kala stretches out her arms. Her mouth is open and her eyes are wide. She's close enough to see his bright, blue eyes…
"Ahh!"
"Kala!"
Michelangelo watches in terror as Kala abruptly stops and flips up and over. She had been right. Her tether was too short.
"Kala!" Mikey screams again. He reaches though the portal but his brothers yank him back by his shell.
"Damn it, are you crazy?" Raph says.
Michelangelo hisses at the pain from his hand being exposed to the below zero cold of space. He looks back into the portal and can no longer see her. "Kala! Are you ok?"
"Kala, do you read me?" Donnie speaks into the mic.
Her breathing is louder and her voice is a bit shaky. "Yes, I am fine." Kala calms herself and pulls on her tether, guiding herself back to her hotrod. "I'll just… have to try again… without tether."
Mikey gasps and runs out of the lab. Mona watches him dash past and April follows him.
"Kala, I advise against you doing that. It's irreparably dangerous, and there's only 3 minute and 16 seconds left."
"More than… enough time. I can make it."
Donnie stares at the portal and then back at his controls. He can't have her risk her life to get here. It's best to try again in another ten or twenty days… if he can do it again. He has to stop her. "Kala, I'm sorry. It's too much of a risk.
"I have to come back."
"We don't want you to die."
"I've made it back to my ship."
"If you unclasp your tether, I'm closing the portal!" Donnie warns.
"Don't do it, Donnie!" Michelangelo runs back in, wearing a dirty spacesuit that he's a bit too short for.
April runs in after him. "He won't listen to me!"
Mikey walks up to the portal with the helmet under one arm.
Donatello can see where the suit had been 'fixed' with multiple layers of duct tape. "What are you, where did find that?"
"Here in you lab. I'm going in after her."
"Are you crazy! That thing is years old, I've only used it once!"
"It's fine, I tested it in the pool!"
"The pool is not OUTTERSPACE, MIKEY!"
"Donnie, there's not much time! I'm GOING!" Mikey secures his helmet and the green light on his wrist lights up, confirming a good seal. He hands the end of his tether to Leo and Raph. He looks them square in the eye. "DO NOT pull me in without her." He smiles. "And don't hold it too tight. It's also my breathing tube!"
"What!" They all scream.
Michelangelo turns and jumps through the portal.
…
Kala is too stunned to intrude on the frantic words shared between Donatello and Michelangelo, the genius and his reckless brother. And just as quickly, it's all over and she sees a figure dive through the portal. "Mikey…" she breathes.
"Kala?" Donnie says through the radio. "If you're going to do this, do it now. You have two minutes, 13 seconds." Donnie presses buttons and turns knobs. "Mikey, can you hear me?" Donnie says though a small speaker in his suit.
"Yea… this feels so weird."
"I'm connecting you into her frequency."
Two seconds later.
"Mikey." Kala says.
"Kala! Kala, I'm right here with you." He spreads his arms out wide.
"Mikey! Why did you…?"
"I'm not going back without you… ready?"
"I am ready." Without another word, she unhooks her belt from the lifeline securing her to her ship. But, because her ship is moving along in orbit, it's a bit father from the portal than before. She keeps her eyes on him, the one floating far above her, the one that came for her.
One breath.
Two breaths.
She jumps.
From the other side of the portal, Leo, Raph, April and Mona stand breathless as they see Kala jettison herself from everything keeping her safe.
"Shit…" Raph mumbles. "This is so cool and so scary at the same time."
"Two minutes…" Donatello says.
Mona holds onto Raph's tense arms. "What'll happen if the portal closes?" She whispers to him.
"They'll be stranded out there." Leo says.
"No, Kala will be stranded out there." Donnie corrects him. "You and Raph are holding onto Mikey's air supply. If that portal collapses with Mikey on the other side, it's going to cut right through that air tube."
April places her hands over her mouth, not knowing what to do or say.
Leonardo looks down at his hands and then out at his baby brother. He doesn't want to loose either Mikey or Kala… But one loss is better than two. He closes his eyes and shakes his head. "Tell us when we have thirty seconds left, Donnie… Raph, we're not letting him die out there."
Raphael nods in understanding. He gulps and stares briefly at April and Mona, and then back into the portal.
Kala flies along, halfway between her ship and Michelangelo. She tries to keep herself focused on her turtle's form, but she risks looking 'down'… what a horrible idea. Absolute nothingness. Her breathing quickens and she fights to bring her eyes back upon him. She begins to feel panic brewing in her stomach. She had heard what Donatello said. He had mistakenly only muted Mikey's helmet and not her own. If Michelangelo happens to get stuck out here with her after the portal closes…
He'd die instantly, right in front of her eyes. The minuscule amount of air in his suit would be sucked out so violently, his lungs would cave in and his blood would boil and he'd expire before he could register the pain.
She'd collide into him. Once a living, breathing angel, would then become a still and frozen corpse. She decides within herself that she wouldn't leave him; she wouldn't let go. Her hearts would turn away from her people's freedom and succumb to this silent prison. She'd stay adrift with him in the darkness of the void. She'd tumble with him and give into her mourning freely until her own air runs out.
"Kala! Can you hear me! You're almost there!' Michelangelo calls her out of her waking nightmare.
"One minute!" Donatello shouts.
Kala blinks her eyes and nods. "Yes, Mikey!"
"Forty-five seconds!"
"Come on, Mikey!" Mona shouts and she digs her nails into Raph's arm.
"Almost there!" Mikey says.
Donnie looks over at his brothers holding the line, and April standing behind them. He sees tears brimming her eyes. "Thirty-four…thirty-three…" He says.
April looks over at him, pleading to him a silent prayer.
"Thirty seconds…" He mumbles.
"Don't pull him in!" April cries. "Does he have her?"
Leo and Raph stall a moment at her fretful voice. They look to Donnie.
Donnie speaks into the mic. "Mikey, do you have her… Mikey!"
"I got her!" They hear him say over the speaker.
"Pull! Pull!" Raphael roars.
Leonardo, Raphael, Mona, and April tug on the air tube with all their might. Donatello makes his way at the end of the line and pulls as well.
The portal shakes and sputters at its edges. It's happening.
"Donnie?" Leo asks warily.
"Just keep pulling! Still ten seconds left!"
The more they pull the farther away Mikey seems and the air tube is ice cold, but no one dares to loose their grip on it. Then the portal wavers and starts to fade.
"Mikey!" Leo shouts.
With two seconds to spare, Michelangelo and Kala shoot up and out of the portal, making everyone in the lab duck for cover. There's a loud crash. Donatello looks up just in time to see the portal flicker out and close, his normal back wall of the lab reappearing.
Everyone gets up and stands over the brave, little turtle who is holding tightly to the Neutrino astronaut he plucked out of the sky. They sit up. He removes her helmet; she is blinking back tears. He removes his helmet, quickly tossing it aside. Without pause, he again wraps his arms around her and presses his lips to hers. This touch is what he has been waiting far too long for. He sighs and the tension in his shoulders melts away. He falls into her, so overcome with the actual presence of her. She wraps her arms around him and welcomes him. Her skin stars to glow with delight. Finally, she is with her Michelangelo.
Leonardo relaxes into a smile. He is so happy for his brother and Kala. Mikey has given his life, yet again, for this woman. He hopes nothing but good things for them. Suddenly, melancholy takes the place of the happiness he had. Leonardo quietly slips away.
Mona is practically in tears over the whole thing. She's excited, ecstatic, and nauseous. She doesn't know which emotion to act on first. So she just cries. "This is so beautiful. Can you believe this just happened? I can't… I, it's amazing. I'm so happy for them." She wipes her eyes on the cuff of her shirt.
Raphael smiles softly at Mikey and Kala. He has a newfound respect for him, had no idea Mikey had the balls to jump into space for the girl he loves. He hears Mona whimpering beside him. He rolls his eyes and puts an arm around her. "C'mon. No more waterworks. Let's leave these two alone." Raph leads Mona out of the lab.
Donatello shuts down his computer. He closes his stinging eyes and exhales as the system makes a satisfying whirr to silence. April comes up beside him and wraps her arms about him. She hides her face against his shoulder.
He hugs her back and when he pulls her away is surprised to see how flushed her face is. He caresses her cheek. "Are you OK?"
She nods. "Yeah, it's just…" She looks over his shoulder to where Mikey and Kala are still in their warm embrace on the floor. "It's just that he could have died but… still, I'm so glad you let him go."
"I had to. I'm sure my brothers and I were thinking the same thing… what if it was Mona out there, or you? Raph would have jumped out there and never looked back. I'd have stayed out there until I had you. And once I had you, I know my family would bring us back."
April hugs him tightly, not realizing how much more he's crept into her heart. "You did all of this for your brother. You're amazing, Donatello."
"Donnie?"
April and Donatello turn and see Kala standing there, holding Mikey's hand.
"Welcome back, Kala." Donnie grins.
"I just wanted to say… thank you!" Kala rushes up to the brainy turtle and presses her forehead to his. With her eyes still full of tears, and her hand firmly laced with Mikey's she speaks softly. "Thank you, for bringing him back to me."
"Anything for love." Donnie says and glances at April.
…
…
Floating at the edge of death had never made Michelangelo feel so alive. That rush of excitement and reckless abandon had made him into a believer of leaving nothing for regret. He'd been patient and long suffering in the past, delighting in innocent acts of affection, and privately satisfying his carnal urges.
But this early Wednesday morning would be the end of all that. This is a new beginning; one that he hopes will be a frequent occurrence. He isn't afraid or fearful of the possible 'mechanical issues' that may come up. All he is sure of is that what he and Kala are feeling is the same thing. They are wanting the same thing, and willing to give into that feeling with each other.
There is only a brief look they share once they awaken in the warmth of his bed. Earlier in the wee hours of the morning, right after the portal had closed, everyone had gone straight to bed. Michelangelo and Kala discarded their space-wear and passed out in each other's arms quite soundly.
But now that they're rested and happily secure in the safeness of their touches, he can't help but run his hands along the length of her arms and she is all but lost in pressing her lips to his. He rolls back on his shell and she wraps her legs around him, not wanting to risk breaking the searing kiss they've stoked.
He runs his fingers over the thin cloth covering her waist, making his way to her hips, tracing his thumbs along her lower belly, feeling how warm and wet it is. Kala fights not to suck in air through her mouth at the sudden sensation ebbing through her.
As she sits on top on him, she stills his hands. She removes her shirt, revealing her warm, golden skin, her modestly sized, but pleasant pair of breasts, and an old battle scar lining her left hip. He is in awe. On top of him sits, a proud and gorgeous being looking down on him like a cosmic angel. She smiles at him, her sliver eyes raking over the tight, smooth tendons of his mighty arms, the way his once bright eyes now envelope her in a deep indigo.
He reaches up and cups her bosom making her sigh. The feel of his hands upon her makes her squirm. She grasps the rim of his shell and pulls him on top of her. He kisses her lips, lingers at her neck for a moment and trails down and around each responding nipple.
As he takes his time inching closer to his destination, a lovely scent invades him. It reminds him of the little yellow, wild flowers that grew on top of one of the buildings in upper Manhattan. It was strange to find a small cluster of them surviving the cold and the smog. He remembers picking one, sniffing at it, biting it. It was light and sweet, just as Kala is now. She smells like honeysuckle.
He sees her pelvis is glistening with arousal. This is Kala in all her glory. More intrigued than nervous, Michelangelo tepidly traces the soft, silky ridges that meander across where a human female's most private area would be. Her breath hitches and her skin glows. Her scent is strong and he kisses and licks her ever swelling ridges.
Her taste is intoxicating. Oh my Shell! Can I get some toast with this butter? Mikey thinks as he continues to work her steadily, adding his saliva to her gleaming juices.
"Mikey." She moans.
Heck, if she likes it, he won't stop. He'll keep doing it until something happens. What will happen? He has no idea, and he'll do anything to find out.
"Keep going… please!" She begs. Kala is panting, trying desperately to remember to breathe from her nose's dioxygen supply and out of her mouth. Soon she loops in a sensual rhythm of short inhales and long melodic exhales. She's glowing with the warmth and vigor of a setting sun and Michelangelo is loving every moment of it.
As he 'keeps going' he notices her pulsing and squirming and rubbing her thighs together. Upon further inspection, Michelangelo discovers that those silky ridges that run across her center also line a few inches down her inner thighs. So he continues to lick and adds to her pleasure by fitting his finger firmly between her thighs and gliding it back and forth until…
Kala opens her eyes wide, and shouts to the heavens in the tongues of her people, her hands splay over his head, as her ridges throb against his finger and lips, catapulted by the surge of euphoria engulfing her.
Mikey's eyes don't waver once. He watches the reds and oranges and yellows of her skin blink along time with her cries. He groans as well as he fully reveals himself.
Her arched back falls to the bed and she sighs a happy sound. Michelangelo straddles her; leans down to her and kisses her long and slow until her breathing calms. He looks into her eyes and laces his hands with hers and wantonly presses himself against her ridges. To his pleasant surprise her supple warmth yields and folds around him. It is a feeling of pure completion, total connection. With her hands pinned with his beside her head, and her forehead pressed against his, he whispers these words into her mouth. "I love you, Kala."
"I love you, Michelangelo." Kala murmurs back.
Two different beings from two different worlds revel in this close and intimate moment, clinging to each other, living hearts beating, to a song only they can hear, happy and alone in a small bedroom, in an underground sanctuary, hidden from the city that doesn't know their heroes, on a little blue planet, that continues its spinning, welcoming the sun, announcing a new day.
