Chapter nine
Fang and I mounted the fire dragon, ready for battle. I kinda felt bad for Maya: the guy she's desperately trying to hang on to is still in love with her twin. Not… that I want him back. Psh, of course not!
Anyway, Angel and Iggy joined my right side on the spirit dragon; Maya and Nudge on my left on the water dragon. The other 21 Angels and Demons got quiet as the six of us raised our arms towards the entrance of the boss lair.
"Fire, open the corridor!" Fang and I said.
"Spirit, open the corridor!" Angel and Iggy said.
"Water, open the corridor!" Maya and Nudge finished. Three big keys appeared in front of the huge door.
I nodded to the group of three directly behind me. The female fire, water, and spirit users flew up to the keys and unlocked the doors.
"Prepare yourselves!" I advised over my shoulder as the doors began to open. Various types of weapons were summoned. "Healers, hang back! Split up and be ready to help when needed! Everybody else, let's move! Keep a sharp eye out for this boss!"
As soon as the wide doors opened fully, I led the group inside. I felt the power in the dragon strengthen my own; at that moment, I knew I could trust it. I heard the doors close behind the last of the group and a red light flashed.
"Max, look out!" Angel said right before slamming her dragon into mine. I watched as a water blast hit directly where I had been perched. That would've probably taken me, Fang, and the dragon out instantly, judging by the hole the blast had left.
"A lion, hydra, and panther mix!" JJ pointed out. I urged the dragon into the air as the boss dived at me.
"Hey, why only us?!" I exclaimed as it came after only my dragon!
"It's designed to take apart a team, starting with the strongest," explained Fang. I maneuvered the dragon out of clawing reach. 'That is so not fair,' I thought.
"Stick to the plan! Don't bother trying to protect Fang and me! We can take care of ourselves!" Both of us pulled out our swords.
"What's the new plan, Max?" Fang muttered in my ear. I avoided a hydra head.
"I'm flying. Cover me."
I spread my wings and flew off of the dragon. As soon as I did, I had to swerve in order to avoid a panther claw. I spun around multiple times in order to slice the nails off (those things are huge and thick!). The monstrosity roared. Fang had the dragon fry off two hydra heads. Four grew back.
"Shit, that wasn't supposed to happen," he muttered. I stabbed the lion's hand swinging at me. Nudge and Angel started to fly closer to me (they had abandoned their dragons as well and chose to fly with their wings) but I waved them off.
"Fire, strike its heart!" Fire shot out of my free hand and hit the beast's chest as I yanked my sword out. I swooped down and knocked three members out of harm's way.
"Max!" Ella shrieked as a claw pinned me down. I struggled to get free as the other Angels and Demons sliced at the boss in an attempt to free me.
"This is getting ridiculous! Fire, free me!" The entire arm fried off as I shot out from under the beast.
"You should be more focused on saving yourself," Maya said as the water dragon sent a blast at the boss.
"You should be further up. Now fly," I growled. She obeyed.
I joined the other fire users on the ground in frying off heads. To protect them, I shot into the air as the beast whipped around to face us. My wings started cramping up, and I panicked. Cramped wings mean dwindling power.
"Fang, I…." I cried out as claws sliced across my back. I fell out of the air and slammed against the ground.
Cliffy! Deal with it.
