Chapter 10
"I've made my decision." Mitchie stated. Shane eyes flashed up to Mitchie's, for they had been glued to the floor a few minutes before. "I'm going to have it. And, I have a healthy body, so… I'll fight to stay alive…" Mitchie said confidently, but Shane knew that there was glimpse of nervous tension in her eyes.
"You sure babe?" Shane asked quietly. She took a deep breath and held it in. Mitchie nodded. Shane pulled her into a hug. She cried silently into his shoulder, and Shane realized he had a few tears dropping from his eyes. Then they looked into each others eyes. Shane stroked her hair and said something.
"Just don't leave me okay…?" he said helplessly. He was about to start bawling, but the natural boy thing was holding him back.
They both lay in the hospital bed and fell asleep after what seemed like hours.
"Michelle Torres, you can leave today. But if you want a good chance of surviving the birth, I advise you to be as healthy as possible." The nurse said when everyone was awake. Mitchie hated being called Michelle, and she hated hospitals, so she was in a bad mood. "Thank you." She said irritably. Shane helped pack up Mitchie's belongings while everyone else went out to wait in the bus.
Shane had already told Jason, Nate, and Caitlyn about Mitchie's decision.
A few days later, they were on the road again. And everyone was being careful with Mitchie. Nobody really knew what to say to her, so most of the time, they didn't talk at all. And Mitchie got fed up with it.
"Listen! We don't have to be any different than we were before! I know you're all thinking that I'm going to die! I'm not! So just talk to me! I'm not dead! You're all treating me like I'm already gone!"
Tears came to Caitlyn's eyes as soon as the words left Mitchie's mouth. She saw Caitlyn, and would've felt bad on a normal occasion, but this was different. Mitchie loved Caitlyn, but Caitlyn was treating her like she barely knew her. How could she. She's my best friend! Mitchie thought.
Mitchie looked at every one in disgust. She never felt so alone. Shane was the only one who was a little normal around her. He always talked to her normally, but he always treated her like something that was just about to break in half. Even when he kissed her, he never made-out with her fiercely like he used to. Now he was always so gentle.
Nate and Jason are her two best guy friends, and now they didn't even talk to her.
"I'm not dead!" Mitchie screamed, bawling her eyes out at the same time. She couldn't take it anymore… she had to get away from everyone here. Mitchie bolted into the backroom with all the beds in it. She flung herself down on the bed and closed the curtain.
Mitchie closed her eyes, still crying. She never would've thought this would happen… Then someone came in and closed the door behind them. "Go away!" she cried.
Shane opened her curtain and laid next to her. Then he put the curtain back and hugged her lying down. There was no point in pushing him away. Mitchie clung to his shirt and cried into his chest.
"I'm so sorry Mitchie… I'm just…. So sorry…" Shane whispered, but not in his usual tone. He seemed… helpless. So desperate for what he wanted… Mitchie could not believe this. Shane was breaking down inside.
For the first time ever, Shane turned away from Mitchie. He couldn't let her see him cry. He tried to hold in his tears, but it was no use. He couldn't lose her… he just couldn't… if she died, so would he.
Now they were both crying. Mitchie pulled him towards her, so she could see his face. He didn't fight back, but he let her turn him around. She put her hand on his cheek. They both leaned in at the exact same time.
Their lips met softly to each other's. Neither of them wanted to pull away, so they didn't. They slowly made-out for a while before someone opened the door.
Mitchie and Shane stopped kissing, but kept their lips less than a centimeter away. Shane had held her waist to comfort her.
Caitlyn's voice came out from behind the curtain. "Mitchie… I'm so so sorry… I don't deserve a friend like you… I'm such a jerk… I'm so so sorry…" Caitlyn was crying harder than ever while she said those words. She apparently climbed to the top bunk and got under her covers.
Mitchie did forgive her. She just didn't want to talk right now. She just wanted to be with Shane right now. He always calmed her down.
He ran his hand over her stomach. Then his eyes opened. Shane kept his hand in the center of her stomach. Mitchie didn't know what he was doing, so she looked at his hand.
"I can't believe I didn't notice that…" she whispered so Caitlyn wouldn't hear. There was a fairly large bump. "I'm already getting fat…" she said a little too loud. Shane kissed her forehead and laughed.
They both eventually fell asleep.
Mitchie woke up with her back against the wall. Shane was still lying next to her, still asleep. This bed was not big enough for two people. So she laid there, wide awake, trying to remember what happened yesterday.
Behind the curtain, Mitchie could hear Nate and Jason snoring loudly. She looked at Shane. He looked so… depressed, even though he was sleeping. He was peacefully sleeping, but something about the expression he had… was just depressing. Mitchie couldn't take to see that anymore.
She slightly shook his shoulder. Unusually, he woke right up. He franticly said, "Are you okay?" There was something wrong with him.
Mitchie looked at him funny, and asked him, "Shane, are you okay?" He was sweating, and as far as Mitchie could tell, he was breathing deeply.
"Shane! What's wrong?" Mitchie asked quietly, but more worried than ever before. He didn't answer, but pulled the curtain back, and ran into the main room.
Mitchie laid there for a minute, worrying about what was wrong with him. But then she sprung out of bed and ran after him.
She found him sitting on the couch, with his face in his hands. She stayed at the door, but asked him what was wrong for the third time. It took him several minutes, but he responded, "Nothing…" Shane was lying to her.
"Shane, tell me what's wrong." She demanded.
Then, he automatically blurted it out. "Let's get married now."
Mitchie was taken aback. "Well yeah we're going to get married… but first tell me what's wrong."
"Mitchie! I'll tell you when the time is right; but right now we need to get married!" he responded a little angrily. At this point, Mitchie was completely confused. He had just yelled at her, and something was wrong. Something was really wrong. She would've made him tell her what was wrong, but she saw his facial expression.
She just stared at him for a few minutes, trying to figure it out. She had no idea what would make him act this way. But he wasn't waist any time. He wanted to get married now.
"Where are we gonna go to get married now?" she asked, still trying to get the truth out of him.
"I'll take you there… just… don't leave me okay?"
Then a thought came to her. Either he wanted to spend as much time with her as possible before the baby came, or she was in danger.
