Nemeia, Wild Abyssal Sorcerer
Our newest party member joined us while we were uncovering and collecting relics from ancient tombs. After dealing with jackals, mummified cats, spectral guards, death traps, giant scorpions, we came across an otherworldly beast devoid of a face. So with a Cyborg Archer (Starfinder+Overwatch monk path via Dawnforge), Aasimar Paladin (Overwatch crusader oath), a dragon avatar (based on the lost dragon wiki and dragonborn from 5e) and Abyssal Tiefling Wild Sorcerer things were going our way... until the fight began.
Immediately the creature slams the archer to the ground and proceeds to pummel him dropping the monk's hp to nearly zero. The Paladin rushes forward with his mighty war hammer only to critically fail so he trips and sends his massive weapon in the opposite direction. So it comes to the Tiefling's turn.
Now we have all joked about some of the effects that could happen if this character's magic went wild. At fifteen percent it seems unlikely it would happen so she, Nemeia, rolled for her Chaos Bolt and got a Natural 1 we were anxious and nervous as to what could happen. Would she lose all her experience, would she become age to the point of collapsing into dust, release a tarrasque? We didn't know.
So as our DM flips through her book and starts rolling on the ground it made the rest of us raise an eyebrow in question. The DM clears her throat and announces, "as you feel the essence of arcane power flow through you, you sense something with the power you attempted to call on. Instead of your typical chaotic energies you feel nature's wrath coursing through you veins and transforming you into vicious and terrifying fichus plant."
The rest of us, monster included, share a moment of 'wait, what?' as the once powerful tiefling sorceress was turned into a bloody plant. As her bonus reaction she shook with rage like the plants in Goth kids episode 3 from South Park. Instantly shattering any moment of dramatic/dire atmosphere. The effect only lasted a while but for a brief moment everyone lost their collective minds laughing.
This is why we play D&D, for events such as this.
