"Doc, you're going to need to prepare yourself for this."
"Just tell me." Maura's voice was cold, and distant, she was trying to see what her team was doing with the body.
"Jane…"
"No… no…no, no no no no no!" Maura let her head fall and the tears began to flow freely.
"It's not her, but she is going to need your support. We didn't want to bring her to the scene; she'll be at the station when you get back."
"You, could have lead with that!" Maura said, once she finally regained her composure. "So, why does she need my support?"
"It's Casey. He was meant to fly out to Afghanistan today; he was staying at a hotel overnight."
Maura nodded, she knew that Jane wouldn't be as fussed as everyone thought she would be, after all it would mean that she wouldn't be abused anymore. She certainly knew that she would sleep better knowing that Jane was safe for now. "I'll do the preliminary exam and then transport the body back to the morgue." Maura stood and went to examine the body; she put on a mask, cold, queen of the dead. This case was personal, although the bastard hurt Jane, he was a soldier and in the eyes of the media. A soldier dying on home ground would cause a lot of outrage. There would certainly be pressure to catch the guy.
Finally she authorized the removal of the body and hopped into her car. She stopped at her house on the way back and dropped of the suitcases of Jane's things that she had packed that morning. She headed into the precinct and down to her office.
"Maura!" Jane exclaimed as she rose from the couch in Maura's office. "What's going on? Why will no one tell me anything?" Jane asked, slightly hysterically.
"Sit. Please." Maura took a seat on the couch next to Jane and took her hand in her own before continuing. "Jane, it's Casey. He was in a car crash; I believe he died upon impact."
"Okay… Are you doing the autopsy?"
"I wanted to ask you if you were comfortable with that, I can always call in doctor Pike."
"No. I want you to do it, you're a professional, it's okay Maura I want you to do it."
"Jane, I know he hurt you, but deep down a part of you loved him, you wouldn't have married him if you didn't. If you need time to grieve, that's okay. Everyone expects you to go home anyway."
"Do you mind if I just stay here? On your uncomfortable couch that I probably won't be great to get any sleep on."
"Of course you can stay here Jane. I do have to continue my work though; however I'd be happy to go to lunch with you. I'll also see if I can go home early as well."
"Thank you Maur."
"Anytime." The doctor turned and put on her scrubs so that she could perform the autopsy.
Maura wandered into the morgue and picked her recorder up off the table.
"Doctor Maura Isles, initiating the exam of lieutenant colonel Charles Jones." Maura began by removing the shoes and socks. She placed them onto a tray and then handed the tray to her assistant to take to the lab.
She began cutting the ribs to access the internal organs when Detective Korsak walked in. Maura placed the rib cutters down and pulled off her gloves.
"Doc, do you have a cause of death yet?" He said as he carefully closed the morgue door behind him.
"No, not yet, although from my external examination it appears that he died from the impact of the car crash. The internal injuries will confirm or deny that."
"Is Jane doing okay?"
"Yes, fine. Did you need to speak to her?"
"No. Carry on." Korsak walked away, swung open the door and headed back upstairs.
He went and sat at his desk whilst looking at traffic camera footage, from around the airport. Nothing. He couldn't spot a damn thing. Jane was going to be pissed if her couldn't catch whoever killed her husband.
"Detective Korsak?" Korsak turned around and saw an officer standing at the door "There's someone here who wants to see you. I sent her into the waiting room." Korsak stood.
"Thank you officer Smith." Korsak said before heading to the waiting room. "I'm detective Korsak, you wanted to see me?"
"Yes, I saw on the news about that soldier." Korsak took a seat next to the woman.
"Do you have some information?"
"I was dropping my son off at the airport and I was driving back and the car behind me was blasting loud music and swerving. I think the driver was drunk, I didn't think anything of it, especially since the roads were clear, but when I heard about that soldier I had to say something."
"Do you know what type of car they were driving?"
"I think it was silver, a large car, maybe a small SUV."
"Thank you very much, if you remember anything else don't hesitate to contact me." He hands her his card with his details on before standing up.
"I hope you catch this guy, nothing worse than a soldier dying on home soil. Goodbye Detective Korsak."
They both leave the room and Korsak heads back to his desk.
Jane woke up from her nap on Maura's couch to find the doctor doing paperwork at her desk. "I'm starving Maura, what time is it?"
"Seven fifty six."
"Do you have anything to eat?"
"Yes I have a salad left over from my lunch."
"No, Maur I want real food, not rabbit food."
"Okay Jane, let me finish this file and then we can go and get some dinner. Jane, Korsak arrested the man who killed Casey."
"W-Who was it?"
"17 year old drunk driver. He's not going to get very long in jail since he has no priors."
"It's okay."
"I know you think it's alright. The media aren't going be pleased. He was still a soldier, who was killed on home soil."
"Let them deal with it. Can I ask you something?"
"Can it wait? I've nearly finished this report."
"Yeah, yeah sure." Jane sighs.
A comfortable silence passes whilst Maura finished her report. "Okay, done." Maura states as she puts her pen back into the pen pot. "Let's go and eat. Do you want to go to the dirty robber? We could go to back to my house if you're more comfortable with that?"
"Do you mind if we go to yours? I'm still really tired, that's if you don't mind if I stay over again."
"Of course not Jane, you're my best friend, you know that."
"Maur…where did you go this morning? You scared me."
"I-I went to your apartment and I packed up all your stuff, it's in the back of my car. I just didn't want you staying there, I can put you up in a hotel, or you can stay here. I just didn't want you to be there."
"Thank you so much Maura. I can stay at a hotel , I don't want to be a bother."
"Jane, you are not a bother at all. Stay as long as you want."
"Okay, I'll start looking for a new place tomorrow, you're right; I don't want to live there, too many memories."
"Come on; let's go unload some of your clothes." They both stand and make their way to Maura's car.
