AN: Hello! Sorry for the extreme delay in posting. When I started writing this I was unemployed and had a lot of free time on my hands, this is not the case anymore. Plus I totally underestimated the time it would take me to write a chapter. So my apologies. I'm all too familiar with the feeling of frustration and disappointment when you're reading a fic and it hasn't been updated forever and a day. I wish I could be that awesome author that bangs out chapter after chapter of their story, but I'm not that awesome. From the bottom of my heart I thank every person that has read and reviewed this story. It really makes my day.
So if there is anybody left reading this, we left off with Jane kinda of contemplating her friendship with Maura and Maura's insecurities about their friendship are starting to surface.
This is not beta'd. All mistakes are mine.
Jane startled awake by her alarm blaring in the background. Breathing heavy, she was pulled from a very salacious dream that involved a certain Medical Examiner. She internally scolded herself for dreaming about her best friend in such a manner, but her thoughts were quickly redirected to the persistent throbbing between her legs. Jane was well aware that her body was begging for a release, but she was torn between giving in to her body's need for relief and the inevitable shame she would feel about getting off to elicit thoughts of her best friend. As the battle between body and mind raged on, Jane mindlessly started to caress her stomach just above her belly button. Her breath quicken as a warm flush spread throughout her body. Her resolve was weakening as her fingers slipped dangerously close to the waistband of her underwear while images from her dream flashed in her mind spurring her on. Jane was on the precipice of giving into her desires when she withdrew her hand from her stomach. This was a line she didn't want to cross. Having sex dreams about her best friend is something she couldn't control, but to actively seek out a release to said dreams is something she could control. Giving into her desire would bring forth a lot of questions that she wasn't ready to ask let alone answer. Instead, she opted for a cold shower to start her day.
Work was tediously slow and a frustrated Jane sat at her desk glaring at the piles of paperwork strewn across her desk. Frost appeared in the doorway with two cups of coffee.
"Here you go partner. You look like you need a pick me up." Frost smiled as he placed the coffee on Jane's desk.
"Thanks, but if I have anymore coffee I think I might jump out of my skin and skeleton will start to climb up the walls." Jane crumpled up a piece of paper and chucked into the wastepaper basket next to her desk, and leaned back into her chair with a huff.
"Oh before I forget, you and Dr. Isles are invited to my Mom and Robin's wedding. Can you pass it on to the Doc for me." Frost said with a big bright smile.
"Sure, I will do so as soon as I see Maura. When is the wedding and where is it being held?"
Jane pulled out her phone to put Camille and Robin's wedding in her calendar.
"They are still trying to lock down the venue they want, so the date is TBA. They are shooting for sometime within the first two week of September. They want a to get married when the leaves start to change." Frost started to thumb through the stack of files on his desk.
"It should be lovely. Please tell Robin and Camille that I'm honored to be invited to their wedding." Jane said with a sweet smile.
Frost gave a slight nod.
They sat at their desks in silence for the better part of 20 minutes. Jane was restless in her seat and constantly kept shifting around. Frost looked up at Jane to see a perplexed look upon her face.
"Whatcha thinking about?"
"Nothing really." Jane replied.
"Really? You look like you're trying to figure out life's deepest secrets." Frost gestured to Jane's agitated form.
"Well… I was just thinking about your Ma and how you knew that she and Robin were a couple before she told you." Jane shifted in her seat. "UM… How did you know?"
Frost leaned back in his chair and ran his fingers across his chin, stroking his beard.
"Hmm… I guess it was a bunch of little things, and when they added all up it just kind of made sense." Frost shrugged.
"What things exactly?" Jane's curiosity increased due to a personal interests that she wished she could ignore.
Frost thought for a second before he answered.
"I noticed a change in my mom after she divorced my father. At first it was a slight change in her demeanor, she seemed a little more relaxed than the mother that I grew up with. I just assumed that was attributed to getting a divorce from my father. My father wasn't an easy man to live with, he had very strict demands on how our household was run, and how I was supposed to be raised. My mother kept our house in pristine condition all the while being the ideal military wife."
Frost paused for a slight moment.
"Over the years I could tell the pressure of it all was getting to her because the sparkle in her eyes started to fade, and she didn't smile as often as she did when I was little, so when she decided to divorce my father, I was supportive because I wanted my mom to have the chance to be happy again."
Frost took a sip from his coffee.
"When Robin moved in, my mother seemed happier than she had for years. She smiled more, her eyes had that little twinkle in them, but the most noticeable change was the way she moved. It was like she was more comfortable in her own body, and felt free enough to stand tall and make her presence known." Frost sat up straight in his chair and squared his shoulder to mimic his mother's posture. "My father made her feel so small and insignificant that she shrunk herself down as not to be in the way. I will never forgive him for making her feel like that."
Frost's expression soured at the memory as he relaxed into his chair.
Noticing the change in Frost's demeanor, Jane reached across her desk to place her hand over Frost's hand in a comforting manner.
"It's ok, My father is a bit of an asshole as well." Frost smiled at Jane's words.
"So… is that's how you knew?" Jane tried to redirect the conversation back on topic. "I mean it seemed like Robin was the source of Camille's happiness." Jane said as she withdrew her hand.
"Well yes and no." Frost shifted in his seat. "There was no doubt that my mother was a happier person since she met Robin, but I just assumed that was due to the fact that they were best friends. They didn't act like they were anything other than close friends when I was around, so I didn't really think much about it. Until this one day when I was up for a visit. I was sitting in the living room and my Mother and Robin were in the kitchen preparing dinner. Robin was standing in front of the sink and my Mother came up beside her and placed her hand on the small of her back. They smiled at each other, and then my mother grabbed a knife out from the sink and went to the counter to chop up some veggies. Their interaction was completely platonic and didn't seem intimate at all, but it was like a light went off in my head."
Frost snapped his fingers to emphasize his epiphany.
"All of a sudden it occurs to me that they might be a couple, and thats when I started to notice all the little glances, gentle touches, and how the moved together when in each other space. When I added it all together, they seemed less like two friends and more like two people who were in love."
Frost smiled as he took another sip of coffee.
"Huh….." Jane sat for a bit trying to figure out how to frame her next question. There were a lot of thoughts swimming around in her head, and it was hard to gather them up and put them together into a cohesive inquiry. "When do you think your Ma figured out that she liked women?" Nervousness started to make her ramble a bit. "I mean… she was with your father for so many years, did she know back then or did she figure it out when she met Robin?"
Frost let out a tiny chuckle at Jane nervous demeanor. "Um… I'm not sure. We never really talked about it."
"Really?" Jane was surprised by Frost's answer. "Why not?"
"Well…. It's not like I'm uncomfortable talking with my mother about it, or that I don't support her relationship with Robin. They totally have 100% of my love and support…." Frost thought for a bit. "It's just that I didn't require an explanation to help me understand their relationship, so I never sought one out. The way I saw it was that my Mom loved my Father for many years and now she loves Robin. It is what it is." He said simply.
Frost made eye contact with Jane and saw a perplexed look upon her face.
"You're not a little curious? Jane asked.
Frost adjusted himself in his chair.
"Maybe I'm a bad son." He said as he shrugged his shoulders. "Maybe I should have talked to my Mom about it, but to me it wasn't an issue, and it never occurred to me to ask. I just figured that it was my Mom's story to tell and when she wanted to tell me about it, I would be there for her."
Touched by Frost's words. "You're not a bad son. In fact, I think you're the best son any mother could have." Jane said sweetly.
"AWE shucks. Such kind words. I did know you were such a softy, Jane." Frost said in a sarcastic yet sweet tone.
Jane chucked a pencil at Frost for his sarcastic remark. Frost chuckled as he swatted away the pencil.
Jane took a sip of coffee before she continued her inquiry.
"Do you think your Ma really did love your dad? I mean, considering that she is now with Robin."
"I think that at one time my Mom loved my Father very much. When I was little, she would tell me her favorite story about my Father. It was the day that he asked her to marry him. They both were 19 years old, and my Father was a different man back then. He was fun and exciting to be around. He had a little bit of a wild side to him, and apparently an amazing sense of humor. He could make my mom laugh uncontrollably by just looking at her."
Frost's voice sounded like he was reciting a fairytale.
" There wasn't anything special about the day, it was just another day of them hanging out. My Father took her to this little diner that was located on the edge of town. It was his favorite place to eat because it had the best burgers, shakes, and a jukebox. He got up and walked to the jukebox and plunked a few quarters in and selected a few songs. The first song to play was Cruisin' by Smokey Robinson. My father returned to the table and offered his hand to my Mom and pulled her out from her seat. He held their hands up and slid his other hand around her waist, and they started to sway with the music."
Frost closed his eyes for a bit, so the memory would become clearer in his mind.
"They danced their way to the center of the diner, he twirled my mom around and then pull her close. She then rested her head against his shoulder and felt his chest vibrate as he hummed along with the song. She felt like they were the only two people on the planet. At that moment nothing else existed, or even mattered. After the song was over, My mother went to go sit down, but as she turned she felt my Father tug on her arm. She turned and found him standing there looking at her like she was the most beautiful thing he has ever seen. He bent down on one knee and proposed right there. She accepted of course, and he swept her up into a big hug and swung her around, kissing her the entire time. The few patrons and workers in the dinner whistled and clapped while shouting congratulations. My mom and dad took a bow and thanked everyone for the well wishes and left to go celebrate in a more private location."
Frost waggled his eyebrows.
"Later that night she asked my Father why he chose that moment to propose and he told her that in that moment he couldn't possibly be able to love her any more than he did. My mom told me that after hearing my Father's words her heart was so full of love that it felt like she wasn't able to contain it all. The only other time she felt that way was when I was born."
Frost smiled bashfully.
"So yes. I do believe that my Mom was very much in love with my Father in the beginning, but as the years wore on and my father career progressed and he became the hardass that he now is, I think the love they shared faded. My parents marriage had it's share of problems that caused them to drift apart, and I can't say for sure if part of the reason why their loved faded was because my mother realised that she was attracted to women, but what I do know is that when she met Robin, her true self was able to come to light."
A silence fell between them as Jane contemplated what Frost told her.
"Is there anything else you want to know?" Frost asked softly.
"I'm sorry for the interrogation, Frost. I don't mean to be so nosey, I'm just curious about how a person can feel a certain way for most of their lives and then BOOM..." Jane slammed her hand down against her desk. "... Out of nowhere feel a different way."
"No worries partner. After all you are the daughter of Angela Rizzoli." Frost chuckled a bit at Jane glaring at him. "I believe that you are who you are, but for certain aspects it might take a person awhile to realize what these aspects are and what they mean. If you are really curious I'm sure you can talk to my mother about it." Frost offered
"Naw!" Jane's hands waving off Frost's offer. "I was just a little curious… it's nothing big, and I don't what to bother your Mother."
"Ok then. If we are done here, Im gonna scoot to the little boys room because all this coffee is running through me." Frost said as he pushed away from his desk.
"Hey." Jane tapped Frost's arm as he walked passed. "Thanks."
"No prob."
"Since it slow, I'm gonna head to the gym to work out a bit. Give me a call if anything exciting happens." Jane said as she grabbed her phone.
"Sure thang." Frost smiled as she passed by.
AN2: I hope this Ch. wasn't too boring. It's a bit of a transitional chapter. Please let me know what you think.
