Chapter 9: The Games

If there is one thing about mortals, it's that you should never, ever, underestimate them. Gosh, the games completely fooled me.

I leaned forward in my seat, my eyes glued on Lucas, the mortal. He was a tall, Caucasian, skinny looking guy. He had on glasses, which he took off and threw to the crowd, whom cheered like crazy. His clothes consisted of a black training suit. His black hair reminded me of Nico. Any who, Lucas walked up towards the middle of the arena, waiting for whatever the test had prepared for him.

Glass walls came from the ground towards the top of the arena; protecting us from Lucas' test. Suddenly, a table with three weapons appeared in front of him. There was: a net, dagger, and a sword.

He picked the dagger.

"Dumb mortal," Gabrielle muttered. I laughed, agreeing with her. Considering his options, he should have picked the sword. The sword will be great for offense.

Double doors from the east side of the arena opened. I glanced at the judges, their faces showing no expression. I had the urge to go to them and ask what they were looking for. I would have gone, if they weren't heavily guarded.

Two metallic hellhounds came out from the double doors. Lucas backed up. I wondered what skill he was best at. Due to the fact he picked a dagger, it might be defense. Definitely not combat, due to his physical appearance.

One of the hellhounds circled him, while the other one just stared at him. Lucas started sweating, his eyes studying the creatures. I would be, too. I watched with curious eyes what Lucas would do next. He surprised me.

He looked down and dropped the dagger. The hellhound who was circling him stopped to join the first one. The first one stared at Lucas, his head cocked to one side. Then, it lunged at Lucas.

Lucas immediately re acted, picked up his dagger, and fell back on the floor. I gasped as the hellhound landed on him, but then, poof! It disappeared. Lucas grinned, the other two hellhounds growled.

He hit its soft spot.

The remaining hellhound lunged and Lucas stepped aside. As the hellhound skirted to a stop, Lucas backed away as far as he could.

"He is smart, but not so smart." Gabrielle muttered.

Lucas looked at the hellhound and threw his dagger at it. He missed by a long shot. Through the corner of my eye, I saw the judges talking to each other. One of them told Star something and she nodded. She pressed a button and the speakers turned on.

"Mortals, demigods, and monsters, I present you Lucas, the winner, and the only mortal on the quest!"

Cheers erupted, but I sat still. It didn't make sense. There were supposed to two mortals and the best one would go. I stared at the judges, their expressions unreadable. Gabrielle stopped cheering and said, "Never underestimate a mortal."

I nodded.

Soon, the remaining hellhound was shut off and escorted back into the doors. Rose congratulated Lucas who was half proud and half confused. Rose smiled and the crowd calmed down. "Our next hero will be Nick, son of Apollo!"

"What happened to the monster?" I asked Gabrielle. She shrugged.

I waved as Nick confidently (not) walked towards the center of the arena. So far, I have only seen the mortal, Lucas. Either the judges are picking at random people, or they're looking for something specifically in each person (or monster).

A table appeared with different options: a shield, a sword, and a bottle of Greek fire. Nick picked the shield. I wondered what his plan would be. All he had was defense.

I leaned even more forward in my seat, anticipating what surprise he would get.

Suddenly, a Cyclops appeared from the west door. Nick gulped. This Cyclops was 12 feet tall, with big arms and legs. His eye was glaring at Nick. In his hand, he had a giant spiked club. These features weren't looking bright for Nick.

Nick slowly moved east, his shield in front of hm. I watched as the Cyclops ran towards him, head on. Nick rolled out of the way just in time. He glanced up, the lights staring back at him.

Smart, kid.

I ignored the voice. I was more worried about his life than his intelligence. Nick suddenly grinned and closed his eyes, his shield in front of him. The crowd started muttering. The Cyclops laughed and ran again. Before he could get close, a blast of light pushed him back. I smiled. Nick had managed to use the light's brightness against the Cyclops. After all, light is his specialty.

The Cyclops grunted and before he could completely disintegrate, some people came from the west doors and shot him with a special liquid. Since the doors weren't guarded enough, monsters could come back to life. The Athenians and Hecate's people were able to create a potion to stop them from disintegrating, but also keep them stable. If you didn't have this option, you collected a bit of their dust and spread it around everywhere.

Nick smiled as the crowd cheered. Rose congratulated him and waited as the cheering stopped. Nick stayed next to the judges. Once everyone calmed down, Rose called the next hero, who happened to be Gabrielle. I squeezed her shoulder as she stood up.

"Good luck." Rosa told her with a warm smile. Gabrielle nodded her thanks and was ready to walk to the center of the arena when Alex stood up from the judges table and said, "We have called upon a short 15 minute break from these games. Thank you."

Gabrielle sat back down, a calm look replacing her nervous one. All of us demigods ended up going to our lounge room, which wasn't far from the arena.

Most of the light demigods ended up on the couch. Us dark ones started to play games. Helen sighed. "This is tiring."

"You're sitting on a couch, genius." Daphne replied.

Helen rolled her eyes. "I meant the game. We already know that Vicky-"I glared at her" -and Nick are going. Heck, even Gabrielle got chosen."

Michelle frowned. "What do you mean?"

Helen smiled all the attention on her. "Well come on, based on our progress they are the best ones. So why have the games?"

She did have a good point, until Bruno spoke up. "The games aren't to prove whose best. They are to test the individual's weakness and strengths. Don't you get it? Lucas used his intelligence to fight the hellhounds instead of his physical strength. Nick used his inner power. I expect Gabrielle using her magic and Victoria her creepy power. The monster will be used as protection. It's all balanced out."

"Wait a minute," I said, stopping Helen to argue back. "Who said I was going?"

Drake rolled his eyes. "Don't be stupid Victoria; you're the most powerful here."

Eric nodded. "As much as I hate to admit it, your power is strong enough."

Derek nodded, too. "Your power can do what no one can: extract the living from someone."

The room got cold. My power of death was feared, which meant people feared me. It was rare for someone who could clearly state it and not stutter. Nick was about to say something when Hazel came in.

"Victoria," She said. "May we speak?"

I warily nodded. Hazel barely spoke to me nowadays. I followed her outside the door, the hallway empty.

She spoke first. "Remember when you said Nico spoke to you?"

I nodded.

"Well, I told one of my close friends. She's the roman leader of Compound Alpha. She came for a visit and arrived just a few minutes ago."That's why we got the break, I thought. "And she said she received several dreams like that too, except they were of other demigods from the seven. She wants to speak with you right after the games are over."

I didn't know what to say. Could it have been possible for someone to be like me? Whatever the hell I am? I ended up saying, "Sure,"

Hazel smiled. "Great! Oh, and her name is Reyna by the way."

I nodded. "Thanks,"

Hazel kept smiling. "Good luck out there, Victoria." She hesitated before hugging me. I warily hugged her back. She patted me on the back and we let go. "Okay, make them never forget you!"

Cheers erupted from the crowd as Gabrielle took her place in the middle of the arena. The same table appeared in front of her. Her options were: Greek fire, something that looked like a stick, and a book.

Helen sat next to me, being late since she had to check if her mother brought her something. Since there was no space except Gabrielle's seat, she sat next to me.

"What is a book for? Is she going to read to her opponent to death?" Helen asked.

I snorted, ignoring her. Suddenly, I noticed a new charm bracelet underneath her long sleeve shirt. I frowned. Who would wear a long sleeved shirt in this heat? I rolled my eyes.

Gabrielle ended up picking the stick. Helen squinted. "Is that a wand or a stick?"

"Wand, most likely," I answered. She bit her bottom lip. I kept ignoring her comments as Gabrielle faced the creature from the north doors. It was a cheerleader.

"She looks like garbage in that outfit." Helen muttered as she examined her nails.

Gabrielle narrowed her eyes and muttered something. A cloud of purple smoke enveloped around the cheerleader. The cheerleader transformed into an empousai. She laughed at Gabrielle and lunged, but before her fangs could bite Gabrielle, she was pushed back by an invisible spell.

"What just happened?" Helen said her attention back on the Games.

"She used a protection spell." I answered.

Gabrielle moved back, the empousai getting mad each passing second. Then, she lunged again. This time she didn't miss. We all gasped as the creature slashed at Gabrielle's face, missing by a centimeter. Gabrielle was able to turn them over, her on top of the empousai. Then, the weirdest thing happened.

The empousai let out a wail, her body turning a dark blue. Suddenly, Gabrielle was sitting next to a donkey. Literally. We all laughed, Gabrielle soon joining us. I glanced at the judges, their faces still unreadable.

Gabrielle smiled as Rose congratulated her. As Gabrielle made her way back to her seat, Helen stood up and said, "Tell her congrats." Then she left.

Gabrielle sat next to me and said, "That was so scary."

I nodded. "Yeah, it looked terrifying."

Rose calmed the crowd down. "Our next hero is Victoria, daughter of Thanatos!"

I gulped, not really sure I was ready.
