Chapter Nine: The Rescue
Nemesis...
They hid in a small cove just outside the palace walls as Sapphire went in to go get Serenity. "Are you sure about this?" Darien asked as he looked over at King Jonathan. Jonathan looked over at him. "No, but we don't have many options." He answered. Darien sighed as he looked around the cove. He knew the king was right, but he couldn't shake this weird feeling he had.
She sat on the bed as she heard a knock come at the door. "Who's there?" She asked weakly. "Sapphire." The person on the other side answered. "Come in." She said as she sighed with relief. He entered her room and closed the doors behind him quickly. "Come Princess." He whispered softly as he approached her. "Where are we going?" She asked with confusion. "I am helping you escape." He answered. She looked at him with confusion, before her expression turned into concern. "What will happen to you?" She asked. He stared deep into her eyes for a moment before he smiled. "Don't worry about me, now come on we don't have much time..." He urged her as he gently took her hand and led her out of her room...
As they approached towards the palace doors, they both froze in their tracks at the sound of an angry voice. "What do you think you are doing, brother?" They both turned around quickly to find an angry Diamond standing before them. Sapphire pulled Serenity behind him as he drew his sword. "This ends now, Diamond. You have gone to far." Sapphire growled back. "How could you betray me like this?" Diamond roared. "Serenity, you must get out of here." Sapphire said over his shoulder. "No, I can't leave you here alone..." "Please, your father and Prince Darien are in a cove just outside the palace walls waiting for you.." He whispered as he turned around to face her.
She stared deep into his eyes as he told her this, but yet she couldn't bring herself to leave him to face his brothers wrath alone. "I am not leaving with out you." She answered stubbornly. He sighed for he knew he couldn't change her mind. Then all of a sudden he watched her eyes widen in fear at what was behind them. "Sapphire look out!" She screamed. He turned his head to find a ball of dark energy hurdling straight for them. He turned his head back towards her as he only had time to shove her out of the way.
She landed on the palace floor hard as she heard Sapphires chilling scream ring through her ears...
Cove...
As they waited patiently, they heard screams coming from with in the palace. "Something's gone wrong." Darien said as he drew his fathers sword. "Your highness, wait. You'll never make it through the Palace walls." Thomas pointed out. "I have to try, I am not letting him take her away again, not when we are this close to getting her back." He answered as he ran out of the cove, towards the entrance..
Inside the Palace...
"Sapphire, get up!" She pleaded as she crawled her way to him. Diamond glared at them. "Sapphire, open your eyes, please!" She cried as tears fell down her cheeks as she cradled him in her arms. He slowly opened his eyes at the sound of her pleas. He starred up into her blue eyes. She truly was beautiful inside and out. "You have to get out of here..." He said weakly. "I can't leave you, like this..." She cried. "Don't worry princess...He's my brother, he doesn't have the heart to kill me..I will be fine now please go while you can." He said weakly as he slowly rose out of her arms to his feet. "Go!" He yelled as he looked back at her. She nodded as she scrambled to her feet and ran towards the doors to the palace.
She didn't dare look back as she could hear the battle between two brothers go on behind her. As she got closer to the doors fear started to rise inside of her as they busted open. Her heart was beating wildly inside of her chest as a figure stepped through the doors. She closed her eyes tightly as she fell to her knees in defeat. "Serena!" The figure called out her name. The sound of his voice made her eyes fly open as tears ran down her cheeks. "Darien!" She cried as he made his way over to her and scooped her up in his arms. He ran out of the palace with her in his arms as they headed back towards the cove where Thomas and The king waited for his return...
They entered the cove and Darien put Serena down on her feet. "Father!" She cried as she ran from Darien's side into her fathers arms. "Serenity!" He whispered as he wrapped his arms around her. "Thank god your safe!" "Father we have to go help him!" She pleaded as she pulled out of his embrace. The King stared down at his daughter in confusion. "We have to help him or Diamond will kill him!" "Serenity..What we need to do is get you home, where you will be safe." The king answered. "No.." She yelled as she pulled away from her father. "I will not leave him here to die...Sapphire risked his life to set me free.. I will not just turn my back on him now..."
"Okay, Serena.." Darien spoke softly. She turned to look at him. "Thomas and I will go help Sapphire, but please go back to the Moon with your father..I couldn't bare it, if something were to happen to you.." He said softly as he took her hand and kissed it softly. Fear and Tears whelped up in her eyes as the fire and anger vanished from her face. "That's not what I meant..." She began but was silenced as he pulled her into his embrace and kissed her deeply. Tears fell from her eyes as she kissed him back. "Come back to me.." She whispered as she pulled out of the kiss. He smiled down at her as he wiped the tears from her face. "Promise." He said softly as he kissed her hand. Then he and Thomas headed out of the cove and headed back towards the palace as King Jonathan took his daughter back to the Moon.
As Darien and Thomas entered the palace, it was silent. Chills ran down Darien's spine as they walked further into the palace. To their left they saw Sapphire lying on the floor. They quickly ran to his side. Thomas bent down and looked over his body as Darien kept a look out for Diamond to return. "He's alive, but barely." Thomas said after a few moments. "Alright well lets get him out of here." Darien said as he turned to look at Thomas. "You aren't going anywhere!" A voice growled from the shadows. Thomas and Darien looked back just as a blast of electricity headed straight for them...
The Moon Kingdom...
Serena stood in the moon gardens waiting for their return. It seemed like hours since her and her father had returned home. She wondered what had went wrong. She ran her fingers over the soft petals of the moon flowers as the stars twinkled brightly above her, when a servant came rushing into the gardens. "Your highness... Come quick.." She cried. "Luna what's going on?" She asked as her friend as she looked over at her. Luna took a moment to catch her breath before she spoke again. "They have returned your highness." Serena turned towards the palace and ran as fast as her legs would carry her.
As she entered the palace Serena froze in her place as she looked before her. Tears instantly fell from her eyes as she laid eyes on him. "What happened? Where's Darien?" She asked as panic began to rise with in her. Thomas looked over at the young princess with sad eyes. His uniform was tore and he had scraps and bruises on his face. "Princess..." He began as he walked towards her. She stared long and hard at him. "Thomas...where is he? He's okay right?" She asked shakily. As he stood in front of her, he pulled her into his arms gently. "I don't know...Everything happened so fast, I am afraid he didn't make it out." He said softly as he held her tighter.
She felt her legs become shaky as her breath caught in her throat with tears burning her eyes. She stood there like that for a few moments before she finally let out a small cry as her legs gave out and they both slowly fell to their knees. "No..." She whispered in between her sobs. Memories danced through her mind, memories of how they met and the time they spent together...
Sir Thomas entered King Jonathan's study a few hours later. "Thomas, I know you didn't tell my daughter everything that happened and for that I am thankful for, but I must know what all happened." He said as he stood near the window staring out it. Thomas stared at the king for a moment before he began. "We entered the Palace and found Sapphire lying on the floor. So we made our way over to him, he was barely alive. As we were a bout to get him out of there, Diamond through a surprise attack on us. We barely had time to get out of the way, there was nothing we could do to get Sapphire out of the way. So Darien and I got to our feet and began to run out of the palace, one minute he was behind me and the next he was gone..." Thomas sighed as he finished his story.
King Jonathan turned around to look at Thomas. "Do you think he is alive?" He asked. Thomas stared into the King's eyes. They were filled with pain and hope. "Why do you ask?" "Thomas please just answer my question, do you think he is alive?" "I don't know, it's possible. Why? What are you planning to do?" Thomas asked. The King turned back around toward the window. "I can't bare to watch my daughter go through the same pain I went through, when I lost her mother. If there is any chance that he is still alive, I will go to Nemesis and find him along with my army." He answered. "Your highness, Diamond is powerful, you can't possibly think you can just storm in there easily and bring Prince Darien back, if he is still alive." Thomas stated truthfully. "I know it might not be easy, but for my daughters sake I will try."
Nemesis...
He slowly opened his eyes to find nothing but darkness all around him. He felt a sharp pain in his right side. He instantly grabbed his side as he cried out in pain. He felt something warm and wet on his hand that was holding his side, he couldn't see, but he knew he was bleeding. He breathed in deep as sharp pains kept coming... He closed his eyes and breathed out as he saw her beautiful face smiling at him... "Serena..." He whispered.
