Chapter 9

~~~Ambulance~~~
Nancy and Frank were loaded into ambulances, Frank seemed to be in stable condition. He was just knocked unconscious. They would know more once a doctor could check him. But the EMT was pretty sure he had a few broken ribs and from the raspy sound when he breathes. He may need surgery to repair may be a collapsed lung.
"She is coding again; I don't know if she will make it to the hospital." Firmly said the EMT as the door closed behind her.
They worked on Nancy for 20 minutes till she was stable enough to get her moved. But she was barely hanging on. She coded 2 more times on the way to the hospital.
~~~Hospital~~~

At the hospital, everyone had filed into a waiting room. Waiting to hear news about the two teenagers was maddening. Carson Drew was pacing the floor. Laura Hardy was rubbing small circles on her husband's back. She had only seen her husbands this distraught once and that was when Nancy's mother Elizabeth was killed. Joe was sitting in a corner with Iola as she tried her best to console him. He never thought in his wildest dreams that when they were found, one would be dead.

Everyone looked up as they heard a doctor ask for the family of Frank Hardy. Laura and Fenton stood up as the doctor approached them.

"Your son will be fine. He had some internal bleeding, but that has all been repaired." Said the doctor.

"Can you tell us any information about Ms. Nancy Drew? She was found with our son." Inquired Laura

"I am sorry; all I know is that her injuries were a lot more extensive than his. As soon as she is stable I am sure a doctor will come out to give you some information. You may see Frank in a few hours once he is out of recovery and been placed into a room."

The doctor then turned and left, leaving them to their thoughts.

All were thankful that Frank was alive. His parents and brother knew that if Nancy did not survive the young man they loved and cherished would forever be changed. All was saying silent prayers hoping for the best income. The next few hours were going to be torture.

~~~Five Hours Later~~~
The Hardy's and Carson were waiting in Franks room waiting for him to wake up. All the others had left to get some rest. They all said they would be back first thing in the morning to see how they both were doing. Joe thought it was strange that Callie nor Ned stayed to keep watch over Frank or Nancy. But he just chalked it up to just being tired. Maybe he was just over thinking it.
One of the doctors that had been performing the surgery on Nancy came into the room and let them know she was doing.
"She is out of surgery, but she is in critical condition. If she makes it through the night she will most likely survive. She had been touch and go, they almost lost her a few times on the table. Her internal bleeding had been severe. All of her broken bones have been set."
Carson stood and shook the doctor's hand and thanked her for all they did to help his daughter. The doctor nodded and left the room.
"She is going to be okay, right mom."
She ran to her son's side and kissed him on his cheek.
"We don't know yet, they said if she can survive the night her chances are good."
Silent tears started to fall down his cheeks. Joe suggested to his parents and Mr. Drew that they should go ahead and go home and get some sleep. He would stay with Frank and let them know if Nancy's condition changed. They said their good-byes, leaving Frank and Joe alone.
"It's okay Frank let it out."
He began crying, his body shook with each sob. Joe just hugged his brother. He knew that was all he could do was let him cry. After a little, his cries calmed down and Frank had fallen asleep. Joe got himself comfortable in the chair beside the bed and drifted off to sleep. He was woken up a few hours later by Frank crying in his sleep for Nancy. He knew his brother had it bad for him, but he never realized how strongly he felt for her. He knew Frank never felt this way for Callie. He loved Callie, but his passion for Nancy was so different. She accepted him even for his flaws. Joe knew Callie wanted Frank to quit being a teen detective, but he also knew his brother loved helping people.
"Frank, wake up you are dreaming."
Frank opened his eyes and meekly smiled at his brother. A nurse entered the room to get his vitals.
"Ma'am, can you tell me how Ms. Drew is"
"She is in ICU. She is in the room 402, it is the closest to the nurse's station. Her doctor wants her under constant care throughout the night."
Code Blue Room 402 Code Blue 402 blared over the P.A. System. Frank and Joe looked at each with horror written all over their faces. That was Nancy's room.
"Can you please find out if she okay. I don't think I can live without her." Whispered Frank as fresh tears fell on the blanket.
"I will keep you updated on her throughout the night." As she took her leave from the room
She coded two more times. Frank was beginning to feel like he had lost her. Joe decided it was best to call his parents to let them know she had coded three times so far tonight.
"Hello Hardy residence"
"Dad. You might want to bring Mr. Drew back to the hospital. She has coded three times. It's not looking like she will make it through the night"
"Okay, son we will be there soon."
~~~Hardy Home~~~

Fenton hung the phone up and woke his wife.

"Sweetheart, we need to get to the hospital it is not looking good for Nancy"

"I will wake Bess and George. You go wake Carson." As she started getting dressed

She walked down the hallway to Joe's room and woke the girls up letting them know what was going on. Both jumped up, they had not changed. They went to bed in their clothes.

Fenton went downstairs to the den where his old friend was sleeping on the couch. He opened the door and there was Carson is sobbing into his hands.

"She's not doing well is she"

"No"

Neither said anything as they went outside to wait for the others.

"I tried getting a hold of Ned and Callie, but neither answered their phone." Said George as she was going out the front door of the house.

The car ride to the hospital was quiet, too quiet. Each was left with their thoughts. All was hoping for the best, but realizing the worst is what seemed like was happening.

Once there Carson went up to the ICU to see his daughter. Everyone else went to Frank's room to wait on him.

"Hello boys," said their mother as she walked to Frank's sleeping form and gently stroked his cheek.

Frank opened his eyes, they had lost their glow. He was usually such a vibrant boy. But his eyes held no life at anymore.

"I already tried to get ahold of Ned and Callie, but couldn't get a hold of them.

"I will try Iola" as he dialed her number "That's odd she didn't answer either"

Carson entered a few minutes later.

~~~~Elsewhere~~~
A petite brown-haired girl with stunning green eyes was punching Dave in the face. Peter hit the ground from the shock of her hitting him so forcefully. The other girl and guy with her just laughed.
"We warned you about getting her mad"
Jack and Dave watched in amusement. They told him not to say anything to her.
"How could you lose them. You better hope they can't identify you." she hissed at him
"We hurt her pretty bad. I doubt she will survive the night."
"You had better hope this does not come back to us. She will definitely not be happy" as he pointed to her. "You will have to deal with these girls"
~~~~Frank's Room~~~~

"If she can last a few more hours the doctor says they are hopeful"

It came over the P.A. system again code blue in room 402. She had to be fighting for her to keep coming back.
"I need to see her" pleaded Frank "Please, if she doesn't make it, I need to tell her goodbye while she is still alive.

Carson shook his head and went to talk with the doctors to see what could be arranged. As he entered back into the room you could see tears had been falling down his cheeks.

"Come on Bess, Joe and George, let's go pay Nancy a visit. And when we come back We can help get Frank to her." As he led the teenagers out of the room.

When the teenagers and Carson returned to Frank's room they all had been crying.

"Iola didn't come home last night." Spoke Chet as walked to George to hold her. "I even talked to Callie's parents and she didn't come home last night. They thought she was here with Frank."

"We still haven't heard from Ned as well."

"You don't think who did this to Frank and Nancy grabbed them as a way to torture you guys more." Fear in his voice

"Frank, if you are ready we will take you to see Ms. Drew now?" asked an orderly as he entered the room

"Yeah, I am ready. You guys wait here." As he was helped into a wheelchair.

"Frank, you need to prepare yourself for when you see her. She is on a machine; it is helping her breathe right now." Said, Mr. Drew, as he walked beside Frank

~~~Nancy's Room~~~
Frank gasped as he was rolled into her room. There was Nancy before him in a bed with bruises cover over half of her beautiful face. He grabbed one of her hands and held it close to his face. His tears fell gently onto her hand. On her arms and jaw, there were visible bite marks.
It seemed like just a few minutes that he had been there at her bedside. But the grumbling of his stomach let him know he had been there a few hours. The nurse came in and told him that it was time to go back to his room. He needed to eat and rest. But Nancy wouldn't let go of his hand.
