Chapter 9- Like Uncle Like Nephew
Randall slowly opened the door to his home; a solemn look was cast upon his face. Was he still welcome here?
He felt Rex rush past him and into the apartment with an existed giggle as he went to see is Alex was home yet.
"Hi Aunt Alex!" Rex shouted from beyond the door.
"Hey Rex Sweetie, wow your getting big." Alex's voice was high and pleasant obviously something she had put on for Rex. Randall could only imagine how low and dark it would sound when he finally faced her.
Randall let out a sigh as he entered the apartment and closed the door softly behind him; he looked over the kitchen to see Alex giving Rex a hug standing up to look at the little monster with a smile that was obviously fake. He let out a small smile at her efforts, no matter what anybody would say about her she could act when the time came to it.
Randall softly pushed his glasses up his face and walked to the entrance to the kitchen where he leaned on the wall and looked at Alex's pose as she patted Rex on the head and pulled a packet of monster munch cookies from the cubed. She handed them to Rex who smiled and began to run to the room until he was stopped by Randall.
"Forgetting something, squirt?" Randall said as he plastered a fake smile like Alex to his nephew.
Rex let out a small giggle and then realised what Randall meant. He turned to face Alex who had crossed her arms and was staring Randall dead in the eyes as his voice announced his presence. Randall got the idea he was staying in the apartment by a thread and one more way of pushing Alex would result in a cold night an allay way cooped up in a cardboard box. Or he could just go and stay at Mikes for the night either way they were still pretty bad, considering the cold night and Mike's cooking skill that you had to eat both punishments would be hell to Randall.
Rex looked over to Alex and knew it would be better not to ask, he let out a little giggle and then finally spoke. "Thank you for the cookies Aunt Alex."
Alex's face softened for the little monster as she nodded to appreciate his thanks until the little monster ran into the room and dumped himself in front of the TV and grabbed the remote that would keep him occupied for a few minutes.
Randall looked back over to Alex seeing that she had turned her back to him and was writing something down on a piece of paper, from the look of it just another bill. Randall let out a small sigh as his attention was drawn to the vase of roses on the table that had began to wilt a little. A couple of the petals had fallen onto the table cloth elegantly as the edges of them resembled a darker shade to the red flour, Alex wasn't the sort of girl to buy flowers four but just once Randall thought a dozen red roses would be nice for her. Who knew somebody could be so happy about receiving flowers it was
like the best gift Randall could ever give her. He remembered her smile like nothing else she was just happy to have somebody who cared. But Randall still cared about her more than anything she was his Angel and he wasn't going to leave her.
Randall took in a breath and stepped over to Alex, he reached his hand to her shoulder as she spun on her heels she slapped his hand away from her.
"Your nephew needs looking after, Randall go see if he's okay, I don't want to see your face right now." Alex words were sharp, cold and haunting as they lingered in Randall's head as she turned away again.
"Al…"
"Bye." Alex snapped as he could see her reflection in the window was more anger than anything. A good rule to follow with Alex is to give her space when she was depressed or angry as Randall knew what she could do to others in rage, or more frightening herself.
Randall turned to go see what Rex was up to when his gaze was drawn to the roses again he picked up one of the stray petals and studied its change of colour. In the centre a rich red and filled with life that was shortly to end soon. The outside of the petal was a deeper red with a hint or brown to show its death was close and that there was no reason to stay alive. Randall knew which part of the petal he wanted to feel like and which part he was. He placed it back on the table closer to Alex and went to the entrance to the living room.
He heard Alex mutter something. "Hate you at the moment." Which only caused Randall's heart to sink further.
He softly looked over his shoulder to see Alex still trying to avoid him keeping her gaze fixed on whatever she was doing. His lips parted slowly as he mustard up a sentence that lit up his heart every time it came from his mouth. "Love you too." Randall whispered softly as he went over to join Rex.
Randall sat down on the sofa and was then joined by Rex who brought him a book up expecting Randall to help with his reading skills, for a little kid who would normally be interested in anything that blows up the little guy still liked to read. This only made Randall even prouder of this little kid.
"Help me learn the tough words Uncle Randy…" Rex said as he let out a smile.
"Okay squirt, let's hear you read." Randall said as he opend the book and Rex sat on his lap as always both monsters cupped their hands around the book and studied the pages Randall now thankfully could read the text with his glasses.
"Once upon a time there was a dark king down, filled with war, magic and dragons…. Many monsters who wanted to prove their skills would challenge these great cre… umm cre…."
"Spell it out squirt. Cre-tures."
"Creatures…?" Rex blurted out as Randall helped him.
"Good, keep going."
"The kingdom was then attacked one fine day as Darben the ter…" Rex drew a troubled face he knew what the word was but he suddenly couldent see it on the paper.
"Spell it out again…" Randall said as he looked over to Rex.
"I can't… I can't…"
"Course you can… Let me help." Randall said as he was about to spell the word out for the little monster Rex interrupted.
"Uncle Randall I can't read the word because I can't see it anymore." Rex said so innocently and he made a small smile to hide the fact that he thought he would get in trouble.
"You cant see the words?" A voice said from behind them. Both Randall and Rex turned their heads to see Alex leaning against the wall with a puzzled expression. "Rex Honey come here."
Rex jumped down from Randall and went over to Alex she knelt to his level and raised a finger near his eye. "Follow my finger buddy." Rex did so trying to keep his gaze on Alex as she inducted a small eye examination, his eyes fell lazy and slow as they became a blurry from the movement of Alex.
"Okay Rex, look at the picture on the wall near the door can you read it to me?" Alex said as she looked at the picture near the door that said 'home sweet home.'
Rex looked at the image with intense concentration. "It's fuzzy…"
"Go as close to it as you want until you can see it." Alex said as she stood up straight and watched Rex walk over to it standing only about a foot away from it he finally smiled and said "It says home sweet home."
Alex walked over to Rex and picked up a small flashlight that she had bought recently with the constant power outages. She knelt down in front of Rex and shone it in his eyes softly. "Keep your eyes open Rex." Alex muttered as she studied his eyes, Alex finally stopped and stood up giving Rex a small pat on the head but a concerned look still reached her face.
Randall stood up as he knew Alex would talk to him if it depended on Rex's welfare. "What's wrong with him." Randall said as he walked over to the pair.
Alex instinctively took a step back from Randall and spoke only one sentence before retreating back to the kitchen sending the message she didn't want to be followed. "I think your sister needs to take Rex to an eye doctor, I think he needs glasses." Alex then left and Randall let out a frown he felt something snap another part of his heart had shattered from Alex's absence.
"Glasses?" Rex said with a puzzled look. "Yey I'll look like Uncle Randall then." Rex cheered.
"Do you really want to be like him?" Alex muttered under her breath hoping Rex didn't hear and yet hoping Randall would.
Randall placed a hand on Rex's shoulder and then looked over to Alex. "I'll let his mother know tomorrow when she comes to pick him up."
She let out a shrug to say whatever and then returned her attention back to the bill.
"Hey squirt you wanna go to the park?" Randall said as he stroked his nephews one frond.
Rex's face lit up as he hugged Randall and pulled him over to the door. "Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!"
