Chapter Nine
Bound By Blood, By Blood Undone
"I'm turning into...a vampire?" I asked, the boys had told me the process of becoming a vampire. "I drank your blood?" I pointed to David, he remained silent. "But I'm stuck in vampire limbo until I make my first kill, does that sound right?" David slowly nodded.
"More or less. You're taking it rather well."
"Well, I've heard accusations of you being vampires twice in one night, so I guess I just believe you."
"That's good." Dwayne said with a grin, pointing to Marko who was still resting in the rafters. "You should have seen his reaction."
"Whatever Dwayne tells you is a lie!" Marko shouted, not looking at us. I glanced at Paul, he wouldn't look at me this whole time.
"Paul?" I asked him quietly, he jerked his head up, as if I pulled him out o his thoughts.
"Hmm?"
"Are you okay?"
"I just-" He sighed, his head on my shoulder. "I didn't want to push you into this..."
"We didn't have much of a choice." David pointed out. "The Frogs were after her."
"I don't get it, why me? Why not you?" All the boys were quiet.
"Well, Paul, I suppose you should explain this." I looked at the blonde, he smiled awkwardly.
"Well, whenever a vampire sees someone they are..." He paused, trying to find the right word. "Attracted to? We watch them for a while, get to know them from a far. And eventually, we find the one we will spend eternity with."
"A mate for lack of a better word." David piped up.
"How many 'mates' have you had?" I asked, nervous of the answer.
"That's the thing." He pressed his forehead against mine. "Vampire mate for life Eve." This caught me off guard and no doubt, my cheeks were flaming.
"If the bond is especially strong, the vampire occasionally will appear in dreams." I thought back to the weeks before I met the boys, I heard Paul's voice in my dreams.
"Sometimes the feeling isn't shared, so I'd understand if you-" I interrupted Paul with a light kiss.
"Of course it's shared you idiot." A rock clattered next to us.
"Get a room!" Marko shouted playfully. Laughter echoed around the cave.
"Excuse me for a second." Paul kissed my forehead and started after Marko.
"Shit!" Marko exclaimed as he scrambled to get away. As the two chased each other, David grabbed my shoulder.
"Paul would prefer to put this off as long as possible, but you need to feed. And soon." My eyes shot to Paul, who was now wrestling Marko to the ground.
"What happens if I don't?"
"The thirst will build..." As if on queue, I felt a burning sensation, starting in my heart and spreading throughout my body.
"And?" David shrugged.
"You'll die."
I woke up, bleary eyed and still craving sleep. Like my other nights with the boys, my memory was a blur. Stretching lazily, I reached for my nearby shades first. David told me about the rules if being a half-vampire ad what to be careful about. First things first, I jumped into the shower, washing away the sleepiness, I didn't even have time to dry my hair hen my doorbell rang. Throwing on jeans and a shirt I made my way downstairs and was surprised to see who was at my door. "Ace?" I asked, even with the shades on my eyes ached slightly from the sunlight.
"Hey Eve." He brushed past me, I tensed as our skin touched. He smelled of blood. I cleared my throat and closed the door. "Did I come at a bad time?" Brushing my wet hair out of my eyes I shook my head.
"What's up?" I asked him, walking towards the kitchen. I opened the fridge and handed him a bottle of soda.
"Thanks." He took it with a shaky hand, I glanced at him. Bags were under his eyes, signs of sleepless nights.
"Are you okay?" He nodded, popping the cap of the bottle and taking a long drink.
"Chad sent me." I glared at the floor.
"Did he now?" I trembled with anger, and the burning in my throat would not go away. I searched through the fridge for a drink. "And why is that?"
"He wanted to make sure you were okay. Said you got into a fight last night."
"Tch." I flipped the cap off my soda and waved it in a sort of shrug. "That's one word for it." I took a drink. Whatever Ace said, I couldn't hear. My head was filled with a ringing sound, it was deafening. Then, the pain hit. "Aah!" I clenched my chest, it felt like my heart was burning. I fell to one knee, the bottle slipping out of my hand and crashing to the floor. Using one hand to keep myself up, Ace rushed over quickly.
"Eve?" He bent down next to me, his heart rate increased. I could hear the blood in his veins. "What's wrong? Talk to me!" He went to place a hand on my shoulder but I quickly jerked back. Instead, his hand fell straight onto a piece I glass. "Shit!" He quickly wrapped his hand in his shirt, but I could smell the coppery scent. The burning in my throat grew stronger. "Damn it. I'll be right back." He stood up and walked over to the sink, I followed behind him. As he ran his hand under the water, it sent red tendrils down the drain in a spiral. It was...mesmerizing. "Eve?" He glanced at me from the corner of his eyes. "You don't look so hot-" The next passed by in a blur. I spun Ace around, slamming him into a wall. He seemed dazed, almost disoriented by the speed. I could hear his wart pounding in his chest. It was the last thing I heard before I sank fangs, that I didn't know I had, into his throat.
David's POV
I told the boys to wait for me by the boardwalk. Paul had been a little distant since we introduce Eve to our lifestyle and I wanted to give him time to himself before she came around him again. Don't get me wrong, I supported the relationship. Paul was my brother, he deserved the happiness Eve seemed to bring him. But she couldn't stay out of the dark forever. And Paul wasn't willing to introduce her to that yet. Walking up to the door of the house, I knocked on it. "Eve?" No answer. "Hey, open up, it's David." Still no response. Did she go up to the boardwalk already? I started to leave when something stopped me. Blood. And lots of it. "Shit." I looked around, seeing no one around I knocked the door down with little effort. "Eve?!" Silence. "Dammit." I followed the smell into a kitchen area. I've seen lots I things in my time, but the brutality of the kill I saw in front of me caught me off guard. Only for a moment. I knelt next to the body and moved the head to the side, amazed it was still attached to the body. The face was slightly familiar, not enough to be concerned with. I hear a slight noise behind me. A small almost whimper like sound. Turning around, I saw Eve. Curled up in the corner, covered in blood and shaking like a leaf, yet unsurprisingly unconscious. I picked her up gently, no injuries that I could see. Sighing loudly, I set off for home. Paul didn't want her dragged into this? Well now she just got thrown in. And we would all have to deal with the consequences.
