Chapter Nine
*Lily's POV*
Ah, Saturday. I needed one of these days. School was such a drag, I could use some time to myself. Everyone was doing something today, so it was the perfect day for some down time. Renesmee was out with Jakey boy, my brother was out with Lizzy and Seth, and Masen should be hanging out with Ethan today.
I sighed when Ethan crossed my mind. The guy's been my crush since I was a kid. I really don't know what I see in him, but I see something.
I can't date him anyway, well I could, but he's suppose to be my uncle or brother, or something along the lines of that. My point is, he's family. It would be like if I dated Masen. We're not related by blood, but we're still family. It would be too weird for me personally.
Anyway I'm sure I can get over Ethan any day I'd like to. I have a bunch of guys wanting to date me in school, like that cute boy I spotted in Math with Carly. His name is Austin, he's 6'1, brownish-black hair, brown eyed, and a bunch of cute. Plus I'm 99.999% he wants to go out with me. He's been sending me 'the look' ever since I came to this school.
"Hey Lily bean," Masen said, ruffling my hair as he came into the living room with none other than Ethan right behind him. Oh great...This should be fun. "Whatcha doing?"
"I'm waiting for my mom. She's suppose to take me shopping, but she's been helping Aunt Ali with the baby," I replied, thinking back to little Abby. She's cute, but honestly I feel like something's up with this whole thing. Then again, that's me personally.
All in all, I'm just happy Aunt Alice and Uncle Jasper are happy with this new baby. They deserve their own daughter.
"So while she's there, I'm reading this," I told the boys as I held up my new teen vogue magazine.
"Ah, that thing you call literature," Masen said, joking with me. I rolled my eyes as I pushed him. God, Masen was just as annoying as Aidan at times.
I looked to see Ethan chuckle at our antics and I couldn't help but mentally sigh in my mind. Why does he have to be so darn cute?
Ugh! I'm trying to push past my crush, not develop even bigger feelings towards the hunky 6'2 brown haired, green eyed boy!
Masen sent me a look, probably reading my mind. He knows I have a crush on Ethan, along with all the other stinking mind readers in this family, but whatever. Nothing Masen can do or say will make me regret thinking this way.
"Look, Ethan and I are going out, but I let Aidan borrow my game controller and I want it back. Where did he leave it?" Masen asked me, reverting the topic.
"Check the meat head's room, that is if you can find it in his pile of crap," I told my cousin.
"But I thought he didn't even unpack his stuff?" Masen frowned in confusion.
"Yeah, but it's Aidan. He's the world's greatest pig, it's not to hard for him to mess up a place," I said.
Masen and Ethan both chuckled at this. I then watch Masen run up the stairs, leaving me alone with Ethan.
Oh goody.
"So..." Ethan trailed off after a few minutes. "What's up?"
"Um nothing much. You know, school," I replied, shrugging. "Nothing major...How's college going for you?"
"Good. It's nice your grandparents are paying for it. It's my first time going to college actually," he mused, walking around the room slowly while I sat down on the arm chair, just watching him. He had a really nice ass...STOP LILY!
"Really? But I thought you had a job before this?" I questioned, raising my eyebrows at him as I placed the magazine down on my lap.
"I did, but when your a vampire creature like myself it's easy to forge papers and learn the trade easy. Anyway my dad was into business before...Before he died, so I have all his papers and things. I would sometimes just go under his name to work," Ethan muttered, looking down at the floor.
He never really mentioned much about his life before his parent's death. I don't think any of us really know much about Ethan other than his parents died and his brother is missing. In fact two years ago he tried to find Lucas, his missing brother, but got nothing.
"Oh...Sorry," I said quickly, feeling bad that I brought up his parents.
"It's okay," He told me quietly as he fiddled with his hands.
"You know you never mention much about your parents or brother...This is a stupid question, but do you miss them?" I asked softly.
"It's not stupid, but yeah. I miss them a lot and it still kind of hurts, even though it was pretty long ago," He told me. "I didn't know them very long...I would've liked to have known them longer. You know, I only had parents for about two years."
"I know the feeling," I blurted out without thinking.
"Huh? Rose and Emmett...Oh. Right," He said, trailing off.
"Yep. Gwen and Matt," I muttered, speaking my birth parents' names. It's been a long time since I've said them out loud like this. I could feel the tears sting my eyes at the mention of their names.
"I'm sorry," He said softly.
"It's okay," I told him as I opened up my magazine. "It was a long time ago and in fact, I don't even remember Gwen and I have no memory of Matthew, so I don't even blame you. It doesn't even seem like I had any other parents besides Rose and Emmett."
Truth is, I remember Gwen very well, but I don't like the memory I have of her. You know, I can still see Gwen's face before she died. Looking back on it, she looked so horrible...and to think my brother and I did that to her...
I shook the thought of Gwen out and looked up at Ethan. He had a worried look in his eyes as I paused for a few moments.
"Are you okay?" he asked me, sitting down on the chair next to mine. "Because I'm sorry if I did..."
"No, I'm fine. I was just thinking," I mumbled, looking at him.
"You know you can tell me if it upset you or..."
"It didn't, don't worry Ethan. It didn't," I whispered, looking at him in the eyes. I felt like I was in a trance, just looking into his green eyes. They were really pretty.
"So, um hey. Anyway new friends at school?" He asked, breaking the moment up to a much more basic topic.
"Yeah a lot actually...Even a few possible boyfriends," I said, deciding to flaunt it off to him a bit. I wanted to see if this would make him jealous, or just show me some sort of sign.
Ethan frowned as he crossed his arms over his chest, "Boyfriends, Emmett would actually-"
"Yo! Ethan! Let's roll, I need to go out," Masen said, coming into the living room. "Bye Lily worm."
"Bye Mase-ive ass!" I called out to him as he then left the house, laughing. Ethan chuckled as he then took his jacket from the couch.
"Well it was nice talking to you Lil."
"You too Ethan," I said, smiling at him. I watched as he started to make his way out the door, but that's when I began to run towards the door without even really processing what I was thinking.
"And by the way," I said softly, getting his attention as I headed towards the door. "I don't know if this will help...But even though you only knew them for a couple of years...Be happy you remember them."
Ethan looked at me with a soft expression and simply nodded. "I will...Thanks."
"No prob," I responded, trying to keep my cool. Ethan just sent me a dazzling smile before he left the house with Masen.
I need to concentrate on Austin, but all I see is Ethan. This boy is going to drive me mad! I need to find someone my own age...Or looks like my age. Ethan and I would never work out anyway. My parents wouldn't allow it and he's way older than me. Then again, Uncle Ed is like ninety years older than Aunt Bella, but that's not the point. The point is we won't work out and I have to get my stupid little fantasies about Ethan out of my head.
"Ugh!" I groaned, getting up from the chair to go find my mom. I can see it now. Men are going to be the reason which drives me to my very doom.
"Lily? Are you okay?" I looked to see Lizzy, Aidan, and Seth in the hallway. All looking at me with curiosity.
"I'm fine. I'm just...Frustrated. Go back outside and do...Whatever you do," I muttered, rushing up the stairs. I needed to find my mother or at least get away from everything for a few moments.
"What is with the people in this house nowadays," Aidan cried out, throwing his arms up in the air in frustration as I reached the stop of the stairs.
"I don't know Aide. I don't know," Lizzy said, shrugging.
God, wait until those three are in my position. It's going to be a hell load of 'fun' for all. Growing up freaking sucks.
I need to shop.
*Renesmee's POV*
I smiled as I walked along side Jake in the park. It was kind of peaceful, if you forget about all the people that were walking around. It made me miss Forks. I miss the solitude of a small town and the way it would never have sun. You know it's silly, considering I grew up with some much sun as a kid to not miss it. I miss the rainy days and the smell of the forest after it rained. That was always my favorite smell.
"This is nice," I mused as I swung the small basket of food I got from the fridge. We planned to have a picnic somewhere in this park.
"It is. I missed hanging out with you," Jacob told me truthfully.
"Same," I agreed, smiling at him. I then looked around the park to see if I could ifnd a free space. "Um...Where do you want to find a new spot exactly?" I asked him, swinging the basket.
"I don't know." He shrugged, looking all around. "Hmmm...How about we set up the picnic right here by the pond?" Jacob suggested, sitting down on the grassy lawn right in front of me. I smiled as I then sat down right next to him.
I took a good look at my surroundings. There was a small pond with a couple of ducks swimming around in it. Not many people were around this area. A lot were taking walks around the park on the designated paths or playing games on the fields.
"Alright then," I said as I began to take out the sandwiches I prepared. I also had a thermos filled with blood. Since we are living in a city we normally take hunting trips to upstate New York and Canada during the weekend, or someone will just gather up a bunch of animal blood and we'll carry it around like this.
"Yuck," Jacob said, scrunching up his nose when he smelt the blood.
"What, it's my diet. Get use to," I said, chuckling as I took a sip of it. "I'm thirsty. I haven't had any in awhile."
"Alright, fine. If you say so," Jacob said, followed by a chuckle. I smiled at him as I then began to take a bite out of my sandwich. It was a really nice day in the city today. Not too cold and not to hot. It was perfect fall weather.
I know the others were busy today. Lily was suppose to go out with her mom; Masen and Ethan were hanging out; Aidan, Seth, and Lizzy were going to go exploring somewhere; and then everyone was playing with Abby.
Abby's made a cute little addition to the family since she's joined. Even though it's been a day or two, she's got Uncle Jazz, Alice Alice, and the rest of the family wrapped around her tiny little fingers. She has the Cullen girl charm, that's for sure.
We're still unsure if she has a power. She grows pretty fast too. She only joined the Cullen family two days ago and she's already grown a couple of inches. It's kind of scary, seeing her grow this fast, but I think I know how my parents felt. No wonder they were so scared when I would grow a couple of inches.
"So...How's school?" Jacob asked me, looking out at the pond.
"It's good. Ya know, normal. I like it," I replied as I took a bite into my sandwich. "I feel like a normal kid. A normal human."
"I thought you liked being a half vamp kid?" He asked me, his face slightly amused.
"I do Jake, it's just every supernatural creature I know comes with some sort of drama or burden. Look what I've been through and I'm only six. If I was human I should be going to the first grade and picking my nose or something mindless like that," I muttered.
Jacob chuckled hearing this, "You rather be picking your nose?"
"No...It's just somedays I wish I could have grown up a lot slower. I'm only six and I feel like I've grown up already," I told Jake as I looked down at a blade of grass.
"You haven't grown up yet," Jacob told me, taking my hand gently. "Your still young Ness, even I'm still young. You haven't been hit with the responsibility of some adults yet, me either. Trust me, your young and you still have a lot of growing up to do...I still have some growing up to do as well," Jacob told me, looking at me in the eyes.
"Thanks Jake...But I mean, I love being part vampire, it's just sometimes I wish life could be easier," I said to him as I watched the ducks swim across the pond.
"Not to ruin anything for you, but life isn't that easy," Jacob said to me.
"Thanks for the optimism." I chuckled. He chuckled as well as he laid down on the grass next to me.
"Well I don't know, I mean I think it gets easier...I think? I'm not that old like your dad, I'm not even as old as your mom. I'm only twenty three," Jake said.
"Oh yeah, I forget about that somedays since your so immature," I teased with him. Jacob just rolled his eyes at him and I giggled.
Jacob and I spent the majority of the day together on the lawn by the pond. We even played frisbee, kind of ironic, but it was nice fun. Something tells me we found our new spot together.
"Hey, I'll be right back. I need to go find a trash," I announced, getting up from my spot on the lawn and picking up our garbage.
"You want me to come with you?" Jacob asked me.
"Nah, I'm fine Jake. It's right by the bathroom. It's only a few feet away," I told him, motioning to the area with a jerk of my thumb.
"Alright, fine. Just be careful," He said to me.
"Jake. It's the trash. I'm not going to my doom," I responded as I walked away from him. I wish he didn't worry that much. I already have two parents for that. Why do I need Jacob as well to ask me every five minutes if I'm okay. I know they mean good, but I don't need to be babied by the them forever.
I sighed as I then tossed the trash into the bin. Maybe I'm being harsh but, it's true. I feel like I get babied half the time for everything I do.
I go to turn around to meet Jake, but that's when I felt a pair of arms grab me. I felt my heart stop as the hands came in contact with my body.
"Don't move and you won't get hurt," a voice bellowed, gripping to me. I froze as I then felt someone yank me away from broad day light.
"Get. Off. Of. Me!" I growled as I then kicked this person in their shin. This made them loosen the grip they had on me and I jumped away. I tried not to use anything vampire like since I knew I could expose us.
I looked to see the figure was dressed in all black. I couldn't even tell if it was a man or a women because I then started to run away. I was sure it was a women, but I could be wrong.
I kept on running. I knew Jacob was going to yell at me for this, but whatever. I can take care of myself anyway.
I kept on running past all the people until I was a good mile away from the area I was attacked.
As I rushed away, all of a sudden I bumped into someone, knocking them smack into the ground.
"Oh my god, sorry," I apologized to the person on the ground. I went to take a closer look to see it was none other than Grace Martin.
"Grace?" I questioned, looking at the girl in front of me.
"Oh, hi Nessie," She said, getting up slowly with the help of my hand. "Are you okay?"
"Me? I just rammed into you. I'm so sorry about that by the way," I told her.
"It's okay. I'm fine. You just caught me off guard," she said, chuckling. "Anyway, you seem shaken up. Is everything okay?" Grace asked me.
"Yeah, no I'm fine. Someone just um spooked me. They're gone now, I'm okay," I told her.
"Are you sure? Because if they tried to do anything to you I have my phone and I could call the police-"
"It's okay. I'm fine," I told her quickly. "It's okay."
"Alright, if you say so," she said softly, pausing for a bit. "Did you come here with anyone?"
"Um yeah. My friend, Jake," I told her, rubbing my head. "He's probably going to be all worried since he's all protective."
"Oh, is he like your brother?" she asked me.
I shrugged. "Nah, I mean...He was once before, but I've got Masen and Aidan now."
"Oh, okay," She said.
"What about you? Did you come here alone?" I asked her.
"Yeah. I came here to read," she said, pulling out a copy of the Notebook. "Nicholas Sparks is a guilty pleasure of mine."
"He is a good author. Not my favorite, but I know he's a favorite of Lily's. She loves all the romance and stuff in it," I told her.
"I guess that's why I like it. What about you? Your favorite type of book?" she asked me.
"Um probably classical literature. I love Jane Austen, Shakespeare, the Brontë sisters, Dickens. People like that," I admitted to her. "Kind of boring, I know. But, I get it from my mother."
"No, it's not. They are all great authors," Grace said, agreeing with me. "How do you feel about poetry?"
"When I was a kid I loved it, my mom use to read me poems at night. Robert Frost is one of my favorites," I said to her.
"Oh my gosh, I love him, and Emily Dickens. I remember I memorized Fire and Ice in the sixth grade. Robert, my brother, made fun of me for it for days..." she trailed off at the name of Robert. So that's her brother, Robert.
"Oh, Masen makes fun of me all the time for reading Shakespeare. If it makes you feel better, you're not the only one who got teased by her brother. He personally does not like Shakespeare's work anyway. Lizzy, my um da-brother in law's sister likes him too. But Masen's like my dad, he isn't a fan of Shakespeare. Masen is basically a mini me of my dad," I told her, chuckling.
Grace laughed. "Oh really? That's kind of funny. You know, my brother was always like my dad. He-"
"Ness!" I looked to see Jacob running up to me. "There you are, I've been worried sick. Where have you..." He trailed off when he noticed Grace.
"Um Jake, this is Grace. Grace, this is my friend Jacob. We've been friends since we were kids. In fact him and my sister grew up together," I told her, motioning to him.
"Oh, hi Jacob. Nice to meet you," Grace said, shaking the outstretched hand he gave her. "I should go anyway. My mom's probably wondering where I am. I told her I'd be home a half hour ago."
"Alright. See you at school Grace," I said, waving goodbye at her.
"You too Nessie," she said. "See you guys around."
"See you!" Jake and I called out. When it was just the two of us Jacob looked at me.
"Why didn't you tell me you would be gallivanting around the park. I get worried Ness," He said to me.
"I know you do, but may I remind you, I am not a baby anymore. Anyway, I ran into Grace and we um got talking," I said, skipping the part where I was attacked. I don't need Jake to know about that. He'd freak out and do something drastic like going full wolf out of anger.
"I know your lying about something Nessie. It isn't like you to run off like that anyway," He said.
I sighed. "Fine...I was...I was running from someone," I muttered, scratching the back of my head.
"You were running from who exactly?" Jacob asked slowly.
"It's nothing Jake, let's just go back to what we were doing before. I don't want to talk about it," I replied sharply. "I took care of it, it's done. I don't need you to phase in the middle of central park over something that is probably a simple mugging..."
"What. Happened. Ness?" Jacob asked, gritted through his teeth.
"Someone grabbed me...I think it was a women, I couldn't tell, but they told me not to move and I kicked them and ran. I ran until I came across Grace, and from there we just started to talk," I mumbled, rubbing my arm. "I'm fine Jake. I got away, I'm perfectly fine now."
"Ness, what if they had a weapon on or what if they were dangerous? Just don't shrug it off, this could mean danger!" Jacob blew up, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "I knew moving to a city would be a bad idea. Nothing but trouble."
"Jake, I'm not a little kid anymore. Sure I'm not an adult, but I can take care of myself! Plus, may I remind you, I'm half vampire!" I snapped at him. I paused for a few minutes before I sighed, "Why are you acting like this. It's done. I took care of it."
"Ness, I act like this because I care about you. Your safety is the most important thing in the world for me," Jacob told me softly. "You have to understand that."
"I do. It's just I can take care of myself. I hate being babied," I responded quietly. "I hate it."
"I'm not babying you. Ness, I just want to protect you. Ever since I laid eyes on you it's been my job to protect you," Jacob told me softly.
"I know, and I'm sorry," I muttered.
"Don't be sorry. Ness, I know how much you just want to grow up, but I just get concerned. That's all. Look, I'm glad your safe," He told me, reaching out for my hand.
"It's okay...Can we go home?" I asked him. He nodded as I went to wrap my arms around his warm neck.
I sighed as I burry my face into the crook of his neck. He then holds me tight to his body as I just hold to him. My Jacob. It has a nice ring to it you know...
I shook the thought out of my head as Jacob takes my hand and we walk back to the house. I know my parents are going to freak when they find out about this. I mean, what parent doesn't, but if you've met my vampire parents they get protective about everything.
When we reached the house, I was screwed anyway. Aunt Alice apparently had a vision of me kicking on the asshole's shin. I turned to my parents to see them steaming mad. If they weren't vampires, their faces would be red with anger right now.
"Am I in trouble?" I asked meekly as I looked at my parents. "I'm sorry I didn't say anything, but I thought I could handle it myself and..."
"Renesmee, we aren't mad at you. We're just scared, that's all," My mom told me gently as she took my hands in hers. "We just get nervous. That's all."
"I know. I'm sorry, just don't be mad," I said, gripping tight to her hands. I then brought my mom into a hug. "I'm going to be fine. I promise."
"I know, angel. Just be careful. This city isn't 100% safe. No where ever is," My mom said softly.
I nodded my head as I go to hug my mother one more time. I hate seeing her so worried like this. I then looked at my dad who's eyes were black.
Daddy are you okay? I asked him via my mind. He nodded his head and once my mom was done he scooped me up in a hug.
"I'm going to call the police to tell them about what happened though," My grandfather announced from behind. "This could be a mugger and if we tell them we can prevent other victims hopefully."
"Alright," I said as I slowly let go of my father to be stuck in between both of my parents.
Later that night I headed to my window side as I looked out into the city. I wonder if the mugger was even a mugger, or was it someone from the Volturi? I couldn't be sure, but I got a little nervous. But that's probably my parents paranoia washing off on me. I mean, I am a danger magnet, I'm bound to attract a mugger. Now thinking back why do I feel like this all has some sort of connection.
"Ness?" I snapped around to see Masen. He was in the doorway, dressed in his plaid pajama bottoms and gray Gap sweatshirt.
"Yes?" I asked, slightly moody. "What's up?"
"I just came to check on you. I heard that you were mugged or something, and being the protective brother I am...I just wanted to check on you," He admitted, sheepishly. I smiled as I walked over to hug him.
"I'm fine Mas. It's just a mugger. You know, the city has them," I said nonchalantly.
"Yeah, I know. It's just your thoughts say something else," He said, tapping his head with a smirk. "You know I can hear these things Ness."
"I know...Dad didn't hear, or Lizzy?" I asked quietly. Masen shook his head as we both took a seat on my window bench.
"He's with mom. He's too busy thinking about her and Lizzy is asleep. It's just me, plus dad can't read it because I put a shield on your mind, so your welcome," He said. I chuckled as I nudged him playfully.
"Anyway, besides Jacob, I just wanted to tell you that I'm always going to be here to protect you and stuff," Masen muttered.
"Aw, looks like someone cares," I teased with him. He rolled his eyes as he goes to playfully nudge me.
"I know. Thanks. And I'm here for you too...Anyway, I'm going to sleep. Kind of a long day," I mumbled, sighing.
"Yeah. Rest up sis. See you in the morning," Masen said as he gave me a kiss on the cheek before heading away. I smiled as I leant against my window frame. Life really has his ups and downs, doesn't it.
