The Doctor took one last gulp of refreshing water and rummaged around the cargo. He found a blue bandana pretty quickly, and pressed it against his mouth. It was no mask, but it would at least be some form of protection against the awful smog. He knelt and opened the latch below him, thanking the random driver with a smile on his face before dropping into the smog below.

"He's a madman!" the driver said to himself.

The Doctor landed on the vehicle directly below him with a loud thunk. There was nothing in sight save for car lights and fumes.

"Wally! Eva!" he called out.

Nothing. On to the next car.

In the depths below, Eva landed on top of an unknown dark brown surface. It felt rough and sturdy, but it moved up and down quite a bit. She groaned in pain as she stood up, and noticed the difficulty she had in breathing. There were other things on her mind, however. In the distance she saw sparks clashing with a red beam of heat. It had to be Wally and that…thing.

Wally punched the being, but barely managed to dent it. Whatever it was, it was strong. It grabbed him by the arm and crushed it right in the middle. Wally screamed in pain. The being did not stop. It grabbed him by both broken arm and his leg, lifted him over its head, and threw him onto the same surface as Eva, with such force that he dented the surface.

Only a second after impact, the surface began to rumble and roar in pain. Eva ran to Wally, who was not moving.

"Wally?!"

"I-I'm okay." He said, slowly sitting up.

The rumbling started again. It was followed by another roar. Wally rotated his unbroken arm to dispel the smog and buy themselves some more breathing time. Both of them took a moment to breathe in the air.

"Hey Eva?" said Wally, grabbing his broken arm. "Can you uh, distract that thing for a bit?"

"Wha-?"

SLAM!

The being crashed its entire body weight directly onto her, knocking the wind out of her and slamming her into the surface. The impact caused another rumble followed by yet another roar. The surface began to rise as it dawned on Eva. This thing they have been fighting on was alive. It was a creature, and now it was very, very angry. The creature thrashed about in a frenzy, sending all three of them flying. Eva grabbed Wally and landed on top of another one of the creatures.

"Oh great. There's more." She said, finding it harder to breathe again.

The creatures were a dark brown color, and had glowing eyes. They were gigantic in size, and had large crab-like pincers.

"Giant…crabs?" said Wally, raising an eyebrow.

"Yep." He said. "We're outta here."

The creatures thrashed again, snapping their pincers trying to catch them as they were flung into the air.

Eva landed on top of a giant pincer and ran for the edge.

"Eva, can you fly?" asked Wally.

"Can I what?!" she exclaimed in disbelief.

"Oh boy. –cough-"

The pincer snapped, but Eva jumped and landed right back on top of it.

"That's it!" said Wally, still holding on to Eva.

"What is?" she asked, coughing.

They had reached the tip of one of the giant crustacean's mighty pincers. It snapped again, but again Eva had timed her jump to avoid the deadly foe and land right back on top again.

"Jump, Eva!" Wally shouted. "Jump as high as you possibly can!"

"What?!"

"Just do it!"

Eva mustered up her courage, and crouched, preparing for the greatest leap in her life. At this point, they were surrounded by the dreadful crustacean giants. Just as another one of them opened its mighty claws to crush them, she leapt with all of her strength, high into the air, almost as if she really were flying. The creatures could not hope to catch them now. Just as quickly as she landed on top of another giant crab, she leapt again. This time she went even higher! This time, she broke through the layer of giant crabs and found the motor vehicles that they had seen before.

As she began her descent, she shifted Wally to her right arm and stretched out her left arm. Her hand clawed into the side of a floating car. At last, they were free from whatever it was that hunted them below. Wally climbed over Eva, and onto the top of the car. After Eva climbed up, he opened a latch and the two landed inside the vehicle. Finally, they could breathe.

"Oi!" shouted the driver, a blue man.

"What?" said Eva, coughing out the smog and inhaling the cleaner air.

"I said 'Oi!' as in, "What are you doing in my car?!"

"We're looking for someone." Said Wally, getting a drink from the water jug that was right next to the passenger's seat.

"Well if it's that trench coat-wearing fellow, he's gone! He went below to the other cars. And you know what else?!"

"What's that?" asked Eva.

"I don't think he's an inspector!"

"Um." Said Wally. "We'll uh, keep that in mind sir."

That said and done, Wally found the next hatch and dropped with Eva to the car below.

Meanwhile the Doctor heard the roaring and thrashing below him. At this point, he had joined a car that was occupied by a black cat couple.

"What was that noise?" he asked the driver, a young female.

She gulped in terror. Her eyes began to well up with tears. Her husband placed his hand onto hers for comfort.

"It's nothing." He growled at the Doctor. "Just the ventilation shafts."

"Of course it is." Said the Doctor as he made his way toward the front of the car, where there was a screen with controls and a radio. He pulled out his sonic screwdriver and sent pulses into the system. As the sonic made a whirling noise, air blew from the car and cleared the smog below. The Doctor then ran for the hatch on the floor and opened it. There he saw them as he looked below.

"The Macra." He said to himself.

"What?" asked the cat lady.

"Those weren't the shafts. They're the Macra."

"What is that?" asked the husband.

"At one point they had their own empire, using humans as slaves and gas for food."

The Doctor put away his screwdriver, staring down at the creatures roaring below.

"But now, it looks like they're just devolved beasts."

Where to go now? He was already just above the fast lane. One more jump below and he would risk falling into the claws of the Macra.

THUD!

A dent appeared on the ceiling.

"Pirates!" shouted the cats.

The hatch opened, and in fell Eva and Wally. The Doctor could barely contain his relief that they were all right. He grabbed the both of them and raised them to their feet before hugging them in excitement.

"Eva! Wally! You're okay!" he exclaimed.

"Ah! Aahh! Arm!" yelped Wally. "Arm, Doctor!"

The Doctor released them and pulled out his screwdriver to examine Wally.

"What happened down there?" he asked.

"We were attacked by some really strong person, couldn't get a good look at him though."

Eva bounced on her feet in excitement. "I leapt really high, Doctor! Like almost flying!"

"Oh." Said Wally. "And we were attacked by giant crabs. Luckily I only suffered a broken arm and Eva jumped us outta there."

The Doctor blinked. "What?"

"She jumped us out of there."

"She…jumped from below the fast lane, and onto here?"

Wally nodded.

"What?!" the Doctor exclaimed again.

"Impossible." Said the wife cat lady. "That's over 1,000 feet."

CLANG!

"Oh what now?!" yelled the husband cat.

From the side of the car was a fist-shaped indent. Something was breaking through. Another clang shook the car and pushed the indention further into the wall.

"Get back, everyone!" yelled the Doctor.

He motioned everyone to move to the opposite side of the car. They scurried and faced their impending intruder with their backs to the wall.

"What is it?!" screamed the cat lady, clinging to her husband.

With one more forceful punch, a metal fist broke through and ripped a hole in the wall. The air blew out and, for a brief moment, revealed the form of the being that had been pursuing them all this time. Stepping into the car and standing before them was an all too familiar sight. It was a Cyberman, yet it differed from the others seen at Canary Wharf.

This one was much stronger, could fly, and fired heat from its eyes. On top of that, it was painted blue and red rather than silver.

Eva's jaw nearly dropped to the floor. "What the hell?" she uttered.

Its eyes began to glow red once again.

"That glow." Said the Doctor, amazed by this unique specimen. "That's what we saw. It was this Cyberman. But why?"

Wally grabbed the Doctor with both arms, now healed.

"Less talking, more moving!" he shouted.

He sped just inches away from the incoming blast of red heat, which melted the other side of the car. The two cat people screamed in terror and huddled together by the driver's seat. The strange Cyberman did not seem interested in them, and fixed its gaze on Eva.

"What do you want?!" Eva screamed at it.

It didn't answer her. Instead it tried to grab her, but Eva caught its reaching hand and with a mighty shout, she started pulling at it with all of her strength. Everyone could hear the sound of electricity cackling inside the cybernetic being. Angry that she had not the strength to dismember the creature, Eva crouched and unleashed a powerful uppercut that sent the Cyberman soaring upwards. A repeated crashing noise in the distance filled the Doctor with both anger and horror. Her punch had sent the Cyberman upwards through the cars, and the screams that they all were hearing confirmed the Doctor's fears.

"Those people!" yelled the Doctor, furious. "It's crashing into all those people! Don't you get it Eva?! You're hurting them! They're innocent!"

Eva's eyes filled with tears of regret. "I- I didn't mean to."

Wally's face was downcast. Her punch sent the Cyberman through the cars, and the innocent passengers inside.

The Cyberman flew back down for another chance at Eva. It swung at her with its powerful fists, creating a gust of wind with it. Eva ducked and delivered another uppercut. As it flew upward, she leapt high into the air, grabbing the Cyberman and bouncing up the levels of the motorway from car to car. This way, she ensured that no one else would get hurt.

Below, the car that held the Doctor, Wally and the cat people had been all but destroyed. The air kept blowing, but the smog would soon overpower the air. Wally used his arms to create a wind that would keep the poisonous gas at bay. The Doctor noticed that Wally's arm was now perfectly healed.

Wally sensed the Doctor's curiosity and smiled at him.

"Speed Force!" he said.

The Doctor nodded.

Suddenly another cat lady dropped from the hole in the car above them, and landed in front of the Doctor. She was dressed similar to a nurse or nun, and carried a rifle with her.

"You are a hard man to find, Doctor!" said the cat lady.

"Seriously?!" yelled the cat husband, exasperated at yet another intrusion.

"Wait, who are you?" he asked, confused.

"Doctor, it's me. Novice Hame." She said, her head bowed.

"Get away from me!" exclaimed the Doctor. "I remember the last time I met you! You were using humans for experimentation!"

"Doctor." Said Novice Hame, solemnly. "I understand that I have been a part of, and have committed unspeakable sins."

"Understatement of the century." He interjected.

"But-" she continued anyway. "I have sought forgiveness for all of these years, under his guidance. In my darkest hour, at my lowest point, he saw me….and forgave me."

Wally tilted his head, unsure of whether or not he was hearing a conversation or a church sermon.

"He gave me a new purpose-"said Novice Hame, with a smile on her face. "- and the chance to redeem myself. And now Doctor, he wants to meet you."

Without another word, she activated her teleporter and grabbed the Doctor by the wrist.

"No! Don't you dare!" he yelled in alarm.

"Doc!" exclaimed Wally as he grabbed onto him.

In an instant, all three of them were gone.

Meanwhile, Eva continued leaping upward with the Cyberman, until they crashed through a metal dome. She released the Cyberman, which began its freefall down to the metal surface. Eva could hardly believe it. All those thousands, possibly millions of people. They had all been sealed off. They were trapped. The Cyberman landed on top of the dome shaped seal, and fired another blast of heat at its target. Eva, who was descending at this point, could not dodge the incoming blast. Wasting not even a millisecond, she crossed her arms over her chest, and braced for the inevitable.

The blast of heat burned her arms like fire burns a human being. She screamed in pain as she crashed into the dome surface. The Cyberman rushed to her and prepared to stomp on her head, but Eva swept her legs and knocked it off of its feet. She jumped and slammed her elbow into its chest. It did nothing more than a dent.

Novice Hame, The Doctor and Wally suddenly reappeared inside of a dark, abandoned structure. Wally staggered to regain his balance from such a rough teleportation, while the Doctor glanced around.

"Where are we?" he asked. "Where did you take us?!"

"To the over-city." Novice Hame replied. "This is the Senate."

"Oh good." Said the Doctor. "Now I get to tell them that they've trapped all these innocent people with poison gas and Macra!"

"But Doctor." She said sorrowfully. "They're all dead."

She clicked a button on her teleporter, located on her wrist. The lights of the room were turned on, and the Doctor saw that there was nothing but ruins and human remains. There were skeletons, wires and ruin everywhere. A large crack in the wall revealed to Wally and the Doctor that they had been sealed off from the rest of the world. All of those motorists had been driving in vain. There was no way out.

"What happened?" asked Wally.

"A deadly virus, from a new drug." She answered.

Looking down at the skeleton just beside his yellow boots, Wally saw it. It was a clear sticker that said, "Bliss".

"This virus, it killed everything then?" asked the Doctor.

Novice Hame answered him. "Yes. But the Senate sealed off the undercity. We survived."

"Wait a minute." Said the Doctor. "Who's 'we'?"

Almost as soon as the words left his mouth, an old and frail voice called out to him.

"Doctor."

Instantly, he knew who it was.

"The Face of Boe!"

Without hesitation, the Doctor ran towards him. He had wired himself into what looked to be the mainframe of something. As much as the Doctor was overjoyed to see his old friend again, he could not mistake that labored breathing or weak voice. His friend, the immortal Face of Boe, was dying.

"Oh no…" The Doctor's heart sank.

"Doctor…" said his old friend. "There is not much time. I wired myself into the mainframe…"

His voice began to trail off as he started to struggle breathing.

"The virus killed everyone." Said Novice Hame. "I only survived because he protected me with his smoke. If it were not for him giving his own life energy, the undercity would be without power and fall into the sea."

"So then," said Wally. "Those people were actually saved by being trapped by that metal seal out there."

Novice Hame nodded.

"But-" the Doctor reasoned. "There are other planets out there. Why didn't you call for help?"

"Novice Hame." Said Wally, breaking the conversation. "How do we fix this?"

"Right." Said the Doctor. "I gotta take the residual energy, reverse it-"

"Great, you do all that. I'm gonna find Eva."

With a quick flash of red and yellow sparks, he was gone.

"So it's true…" said the Face of Boe. "Time is being rewritten."
