Weeks passed and Meredith had stopped visiting Derek, she didn't even came for rounds anymore. After another week the play dates with Lily in the evenings had stopped as well and Derek felt simply lonely.
Addison was still in New York and he would be discharged in about two weeks. She said she had to do some research for a project but Derek assumed she was with Dr. Cooper. If that was the case he finally had a reason to divorce her because although the daily life as a patient in a hospital was boring as hell if Addison would be here he'd probably be dead by now. Addison was just one of the most annoying human beings on this planet and Derek was wondering how he survived almost 15 years of marriage with her.
2 weeks later
Monday morning... Meredith groaned as her alarm clock woke her up with a loud frantic beeping. She pushed the clock from her nightstand and it hit the ground with a loud thumb. She was pretty sure she broke it. The third this month already. Only seconds after the tragic death of her alarm clock a little bundle of energy jumped on her bed and began to poke her.
Meredith took Lily by her hands and began tickling her.
"Stoooppp... mommy!" Lily shrieked and laughed. Meredith joined the laughter of her daughter.
"How did you sleep pumpkin, Any bad dreams?" She asked since Lily had some bad nightmares lately.
"Noooo, at first I thought I'd have one but then I just imagined the monster in underwear, just how uncle Derek told me and then I dreamed of princesses." Lily smiled.
"Sounds great honey!" Meredith pressed a kiss to her daughters cheek.
"Ewww," Lily wiped her cheek with the back of her hand. Meredith chuckled at the silliness of her four year old daughter.
"Oh, mommy! Why are we not visiting uncle Derek anymore?" At the thought of Derek Meredith's stomach turned upside down.
The big secret was still not out.
Meredith smiled a sad smile. "Well... that's a long story I'll tell you another day, okay?"
"Okay..." Lily looked disappointed.
"Hey Cristina, how are you today?" Meredith grinned as she approached her friend.
"Whoa, who are you and what have you done with Meredith?" Cristina looked confused at Meredith and put her hand onto her forehead, "are you sick or is there a reason why you are so happy?"
"No, better! Derek is getting discharged today and I am finally free."
Cristina raised an eyebrow, "free? Meredith as long as you don't tell him, you'll never be free. You'll always carry that secret with you and it'll break you one day."
"Okay, now I am the one to be worried. Are you okay?" Meredith laughed.
"Okay everybody, listen up," Bailey came into the residents locker room. "in a few months from now you are taking your final exams which not only means I don't have to listen to all the crap and personal issues of you guys anymore but somehow you made it and you are becoming attendings. So that means from now on no more surgeries for you and learning, learning, learning." She announced.
"What?!" Christina's Eyes widened. "No. More. Surgeries. Mer, do you know what that means?" She asked her friend who looked just as shocked as Cristina.
"That means," Bailey interrupted, "that you are responsible for rounds and everything outside of the OR and since I've known you for a few years already I am going to decide who gets which patient so there are going to be no fights or complaints about patients, am I clear?"
"Ugh, I want to cut!" Cristina whined.
"Hmm, me too." Meredith answered.
"So, rounds everybody. O'Malley, Kepner, Hunt is waiting for you in the ER, Karev, You're with Robbins, Stevens, you're assigned to Webber, Cristina Teddy is also in the ER and Avery you're with Sloan." Bailey told the group.
„Dr. Bailey, you forgot me." Meredith looked confused at her superior. „Oh, right. Grey, Sydney Herron asked for you. You're supposed to meet her at room 2604." Meredith gulped, Dereks room...
„Ahhhh Meredith, have you heard the good news? Dr. Shepherd is getting discharged and since you were assigned to him for his whole stay I figured you could also discharge him and do the last check up."
„Yaayy," Meredith faked a smile. That was the last thing she wanted to do. This day would going to be a ride through hell.
Before entering the room Meredith closed her eyes and recalled a few happy moments of Lily and her in her head to calm her down but since Lily is also Dereks daughter and she didn't tell him it made her even more nervous than she already was.
Derek was placing his his last piece of clothing from the hospital drawer into his suitcase. Today he finally got discharged. He was playing with the thought of saying goodbye to Meredith but she didn't want to see or be near him. Plus she would be mad at him forever if she would find out the news about the little surprise he had planned.
A knock threw him out of his thoughts. That's it. he would finally get discharged. Richard came earlier to say goodbye and to talk about a few important things but now he finally could leave the hospital.
Breathe, Meredith, breathe
Meredith knocked on the wooden door of Dereks room and waited patiently outside.
„Come in," a voice said and Meredith entered the room.
On the bed was a big black suitcase with lots of neatly folded clothes. Derek was sitting in an armchair, reading a medical journal. Instead of the hospital gown he wore a wool pullover with some jeans. His expression changed into a smile when he saw Meredith standing in the doorframe with a chart in her hand and a stethoscope hanging around her neck.
"Good Morning, dr. Shepherd, I am here to do your last check up and to discharge you." She tried to act as professional as possible.
"Oh, yeah right, the check up, I forgot. I don't have the hospital gown anymore should I-" Meredith interrupted him as he was starting to ramble.
"No, it's okay just take off your... uhm... your shirt."
He ran a hand trough is dark curls. "Okay," slowly he lifted up his shirt and revealed his upper body. He had a light six pack and quite muscular arms.
Meredith hat to pull herself together not to stare.
She took her stethoscope and pressed the round end against Dereks chest. A steady heartbeat. She remembered the many times she'd been laying on his chest listening to his heartbeat. He would slowly run a hand through her blonde curls and press soft kisses on the top of her hair.
As she looked up her eyes met his and they were just inches apart. Meredith was lost in his ocean blue eyes. It was as if a magnet slowly pulled them together.
"As their lips almost met she whispered, "You have a wife."
"But she isn't here, you are," He put a hand under her chin and stroked her cheek with his thumb.
Their foreheads met and Meredith closed her eyes.
"I miss you," He spoke.
A tear rolled down Merediths cheek, "I can't..."
She turned away from him and left the room.
Meredith still isn't giving in but she will eventually don't worry! As I was reading this through I actually realized how terrible some of this stuff is lmao. I've written this about two years ago (Fetus 14 year old me) and I had absolutely no idea how to write a story. Anyway I still seemed to have done something right bc some of you actually like this and I am really grateful for this. So thank you!
Spring break's over and school starts in 8 hours. Imma go die now byeeee
