AN: Wow! Two in one go! Aren't you proud of me? I had nothing to do on the plane, so here is an extra fluffy filler chapter. Sorry that it is so short. :S

Chapter 9: Realizations

When Spock woke up he registered that his mind was in a state of extreme unrest. Vulcans were not supposed to have nightmares, and yet how else would he classify the dream he had just had. Jim had died in front of Spock's eyes, and he couldn't do anything to save him. It had been so real, that Spock had almost believed it to be real. He decided to meditate to calm down his emotions. He still had another 12 hours before his next shift started and so he took his time setting up for meditation. Once it was set to his standards he started. He focused on the Enterprise as his central point and began reigning in his emotions. First was the fear that he had during his dream. It was illogical to fear it, as it hadn't happened, even though there had been a situation extremely similar to it that Spock had encountered. He brought forward the memory.

Four missions ago…

Spock was waiting for the Captain to beam down. When they had first received this mission, Spock had convinced him that he should go down first with a security team to make sure that the planet was safe. While their scans said that there were no harmful animals or plants, they had been wrong before. After Spock had gathered as much data as he deemed necessary, however, he allowed the Captain to beam down with them, providing that Doctor McCoy came as well.

"Spock!" the Captain said excitedly, glancing around. "What have you discovered so far?"

"Not much, sir, but I have concluded that there are no…" Spock was interrupted by the scream of a security ensign.

"Everybody get down!" They all fell to the ground, as the ensign shot a phaser just above their heads. Spock looked up to see a giant being that seemed to be half bear and half lion. It had come careening down the slope behind them and had begun creeping up on the Captain. The phaser did nothing except make it angrier.

"I thought you said this planet was safe, Spock," The captain said as the lion-bear turned on the ensign that had shot the creature. It was about to pounce when the Captain yelled "Oh no you don't, and jumped on its back. It roared and tried to fling him off, but Kirk was holding on for dear life.

"Enterprise, six to beam up," Spock shouted into his communicator just as the creature got Jim off its back. The thing had started to attack the Captain, who had lost his phase in the battle, and was subsequently trying to defend himself with a branch he had found.

"Now Mr. Scott," Spock shouted again, as Jim's branch broke. The creature jumped on top of him and started clawing at his chest. The Captain rolled away tried to stand. He was covered in scratches and bite marks as the familiar sensation of transportation engulfed them. When they were back on the ship, the Captain looked around and ascertained that everyone was okay, before collapsing. McCoy managed to save him, but as it was, the Captain had to rehabilitate himself for another two week.

Back in the present…

Spock opened his eyes to the interior of his room. The only thing that this meditation had brought him was desolation. Because he had realized that he was irrevocably and unequivocally in love with James T. Kirk, who could never ever love him back.
