Chapter 9

Flashback

A few days later, a small crowd was heading towards the hook cemetery, with Lord Death, Death the Kid, and Marceline leading them. The crowd was wearing black and some had tears in their eyes. When they started to bury the coffin, whispers flew around them.

"I wonder what happened?"

"I heard that those three children ran into a witch a few nights ago."

"Poor Marshall. Those three never had a chance."

"Mess with a witch and look where you'll end up."

Marceline grabbed her brother's hand. "Why won't they stop?" She asked. "We didn't mean to."

"Ignore them Marci." Kid replied, not taking his eyes off of the tombstone. His bangs shielded his eyes as a tear rolled down his face. "They never saw the horror of having their brother die in front of them." They both gazed at the whispering crowd.

The sun started to set in the sky. Kid and Marceline were sitting on the ground, still staring at Marshall Lee's grave. "I want him back." Marceline said with tears in her eyes. "It's my fault." Kid turned to her. "No it's not."

"Yes it is!" She shouted at him. She whipped her head towards him, tears rolling down her face. "I should have died! It should have been me instead of him!" She was about to continue until she was cut off with a slap by her brother. She slowly turned to him before he pulled her into a hug. "Don't talk about that suicide crap!" He yelled. "I don't wanna hear that from you!"

Tears kept rolling down his face. "Please." He begged while tightening his grip. "I can't lose you too." Tears rolled down the girl's face as she hugged him back. "I can't bear to think about it." She muttered. "Don't die, Kid. Please?" He nodded.

"And that's what happened." Marceline finished. The group of girls stared as the female Reaper took a breath and leaned back. "I'm surprised it's been six years." She said. "It feels like yesterday." Kid held her hand. "You see, we don't like to talk about it." He said.

"I didn't know it would be that tough." Maka replied while looking down. "Should we tell Soul and Blackstar?"

"Do you want to?"

The next morning, most of the students that attend Death Weapon Meister Academy actually showed up. The two Reaper siblings saw their friends and walked away. "What's up with them?" Blackstar asked as he raised an eyebrow.

"No idea."

Maka, along with the others, raced their way to the Death Room to ask Lord Death what was wrong with his children. They had an idea that he would know. "Kid and Marceline are ignoring everyone?" He asked after they explained. "Hmm."

"Something wrong?" Tsubaki asked.

"So it's that time of year huh."

"What do you mean?" Liz asked. Lord Death turned to the group. "It's around the time when their brother died. It's kinda been a custom to avoid everyone until the time has passed."

"Even us?" Soul asked. Lord Death nodded. "Those two will turn back to normal soon." He said.

The group walked out of the Death Room and Lord Death turned back to his mirror. "I wonder where you are Marshall." He muttered to himself.

The next day, Kid and Marceline were heading to the graveyard, with the others on their tails. "I feel like I've been here before." Maka said as they followed the two through a passage.

"Why do you say that?" Liz asked. Maka shrugged. "It's just a feeling." They followed the two through a dark tunnel that seemed to last forever. Light blinded them when they exited and were amazed to see a small green field. "Hey look." Patty pointed to the top of a hill where the crew saw Marceline and Kid staring at a tombstone. Marceline bent down and gently placed a small, black rose on the grave, and smiled. "Happy Birthday, Marshall. I hope you enjoy it."

"You need some time alone?" Kid asked. He was about to walk away until Marceline tugged on his pants. "Stay with me. Please Kid?" Kid nodded.

"How dare those two keep this secret place from me." Blackstar muttered angrily, telling everyone that he was about to run out and yell at them. "Blackstar do-" Tsubaki was cut off by him running out there and yelling "HOW DARE YOU KEEP THIS PLACE FROM ME!"

"That jackass." Soul muttered while facepalming. Marceline and Kid turned around and dodged the punch Blackstar threw at them. Kid went behind him and knocked him to the floor. "What the hell Kid!" He yelled. "What was that for!?"

"Why don't you tell me what you're doing here!?" Blackstar threw another punch and Kid, with bangs shielding his eyes, caught it with his hand. He looked up an gave the bluenette a glare, that made him uncurl his fist and step back. "Whoa he's serious."

"Gee you just noticed that?" Liz asked as she rose an eyebrow. Marceline turned to them. "Why are you here?" She asked, not breaking her gaze from the ground. Maka stepped forward. "Well, we noticed that you two were avoiding everyone, so we were wondering why."

"So you asked Daddy?"

"That kinda sums it up." Soul replied. Marceline turned back to the grave. "Now you know. You remember this place right Maka?"

"Uh no I don't." Maka raised an eyebrow. Marceline gave a small smile. "Figures." She stated. "When we were younger, I remember seeing you at Marshall's funeral, and then you tried to cheer up me and Kid the next day."

"I was there?" Maka asked. Kid nodded. "A lot's happened since then."

"Now that I think about it." Maka said. "Papa did take me to a funeral when I was younger, but I forgot whose it was."

The group stayed at the grave until sunset. "We better get going." Maka said as she started to make her way back to the secret passage. She turned to the Reapers. "You guys need to be alone?" She asked.

"Yeah." Marceline said.

"Sure." Tsubaki replied as she pulled Blackstar back home. Liz and Maka followed while dragging Soul and Patty. "Do you think we'll see Marshall again?" Marceline asked her brother. He shrugged before staring at the sky. "I don't know." He replied. "But I have a feeling that we will." Marceline held his hand.

"Marci?"

"I'm scared." She replied. "I don't know why, but I'm scared." Kid squeezed her hand. "It'll be alright." He said. "Remember, I'm here for you. Don't forget that okay?" The female Reaper hugged his arm and nodded.

Me: Sorry it took me a while to update. I was trying to figure out how to end this chapter. That and it's hard for me to keep track of each story's plot. So until next time, stay tuned. ^_^
