Chapter nine

The school was quiet. They'd had minimal resistance from the students regarding bed times and only a few students were still awake. Logan had brought Kari back not long after the discussion in the Professor's office. It had taken a bit more persuading then normal to get Kari to go to bed, but she was now happily curled up in the room Sherlock had been in, though Sherlock suspected she wasn't asleep just yet. When Sherlock wondered into the kitchen Logan was there with Bobby.

Bobby had been in the last danger room session and Sherlock had been informed by Storm to keep an eye on him with John and Rogue. She'd been told about the disagreement at the museum.

"You look bored." Bobby said.

Sherlock shook her head "Not really. Just enjoying being back here."

And then she heard it.

Sherlock heard it before Logan did. As Bobby opened his mouth to talk she hushed him. Then Logan heard it. He froze with the soda bottle half way to his lips. He looked at Sherlock. Bobby thought her saw her give him the faintest of nods. She grabbed Bobby and pulled him out of the chair he was sat in and slammed him against a wall out of sight of the door. A man in a combat uniform walked into the kitchen, gun raised. It took Sherlock a matter of seconds to sneak up behind him and break his neck.

Upstairs a girl screamed.

The school erupted with sound and frantic actions. Logan and Sherlock ran into the hall. Sherlock ran up the stairs while Logan scooped up a fallen child and ushered students towards an exit. As she reached the top of the stairs Kari ran into her.

"Mom, what's going on?"

"Kari you need to get out of here now. If I remember rightly there's a secret passage." She pulled Kari down the stairs and into a crowd of frightened students. She somehow managed to herd them down a corridor. She didn't see Logan anywhere, but he was fully capable of taking care of himself.

She slammed her fist into a wall and a wooden panel slid away to reveal a tunnel.

"Everyone go," she shouted "Kari you go as well," she said as Kari hung back "Get to Hank's. Get everyone there. You'll be safe."

She left the students piling into the passageway and went to find Logan. When she reached the entrance hall tear gas stung her eyes. Through the haze of gas and smoke she saw Rogue, Bobby and John trying to feel their way to an exit. A shadow loomed behind them. But the shadow had been seen from the landing above by Logan, who leapt over the banister to protect them.

Sherlock started towards them but as a door was blown out behind them she was knocked to the ground and the lungful of smoke and tear gas made her choke. Logan pulled her to her feet and along a corridor toward the tunnel.

Logan pushed Rogue, Bobby and John into the tunnel, slapped Sherlock on the back as she spluttered and coughed before pushing her through as well.

As he went to follow them a deep voice made him look round.

"Wolverine." A man walked out of the smoke towards him. Logan froze.

Halfway down the tunnel Sherlock turned back and called "Logan!"

Rogue, Bobby and John stopped running and turned back towards Sherlock.

Back in the hall, Logan was still fixed to the spot. But in the blink of an eye a thick wall of ice built itself in front of him. He turned to see Bobby's hand pressed against the wall and all four of them were peering round at him.

"You go, I'll be fine." He shouted.

"But we won't." Rogue shouted back. For a moment it didn't look like Logan was going to move. But he turned on his heels and ran to them. As they closed the passageway the ice wall shattered.

They ran to the nearest car, which Sherlock recognised as the car Kari's dad usually drove. She wondered why he'd left it behind. She climbed into the driver's seat, swore loudly then adjusted the seat to fit her tall frame. She slammed her foot on the accelerator before anyone else had a chance to put their seat belt on. For several minutes they drove in silence. Sherlock could only think about getting them away from the school. She listened to the sound of her heart thumping against her rib cage until she couldn't bear the silence. She swallowed.

"Everyone ok?" she said quietly.

"We're fine. Are you ok?" Logan looked over at her. Even her silhouette looked worried.

"Yeah I'm fine." She said. No one was convinced.

"Where are we going?" Rogue asked.

"Jean and Storm are in Boston so we'll head that way."

"My parents live in Boston." Bobby said.

"Good. I can leave you three there then while we try and sort this out." Logan said.
