Chapter 8: Carter VS. Annabeth
Carter Kane was sitting in utopia until the guards came for him. He was beaming with pride, because his sister Sadie had managed to beat her opponent, Piper Mclean. He felt bad for the two other people in the room, Nico and Hazel who were both hugging and crying, but right now he was on top of the world. Then the door opened, and two guards stepped in. Silence echoed through the room. Nico and Hazel stopped crying, and stared at the guards. Cartert kill her. Walt and Amos were in the other corner, whispering and talking, but glee was written on their faces. Sadie had killed Piper. Annabeth felt awful. Reyna, Octavian, and now Piper were dead. Not one Egyptian had died. Annabeth knew they were too powerful to beat, and she was about to fight one. Carter Kane. The name echoed in her mind, again and again. Carter Kane. Percy had told her about their meeting and how they fought. Annabeth didnt have a chance. Percy was the most powerful person she knew. If Carter beat him, Annabeth was going to die very soon.
Carter felt himself being dragged towards what would be the arena, to fight Annabeth Chase, a Greek. He wondered what she could do, or if she had any special powers he should fear. Carter liked his odds though. If his annoying sister could beat a Greek, so could he.
Annabeth was practically trembling as the guards dragged her towards her death. She realized shet go into this battle as the underdog who was going to lose for sure. She would go in with her head held high, as the proud daughter of Athena. She would win this fight. She would win this fight.
Carter felt himself go airborne and land hard in a dark room. Was this the Arena? Why was he here? Carter stood still though, fearing the dark, and maybe the Greek hiding in its comforts. He sat there for a moment, the reality of what he was about to do settling in. He was about to slay another person down as if they were a monster. Stop their beating heart. Kill them off, with a stroke of his sword or a magic spell. Carter knew what he was about to do, would always be on his mind, and his heart. He had to carry on though. He had to kill Annabeth Chase, just for his own survival. With that in mind, he began to weep, just as Exodus screamed
Annabeth was shoved roughly into a dark room, and landed hard on a sandy floor. She glanced around the room, not knowing where she was. Was Carter Kane hiding among the darkness? Was this really the setting that they would fight in? These questions and more echoed in Annabetht want to leave Percy. She began to hyperventilate at the thought of it, just as Exodus screamed , and Annabeth found herself in a whole new setting.
Carter yelped at his surroundings. He was shocked to be in the library from the Brooklyn house. Why was he here? Was this the Arena that he was fighting in? Confused, he glanced around and began to creep up a row. He scanned the books on a shelf, and his eyes fell on one of the bindings. It said Exodus: The Story of his excellence. Confused, Carter glanced at the nexts Autobiography. Carter came to the realization that Exodus had probably conformed each book to his liking. Each book was probably filled with propaganda, so Carter didns stomach. The Egyptian boy could be anywhere, watching her, or hunting for her. She needed to get a move on. Clutching her dagger close to her body, she crept up an isle of books, looking for Carter Kane.
Carter stayed low to the ground as he crept towards the center of the library. From what he could tell, the center of the library led into 6 different aisles, so eventually the Greek girl would bound out of one of them. All Carter had to do now was wait.
Annabeth crept towards the center of the library, trepidation running through her veins like poison. She walked slowly out into the center, and spun around once. The Egyptian boy could come at her six different ways, since there were six aisles. Annabeth raised her dagger up and shouted . No one responded. Annabeth didnCOWARDI he replied back to her in an even tone. Annabeth smiled and said . The boy charged and Annabeth sent a prayer to her mother before meeting the boy in combat.
Carter had to admit, the girl was good. She met his strikes with an equally powerful strike of her own. In the beginning of the battle, no one had the upper hand. Carter met her dagger strikes with a sword strike of his own. Then it all changed. The girl started getting under his guard, cutting him with small blows now and then. The wounds began to pile up, until Carter could barely keep up with the lighting fast daughter of Athena. She was better than him, just like Percy was. What kind of training did the Greeks go through? Carter was getting more and more frustrated. None of his signature sword moves were working. She was deflecting strike after strike and using her own moves to get the upper hand. Carter felt more blood begin to soak out of the wounds he was accumulating. He wouldnt survive to see tomorrow.
Annabeth felt her confidence growing with dagger strike she inflicted on her opponent. He just couldnand thatt help but root for Annabeth. She was kicking Carters when it happened. Annabeth let her guard down for just a second and Carter appeared re-energized. He struck Annabeth right through the gut. She and Percy gasped in unison. Annabeth stumbled backwards, while Carter grasped consciousness like it was his lifeline. Both of them looked like they were on deatht fun Percy had to add. Annabetht die in the next ten seconds. He looked like a bloody mess, on the verge of death. His shirt was a weird bluish reddish color, blood mixing with a t shirt. Zia was scared for him. Annabeth looked just as awful. Zia prayed to the gods that Carter could come out of this battle alive. She didns arm. Carter was too weak to move in resistance, or yell in protest. In a flash, Annabeths neck, ready to slaughter Carter Kane.
Carter felt the cool blade of AnnabethFight Carter. Fight for Zia the love of your life. Fight for Sadie, Walt and Amos, your family and loved ones.s tears and yells. Again and again until Carter blacked out from the wounds he had suffered, emotionally and physically.
Percy felt tears prick his eyes. She was dead. The love of his life, the girl he had fought with since age 12 was gone. The girl he had held the sky for, the girl he went to Taurautus for was dead. Gone, like a snap of the fingers. Gone. Percy let out a horrible scream, like a wolf longing for his mate. He curled into a ball and closed his eyes, the world now a very dark place.
Zia was breathing heavily. Carter had survived, and she could live to see him again, as long as she survived her match. She breathed a sigh of relief and closed her eyes. Unlike Percy, she fell into a joyful sleep.
