Isabelle held Church to her chest as she made her way down the stairs. Alec toppled down behind her, steps loud on the hardwood. "I think I left my makeup in my room. Will you go get it for me please?" they reached a landing on the stairs and she spun around to face him. "Please Alexander?" He rolled his eyes at her because it annoyed him when she called him by his full name and that was the reason she did it. "Why do you even need it?" he asked pulling at the sleeves of his shirt so they would cover his hands completely. "I want to give Church a makeover." she said feeling the cat's claws start to dig into her arm. "Why?" "None of your business. Now go!" she ordered. He stalked back up the stairs. "And don't forget the glitter!"
She turned around and continued to descend the stairs. She stopped when she reached the last landing when she heard something. It sounded like crying. Like her mother. "It's my fault. He… He…" the words were barely audible and were swallowed up by the tears. "I… need him to stay… For them … H-he needs to stay for them… but I… I'm not sure he even cares." Isabelle sat on the steps and looked through the banister, her mother sitting on the floor with her face in her hands. Hodge was sitting across from her with his legs crossed and a hand on her shoulder. "He wouldn't do that he loves them. Alec and Isabelle… He loves you." Her mother shook her head, sobbing harder. "He doesn't. He blames me for t-the circle…. and the children...Y-you don't see the way he looks a… at Alec. he looks at him as if there's something wrong with him. Like he… I don't … and… Isabelle, Shes like me I guess… to fierce and already picking fights" Isabelle let Church go and stood up. The cat walked down the stairs and past her mother and Hodge. It was then she saw Hodge notice her. He smiled, a weak smile that was fake and didn't reach his eyes. "Izzy, how long have you been here?" he asked gently. It was then her mother lifted her head and turned it trying to see her. "Izzy… What did you…" " Mama, why are you crying?" She asked. She wanted to know or she didn't. She just wanted her to stop. Maryse smiled it was a painful one. Isabelle walked down the stairs and over to her mother. She sat down in her lap and looked up at her. Maryse wrapped her arms around her and swayed her back and forth."Why are you crying?" she asked again. "Are you and dad fighting again?" Her mother stopped swaying her. everything went silent for a moment. Her mother kissed her on top of her head.
The silence was broken by the sound of someone coming down the stairs rather loudly. "I got the glitter!" Alec said as came down the stairs. "I might have gotten some on myself but I think…" He paused on the last step and took in the room. "Whats going on?" he asked looking at her and their mother. Maryse raised her head off Isabelles shoulder and smiled at him. Her smile a façade she was putting up to protect them from some horrible truth that she would share with them when they were much older than nine and seven. Alec came and sat next to them on the floor and leaned his head on her shoulder. "I have something to tell you both." Maryse said wiping her nose on her sleeve. "It's good news." Isabelle looked at her brother and took his hand in hers squeezing in hard. If it's such good news then why were you crying? " I'm pregnant. Alec you're going to have a little brother and Izzy you're going to be a big sister." She said. Then why were you crying? Why are you sad? Why were you upset about dad? She didn't ask any of those questions. She just knew that something wasn't right. Not because of the baby but something made her feel that her parents … there little family would never be the same. That they would never be whole.
