Well, I don't really have an excuse for not finishing this story other than a lack of good ideas. I have finally finished it, though, so here is the last chapter of this story. Thank you to anyone still reading it! Hope you enjoy!
That I kept inside of me
"Where have you been, Mr. Leave-Without-An-Explanation?" Danny asks hotly as I walk into HQ.
"I had something to take care of, Danno," I answer shortly on my way to my office.
"And what? No explanation now either?"
"Yeah, I'm pretty good at that. Remember?" I answer, turning around at my door.
"Well," a familiar voice says from the entrance. "I can say, Danny. He's getting better. Sorta."
Danny spins on his heel. "No fucking way. Kono Kalakaua."
He advances on her and brings her into a hug.
"Hey, Danny. It's great to see you," she says, making eye contact with me over Danny's shoulder.
I smile at her as she pulls away. "Where's Chin?"
"Um, after the crazy Seal here left without telling us where he was going, Chin also left without an explanation. I'm sure he'll show back up soon."
"Yeah, probably," Kono agrees, but I can tell she isn't quite sure.
"So, what did our clueless McGarrett do to get you back here after three years?" Danny asks, fishing for information.
"Let's just say he impressed me with his talking skills," Kono answers, smiling. "He actually kind of sounded like you, Danny. All that time together must be making you rub off on him."
I scoff at her remark, "I will never sound like Danny. If I do, please shoot me."
Kono and I laugh as Danny make and offended face.
We're interrupted by the door to HQ opening.
"Kono?" Chin says from the doorway. "What are you doing her?"
Kono smiles as she embraces her cousin, "Just checking up on my boys."
Chin looks skeptically over at me.
Kono notices and just rolls her eyes.
"Chin, it's okay. We're good."
Chin's gaze doesn't leave me for a couple more seconds.
Finally, it shifts to Kono. "You're sure?"
Kono lightly smiles and glances over at me, "Well, it's a start."
"Apparently, with our kick-ass rookie gone for so long, which is why I am still going to call you our rookie," Danny break in, "We're starting to rub off on each other. Steve talks about his feelings, and now you, Chin, have started running off without two words about where you're going."
Chin chuckles a little as he replies, "I recognized Ryan's voice on the phone. I figured Kono left without telling him or something so I went and checked her favorite beach to see if she was there. Now I see why she wasn't."
I clear my throat awkwardly.
"Chin, I'm sorry for what I did to Kono."
Chin nods his head slowly and moves his eyes between Kono and me. "It looks like things are better now, but watch yourself, Steve. I refuse to let her go through something like that again."
"Chin," Kono warns, placing her hand on his arm. "It'll be fine. Steve's not that dumb."
"Don't count your chickens before they hatch, Babe," Danny says.
"Danno!" I say, offended. "I resent that."
Danny shrugs his shoulders. "Look at your track record, Buddy."
"Okay, okay, guys," Kono intercepts once she sees the knives shooting from my eyes at Danny. "I did not come her for someone to die."
Just as those words left her mouth, my phone rings.
"McGarrett," I answer.
I listen as the details of a new case are relayed to me.
"Speaking of dying, we got a case," I say in all seriousness. "Kono, my office."
She nods her head and follows me, Danny squeezing her shoulder as she passes him.
I close the door behind us as I watch her survey the room.
"I can see you haven't done too much rearranging in three years," she comments.
I chuckle a little, "Yeah, that takes time, which we both know I lack."
"You always made time for me," she simply states, taking a seat in a chair on the opposite side of my desk.
I walk around my desk and open a drawer. "You're a little more important than organizing my office."
"I guess that's good to know."
I hide my hand behind my back as I make my way back around the desk to sit on it in front of her.
"I'm glad you decided to come back."
Kono smiles lightly and looks down at her hands. "I'm just so tired of being tired."
I feel a tinge of guilt as I pick up her hand and place the object from my desk into her palm.
"My badge," she looks up, smiling.
"No matter how many people try, it has and always will be yours," I assure her as she runs her fingers across the letters of "Five-0."
She slowly stands up, and I follow her lead.
"Thank you," she whispers as she wraps her arms around me.
I pull her tight against my chest.
Maybe everything will be okay, and the words I've been hiding for three years might finally have been expressed, even without speaking them.
And maybe you could've made me believe
The answer to his question came all too naturally.
Go back to my home and ohana?
Hell yes.
I really shouldn't be surprised that Ryan found a way to get in touch with Steve.
He's quite a resourceful friend.
When my eyes land on Danny, I want him to hold me forever.
The one that has always been there for me and ready to make me feel better no matter what is happening.
Chin. I didn't even realize how much I missed tech work with him until I was doing it again.
The case was fairly simple. A perfect way to get me back in.
A team barbecue was in order for celebration not only for the end of the case but for my return.
"Don"t think you can just come back after three years and not have a party," Danny explains, hand gestures and all.
"You guys are sweet," I say, smiling. "But I think I'm going to go get settled in my new apartment."
"Come on, Cuz. Just one night. You can stay at my place for tonight if you don't have a bed."
I contemplate my options for a second before rolling my eyes and smiling. "Fine. It's hard to turn down a night with my boys."
"After work. McGarrett's. Beer and food on him," Danny states, rubbing his hand together mischievously.
"Did you just offer up my house, beer, and food?" Steve asks, exiting his office.
"Oh, please," Danny comments. "It's the least you could do for Kono."
Steve meets my eyes and smiles, "Okay, party at my place after work."
Paperwork wasn't bad considering very little actually happened, but it was enough to remind me of how much I hate it.
I gently knock on Steve's door, and pretty soon, Danny is opening the door and letting me in.
"You could have just walked in," Steve comments, walking out of the kitchen with a beer for me.
I nod my head but don't reply because am I ready to just waltz into my ex-fiance's house?
Definitely not.
"Where's Chin?" I ask, getting myself out of the situation.
"He said her had to run an errand before he came over," Steve answers as we make our way to the living room.
"Kono, choose the movie," Danny tells her, handing over the remote.
I scroll through my choices and smile when I find one I like.
Steve is watching me and notices when my eyes land on the movie I choose.
Without looking at the screen, he says, "Let me guess. Fast and the Furious?"
I scoff, "No, Fast 6 thank you very much."
Steve rolls his eyes and smiles at me, "I'm sorry. There's such a big difference."
I stick my tongue out at him as Chin walks through the door and sets a bakery box in my lap.
"In honor of your first day back," he says, grinning.
"Cuz, chocolate haupia cake?! You shouldn't have," I say while digging in with the fork Steve brought to me.
Chin just laughs, watching me enjoy my cake.
The night went by quickly enough. By the time the movie was over, Danny was snoring softly, and Chin was practically holding his eyes open with his finers.
"Well, I think I'm going to call it a night," Chin announces, stretching. "Kono are you staying over?"
I glance at Steve to see him waiting for my response.
"I'll help Steve clean up a bit first," I say, walking over to shake Danny awake.
"Danno!" I say into his face. "Movie is over."
Danny slowly opened his eyes and got up from the couch. "Thank you for your hospitality, Steven. See you later, Kono," he says as he exits the house with Chin following close behind.
Now, it's just Steve and me.
I gather the empty bottles from the table.
"You don't have to help, Kono," Steve says, taking the bottles from my hands.
I let him take them but follow him into the kitchen.
"Thank you for coming for me today," I say as he places the bottles into the trashcan.
He turns around and stands against the counter opposite of me.
Steve just shrugs his shoulders, "I didn't know what else to do."
"You know," I start. "I realize you're not good at this talking thing, but you could have told me you were worried instead of just trying to chase me away."
"Key words: not good at talking," Steve replies. "I wish I would have just told you that. It would have made both of our lives easier."
"You made me believe you hated me. You definitely could have made me believe you just wanted to protect me. I wouldn't have been happy about that either, but it would have been easier to understand," I explain.
"I'm sorry about everything, Kono," Steve quietly apologizes.
"I know, Steve."
"Are we going to be able to go back to how it was before?" He asks.
I shrug my shoulders. "You made me believe in you once. Maybe you can make me believe again."
"I will do everything I can. I promise," he assures me.
I pick up my phone and send a message to Chin.
Steve watches me and waits for my reaction.
Finally, I smile and grab his hand, "Let's go to bed."
That what we had was all we'd ever need
