CopDoc Drabble (4):
"Come on, doc, get into it!" Kenzi enthused, grabbing both of the blonde's hands and bouncing in place. The dark haired young woman was not giving up, she would get the doctor to join in on the festivities even if it killed her. She felt particularly hopeful since Lauren was in fact dressed up, even though it probably just meant not changing out of her work clothes.
"I'm only here to say happy birthday to Colton then I'm going back to the hospital," Lauren said. She was tired, exhausted even, but Dr. Lauren Lewis would rather be at the hospital putting in another few hours of work than at a Halloween party her ex was throwing.
"His birthday isn't until the eighth." Kenzi's voice went flat as she eyed the tall blonde, frowning when she wouldn't meet her gaze.
"Right… well…" The doctor shrugged, looking anywhere but at her inquiring friend.
"You are coming to his birthday party, right?"
Lauren knew she had to choose her next words carefully, otherwise she'd be chewed out and she didn't want that happening in front of a crowd. Or maybe that'd be best because of all the witnesses.
"I won't be able to make it because of… work." Sure it wasn't as eloquent as usual but it was safe and Kenzi usually accepted work as an excuse afterall, Lauren was a world renowned pediatric doctor; the kids needed her.
"Don't pull that on me, I know you're off and Nadia has that shift." Lauren flinched; Kenzi never said Nadia's name without sounding sarcastic as hell about it. "Don't give me that crap, you need to live, Lauren Lewis." Uh oh. Kenzi called her by her full name, another big no-no. Before she could think of an adequate response, she was interrupted.
"Lauren Lewis? The Lauren Lewis that this girl never shuts up about?"
The doctor in question turned toward the voice and saw a stunning blonde walking her way. She wore dark skinny jeans, a light green, low cut top and a blue leather jacket. Lauren had no idea what the woman was supposed to be but she was sure enjoying the view.
"Doc, this is Detective Tamsin Hardass," Kenzi said, rolling her eyes and crossing her arms.
"Ardas," the detective corrected, her eyes never straying from the blonde in front of her.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever," the young woman said. "Anyway, Tam, I was just telling her to loosen up and enjoy the party."
"You're not having fun either?" Tamsin asked, smirking ever so slightly. She didn't have to turn to see Kenzi balk at her, she could feel her incredulity. It was always so much fun ruffling the goth's easily excitable feathers.
"Not having fun?"
Both Tamsin and Lauren tensed at the sound of the new voice joining the trio. It was Bo 'Heart Thief' Dennis, the hostess of the party, in the scantily clad flesh and blood. Lauren's throat tightened as her eyes roamed over the woman's body, taking in the short skirt, tight unbuttoned shirt, lacy black bra and black glasses.
"A librarian, eh, Dennis?" Tamsin chuckled, shaking her head. No matter how things had ended between the two, she still held a small amount of adoration for the brunette.
"Yup and you two didn't put a thing into your costumes, how lame," Bo teased. She wrapped an arm around both blondes, pulling them in for a small hug before letting go and smiling broadly. "But that's okay."
"I actually have to get back to the hospital." Lauren tried to smile but she just couldn't get her lips to cooperate.
"And I offered to take her since she didn't come in her car," Tamsin added, looking at the doctor with grin. "Isn't that right?"
"Wait, wh-"
"Exactly, I took a cab here and I need the ride, thank you," Lauren responded hastily, cutting off whatever Kenzi had to say.
"You two know each other?" Bo narrowed her eyes in suspicion as she looked between the two.
"Actually," the detective grinned, drawing out the word and she moved to stand beside Lauren. "We're sort of… you know." Without further notice, the bold woman wrapped her arm around Lauren, pulling her close and placing a chaste kiss to her cheek.
"Excuse me?" Bo was bewildered. She knew Lauren's taste and she knew Tamsin's. A part of her understood that they went well together, complimenting one another's hards and softs but how in the hell did they even meet?
"Bullshit," Kenzi called out, holding up her hands. "You two-"
"Are new to each other and unwilling to put our business out for everyone to see? Yeah, shrimp, we are." There was a certain edge to Tamsin's voice as she gave the hostess' best friend a certain look.
"I should… go say bye to Colt, I'll be right back." Up until that point, Lauren remained relatively quiet but then she had to get away, feeling as if she fell into a parallel universe where she knew how to pull something over her ex lover's eyes.
The truth was, a thrill of unparalleled excitement ran up and down her spine when Tamsin claimed a relationship between them. It wasn't simply because Tamsin was incredibly attractive; it was much more than that. Lauren didn't like to jump into most things unless she had a little prior knowledge about her possible outcomes. The way the detective jumped at the opportunity to fake out Bo was spontaneous and something the doctor would never have done on her own.
"Lauren!" The sound of the small boy's excited yell shook the doctor out of her thoughts. "Lauren, you're a doctor!"
"And you're a doctor too," she chuckled in response, opening her arms for him. He eagerly leapt into her embrace, wrapping his small arms around her neck in a hug.
"Yup! Daddy said you were one and I wanted to be one but I'm a secret agent doctor, look!" He stuck his small hand in the pocket of his lab coat, one which looked like an exact replica of Lauren's. He hastily pulled out a wallet and opened it, revealing a badge.
"That's really neat," the doctor smiled, easing the boy back onto the ground. He nodded and shoved the item back into his pocket.
"Do you want to bob for apples?" he asked with a hopeful smile.
"Actually buddy, I have to go," she answered, wanting to slap herself for causing his face to fall. "Buuut, I'll be here for your birthday."
"Really?" He began to jump in place, doing a little dance. "Awesome!"
"Wouldn't miss it," she said, feigning a smile. Kenzi couldn't convince her to show up but the boy sure could. Especially when he lit up so brightly after such news.
"Ready to go?" Again, Lauren turned to see Tamsin walking toward her, smirking ever so slightly. "Hey there bucko." She kneeled and offered him her loose fist.
"Tam!" Colt exclaimed, rushing from one blonde to the other. His grin broaded when he bumped his knuckles against hers.
She grinned back and ruffled the child's hair. "I'll be seeing you later, kid, I have to get the good doctor back to… work."
"You know Lauren?" He sounded happy, relieved even.
"Sure do kid, and I'd like to get to know her better." There was an added tone to the detective's voice, something playful and suggestive. It made Lauren blush.
"Okay, bye!" Colton bounded off, pouncing on someone dressed as the back end of a horse.
"That kid sure is… peppy, ain't he?" Tamsin chuckled turning her attention back to the doctor. She stood up slowly, gazing at the smaller blonde with a look of appreciation, something Lauren hadn't cared for in a while.
"So… we're dating?" Lauren opted out of answering the question and shot one back instead.
"Sorry about that, sometimes I leap before I look, but if that means I get a chance at getting to know a beautiful, smart woman, I'd say I did well."
"Well that was… smooth," the doctor chuckled, blushing.
"You haven't seen anything yet, doc," Tamsin winked.
Lauren remained silent, a small smile creeping up onto her lips as she nodded. Halloween night might not turn out as horrid as she previously believed, especially if the twinkle in Tamsin's eye meant anything.
"It's a night of endless possibilities," the detective added in a low murmur. And with that, the two ventured off and explored all that All Hallow's Eve had to offer.
