Chapter 9: Duets (Take 2)
It's been three weeks since New Directions won Sectionals in a unanimous vote from the judges, and now we're focused Regionals where we battle The Dalton Academy Warblers and The Hipsters, a group of elderly citizens who are completing their High School Education. Quinn and I have become the "It Couple" of McKinley, so much so that lately, no members of the Glee Club have been slushied by anyone in almost a month.
"Alright guys, once again I congratulate you on another job well done at Sectionals" Mr. Schue was saying to us like he always did lately. "I've decided that the duet of Regionals will be chosen by a Duet competition. Now so I'm not a biased judge, I've enlisted Coach Beiste and Coach Sylvester to help me judge" Mr. Schue explained as Coach Beiste and Coach Sylvester entered the Choir room both holding hats in their hands.
"Now to prevent couples joining up, Coach Sylvester has the names of all the guys in the hat, while Coach Beiste has names of the songs you'll be singing for the competition" Mr. Schue explained. "Porcelain, since there is a shortage of women in this club, I've removed your name from this hat" Coach Sylvester revealed.
"We'll come up in alphabetical order…" Mr. Schue said as Rachel stood up. "First names, Rachel. Not last names. Therefore, Becky comes up first" Schue told Rachel as she sat back down disappointed. Becky went up and stuck her hand in the hat and handed the name to Mr. Schue. "Becky Jackson is partnered up with…Blaine Anderson! So Blaine, you can go to Coach Beiste and pull out your song" Schue says.
Time passed and everyone had been partnered up: Karoftsky and Tina, Quinn and Artie, Lauren and Sam, Brittany and Mike, Finn and Kurt, Becky and Blaine, Matt and Mercedes, Puck and Rachel, which left Santana with me. We got the song L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole. And we both immediately knew how we'd interpret it.
After Glee Club, Santana and I agreed to meet up at the Auditorium so we could practice. We of course, would normally bring Karoftsky and Quinn but Schue added the stipulation that everyone could not watch the practices of the others.
"Hey Dylan, did you see Finn's face when Kurt pulled out his name?" Santana asked as she came into the auditorium. "Yeah I did, I think he was hoping for Quinn since he still loves her…" I reply. "Yeah I know…Quinn told me" she answered my puzzled expression. "Anyway, how do you want to interpret this?" she asked me. "Well since we don't feel that way about each other, I say we sing it to who we really love, and every now and then sing it together and have a little dance" I suggest. "Alright. Let's practice" Santana says.
Over the next week, Santana and I had really gotten to know each other through-out every practice. I'd say we were even friends afterwards. Today we perform our duet for everyone. So far we've seen everyone perform, that means that we're last. So far we've seen Tina and Karoftsky perform We Are Young by fun, Blaine and Becky perform Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper, Brittany and Mike perform Circus by Britney Spears, Puck and Rachel perform Walk Away From The Sun by Seether, Matt and Mercedes perform When Your Gone by Avril Lavigne, Sam and Lauren perform Mmmbop by Hanson, Quinn and Artie perform Airplanes by B.O.B and Haley Williams and Finn and Kurt perform Ain't No Mountain High by The Temptations. So far, Mike and Brittany was my favorite performance.
"Last but certainly not least, it's Dylan and Santana and their performance" Mr. Schue announces as Santana and I get up. We both look at the band and they play the opening notes...
Song: L-O-V-E
Artist: Nat King Cole
Glee: Santana Lopez & Dylan James
Santana:
L is for the way you look at me
O is for the only one I see
V is very, very extraordinary
E is even more than anyone that you adore
Both:
And love is all that I can give to you
Love is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it
Take my heart but please don't break it
Love was made for me and you
Dylan:
L is for the way you look at me
O is for the only one I see
V is very, very extraordinary
E is even more than anyone that you adore
Both:
And love is all that I can give to you
Love is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it
Take my heart but please don't break it
Love was made for me and you
Santana:
Love was made for me and you
Dylan:
Love was made for me and you
Both:
Love
Everyone in the auditorium is clapping, Quinn and Brittany being the loudest. I look at Santana and then to Brittany but don't say anything. "Thank you for a great duet competition. Coaches Beiste and Sylvester and I will be back as soon as we decide a victor" Mr. Schue announces as the three faculty members leave the auditorium the group begin talking amongst each other. I walk over to Quinn and give her a huge kiss. "I loved it Dylan. You and Santana have this one in the bag" Quinn tells me just as Schue, Beiste and Sue come back into the auditorium.
"We've come to a decision, and that decision is that we can't decide on who won. So we're not having a duet/ballad/group number for Regionals" Mr. Schue reveals, everyone is in shock. "We're instead doing every number together as one big group, and all songs will feature different vocalists. That way everyone gets to sing" Mr. Schue reveals, Rachel and Finn look pissed right now...
"Coaches Beiste and Sylvester have come up with an amazing set list" Mr. Schue told us as Beiste and Sue handed out the three songs. And everyone gasped at the songs.
