I had to re-post this chapter because when I re-read it there were so many mistakes but none of the story has changed. Enjoy!
Chapter 9
Clary's POV
"Hey, cheer up Clary, Jace will be here soon," Izzy said as she pulled the cake out of the oven. She put it on the table and turned to Clary, "You said he just went out to do some stuff right?" Clary nodded, "Then stop being so worried."
Simon chose that moment to come into the kitchen and join in the conversation. "He probably just found a puddle on the way home and hasn't been able to drag himself away from his own refection." That almost brought a smile to Clary but she was too worried to joke with Simon.
Tapping the red balloon to keep it off the ground, Clary thought about what could make Jace take this long. A thought slowly crept into her head but she shoved it away with great effort. Jace is not with her, he is coming home. Maybe Simon was right about the puddle. This time it did make her smile. Jace would be here any minute.
Just as she thought it there was a knock at the door. Clary jumped up and practically ran to the front of the house leaving the balloon to slowly drift to the ground.
Jace's POV
As he walked up to the house the sinking in his gut grew heavier. Jace knew he had to tell her; she had the right to know and there was no way he could lie about this, not to her face.
With Clary's present clutched in his sweaty hand Jace knocked on the door. The person standing behind it was not who Jace expected.
"Ah good, someone has been pretty worried." Jace had no time to answer Magnus because a second later he saw a blur of red.
"Jace!" Clary practically threw herself at him and had it not been for his years of training and good reflexes he would have dropped her. She wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her head into his chest.
"Hey Clary," Jace said a bit awkwardly. One; because having her this close always had him slightly breathless and two; seeing her curled up in his arms like she was now only made the guilt unbearable. Jace looked away from the mass of red curls to see not only all his friends but Jocelyn and Luke standing behind Magnus smiling. Well Luke was smiling; Jocelyn looked more annoyed which did nothing to help Jace's nervous.
As gently as he could without shaking, Jace unlatched Clary's hands from around his neck and looked down into her beautiful eyes, "Can I talk to you," Jace looked back to the sea of faces, "alone?" Jace didn't miss the slight crease that made in Jocelyn's brow.
Clary's ever gorgeous face scrunched up into an adorable pout just like it always did when she was thinking and she looked behind her to all the people standing there. Luke smiled at her.
"It fine, go. Hopefully by the time you get back we would have finished everything here." Clary grinned at Luke and turned back to Jace to lace her fingers through his.
Just before Jace turned around Alec caught his eye. As Jace's parabatai he knew something was wrong so Jace tried to give him a reassuring nod but by the look on Alec's face before Jace shut the door, he didn't believe everything was alright.
The air outside was cool on Jace's skin and made the small curls around Clary's face blow into her eyes. Chuckling to himself he caught her wrists and turned her so that she faced him as he tucked them behind her ears.
They were standing next to one of Alicante's many canals lined with tall trees. The moon was the only thing that lit the night but it was bright enough that Jace could see Clary's coppery eyelashes and light splash of freckles as clearly as he could at day.
"Clary," She looked up at him with her head slightly tilted to the left and smiled.
"Yeah?" Her voice was so soft and gentle when it came out of her mouth that it caused Jace to look down at her lips, lips he had and horrible feeling he might never get to kiss again. So he decided that before he tells her he needed one more kiss, a kiss to last him the rest of his life. Because there was no way that after she knew she would still want to be with him.
Jace placed his hand on the small of Clary's back and pulled her into him with such force that Clary gasped. But the sound never made it past her lips because a second later Jace kissed her. He kissed her with all the passion he has ever felt for her but most of all he kissed her with ever little bit of love he had in him. Clary's small hands rested him his chest and griped his shirt so tightly Jace was surprised it didn't rip.
Jace was the first to pull away driven by guilt and shame. The second he stepped away from her he felt all alone again. Like he had something missing, the way he felt before the night in Pandemonium.
"Jace?" Her voice was so gentle.
"I love you," The words came out before he could stop them and the pain they brought was torture, "I love you, Clary."
She smiled at him before she spoke, "I love you too Jace, I always will." Jace felt as if she had just punched him in the gut.
"I'm not too sure about that…" He whispered, but Clary heard.
"What do you mean?" Her voice was utterly confused.
"I made a mistake Clary," Her eyes darkened ever so slightly before shining again.
"Whatever it is we can work through it together," Her voice was strong and firm as she slipped her hand into his and Jace wondered, not for the first time, how he ended up with someone as kind and perfect as her.
This is it, Jace thought as he opened his mouth to tell her. I'm going to break her heart.
"Clary-"
"Clary! Jonathan!" An all too sweet voice called, "Oh sorry hope I'm not interrupting anything here." Samantha stood between them smiling at Jace like nothing had happened before.
"Samantha, do you mind?" Jace's voice held a hard edge and he no longer regarded his former friend with high opinion. Clary gave him a slight glance before turning to Samantha.
"Hi Samantha," Jace noticed her normal sweet and kind voice also held and edge.
Samantha ignored Clary as her nice and sweet act washed away, "Come on Jonathan! Why are you acting this this is a big deal?" Jace silently begged her with his eyes not to continue. He should be the one to tell Clary not her, "You didn't seem to mind at the time; in fact I know you even enjoyed it otherwise you wouldn't have kissed me back."
That was when the world stopped for half a second and Jace shut his eyes. There, it's done, Jace thought just as Clary let go of his hand. Reluctantly he turned to face her and instantly wished he hadn't. The shock and hurt were plain on her face.
"You kissed her?" Her voice shook ever so slightly making Jace wanted to reach out and hold her. Protect her from the pain his actions caused her. He was about to answer, not that he had any idea what he would say, when Samantha spoke again.
"Oops… You haven't told her yet have you?" Both Clary and Jace ignored her as they gazed into each other's eyes both looking for something. Clary wanted the truth, Jace only wanted to see if there was any way she would ever forgive him. "I'm sorry to have let the cat out of the bag," Samantha droned on.
"Jace?" Clary was looking him square in the eyes.
"Clary, please, just let me explain what happened-"
"No Jace, I don't want to know what happened!" There were tears in her eyes now and her voice was quiet, "Just tell me; did you kiss her?"
Jace hesitated and Clary shook her head as a single tear slipped from her eye and ran down her check.
"Did. You. Kiss. Her?" Clary said and every word felt like a knife into Jace's heart.
"Clary," Even saying her name hurt him.
"God damn it Jace! Answer the question!" Never in his life had Jace her Clary so angry and upset. It broke his heart.
Looking into her tear filled green eyes Jace sighed, "Yes." He didn't have to look over to see the smugness in Samantha's eyes to know it was there. Clary's chest was heaving up and down and her hair stuck to her now wet face. Jace took a step towards her, weather he wanted to comfort her or beg for forgiveness he wasn't sure. But he never got the chance because a second later there was a loud smack as Clary's hand met Jace's check.
Everyone stood in shock at what had happened, even Clary who was shaking with such force it was surprising she hadn't fallen over. The sting in Jace's check is nothing compared to the agony he felt as Clary reached up to her neck and took off a chain. Shining in the moonlight was the Morgenstern ring Jace had asked her to wear.
She held out her hand for Jace to take it but all he could do was look at it. Realising he wasn't going to take it Clary frowned and let it go. She turned and was running away before it even touched the ground.
So there you go! Did you like the way Clary found out? Tell me what you think also what you think will happen after! Thank you sooo much and I hope you liked this chapter!
