Chapter 08: Operation Subjugation

"Spongebob, what the heck is going on?"

"Well," Spongebob began, "There was this thing called the Chronomancer and the Syndicate stole it and changed history so that Planktopolis is still around and I never existed and..."

He paused abruptly.

"Wait, how do you know who I am?"

"What're you talking about?" demanded Sandy, "I've known you for years!"

"Plankton changed history," repeated Timmy, "He was never born. The only reason we remember him is because of the recallers."

"What's the last thing you remember?" asked Danny.

"I was workin' late," said Sandy, "Then the world started disappearing and, well, here I am."

"Fletcher to Away Team, are you receiving?"

Danny picked up the radio.

"Copy," he nodded, "We've got something for you. We just freed one of the Spongebob's friends, and..."

"That'll have to wait, Phantom," Fletcher replied urgently, "We've got a situation."

"All forces, prepare for Coronation Protocol."

Mindy, Chester and AJ watched from the vent as the guards in the cells filed out, leaving just one guard to watch the prisoners.

"That doesn't sound good," whispered AJ.

"But it does give us an opening," grinned Mindy.

She jumped out of the vent, landed on top of the single guard, tackled him to the ground and knocked him out.

"And these people took over the world," said Chester, shaking his head as he and AJ dropped from the vent.

"Took ye long enough!"

Commander Krabs was sitting in a cell. Mrs. Puff was held in the cell next to him, along with four other figures – Jimmy, Cosmo, Wanda and Poof.

"Princess Mindy?" quizzed Jimmy.

"Princess who?" asked Cosmo.

"Who are you?" asked AJ.

"Nobody!" blurted Wanda.

Mindy took out the key and started to unlock the cells.

"So," Chester mused, "I thought you got mind controlled like that Thompson guy."

"Plankton wanted to question us," replied Jimmy, "Apparently you can't extract memories from your standard buckethead. Those helmets are so primitive."

"So if you took over the world, they'd be more sophisticated?" asked AJ, eyebrow raised.

"Oh, certainly," nodded Jimmy.

"I'd hate to interrupt yer reunion," snapped Commander Krabs, "But we're not outta the woods just yet."

"What do you mean?" asked Mindy.

"I overheard a Centurion talking about Operation Subjugation," replied Commander Krabs, "This is about to get a whole lot worse..."

Plankton's stubby fingers hovered over a big red button. Behind him, Kroger, Karen and Vlad waited for him to move.

"Hmm," mused Plankton, "This is gonna be pretty monumental. Therefore, it needs a monumental soundtrack!"

"Oh brother," grunted Karen.

"Karen!" ordered Plankton, "Play track three!"

Music suddenly blared from unseen speakers.

"That's the way, uh-huh uh-huh, I like it, uh-huh uh-huh..."

"...disc two," corrected Plankton.

Dramatic music began to play as he slammed his hand onto the button.

"Activating portals. Beginning multiversal deployment of helmets."

"What?" demanded Vlad.

"Temporal anomalies are forming over California and Illinois," reported the techie, "Probably portals."

Fletcher nodded and spoke into the radio.

"Plankton's opening portals," he informed, "He might be launching attack on our universes."

The sky rippled above the cities of Retroville, Dimmsdale and Amity Park.

A portal began to open – massive in scope and a very threatening red colour. They blotted out the sun, casting shadow over the buildings. People stopped what they were doing and looked up in awe at the massive holes in the sky.

The wind began to pick up.

"Confirming portals over Amity Park and Dimmsdale," said the techie.

"Probably one over Retroville as well," nodded Fletcher, "What're they doing?"

"Scanner's picking up small objects in the sky over Planktopolis," continued the techie.

Fletcher paled.

"Oh no."

Massive cannons had appeared out of the ground across Planktopolis, aimed at portals opened in the sky above. With massive thudding sounds, they fired dozens of small metal objects into the sky a second.

These metal objects? Bucket helmets, and they numbered in the thousands.

Helmets began to pour out of the sky over Dimmsdale, Amity Park and Retroville.

The people below began to run for cover as they fell upon them like rain, seeking out heads and clamping down on them.

At FentonWorks, the Fentons had retreated to the ops centre, and were listening to a ham radio.

"...helmets raining down on the city seem to be able to control human minds. At this point, it is not clear whether or not they are ghostly in origin. The Mayor has not made a statement. This is Lance Thunder wi-no! No! Not the face! AAAHHHH-"

The radio cut off – two seconds later, the front windows of the ops centre smashed as a rain of bucket helmets made it inside...

Danny, Timmy, Spongebob and Sandy watched through the window as the helmets were fired into the sky.

"Well," grunted Timmy, "That's helpful."

"What now?" asked Spongebob.

Danny clenched his fists.

"We find Plankton, and we end this," he snarled.

There was a groan behind them as Squidward began to wake up. He looked at Spongebob.

"I don't know why," he said, "But for some reason, I'm filled with fear."

Prepare for the climax!
