Dragons, Mates, and Children
Chapter 9
I don't own HTTYD.

"Are you ready to head back to civilatizion?" Hiccup asked as we woke up the third day we'd been at the cove.

"Sure," I said, stretching, "Mating season should be winding down by now."

Hiccup nodded happily and pulled his clothes on. "Get dressed!" he called to me, throwing my clothes onto my face as I watched him.

"Fine," I said with a long-suffering sigh, standing to get dressed. "Is everything packed?"

"Yep," Hiccup said, hoisting the bag onto his back.

Shaking my head at my stubborn mate I took the bag and put it on my back.

"Toothless, I'm not useless," Hiccup whined, stomping his foot.

"Remember what I told you on the first night, about when mating season would end?" I asked, walking to the entrance of the cove.

"Yeah, you told me that mating season would end...when the dominant got the submissive pregnant," Hiccup said slowly. "Are you saying I'm...pregnant?"

I nodded. "Yes."

"B-But I-I'm a guy!" Hiccup yelled, breaking the quiet of the forest, "I can't get pregnant!"

"And dragons can't turn into humans," I responded, "Magic is real Hiccup, just not common. I'm human because Astrid tried to kill me and you're pregnant because we mated and you want children." I didn't notice my verbal slip-up.

Hiccup froze. "Astrid?" he asked softly.

I winced. "Yes," I said reluctantly. "She was jelous that you spent more time with me, a dragon, as your best friend, then her, a human, as your girlfriend."

"And why didn't you tell me this before?" Hiccup hissed.

"Because I knew that Stormfly and Hookfang were going to mate this season, and that it would all but force her to be with Snotlout. I figured that would be more than enough punishment."

Hiccup watched me for a minute. "You should have told me," he said, walking ahead of me.

"I'm sorry," I said, not catching up with him, but letting him know I wasn't leaving.

"Why didn't you tell me? Did you not trust me?" Hiccup asked, his voice cracking.

"Hiccup," I said, putting my hand on his shoulder and turning him to face me. "I do trust you. But you were so happy. I didn't want to ruin that for you."

Hiccup gave a bitter laugh, tears streaming down his face. "I was happy with the person who tried to kill you. How could I be happy with her?"

I pulled Hiccup close. "If it's any help, she was just pretty much forced to mate with Snotlout," I said, wipping the tears from his face.

Hiccup laughed again, a real laugh this time. "Really?"

"Hookfang and Stormfly mated. Snotlout and Astrid are their riders, so they were pretty much forced."

"Snotlout won't mind," Hiccup said, "We should probably get back to the village."

"Probably," I said, reluctantly pulling away so we could walk.

"I love you," Hiccup said, grabbing my hand.

"I love you too," I said, squeezing his hand gently.
