Darkpaw's POV

My eyes were still closed. It has been three sunrises since my apprenticeship ceremony. Ivypaw and Reedpaw were just made apprentices, but Reedpaw decided to be a Medicine Cat apprentice. Why was there a weight on my flank? I opened my eyes and tried to roll over, but I couldn't. I turned my head.

"Hollypaw!" I poked Hollypaw with my hind paw. She has rolled over onto me, and she was still in a deep sleep. Ivypaw was at the front of the den, washing. Flamepaw and Crowpaw were already gone. I pushed Hollypaw off me and flicked a piece of moss off my ear. Hollypaw opened her eyes.

"Hey! What was that for," She hissed angrily. Hollypaw swiped a paw at me, but I dodged and heard Snowpelt call me.

"Darkpaw!" Snowpelt entered the Apprentices' Den and overlooked our ordeal as I pounced onto Hollypaw and we got settled in a play fight. "Woah, woah, woah, Darkpaw, Stormclaw want's us on a hunting patrol. Ivypaw, Shademist wants to take you hunting." Ivypaw perked her ears up at this.

"What about me," Hollypaw whined. Tigerfoot never took Hollypaw out training or hunting, always staying with Minnowtail. Minnowtail was less than a moon from kitting, and so Hollypaw always stayed in Camp. She hasn't even seen Sunningrocks yet!

"Well, their waiting," Snowpelt interrupted. I sighed, and Ivypaw and I stepped out of the den, blinking at the brightness. "Come on, Darkpaw." I followed Snowpelt and, as Shademist went to get Ivypaw, muzzled Shademist. We got to the entrance to Camp, and saw that the hunting patrol consisted of Ottertail, Vinepelt, Foxtail, Snowpelt, and me. Ottertail was at the front, obviously the leader of the patrol, and nodded. The patrol padded off, racing through the forest and stopping next to the river. Everyone got seated by the water, all except Foxtail, who stayed guard by the trees. I stared at the water, paw ready, gazing intently. I heard a splash. Vinepelt has caught a trout. A rustle of leaves. Foxtail was shifting. Another splash. Ottertail has missed a minnow. We stayed until well after Sunhigh. I saw something move. I flashed out my paw, hooking a fish, and throwing it onto the shore, killing it with a swift bite to the spine.

It was a small pike, thin, and, as I looked around, saw that Vinepelt's trout and Snowpelt's carp with small, barely enough to feed an apprentice. Ottertail has caught a few minnows, each one big enough to feed a small kit, and Foxtail, which has left as guard for a few heartbeats, has caught a thin pike. Ottertail sighed, and, with a flick of her tail, all the cats by the river picked up their prey and went back to camp.

"It's been a hard leaf-bare," Silverstar sighed as Ottertail finished her report. She has just got out of the nursery, visiting Minnowtail, and looked around at the camp. She was right.

"Go give Minnowtail that pike," Snowpelt whispered to me. I padded off to the nursery, ducking under the entrance, and waited for my eyes to adjust when I got inside.

"Is that for me," Minnowtail's voice mewed from the back of the nursery. I could see the faint outline of her, laying in her nest, Tigerfoot grooming her pelt.

"It is," I murmured through the fish, placing it on the floor so they could eat it. As Minnowtail shifted, I could see her round belly, heavy with kits. I left the nursery, it was dusk, and everyone was eating what little prey there was.

"Darkpaw, come eat with us," Crowpaw called. I stalked over to her. She and Flamepaw were sharing a carp, a little one, suffering through the hardships of Leaf-bare like the Clans were. I settled down to eat, and took a hasty bite of the carp. It tasted like dust, rough and dry. I almost spitted it out. When everyone was done, they all went back to their dens. I went back to the Apprentices' Den and laid down to sleep. I closed my eyes and soon fell into a deep sleep.

I woke up having to go to the dirt place. I dragged myself out of the nest, careful not wake anyone, and stalked to the dirt place tunnel. I quickly made my dirt, but sick feeling was in my stomach. I groaned. I felt sick. My belly felt like there was crow-food in it. I made my way to the den, passing Flamepaw on her way to the dirt place. She looked like she just ate dirt. I went into the den, spotting Crowpaw standing up, too. I fell asleep again, the sick feeling still in my stomach.

And done! Whew! So, looks like Darkpaw is sick. Oh no! Ha-ha! Sorry if this was too short. I couldn't think of anything to put in the end after the 'Darkpaw is sick' bit. It would have most likely been 'I wish I could be in StarClan' or something.

This Chapter's Question: What do you think made Crowpaw, Flamepaw, and Darkpaw sick?

I hope you've enjoyed this chapter, and until tomorrow(or Wednesday)!
