Chapter 9: Show Your Face, My Enemy!

Hanako sighed with relief as the bell rang signifying the end of class. During class she had felt HIdeaki's eyes drilling holes into the back of her head and it was getting annoying. Next to her AKane slept peacefully. Surprisingly, the teacher had been so busy giving a long boring lecture that he hadn't noticed that he had put nearly half the class to sleep.

Hanako flicked her partner's forehead. "Up. *Flick* Get up. *Flick* Akane mumbled something. I don't have time for this. Hanako thought. The girl grabbed the ginger's arm and pulled her out of the chair. The rest of Akane's body fell to the floor with a thud jolting her awake.

"W-what...?" Akane wondered sleepily.

"Get. Up." Hanako ordered.

"But the show doesn't start for three hours." Akane yawned.

"I have no idea what you're talking about and I don't even care. Get up." Hanako began nudging the girl with her foot.

"Need some help?" Hanako glanced at Yuuki who smiled.

"Knock yourself out." The girl crouched beside the drowsy ginger and smiled.

"Akane-san if you get up we can go shopping together."

"Wait what...?" Hanako gasped.

Akane face brightened. "Really? YAAAAAAAAAAAAY!"

"Yuuki-san...why?" Hana sighed.

Yuuki giggled. Akane jumped up and quickly gathered her things.

"Okay as soon as I get my stuff into my room, we're going!" Akane exclaimed. Hanako groaned. Please don't let this be like the time we were getting ready for the dance. Hanako begged silently.

"Come on come on Hana-chan let's go! Yuuki-chan you're coming with us! That's final!" With that the ginger dashed out of the room. Yuuki laughed while Hanako shook her head.

"This one noooooo this one. No no no this one!" Akane raced around the room with eagerness. The trio had only spent ten mintues in the store and already both Yuuki and Hanako's arms were filled with clothes.

"D-does she always do this when you two go shopping?" Yuuki asked.

"Yes." Hanako answered frankly.

"Hey what do you think?" Akane asked holding up two dresses. "This one oooooor this one?"

"Uh I can't see them." Yuuki told her.

"Orange one it is!"

"Of all the things you could've said," Hanako grumbled. "It had to be shopping."

"Sorry," Yuuki apologized. "Umm...how long does it last?"

"A couple hours..."

"Oh no..."

"Best shopping day ever!" Akane gushed. By the time Akane had finished both Yuuki and Hanako were carrying ten large bags each, all were filled to the brim with shirt, dresses, skirt, etc.

"I'm never going shopping with her again..." Yuuki whined. Hanako smirked at the other girl's comment. And now she knows why I hate shopping.

"Where have you been?"

"Zero-kun!" Akane cheered happily as she tackled her fellow hunter. Zero glared down at the ginger, irritated. Hanako shook her head as Yuuki giggled.

"Sorry Zero," Yuuki said. "I went with on a shopping spree. It took longer than I thought." Zero ignored the explanation and turned to Hanako.

"You and Akane have a job to do."

"Another Level E huh?" Akane asked, serious.

"Several, I'm going to help you deal with them." Zero told them.

"Several?" Yuuki asked, concerned.

"We don't know why but, the Level E's are starting to attack in groups. They're getting smarter and more dangerous." Hanako explained. The girl paused, her keen hearing picking up the sound of soft footsteps. Turning, Hanako was surprised to see Senri coming up from behind her. Zero glared at the vampire.

"What do you want?" he sneered.

"Zero." Hanako warned. Zero stared at her for a moment then sighed. Hanako lifted her arms towards her ginger and gestured towards the bags. Akane immediately grabbed the bags hanging from the girl's arms. Once the bags were settled onto her arms, Akane motioned for Yuuki and Zero to follow her. The prefects glanced once more at Senri before leaving with the ginger.

"Senri-kun," Hanako said after they had left. "What are you doing here?"

'You're leaving..." he stated.

"Of course, it's my job." the girl said.

"You're going to fight more than one of them it'll be dangerous." he reminded her.

"I can't refuse an order. Besides I'll have Akane-san and Kiryu-san with me." The vampire was silent.

"What?" Hanako questioned. Senri refused to look at her yet Hanako could tell that he was conflicted. Hanako smiled gently.

"You're not worried about me, are you?" she asked, although she knew the answer. He didn't speak. The Weapon sighed, then stood up on her toes and gently kissed his cheek.

"There's no need to worry." she assured him. "I'll be fine." Hanako grabbed and went to catch up with Akane. Behind her, Senri watched her go with a hand on the cheek she had kissed.

The full moon glowed brightly against the darkness of the night sky as Akane and Hanako, in weapon form, made their way through the alley ways of the city. Akane's swift footsteps made little sound on the concrete ground. Their target dashed a few yards ahead of them, the lone survive of a group of five. But not for long. Akane frowned in frustration before skidding to a stop.

A flame-like wave of power that surged from the curved blade of Hanako's scythe form. The reddish flame rushed towards the fleeing vampire who, at that moment, looked back and jumped to the side. Akane growled and gave chase. The vampire grinned, feeling triumphant. His victorious expression fell as the Level E came face to face with a gun pointed in his direction. Zero narrowed his eyes. The Level E took a step back only and winced when his back pressed against a sharp blade.

"Got you." Akane said. "It's over leech."

"It does matter how many of us you kill."the vampire sneered. "Master will make more of us! We will destroy every hunter in the world, you don't stand a chance!"

"Master? Who is your 'Master'?" Akane questioned. The vampire grinned.

"I will NEVER tell."he growled. Akane pressed the blade to his throat.

"Answer me!" she commanded. The vampire laughed.

"I will say no more. Not to you, not to any of your kind."

"You-!"

Akane-san it's pointless. Hanako said. He won't say anything else. Akane glared at her weapon then the vampire.

"She's right, Akane." Zero said.

"Tch." Akane sneered before she beheaded the vampire in one swift movement. The body immediately turned to dust and the vampire was no more.

We must inform the Council of this. Hanako said.

"Right." Akane agreed.

"A Master huh?" the hunter said glancing at the bile of dust.

"Yes." Akane said. " We now have a serious problem. Their Master can only be a pureblood as they're the only ones who can turn humans into vampires. This pureblood's planning on getting rid of us. He or she is a danger to us and our fellow hunters. We need to stop them and soon."

Hanako stared up at the night sky, counting the few stars she saw that were not hidden behind the gray clouds. The roof she laid on was cold and hard but the girl ignored the discomfort. Although she did not hear him, Hanako sensed his presence.

"Hello Senri-kun." she greeted.

"You're back." he said as he sat down beside her.

"Yeah..." Hanako said.

"Is something wrong?" Senri asked her.

"No...actually yes. But I must inform the Council first as it involves us hunters." Hanako told him.

"So you won't tell me?"

"I will, but not yet." The two were silent for a moment, quietly enjoying one another's company. Hanako's heart raced in her chest. It was so loud she was sure that Senri could hear but the vampire gave no sign that he did. The girl took a deep breath, trying to calm herself but her heart would settle. What is wrong with me? she wondered. Just then, Senri shifted so that he was laying down next to her, his head on her shoulder close to her heart.

"Are you alright?" he asked.

"I-I'm fine." Hanako stuttered.

"You stuttered." Hanako could hear the smile in his voice.

"I did no such thing." the girl disagreed.

"Whatever you say." Senri chuckled softly.

"Shouldn't you be in class?" Hanako grumbled.

"I wanted to see you."

"You...did?"

"Yes..." he answered softly.

"Why?" The vampire did not answer. Hanako sighed and dropped the subject. After some time, Hanako carefully ran her fingers through Senri's hair. The vmapire froze for a moment then relaxed, closing his eyes contently.

"He's becoming too close to her." Ruka said.

"And, pray tell, why does that bother you?" Rima asked, although she could call less about what the other girl thought.

"She's a hunter!" Ruka snapped. "She kills our kind."

"She hunts Level E's, those who have lost their sanity." Rima reasoned.

"She our enemy!" Ruka hissed.

"Ruka calm down." Akatsuki drawled. "She and Akane aren't like the other hunters."

"And how are they different!?" Ruka yelled.

"They don't hate us." Aidou said.

"How can you know that?" It was Takuma who answered.

"If they hated us like the other vampire hunters," Takuma said. "Hanako wouldn't be so willing to spend time with Shiki. Neither she nor Akane have ever treated us with disdain or hatred. There's nothing to be upset about Ruka."

"But-" Ruka began.

"Let it go Ruka." Kaname said. Although he appeared calm Takuma could tell that his friend was slightly annoyed. Ruka pressed her lips together and turned away, glaring out the window at the people on the roof.

Akane leaned against the tree, her eyes closed. However, the ginger was all but asleep. Her ears remained alert to the sounds of the night.

"I know you're there Zero-kun." she said, opening one eye. "Don't you want to keep me company?" Zero removed himself from his hiding place behind a nearby tree. Akane gently patted the spot beside her and, after some hesitation, Zero walked over to sit beside her.

"Are you really alright with this?" the silver-haired boy asked.

"With what?" Akane asked innocently.

"With your partner and that vampire." Akane chuckled.

"You worry too much Zero-kun. Hana-chan can take care of herself."

"They're becoming too close."

"That shouldn't concern you."

"It should concern you!" Akane shrugged. Sighing, Zero dropped the subject. It was clear that the girl was not going to reconsider allowing her fellow hunter to be friends with the enemy.

"You know not all of them are bad." Akane said after some time.

"Name any vampire you know who isn't a monster." Zero growled.

"You hunters are so narrow-minded. You act like vampire are the only creatures you kill humans. Did you forget that humans kills other humans too? Or did you believe that humans were completely innocent?" Zero didn't respond.

"There are good humans and bad ones." Akane went on. "The same goes for vampires. But I don't expect you to believe that right away, you're pretty stubborn." Zero shook his head and didn't answer. Akane smirked contently. A cool breeze blew across the courtyard, wrapping the two hunters in its chilling embrace as they gazed up at the star lit sky.
