wow totally forgot I had finished this chapter too! ;) aren't you guys just lucky enjoy!
Later that evening after the masquerade ball had been stopped by Soul's uninvited appearance everyone went to bed and were told to not leave their rooms at the opera house for the fear of being the Phantom's next target. Maka unable to sleep much due to uneasiness woke up in the early morning to go to her father's grave. She grabbed her dark green cloak opened the door leading to the back exit of the opera house. She quietly snuck passed Kid who had placed himself there to guard her. She sadly smiled knowing he'd be furious if he caught her leaving.
"Monsieur" Maka said finding the stableman who worked at the opera house. She handed him a bag of francs and turned the other direction looking for her warmer cloak.
While the driver was fixing the horse reins someone had managed to sneak up behind him and smacked him on the head causing him to pass out.
Maka then came around the corner. Her long cloak now dragging behind her looking in every direction to make sure no one was following her.
Meanwhile upstairs Kid had awoken and saw Maka's door open with no girl inside. He panicked and ran down the stairs.
While kid frantically got ready to chase after her. Maka, had no idea someone had replaced the driver. She went back to the carriage and told the cloaked figure "The cemetery, to my father's grave, please" while he nodded and began to move.
Kid running down the stairs spotted a window and below he could see Maka's golden brown hair peaking from her dark green hood. He cursed to himself and ran faster down the stairs.
"Where have they gone?!" He asked the driver who had been knocked out. The man groaning and holding his head looked up at Kid and muttered,
"Oh, the cemetery."
Kid ran to the stables and grabbed the first horse he could find and rode it towards the cemetery. "Dammit Maka." He muttered under his breath as he rode faster and faster.
As Maka sat in the carriage she looked out the window reflecting on the events that had brought her here and how the Phantom and turned her once cheerful carefree life, upside down.
In sleep he sang to me
In dreams he came
That voice which calls to me and speaks my name
Once Maka arrived at the cemetery gates she thanked the driver and wandered inside.
Maka now wearing her dark green cloak and a dark blue dress walked through the cemetery rows looking for her father's. She held dark red flowers in her hand as she wandered about through the early morning mist.
"Little Makie thought of everything and nothing. Her Father promised her that he would send her the Angel of Music. Her father promised her...Her father promised her…" She whispered as she walked further and further into the cemetery, while church bells rang in the distance signaling a new hour of the day.
WISHING YOU WHERE SOMEHOW HERE AGAIN BEGINNING
"You were once my one companion..." Maka quietly sang as around her graves began to appear ranging from small headstones, to sad angels and statues. The grey around her matching her current sad mood.
"You were all that mattered...You were once a friend and father -then my world was shattered..."
Maka walked under an arch and began to move forward still glancing around for another presence making sure she was alone.
"Wishing you were somehow here again... wishing you were somehow near...Sometimes it seemed if I just dreamed, somehow you would be here..."
Maka walking further into the cemetery looked up as it began to snow. The cold making her cheeks red as a rose and her light skin began to glow against the cold air and ground.
"Wishing I could hear your voice again...knowing that I never would...Dreaming of you won't help me to do, all that you dreamed I could!"
"Passing bells and sculpted angels, cold and monumental. Sing, for you, the wrong companions, you were warm and gentle."
"Too many years fighting back tears, why can't the past just die?!"Maka looked sadly upon the mausoleum before her. The name etched upon the top of it read "Albarn"
"Wishing you were somehow here again, knowing we must say goodbye! Try to forgive, teach me to live! Give me the strength to try!"
She began to slowly sit down on the cold snowy ground as silent tears made their way down her cheeks.
"No more memories, no more silent tears! No more gazing across the wasted years! Help me say goodbye..."
"Help me say goodbye!" Maka looked down at the roses she brought as the snow around her began to pile on her dress. Maka sat in silence for a few minutes before she began to hear a voice coming from inside the mausoleum tomb.
"Wandering child, so lost, so helpless yearning for my guidance."
Maka abruptly looked up with fear in her eyes. She trembled as she began to rise questioning the voice.
"Angel or father? Friend or phantom? Who is it there, staring?"
"Have you forgotten your Angel?" The voice sang back to her as she cautiously began to stand walking towards the mausoleum.
"Angel, oh, speak what endless longings echo in this whisper." Maka now in an almost trance like state began to inch closer and closer to the building.
"Too long you've wandered in winter far from my fathering gaze." The voice gently sang back to her luring her closer.
The lights from inside began to light up as the gates opened on their own.
"Wildly my mind beats against you…" Maka sang as she gasped and cautiously took a step back but then continued to walk forward up the long stairway to the building.
"You resist" The voice sang as Maka and the voice began to sing in unison. Maka walking closer and closer to the light as she sang back to what she believed was her true Angel of Music.
"Yet your/the soul obeys...
Angel of Music!
You denied me/I denied you
Turning from true beauty"
"Angel of Music! Do not shun me/my protector
Come to me/your strange Angel..."
Suddenly the voice turned dark but Maka no longer was fearful for she had been put in a trance and continued to walk towards her father's tomb.
I am your Angel of Music...Come to me; Angel of Music….
Just as Maka was about to enter Kid seeing what was about to happen came riding in on the horse yelling to her.
"No, Maka, wait! Wait!" At his voice Maka no longer paid attention to the voice inside but turned to face Kid.
"Kid!" Maka gave him a questioning look as she began to walk back down towards him.
"Whatever you believe, this man - this completely unsymmetrical thing - is not your father!" Kid angrily cried. He brought out his sword and walked towards the tomb.
Maka though had seen Soul the Phantom drop down from above and gasped as he tried to attack Kid. He screamed as Kid was able to turn around and block what could've been a deadly blow. Both men angrily began to fight Kid blocking every blow Soul threw his way.
Maka followed and watched as they fought unable to do anything herself. She silently prayed Kid would be okay as both men ventured further and further away from her. Soul currently had the upper hand but Kid was smart and moved towards a fence where when Soul struck got his blade stuck. He quickly pushed Kid to the ground and grabbed his sword and attacked.
Kid nearly dodged and got back up quickly and lashed out at Soul. The snow around them began to swirl and the air got colder. They fought and moved until Kid lost his footing and Soul managed to slash his arm.
"Agh!" Kid cried as he grew angrier He fell into the snow and rubbed his arm in the cold ground. Then launched back on his feet and began to fight again. He managed to get the Phantom on the ground this time. As he was about to lash out a final blow Maka yelled
"No, Kid, no!" Kid glanced towards Maka and then looked back at the Phantom who was on the ground with his hands up.
"Not like this…" Maka spoke again
Kid held his sword up to strike a blow again but then he scowled and put it away walking back towards Maka. He grabbed her arm and pulled her onto the horse. As they rode away Soul got up and scowled at them both.
He panted and cleaned his coat off.
"Now let it be war upon you both!" He muttered under his breath.
…...
After several days of rehearsing for the Phantom's play Kid came up with an idea and went to Stein's and Justin's office to discuss it. He barged through the doors and addressed them both sternly.
"We have all been blind and yet the answer is staring us in the face. This could be the chance to ensnare our clever friend."
Justin rose from his chair and lifted his feathered pen at Kid "We're listening..."
"Go on." Stein said dropping what he was doing
Kid walked closer to the men and smirked.
"We shall play his game perform his work, but remember we hold the ace for if Miss. Albarn sings….He is certain to attend!"
"We are certain the doors are barred!" Stein said smiling
"We are certain the police are there!" Justin stood walking towards Kid.
"We are certain they're armed." Kid sternly said
"The curtain falls! His reign will end!" All three men said as Kid smiled and left the office as Stein and Justin began to prepare.
Kid made his way to where Maka was below the opera house where Tsubaki had found her after her very first performance. He walked in on Maka who was silently crying holding a hand up to her face which was lit by the soft candlelight. She turned around at the sound of his steps and smiled sadly.
"Kid, I'm frightened...Don't make me do this..." Maka rose as her dress rose with her. Her long dark blonde hair held back by a black ribbon. She wore a dress with a white top and a dark green skirt. She began to walk towards Kid who sighed.
"Kid, it scares me, don't put me through this ordeal by fire." She walked towards him and hugged him. Kid taken aback by the sudden hug let his arms wrap around the frightened girl. She wept in his arms as she began to speak again.
"He'll take me, I know it then we'll be parted forever...He won't let me go." She whispered into his shoulder.
Maka then let him go and looked into Kid's deep golden eyes.
"What I once used to dream, I now dread. If he finds me, it won't ever end. And he'll always be there, singing songs in my head...He'll always be there, singing songs in my head..."
Kid grabbed Maka's arm before she could walk away from him and held her hands.
"You said yourself, he was nothing but a man... Yet while he lives he will haunt us 'til we're dead." Kid said softly to Maka as he held her close, he looked into her green eyes and saw the fear within them. Maka then looked down at their hands and began to speak
"Twisted every way what answer can I give? Am I to risk my life to win the chance to live? Can I betray the man who once inspired my voice?" She sighed and then glanced towards Kid
"Do I become his prey? Do I have any choice? He kills without a thought He murders all that's good I know I can't refuse...and yet I wish I could." She then looked straight at Kid and wiped the tears from her jade eyes.
"Oh God, if I agree what horrors wait for me in this, the Phantom's opera?"
Kid slightly smiled and grabbed Maka's hands again
"Maka, Maka don't think that I don't care but every hope and every prayer rests on you now."
Maka gently smiled as Kid pulled her into an embrace. Together they sat there in silence holding each other tightly before they would be parted for the performance.
MEANWHILE
Down below in the Phantom's lair Soul was standing in front of his organ smirking. Putting on a small black mask that covered the area around his eyes
"Seal my fate tonight I hate to have to cut the fun short, but the joke's wearing thin." He grabbed a nearby candle and began to walk to where he held a small replica of the stage.
"Let the audience in. let my opera begin!" Soul's sharp teeth shone in the candlelight as he lit the small stage on fire and walked away further preparing to make a grand appearance in tonight's performance.
and so it begins. the next chapter may or may not be the last and there might also be a "happier" alternative ending for the soma fans out there in a epilogue I'm writing... we'll see ;D
