Chapter 9:

I was excited and scared, was I ready to talk to him over the phone? What if he realizes just how broken I really am before Stu can help me?

(Breathe) I did as I told myself. I needed to get back to work and focus.

The rest of my day went by pretty fast,so now I just sit in the drivers seat of my car, waiting to pull out of my parking spot. I will have to eventually pull out and drive. I can do this, Kate needs me and Stu needs me to be ready tonight.

I put things into perspective and drove down the road to the beer distributor, and picked up some light beer, and Apple Orchard hard cider, and made my way to Kate's apartment.

I didn't know what to expect when I arrived there, was she going to be in tears, stoic and almost lifeless, or will it be a hidden kind of pain? Kate only ever wanted to drink when big things happened in our lives. The last two times; when her father died, and before that was the night I walked in on my ex husband with another woman, which is also the same night I almost died.

I closed my eyes trying to get those memories out of my mind, because tonight wasn't about me, it was about my best friend Kate and she has already been through enough. The two of us have been there for each other through it all and all each other has.

I put on a fake smile, and grabbed the bottles from my trunk.

'knock, knock, knock'

"Jamie!" She had the biggest smile on her face, and wrapped her arms around me for a hug.

"Uh, Hi Kate" I hugged her back with the only hand I had free, and walked into her apartment filled with apple decorations and fragrance. "I brought beer, and cider." She grabbed a beer from my hand and I set the rest in the fridge. I came in the all white living area with a cider in my hand and sat next to her on the couch. I waited for her to say some thing, though I knew what ever it was she wasn't going to just blurt it out.

"Do you remember when we were kids the promise we made to each other?" She took a sip of her beer and waited for me to respond. Kate and I have known each other since we were 5 years old. We met when her, and her father moved in right next door. I have always been shy and awkward, and had a hard time making friends, so it surprised me when she came right up to me and declared me her friend. "We promised that no matter what happens ,and what happens in our adult lives that we were going to be in each others lives ,and stay friends forever?" She actually looked like she was going to cry, but gave me a long hard stare holding her composure, and her beer in her other hand.

I nodded and took her free hand in mine.

"Of course I remember, you are my sister, my best friend, and what ever it is you can tell me." she stared at me for a moment and let a single tear fall from her cheek.

"I know, and trust you more than any one that's why I need to tell you first." I nodded and waited, trying to prepare myself for what could come. "Jamie I..." she looked like she was really struggling, and I wanted to help her so bad, and it was killing me not knowing. "I... well you know I have been talking to Mike for a while now." I nodded. I didn't know the extend of their relationship, but I knew that unlike me she was not afraid to express herself to men. She opened her mouth to speak again when my phone started to go off, startling the both of us.

I glanced down at my phone quickly seeing that it was Stu, as 'Sexy Stu Bennett' flashed on my screen. I had forgotten all about calling Randy with him tonight. I wanted to ignore him and be here for Kate, but the mood quickly changed, especially when she saw my face light up.

"Jamie Boggs!" Her face lit up, as if there was nothing wrong, and you never would have guessed she was going to tell me something earth shattering just moments ago. "Sexy Stu Bennett? I thought you were talking to Randy?"She giggled.

"No, I am talking to Randy, Stu is just helping me"

"Are you sure about that?"

"Yes I'm sure!" I ignored his call, and tried to explain to my nosy best friend. "Stu and I are just friends, and he's just being my wing man with Randy, because he just wants to see his friend happy with a nice girl." She gave me a stare that said she knew something that I did not.

"Why did you ignore his call?"

"I'll call him back later" My phone lit up again, and she raised and eyebrow at me.

"He's persistent"

"It's nothing we were just going to Three way call Randy tonight, he's making me take steps to charm him into falling for me." We both looked at the phone as it went to voice mail.

"Does he know about Pete?"

"NO!" I said too quickly, and Kate knew to drop it. We were silent for a while, both of us sipping out drinks.

"You think he's sexy?" I was a bit thrown by her response.

"Who?"

"Stu, you have him in your phone as 'Sexy Stu Bennett'!"

"He put it in like that, the day he kidnapped me, it was funny"

"So you don't think he's sexy?" I felt my cheeks get warmer, and I didn't need to respond, she nodded.

"Were just friends!" I said again, getting frustrated, but the truth was I didn't want to admit on some level maybe I was attracted to Stu, but only because he is a great guy, and a good friend, and yes... dare I think it sexy.

"Ok... ok I can take a hint, but Sexy Stu really wants to talk to you!" She let out another giggle as my phone rang again. I quickly grabbed it off the table and answered this time, only to shut her up.

"Hi Stu"

"Do you know I tried calling you like Three times, are you avoiding the call so that you don't have to call him, because we are doing this?" Kate stared at me intently hoping to hear what was being said.

"Uh, yea, sorry Stu I was distracted." I stared at Kate, and this was only getting weirder.

"Distracted? How?"

"Kate is with me" I just blurted out, and she threw a throw pillow at me.

"Good, you need more moral support when we do this. Put it on speaker phone" I sighed, and did so setting the phone on the table in front of both Kate and I.

"Ok It's on speaker phone, but how is this going to help me?"

"Hi Stu!" Kate giggled as she leaned into the phone. I heard Stu's amused laugh.

"Hello Love, so are you going to help me get your stubborn friend to flirt with Randy over the phone?" I rolled my eyes.

"That might be tough, I don't think Jamie Knows how to flirt" They both laughed.

"Ha Ha you're both hilarious!"

"Then prove us wrong, call him right now, and prove you know how to flirt" I hated being challanged, because the competitive nature in me wants to prove everyone wrong.

"Fine, the both of you shut up while I do this!" I was running on adrenaline now, but I couldn't look over at Kate or I'd lose it. I dialed Randy's number, and waited as it rang three times.

"Well hello there Sunshine!" Randy cheerfully answered the phone.

"Hello there yourself!" I giggled.

"So to what do I owe the pleasure of actually hearing your voice tonight?" Damn he was good , and he was laying on really thick, making it harder for me to come back, just Stu's voice lingered in my head telling me I couldn't flirt rang in my head.

"Actually, Randy I was just sitting here thinking about you, and then I realized what am I waiting for."

"Well I'm glad you called."

"You are?"

"Yes, you actually saved me from another boring conversation with Stephen Farley, and Stu has been on the phone for hours." I bit my tongue at the mention of Stu.

"Yes, but I am clearly better company than a bus full of men, I can give you things they can not!" Oh crap as that left my lips I realized just how sexual that sounded, but I had to roll with it now. The line went silent, and I got worried for a moment.

"Oh really!"

"Really!"

"Why don't you tell me exactly how much better company you can be!" I felt my face getting hotter by the second, and I tried to hold my composure.

"I could tell you, but I'd rather show you" I heard a muffled noise that sounded like a moan, and I felt butterflies through my entire body.

"Well now, Jamie that is a very bold statement, and I am going to hold you to that promise." I bit my lip, I was about to trip over my own words, but he continued. "As a matter of fact I'll be in a town near you next week, I'd love to see you again." Inside my head I was doing cartwheels, and jumping for joy.

"Well then Orton it's a date!"

"It's a date!"

We hung up, only leaving Stu on the Line, and I finally looked up seeing Kate staring at me with a look of both confusion and admiration. I was still shocked that I was able to do that. I actually had a real date with Randy Orton, except he was going to expecting Jamie Sex Kitten, not Shy scared and damaged Jamie.

"Jamie... Jamie... Jamie" Stu said through the phone trying to get my attention, and Kate couldn't take her eyes off of me.
