Ch. 7: Demon Sword Ragnarok: Part 1

Shinigami hummed happily to himself as Maka Albarn and Soul "Eater" Evans cornered their target, Sonson J. He applauded as Maka executed the criminal in one clean cut.

"Very good performance, Maka-chan! I wouldn't expect anything less from one of the top students in her class. Wouldn't you agree, Hina-chan, Sasuke-kun?"

They shared an exasperated glance. They knew he was not ignorant; his carefree attitude merely took a toll on their patience. Nonetheless, they trusted him with their lives. The two owed him at least their leniency.

"Shinigami-sama, are you not worried about the demon sword's awakening?" Hinata asked meekly.

"Of course! Which is why you two are here~!" They seemed to be quite surprised; Her eyes widened, and her partner glared. "Oh, come now! As guardians of the next generation, surely you would have expected to rescue them, no?"

"No! SOUL!"

Maka fell to her knees by Soul's limp body. He had gotten hurt protecting her, and now she couldn't protect herself. Her body trembled in fear as the harsh reality hit her.

"What are you doing? Get...out of here...while you can," Soul wheezed desperately. He could barely breathe with the gash bleeding heavily. Although he was deeply wounded, he'd fulfilled his job as a weapon: protect his meister at all costs, even if it means his death.

"No...no! I won't leave you!" She glanced at the pink-haired sword wielder who started speaking to no one in particular.

"You...idiot..." All his muscles which were holding his head up went slack as he became unconscious, leaving his partner without any sense of security. She was going to be killed, she thought, right then and there. Her eyes grew wide as Chrona stalked towards her. The sword was dragged on the stone brick floor with its tip scraping noisily behind him. He raised his arm above his head, ready to strike down his opponent in a single slash.

"Did you know," he asked curiously while locking eyes with Maka's fearful ones, "that my blood is black?"

'This is it for us...for me. I'm sorry, Soul.' She closed her eyes and accepted defeat by bowing her head low to the ground. 'It's all my fault. I'm sorry I've failed you. I wish I could have been stronger...!'

Before he could swing his arm, the blade of a scythe broke through the door and pierced his stomach. The boy stared in shock at the obtrusive blade and let out a shriek of horror and confusion.

"W-wahhhh! I don't know how to deal with this!"

"Oh, do not worry," spoke a soft, feminine voice, "for I will help you deal with it."

The blue-haired maiden broke through the door and drove her weapon deeper into Chrona's abdomen. Black blood dripped from his wound and onto the scythe, staining its natural sheen with gobs of the thick substance. He stammered unintelligibly to himself, as it seemed, and stared fearfully at her.

"W-who are you?!"

With a brisk sweep of her arm, she dislodged the scythe and rested its staff on the floor. The chain clasped around her wrist rustled and clinked when she shifted. Raising her pearlescent orbs, she stared disinterestedly at the pink-headed boy. It caused said boy to grow increasingly uncomfortable. His hand continued to twitch, as did his eyes.

"I am Hinata Hyuuga, a scythe meister sent by Shinigami-sama to detain you and your precious demon sword." She gave a mock bow.

"Enough fooling around, Hinata. One of the students is badly injured," Sasuke's voice cut in. She gave a quick glance to the unconscious Soul and trembling Maka before walking over to them. She knelt on one knee and patted Maka's head reassuringly.

"Ne, Maka-chan, it'll be alright. We'll get you out of here soon."

The blond sniffed and nodded sadly, too shocked yet relieved to answer. She wasn't going to die today, and it was all thanks to the people she thought she would hate. Maybe she could get along with these young instructors. Through misty eyes, she smiled and clutched her skirt.

'Thank Death...we're going to be okay.'

"Thank you, Hinata-san, Sasuke-san," she said quietly, looking up to smile at the older female. Instead, however, she gaped as the sword known as Ragnarok came down on Hinata's back. "LOOK OUT!"

Metal clashed with metal as the Hyuuga spun around at the last second to deflect the oncoming blow. Chrona stumbled back and paused before raising his sword in front of himself.

"Ragnarok, Screech."

A mouth materialized near the sword's hilt, smirking before releasing a high-pitched screech.

"PIGYEEEAAAAAAH!"

The sound pierced the air and resonated within the church. It became increasingly painful for the shinobi with impeccable hearing to focus on the impending fight. Hinata dropped her weapon to hold her head and cried out in pain. She was momentarily paralyzed, unable to move the slightest bit. All she heard was the incessant ringing in her ears.

"Hinata, get up NOW." Her reaction was instantaneous. She back flipped to gain some distance before charging at him with a kunai. Chrona tried defending himself by parrying her strikes. However, her speed got the best of him. The knife imbedded itself deep within his arm, and he cried out in pain as black blood seeped through his clothing.

"Owww! It hurts!" He looked at the wound pathetically and shivered in revulsion. "My blood...she's too strong! I don't wanna fight her any–"

"Shaddup, Chrona! There, I hardened the blood to stop the bleeding. Now hurry up so I can EAT THEIR SOULS!" Ragnarok licked his lips and grinned. "I want their tasty, human souls!"

"Byakugan." With her blood limit activated, Hinata stood in her stance and waited patiently. Chrona, unsure of what to do, ran towards her with the intent to kill her off. When he was in reach, she jabbed her hand viciously at his stomach. His eyes bulged, and he retched. Again and again, she struck him on various parts of his upper body and finished with a kick that threw him out of the church.

Maka watched her movements in awe and admiration. She felt as if she were watching a dancer gracefully moving through a routine rather than a warrior striking her foe. Her movements were precise yet, at the same time, fluid.

'Wow. Such grace and precision, it's amazing.'

Chrona laid on the ground limply, his eyes staring at the night sky. He was still breathing, albeit shallow and quick. He shifted his gaze to his approaching opponent.

"Chrona, do something before this bitch kills us both!"

The blood splatter surrounding Hinata rippled and formed small droplets which floated idly in the air. She gasped as the spheres started to close in on her, trapping her in her place.

"Bloody Needle."

"HINATA-SAN!" Maka shrieked in terror as she saw her fall to her knees with her body impaled by black needles. She was going to run towards her but was held back by Sasuke. She tried wriggling out of his grasp to no avail. "W-why? We need to help her!" He shook his head and pointed.

"Look again." She did as he told her to do and gasped softly. When the needles impaled the body, the clone dispersed in a cloud of smoke. "We are not reckless when it comes to battle."

"Don't worry, Maka-chan! I'm right here." Hinata approached her and Sasuke cheerfully. "Although, you should head inside very soon. This fight is about to become more dangerous than I had anticipated..." She glanced at her partner with a knowing look.

Do you sense a Witch's Soul, then?

Hai. She is currently floating approximately five klicks above us. She is waiting for us to finish this battle, it seems. She's trying to analyze us.

"What's happening? Hinata-san? Sasuke-san? What's the matter-" Then, she immediately understood. Her Soul Perception kicked in and sensed a new Soul. "A Witch?"

Said Witch finally chose to reveal herself to the Shibusen members. Her broom slowly descended towards them. Her face was hidden by her hood, but her slitted eyes shone brightly in the night. The Meister and Weapon duo stood in front of the defenseless student protectively, their eyes narrowed as her descent came to a halt. The Witch giggled maliciously before speaking.

"Well, well, what do we have here? Members of Shibusen have taken care of Chrona, I see." She raised an arm towards Chrona's prone form. One of her tattoos slithered off her arm and formed a giant snake which grabbed his body in its mouth. "We're finished here. I have collected all the necessary data and will be on my way."

"I apologize for this inconvenience, but we cannot allow you to just walk away. Our duty is to eliminate Witches, such as yourself. Especially those who pose as a potential threat," Hinata calmly replied. "Maka-chan, you might want to stay back. You understand, ne?"

"Th-that reaction...how was I not able to see it earlier?" she asked.

"Soul Protect, one of the advanced magics Witches have developed over the centuries," Sasuke started to explain. "The magic surrounds her Soul and neutralizes its wavelength, effectively camouflaging it as a normal Human Soul."

"How interesting...you two know much, considering you are foreigners." The Witch raised her arms and waved them up and down. Tiny arrows sparked to life, rising from the Witch as she chanted. "Maybe I can observe how you will fare against this. Nake, snake, cobra, cobubra...Vector Arrows!"

By the end of her chant, the arrows had grown to ten times their original size. They came zigzagging towards the vulnerable blond Meister. Her olive green eyes widened in fear as she felt her body become rigid, rendering her unable to move from her spot.

"Soul Resonance. Witch Hunter."

Hinata swung the scythe effortlessly at the oncoming arrows. They sizzled when they came into contact with the glowing white blade. In Maka's eyes she was an adept meister, showing no signs of fear or anxiety which the enemy could use against her. Instead, she looked to be enjoying herself.

"My, my. Such powers you possess, scythe meister. Unfortunately, I believe it is time I take my leave," the Witch announced. She giggled evilly. "Of course, not without a parting gift."

Before Hinata could react, one of the Witch's tattoo snakes shot forward with its mouth wide open heading towards Maka.

"Dammit..."

She braced herself for the inevitable pain, closing her eyes and accepting her fate. Yet again, she managed to avoid becoming harmed.

'Maybe she deflected it.'

The sense of foreboding never left her mind. She fearfully opened her eyes and to her horror, she found Sasuke standing over her with the snake's fangs lodged into his shoulder.

"S-Sasuke-san!"

An Author's Note in the form of an omake

Hinata stands next to Sasuke in front of the small crowd of people asking for the author. She timidly fiddles with the hem of her jacket before deciding to speak up.

"Ano...Author-san is too ashamed come out and apologize herself. She is deeply s-sorry for not updating during the s-summer. Summer omakes w-will follow..."

The Uchiha scoffs and rolls his eyes.

"...eventually..."

SMACK

"Itai..."

"Sasuke-kun, stop insulting Author-san! She's very busy, as of now. Gomennasai, from Author-san."

"Sure she is. She lost her faith in the story and nearly abandoned it-"

"Sasuke-kun!" She nervously faces the crowd. "W-what he means i-is, she's n-not been–well, she-"

"She had writer's block for the whole summer. End of story."

He easily dodges another one of her punches and sighs.

"Author-san will be back within the upcoming month. Ja ne."
