Chapter nine: Frozen Heart
"Anna you'll only make this worse!" Elsa was on the edge of tears when Glinda and Elphaba ran up the stairs, Kristoff was helping Olaf the get up safely without losing any of his body parts. Anna was desperately trying to convince her sister, that she should come back to Arendelle with her, that everything could go back to the way it was before. Elphaba couldn't help but smile, she was so naïve, just like Glinda who would have done exactly the same thing. Elphaba and Glinda slowly entered the room, not wanting to alarm the sisters.
"I can't!" Elsa screamed, in a reflex Elphaba let herself fall down pulling Glinda with her. She yelled at Anna but it was already too late, Anna was struck.
Getting up, Elphaba ran towards Elsa and Glinda, Kristoff and Olaf went over to Anna. The three of them helped her up. Elphaba grabbed Elsa firmly at her shoulder, trying to calm her down. From the other side of the room the other four watched, and listened.
"Elsa, are you okay?" Elphaba tried but Elsa didn't listen, she looked over to her sister. "leave. Now." She said, trying to keep a straight face. Anna protested "no, I'll be fine, we're not leaving you again…" "yes you are" Elphaba finished, turning around to face them. "Glin, I'm sorry. Just, leave" she sighed.
Elsa used her powers to shape another figure, a tall broad and very strong seeming figure. When it came to life he walked over to the little group of friends who stood frozen to the ground. As soon as Marshmallow left the room Elsa collapsed to her knees, Elphaba was still holding her shoulder getting on her knees as well. "Elphaba, can you do me a favour?" Elsa panted, losing the queen attitude she had been keeping for so long. "of course, what is it?" Elphaba smiled reassuringly.
A bit further away from the ice castle Prince Hans and comrades were forcing themselves through the heavy snowfall. Hans walked up front, the stranger who volunteered earlier walked up next to him. "Did the princess travel with anyone?" He said while adjusting his scarf. Hans assumed he wasn't very used to such cold. "she travelled with a friend of hers. A bubbly blonde, I believe her name was…" He fell silent, not remembering the name. the stranger nodded, even though it wasn't very visible through all the layers of clothing he wore. "I haven't asked you for your name yet" Hans smiled his usual smile, showing off his white teeth "Fiyero" he answered, not wanting to tell anymore. "how far till we reach the castle?" Fiyero asked, trying to wipe some snow off his clothes. "About an hour or two…"
Elphaba sighed as she grabbed her broom, 'what way would they have gone?' she thought while making her way down the stairs of the ice palace. Elsa had asked, no, insisted, that she'd go with her sister. But first she had to find them, which wasn't easy. Everything was white. Suddenly she saw footprints which could only be Marshmallow's, she mounted her broom, just to get her feet out of the snow and not to leave any footprints, paranoid as she was.
"we just fell off a cliff, you should see your hair!" Anna yelled as she dusted off her clothing, Marshmallow had thrown them of a cliff. "yeah, but yours is turning white" Kristoff realized how foolish it sounded as soon as he said it, but it was true. Glinda looked at it with wide eyes. "how very confusifying" she mumbled, getting a weird look from her friend. "wait, what?" Anna said, after taking a look at her hair. "does it look bad?" she said carefully. Glinda shook her head, her curls twirling around as she did so. "no…" Kristoff mumbled. At this point Olaf held up his head "you hesitated" "no I-" Kristoff fell silent, thinking for a second "I know where to go." He said suddenly and started pulling Anna along with him. "so.. where exactly are we going?" Anna countered with a frown. "My friends, they'll know what to do." Kristoff offered as an explanation. "Yeah right, the 'love experts' " Anna mutters underneath her breath, looking behind her if Glinda was still with them. "How are you so sure they know?" Glinda chirps, finally catching up together with Olaf and Sven. "Because I've seen them do it before."
Elsa was pacing around her ice-castle, nervous and scared. She had done it again, she couldn't keep her powers in check. How could she have been so stupid? Were those trainings with her green friend all futile? She swiftly combed through her hair in an attempt to fix it, looking at her reflection in the ice. She hardly recognized the woman in front of her, eyes wide and her entire body showed how afraid she actually was. She used to be so calm, able to hide her powers as well. She took a deep breath "conceal it, don't feel it. Don't let it show" she muttered her own childhood mantra over and over until she had calmed down a little. Straightening her back and clenching her fists at her sides she breathed in once more. Elphaba had gone after her sister, and companions of course. She was sure she had struck Anna's heart this time, hadn't she been warned? She let out a frustrated cry as she continued to pace around again.
Glinda looked around, they had been walking for some time now and her feet hurt terribly "Can't we take a break?" she called towards Anna and Kristoff, who were walking ahead of her. Anna was wrapped up in Kristoff's arms, shivering from the cold. If it was in better conditions Glinda would probably have squealed with enthusiasm. The two didn't listen to her, walking from geyser to geyser to try and warm Anna a little. Sven gently nudged her back and Glinda puffed "oh, shut up" she muttered. 'did I just- I just talked to a reindeer…' she thought to herself. She gently pet the animal on the neck and sighed. "I wish Elphie was here, she'd know what to do…" she murmured and let out a small sigh. Suddenly a gloved finger tapped her on the shoulder and Glinda quickly spun around to see who had snuck up on her. Elphaba quickly pressed a finger against her lips to sign that Glinda should keep it down. "You came after us?" Glinda whispered, stating the obvious as usual.
Why did she even go after them? Elphaba wondered as she kept looking at her usually bubbly friend, she had a look of worry spread over her face. "Elsa asked me to" she stated bluntly and looked ahead to see Anna and Kristoff walking there. "Is she alright?" She added quickly, that being her major priority. "I don't know. She's slowly turning white I think" Glinda said as the two of them started walking again.
"I do have to tell you something about my friends" Kristoff said awkwardly as he and Anna walked from geyser to geyser. "well, they're more like family to me" he quickly adds, Anna just looked up at him and waited for him to spill. "they took me in as a tod. I have to warn you though, they can be very rude and loud, very very Loud" he says and laughs nervously but stops when he feels a gently tug at his arm "They sound wonderful" Anna says with a small smile as they arrived.
