Chapter 9
Golden eyes, big white teeth, blood, death. I see this over and over. The monster and me alone in the woods. I'm running faster and faster away from it. It's chasing me, I can hear it huffing and puffing behind me. I trip over a risen root from a tree stump and land on my hands, I turn around to see the monster face to face with me. The eyes turn to fire, it's fully black, looks just like a hell hound. It leaps on top of me and I see it's teeth about to rip my throat out..
"Ahh!" I'm fully awake now.
It was just a dream.
My hands are shaking and I'm sweating a little bit. I see Rockie on the floor next to me, he's awake now too, looking at me. I must of woke him up.
I take a couple of deep breathes to calm my nerves. I look over at my nightstand and see the Werewolf book.
I pick it up and flip to the spot I marked for my stand point.
The only thing I've read so far was an introduction about warnings for reading this and the writer's background and what not.
I flip through the pages to check out the chapters until I spot one that looked interesting, Hell Hound, I feel all the blood from my face vanish.
'knock' 'knock'
I look up at the door to see Jess, "Are you okay? I heard you scream" she comes to sit on the end of the bed.
I quickly hide the book, "Nightmare." I give her a reassuring smile that everything's fine.
She grins back, "Well alright. I'm making eggs if you want some."
"Thank you." I say.
She pats my knee then walks out the room.
I do my normal morning routine then make my way to school.
Once again a silent road trip with Sophie.
First period starts and there's no sign of Alice.
I wait a few more minutes hoping she'll walk through the door but still no sign of her.
Gym class ended and there's still no sign of here, I walk to the lunch room hoping I'll at least see the others but as I open the double doors, nothing.
Are they still out?
I grab my lunch then decide to go sit outside by Alice's and my tree behind the school.
It's decently warm out with a slight breeze.
I finish my lunch pretty quickly so I choose to just sit here and relax. I lean my head back against the tree and shut my eyes.
"Enjoying the weather?" I hear a deep voice I recognize instantly.
My eyes spring open and just as expected I see Daniel before me. I quickly stand up and put some distance between us. He notice's my alert so he puts up his hands, "I just want to talk."
"I have nothing to say to you." I say bitterly.
"I know you know about me..and the others." He keeps his hands up.
"How?" How could he know? No one was around when I was told and if there was, they could of picked up his scent, right?
"I can read your body language and how you just acted, plus you kinda just told me."
Shit. They're going to kill me.
"Whatever they said to you about me, which I'm sure they have said something, it's not true." He begins to lower his hands.
I stay silent, letting him continue.
"They kicked me out because I saw their leader was sloppy and I wanted to show them how it's done correctly, and the only way to do that is to challenge the Alpha on a one on one fight to the death or if one gives up."
"That's what they told me."
He looks at me with a shock, "Was there anything else they told you?"
"Why should I tell you? For all I know, right now, you're the enemy. So how about you tell me what's going on from your side."
He takes a minute, "Have you ever wondered why Lucas took you in so quickly? Why he all the sudden took interest in you and how quickly everything's happened? Why he told you the biggest secret a werewolf should never tell?"
I actually have thought about this. I agree it was strange but I just thought he actually cared.
"I can tell you have. What if I told you he could be using you?"
He couldn't be. Not Lucas. Not Alice. "You're lying. You're trying to get in my head!" I scream out, I don't know what to believe right now. He's making valid points but so are the others.
He tries to come closer to me, "Stay away from me!"
"Angel-"
"No! I can't hear anymore." I would drive home but I don't have my own car so I decide to run. I make my way towards the woods just because that was my first instinct.
"Angel!" Daniel screams from behind me.
I ignore him and continue to run. My lungs pump harder and harder as air flows in and out of them. I fully sprint by the trees as they pass in a blur. My feet pound against the Earth each step I make. The smell of moist plant life and the sounds of crickets and frogs surround me. I get this burst of energy that pushes me to go faster and I obey. I feel like I'm floating off the ground from how fast I'm going, senses heighten, I can now smell fresh water from a creek and hear baby birds chirping in the distance.
I smell something sweet and tangy, so I follow it. The closer I get the stronger it is. I see in the distance a figure laying on the ground so I slow down my running to a smooth jog. An injured deer lays on it's side breathing slowly. It's leg is bent at an unnatural angle, I go to touch it to see how bad it is and just as I make contact, the deer squeals and tries to get up to run away.
Without any luck it just lays back on the ground. I start to pet it's neck to try and calm it down some. I know it's not going to survive so I decide to spend it's last moments by petting the head, neck, and body. I lift it's head and sit underneath it so I can pet it easier. Good thing a tree is behind so I could lean against it. I shut up eyes while stroking the rough fur, concentrating on the heat it radiates until I fall asleep.
'SNAP'
My eyes fly open. It's pitch black and I smell a rotting odor that I had to cover my nose.
I look down at my lap and see the deer head still resting there except the eyes are wide open along with it's mouth and the tongue rests against my thigh.
I get up quickly then concentrate on the sound I just heard.
Nothing looks out of place until I hear a low scruffing sound.
I stay frozen, not even blinking and continue to listen.
I feel a warm presence behind me and hear a sniffing sound. My hair moves as the thing behind me intakes and blows out each breathe. I look over my shoulder took to face to face with a giant grizzly bear.
I plead in my head for it not to kill me. Just one swipe of a bear's four inch claws could kill a person.
I fully turn around and back away from the giant predator. I get a few steps away until I trip over the deer underneath my feet. I let out a grunt from the pain traveling up my spine from the fall.
The bear gets up on his hind quarters and let's out a loud growl that echos through the forest.
My heart begins to race. I think about running away but this bear could easily catch up with me, plus it would find the chase as a game then who knows what my body could end up as, so I choose wisely to stay where I am.
The bear walks towards me, the Earth vibrates from each step it takes, he's only a reach away from me now.
He growls again and this time lowers his head and grips his teeth onto my jacket and lifts me into the air and shakes his head around violently.
I hang onto it's snout, applying pressure so he let's go of me.
The bear throws me to the ground. I feel a sharp pain in the back of my head and spine once more.
I groan from the ache then roll over to my stomach to try and get on my feet.
Instead there's a sudden pressure pushing me onto the ground, I turn my head to try and see what it is, the bear has one paw on the middle of my back.
It pushes a little harder and it feels like my back is going to break, I let out a scream.
To my luck the pressure is gone.
The sounds of a bear and wolf growling comes from the side of me.
I look over to witness the bear on it's back and a giant, fully black, wolf, what looks to be the same size as the bear, is on top of it.
The last thing I see is the wolf biting into the bears throat, then I hear a crack and pop along with a tear.
My eyes begin to flutter then fade until all I can see is darkness.
