Without further ado this is…

Chapter 2 of; 'Prison'

The Davis Family

It was 12 hours and 23 minutes exactly to get from the Tokyo airport to London.

12 hours and 23 minutes spent brushing up and refining already present English skills, even though she was assured that both Martin and Luella spoke fluent Japanese.

12 hours and 23 minutes spent attempting to clear her mind.

And 12 hours and 23 minutes spent worrying about John.

Beside her Naru had been pleasantly absorbed in his father's newest release stopping only to use the restroom, order tea, or to scold her for spacing out.

Seated behind them Lin and Modoka spent almost the entirety of the time whispering about plans, cooing Jun, or sleeping. And behind them a sleeping Monk and an exam driven Yasu sat silently.

Masako had offered to come but had been so caught up in programming that, to her dismay, she wasn't able to make it. Mai had been disappointed to say the least, it had been far too long since she had seen the black haired medium. To compensate she had invited the girl to tea at a new café right outside her apartment. It was a new addition to the neighborhood. A quant little shop that served some the best tea she had ever tried along with the most delectable little snacks ranging from sweet and delicate pastries to savory Paninis. After the brunette had spoken so highly of the café it was difficult for the medium to refuse. She had never seen her friend so absorbed with something.

Ayako had been busy with last minute hospital work and had sworn that she could be available for the next case.

And John… well John was another story completely.

John was captured but some unknown entity being tortured or worse killed… and here she was wondering about tea and crumpets.

God she really needed to get her priorities straight.

Mai turned her head staring at the bleached sky.

From up here everything looked like a mesh of colors.

A monotone arrangements of shades so mixed up you couldn't tell them apart.

Almost like her thoughts.

Jumbled at best.

Everything that she had once looked at from the ground as beautiful had been replaced with a much more realistic and less attractive version of itself. The clouds looked less like the white tufts of color littering the sky and the bright rays of the sun almost looked out of place.

She shifted the blanket over her body and cuddled up against the window eyes peering over the edge catching glimpses of places she could only dream of going. She tapped her fingers against the arm rests relishing in the cold they offered.

She shifted again peering in between her seats until she could fully she the Omnojie.

"Lin?"

He looked up at the younger girl before handing his child back to his wife. "Yes?"

"What's China like?"

He raised a brow clearly confused as to what China had to do with anything, "Why do you ask?"

She shrugged, "Sake of knowledge I guess."

"It's similar to Japan but the traditions are very different. A very spiritual and connected place. The greenery there is unlike anything I've ever seen… the culture is unforgettable. The compassion everyone has for others make one feel at home."

"What kind of traditions?"

"I grew up learning the Xing Yi Quan style of martial arts, my brothers all choose different styles. Seasonal festivals, good food, and the warmth of family. It's beautiful there…."

The younger woman smiled watching as the man who prided himself on being as stoic as her employer let his true colors show.

And she understood how Modoka fell in love with this man. "Do you think we could visit China some day?"

He smiled nodding, "I'd like that."

Mai smiled brightly, "I'd like that too."

She turned back into her seat setting back.

"Wanting to meet the parents already?"

She blushed narrowing her eyes, "You're one to talk. Aren't you taking me to meet your parents?"

He shook his head looking up at her, "Not at all. You're doing your job and 'assisting' me on a case which just so happens to include the presence of my parents. So in that case you're meeting your employers as every employee should."

She chuckled lightly before turning her attention back to the outside world, "You're ridiculous."

"I'm merely stating a fact."

She ignored him continuing to watch the clouds cluster. Below them she saw the familiar 'V' of a flock of birds and it reminded her of Japan.

"You're worried."

She turned her attention to him, "What are you talking about?"

"You're spacing out. You're tense. You're tapping your fingers. And you've been sighing uncontrollably for the past…." He glanced down at his wrist watch, "Seventeen minutes."

She raised a brow, "Since when have you been so good at reading character?"

"When have I not been good?"

"Touché."

He placed the book in between his legs calling a flight attendant over. She gushed blushing a crimson before complying.

"Yes?"

"Tea. Two cups."

She nodded smiling all but skipping away.

Mai rolled her eyes.

It was sad, just how ridiculous the females of this world were.

All it took was a face and a body and it was if they had won the lottery.

But then again he had always had that effect on them.

Even her.

The woman returned only moments later with two cups of Chi. He handed her one to which she accepted greedy, enjoying the bittersweet and spicy nature of the tea. It just so happened to be a personal favorite. It wasn't done the way she would have wanted it but this would have to suffice.

"Are you going to tell me or am I going to have to force it out of you?"

She blinked innocently, "What are you referring to?"

"What's bothering you?"

She shrugged, "What isn't."

"Mai you know that isn't a valid answer…"

She shook her head angrily, "You know what… it just occurred to me. You always make me come to you when I'm upset but you never come to me when you're feeling down. You never come to me for anything… If I'm telling you what's going on with me you've got to return the favor and tell me what's wrong on your side… you do realize that right…?!"

He nodded taking a sip, "On the contrary. I come to you for quite a few things. I seek your advice when it comes to potential cases, your remarkable intuition, not to mention your knack for always understanding and being a truly compassionate person."

"That's not true."

He shook his head, "But it is."

But she was too caught up with her thoughts to even spare him a second glance.

She snuggled closer into the warmth of watching her breaths fog up against the glass methodically.

Eyes dropping.

Her body a cocoon of warmth.

And for a moment she felt at peace.

Even if it was for just a moment.

She opened her eyes to darkness.

An empty darkness.

She shifted sitting up looking around the area for any form of life.

Nothing

She stood up staring down at the cloth that covered her body. A thin flimsy material that hardly came down mid-thigh. Tears and stains colored the entirety of the piece, reds and blacks that she could only hope weren't what she knew they were.

Shuffling down the cracked halls all she could hear was the sound of tiny footsteps scurrying and the rusty pipes moaning above her.

She fisted her clothing watching goosebumps form against her pale skin.

The slight tingling sensation eliciting a sharp intake of breath from the woman.

"… David."

She called looking out eyes scanning for him. He was supposed to have met her here over an hour ago.

He was late.

Again…

What if he was caught… no that's ridiculous… but Mother said that if she saw me with him again…

"Lacy…?"

"David!?" The young woman turned her head following the dull voice of her lover. "David… where are you?"

She heard him cough, a loud and raspy noise that filled the space.

"David… Can you hear me?"

No response.

Her heart hammered in her chest.

She had sworn to protect him… how could she let this happen!?

She turned another corner prayers slipping past her lips.

.

.

.

Her eyes widened in horror.

They had been caught.

The wound against his stomach was proof enough.

It had been their marking.

A single slit in the stomach and three strange markings on the victim's forehead.

"… Da… David…" she whispered in horror staring at the body that use to be her lover.

She felt a pang threw her chest.

The sort of pain that felt like ice.

Her veins crusted over and she could feel her heart slow down until there was nothing left of her.

Her thoughts, all her memories suddenly meaningless, nothing but empty space in a casket that had been reduced to nothing in seconds.

The vision faded and she has left in a pit of darkness.

This darkness familiar.

"Mai?"

She turned around smiling at the medium, "Gene."

He smiled at her from a distance.

Unlike his brother he had been keeping his distance, inching closer to her every time they met. His way of giving her space… or maybe it was his way of realizing what he had done to her.

Either way it did nothing but aggravate her.

She frowned at him, "I'm alright."

He nodded smiling at the girl, "I know. And that's why I'm staying away. I don't want to hurt you again."

She shook her head, "But you're not!"

"I could."

"Gene… you won't. You wouldn't."

His smile faded replaced with a frown eyes narrowed, "You don't know what either of us are capable of. Take my advice and don't tempt either of us… it's for your benefit."

.

.

.

"Is John safe?"

"He's safe for now. It's his strong will that's keeping him alive."

"How long will he…?"

"A week at most. His captor wants him alive."

"I'm sorry."

He shook his head, "Don't be."

"Hey Gene?'

"Yeah?"

"I'm sorry."

She could feel hands under her legs.

The scent of earl gray invading her lungs.

The bitter cold causing her to shiver digging further into the warmth surrounding her.

Hushed whispers and tentative touches.

"…Is she…"

"Yes."

She could feel his chest rumble as he spoke.

"N… Naru?"

She stiffened wanting to face him head on. She couldn't be afraid of him anymore.

She tangled her arms around his neck waiting for his reaction.

The burning sensation of his skin against hers the only thing that kept her awake and sane.

He shifted adjusting to her new position wrapping his arms around her waist.

His form of acceptance she could only assume.

"Yes?"

"Have we arrived?"

He chuckled lowly nodding against her, "Just now."

She smiled nodding, "Good."

Words exchanged in what sounded like English.

"Mai… go back to sleep…"

The brunette nodded, "Okay…"

He smiled against her neck and breathed I her scent.

Laughter and happiness… a family….

Then erupted warmth.

She awoke to darkness.

A heavy weight against her chest causing her to blush serval shades of crimson.

He had fallen asleep on top of her, his head resting against her collar. The rise and fall of his chest pushing into her chest comfortably.

She cringed at the contact but forced herself to endure it a bit longer… she needed to snap out of it.

She smiled to herself… it was rare that he showed this side of himself… maybe as a result of their earlier conversation… that she didn't know, nor care to know.

She shifted until he had wound her way out of his grasp. She looked down realizing all too soon that she was not in her clothing but a pair of black shorts and a black t shirt all of which undoubtedly belonged to the man in her bed. She shook her head cursing Modoka for persuading her to buy a combination lock suit case.

She turned towards the window on the far side of the room pushing the thick blue blinds aside.

The sky outside the mansion would colored with the beginnings of a sun rise. Blotched in shades of blue, red, and orange.

And for a moment she thought about how right it looked from her place down here.

Pushing the curtain back into place the woman turned back around peering at his sleeping form.

She smiled, he looked so innocent… so vulnerable. Nothing like the ruthless tyrant he was when he was awake and ordering her around to make him his tea.

Sliding the duvet over his numb form so that he wouldn't catch a cold she pulled the bedroom door open slipping out silently.

The halls smelled of peppermint.

A soft scent that she could only describe as comforting.

The mansion in its current state was purely magnificent.

Its high ceilings and hand crafted trimmings absolutely astonishing. Painting after painting coated the walls settling in front of a pale gray wall that was illuminated by the warmth of lamps that stretched on.

The sight taking her breath away.

The fresh aroma welcoming her into the depths of the home.

She sniffed the air for the origin of the scent stumbling into a set of wide doors.

Aching with curiosity she pushed the large doors open only to be welcomed into a room she was sure belonged to a king.

Shelves upon shelves stretching out for what seemed like miles. Books of all genres, colors, and languages littering the empty spaces. The cream color of the walls illuminating the room in an airy haze.

A mahogany desk stood in the center of of the room behind it a triangular plane of windows dressed in cerulean curtains.

She stood in absolute wonderment.

"Beautiful isn't?"

She gasped turning to face her intruder a hand against her chest.

"I'm sorry dear. I didn't mean to frighten you."

She smiled softly at the man, "No not at all…"

The man before her appeared to be no older then fourth. The slight brushing of gray coating the roots of his brown hair. Soft blue eyes staring at her.

"Dr. Davis I presume."

"Miss. Mai Taniyama."

Her smile widened as she bowed before the man who only bowed as well.

"Would you like a cup of tea?"

"It wouldn't happen to be mint would it?"

He cocked his head to the side, "Is that a problem?"

"No of course not. It's just that I had smelled it all the way from my… er our room."

The man smiled, "Our?"

"Nar… Kazuya was sleeping there as well… I only assumed we'd be sharing a room…"

Dr. Davis laughed taking the girls hands in his larger ones, "Oliver is quite strange. The minute I think that I've figured my own son out I realize that I'm further away from it than ever. May I assume that that's the reason you're in his clothing?"

She blushed, "Yes it's quite a long story…"

The older man smiled, "And I have all the time in the world."

"I suppose so. Shall we have a seat Dr. Davis?"

"Martin please. And of course. May I suggest the window seat? At this time of day it is quite beautiful. The sun bleeds though the windows at just the right angle."

He placed a hand on her back leading her to the windows before handing her a cup of tea and settling down himself, "I'm not sure how I knew but I had a feeling you'd be awake. So I made an extra cup just in case my suspicion was right."

"What do you know?" She raised the cup to her lips tilting it slightly enjoying the extravagant flavor of the mint. It flooded her senses numbing her with its richness. "It's delicious… how did you make it?"

Martin smiled taking a sip of his own cup, "Luella grows mint in the garden, and she has for as long as we've been married. I harvest it when it has reached its peak and boil it with its steam after its boiled I add a few fresh mint leaves to the cups and pour the tea on top. A few walnuts and some honey and its got to be my favorite midnight snack."

She smiled into her cup taking another long sip, "I can see why Naru is so fond of tea…"

"Naru?"

The girl blushed stuttering, "Naru as in Narcissist… when I first met him he had gone off on a tangent about his beauty… he's got to be the biggest narcissist I've ever met."

Martin laughed, "That's nothing like the Naru I know."

She shrugged laughing, "They have a saying in Japan. Everyone has three faces. One they show to their friends, one they show to their family, and one they show to only themselves. That is the truest of all their faces."

"That's quite beautiful Ms. Taniyama."

"Mai. Just Mai."

He smiled at the young woman, "Well then Mai I'm still anxiously waiting to hear the story behind your wardrobe choices…"

And so they began.

They had spent hours talking about almost everything.

Family, ideologies, religion, politics, the supernatural, innate abilities, etc.

At around seven twenty five he had made an appearance.

They had been in the midst of a heated conversation about astral projection.

"Oliver tells me that you see Eugene… in the astral plane."

She nodded, "Yeah. He assists on cases. He'll appear and show me things regarding the case. I saw him on the way here…"

"You saw who on your way here?"

She flinched inwardly, "No one…"

He glared at her and she regretted saying it instantly. He pushed himself from his position of leaning against the door way stalking towards her and his father.

"I think I deserve an explanation."

"It's not like I had the time to tell you anyways. I've been asleep since the plane ride and then when I woke up you were asleep…"

He walked up to her crossing his hands across his chest, "Mai you know better."

She glared at him standing, "My argument still stands. It's a valid argument"

"Oliver…"

Naru broke they're eye contact to acknowledge his father, "Father."

Martin shook his head, "Why don't you take a seat and Mai can tell us the entirety of her vision. Is that alright with you honey?"

The brunette nodded, "Yeah."

And so a full length recap of her dream commenced.

She told them about David and the markings.

She told them about Lacy and her death.

She told them about Gene and his anger and cryptic messages all the while trying to hold back tears.

"Is John going to be okay?" she murmured.

Martin put an arm around the girl pulling her against his chest an action that reminded her of her own father, of what little memories she had of him.

"Mai dear, we'll figure this out. As soon as we have breakfast we're going to Broadmoor. A good friend of mine works there and I've already set everything up. We're going to get him back safely."

"I cannot believe this!" I screeching voice from outside the room forced their attention away from the crying girl to the banshee standing outside their door.

"Modoka…" The young man acknowledged.

"Naru you're unbelievable! It's seven in the morning and she's already crying!?" Modoka stormed in in a robe perching herself besides the girl rubbing circles against her back, "What did that moron do this time?"

Mai laughed, "Nothing… yet."

"Yet is right…" She turned to see Lin at the door way carrying a numb Jun. He walked in standing beside the brunette who had carefully taken the infant from his arms bobbing him on her knees while greeting him with kisses.

"I've never see you all up so early…" a tired voice called from the background.

She turned her attention to the older woman dressed in white.

She looked like an angle dark hair with dark eyes and a smile that could melt the coldest of hearts.

"Luella…?"

"I prefer Mom."

They had gathered on a wide table, in front of them a wide arrangement of breakfast options. Ranging from pancakes, waffles, bacon and eggs to a more traditional steamed rice and miso soup offering.

The brunette put her hands together before joining everyone else in tucking into their meal.

"How was the flight…? I hope it wasn't too bad." Luella asked taking a sip of her tea.

She had all but dragged Mai into the kitchen asking her to make the tea that even Naru the narcissist himself couldn't help but praise.

Mai smiled shaking her head, "It wasn't too bad and thankfully the jet lag is at a minimum."

Martin smiled, "That's good to hear. After we've solved the case we've got quite a few things planned."

She smiled turning toward Naru, "I can't wait then."

The rest of their breakfast had consisted of Modoka feeding Jun and speaking in a language that made Naru cringe.

After everything had been put away Mai had been sent upstairs to get dressed for her day to which she remembered she was still dressed in her employer's undergarments resulting in stammering and invalid accusations.

Mai ran up the stairs quickly unlocking her suit case before pulling a pair of shorts and a t-shirt with a jacket. She had been told that the weather in London happened to be very unexpected so she prepared for the worst.

A knock on the door then his voice asking her if she was ready.

"You can come in."

He opened the door pulling the closet door open pulling out jacket, "Are you ready?"

She nodded running a comb though her tresses, "I think so."

"You didn't cringe yesterday." The girl stopped well aware of what he was referring to.

"I didn't want to make a scene."

He smirked, "That or maybe you've finally fallen for me."

She shook her head smiling, "Hardly."

The scientist stopped taking a hold of the younger girl, "Mai…?"

"Yes?"

"John isn't going to survive… not this time…"
