I do not own Inuyasha
The day had met it's end and still worry ate heavily at her stomach. She just couldn't help the nagging feeling that told her that she had let them leave practically vulnerable. She trusted Kagome, and she wanted to trust in her abilities, but as much as she wanted to believe that the young girl could fend for herself and the young kit alone, her instincts told her otherwise.
A war was waging in her mind. Maybe she should have followed them despite Kagome's objections. At least then she'd know that they were both safe. But if she had Kagome would have been torn down by the fact that the Taijiya doubted her capability. Sango was torn. On one hand she didn't want to wound her sister, but on the other she didn't want this lapse in judgment to permanently separate her from her new family.
Unable to remain stagnant any longer she sat up, slowly removing herself from her husband's warmth. When he began stirring from his slumber, she kissed his cheek and whispered "Shhh now… I'm going for a walk. I'll be back soon." At his soft nod she continued her descent.
She walked around the clearing gathering twigs to feed the dying fire. Once she had a significant amount she lowered them swiftly into the embers of the flames. The flames licked greedily at the new wood hungrily, as Sango lost herself in her thoughts.
That's how Kirara found her, staring unseeingly into the fire. She made way over to Sango and gently nudged her with her nose, as if to ask what was wrong. Shocked out of her musing Sango looked down at the small neko and began to run her hands through her thick fur. "I'm worried." she said in answer to the nekos unspoken question. Kirara mewed trying to lessen the crinkling of Sango's brow with her soft assurance. Then something in Sango's mind clicked and she turned sharply towards her small companion.
"Kirara." The neko gave an encouraging nudge for her to continue, "I need you to track Kagome and Shippo down and keep an eye on them. They need the extra protection. I know you're as tired as we are, and I ask much of you, but could you do me this favor?" She pled of her feline friend.
"meow." Came Kirara's instantaneous reply with a sharp nod of her head.
Receiving all she needed as confirmation Sango's face lit up as a bright smile stretched across her face. The heavy weight of not knowing how her sister and kit were doing vanished with Kirara's affirmation.
"Thank you so much, Kirara! I will sleep easier knowing that you will be there to look after them." the demon hunter exclaimed as she thrust her arms around the thick neck of the freshly transformed fire cat. Kirara purred into the embrace.
