Chapter 9
"We'll leave tomorrow…" Klaus said as he walked out of the mansion. " Be ready by 5 am. "
Stefan nodded.
"Caroline are you coming…?" Rebekah asked.
"Yeh give me a minute." Caroline said smiling at the impatience written all over Rebekah's face.
Rebekah shrugged and followed her brother out of the boardinghouse.
Caroline turned to Stefan for a moment.
"Caroline are you sure about this?" Stefan asked.
"Stefan the way I see this being even remotely successful is if we both learn to trust each other. Do I trust Klaus completely? No. But I don't trust any of you completely either. " Caroline said shaking her head.
"Caroline?" Stefan said frowning slightly.
"Tell me the truth Stefan, can you honestly say that Damon will not betray you? Or me? " Caroline waited for his reply. "That's what I thought. "
"Caroline how can you do this? How can you side with that psychopath?" Elena said yelling at her former friend.
"I'm not doing this for you. I'm doing this for Stefan. And as far as I can see I'm not the only one that's sleeping with a psychopath." She said as she turned on her heel and left the boardinghouse.
Caroline walked out of the boardinghouse and lifted her head a little bit higher than before. She felt a little bit a freedom after she told everyone exactly what she felt. She smiled as she saw the faces of two of the originals waiting for her.
Rebekah was in the front seat playing with the radio. She was clicking every button in the dashboard much to Klaus irritation.
Klaus had his arms crossed over his chest. He was leaning on the black SUV turning his back on Rebekah and her incessant complaining. He heard Caroline coming closer and he smiled slightly. "Are you okay, sweetheart?"
Caroline walked towards the car slowly. "I will be." She opened the door to the back and got in.
Klaus smirked. "Rebekah lets go…"
Rebekah shut the door and in minutes they were on the road. Caroline sat back in the black SUV knowing that she had just picked a side. She looked out the window looking at the trees pass by. She looked at the different colors of the leaves and flowers. Everything around her seemed to be changing. Everything that is except for her. She was still the same Caroline as before except now she was working with people on the other side. People that she tried to kill. People that tried to kill her. She looked at the two bickering originals in front of her. Klaus was clenching the steering wheel for dear life. Rebekah was touching every button in the dashboard. She flipped every station trying to find a station that was tolerable. Caroline snickered. This was funny considering she was daggered for almost a century. Of course she couldn't find a suitable station. They arrived at the mansion a few minutes later. Caroline opened the door and walked out of the car slowly. There was a part of her that thought she shouldn't be there. She almost felt guiltily. No. She shook it off. How could that be? She turned her emotions off for a reason. She didn't want to feel any of those pesky feelings; guilt being one of them. She walked around the car and stopped. Her feet felt frozen. They were almost cemented to the floor. What was going on?
"What's wrong, love?" Klaus said as he frowned at Caroline, worry starting to saturate him.
"Klaus…I…" Caroline began.
Klaus flashed toward her. "What's wrong, Caroline talk to me. "
"Klaus, when we go and find the cure will you use Elena to make more hybrids? "
Klaus' smile slimmed into a tight smirk. "Love, I never lied to you. I can't change who I am not even for…" Klaus stopped himself before he finished his statement.
Caroline nodded. "I know…" She looked away. She felt like she was floating. Her knees felt so weak. She closed her eyes. "Klaus I think I'm gonna stay in my house tonight. "
"But, why?" Klaus wrapped his hands around her waist holding her tight. What was happening? Why did it feel like she was slipping away from his grip?
"Klaus…" Caroline leaned in to his arms. She laid her head on his shoulder. She took a deep breath. He smelled so good. She loved the way she felt safe in his arms. Funny how being in the arms of the most powerful lethal immortal being made her feel safe. "Klaus if we are going to go hiking up some obscured unknown location to find the immortal equivalent to the boogieman I'm gonna need some sleep. " She tried to give him her most flirty smile.
"Fine…but…" He growled looking away.
She rolled her eyes as she grabbed his face forcing him to face her. "Klaus…I need to pack and try to explain what's happening to my mom. "
"Okay…then let me drive you."
"No…I think I need to walk. I could use the fresh air. " She looked at the hybrid frown at her words as if she were speaking a foreign language. "What time should be ready? "
"Be ready at a quarter to. I'll have a jet waiting for us by 5:30am. " Klaus said as he leaned in and kissed her forehead. "Call me if you something."
Caroline nodded and walked home.
The walk home was longer than usual. She reached her house and sat on the seat in the porch. Memories started to come flooding back. Tyler, blood in her hands, and screams. She wrapped her arms around herself. She was trying to warm her cold skin. Her body started trembling uncontrollably. Her head was pounding. She closed her eyes. "No…" She yelled. She held her head. She shook her head, it was too much. The flashing of bits and pieces of memories past flooded her mind. Caroline started rocking back and forth. "What is happening to me?" She looked into the night sky trying to find answers to the questions in her heart. She saw Tyler in the tree line. She shook her head. What was she suppose to do? She closed her eyes. She took a deep breath and shut her mind off making all her thoughts of Tyler disappear.
"Caroline…"
Caroline turned her head towards the voice. "Stefan…what are you doing here?"
"I…I came to see if you were okay? " Stefan sat down next to his friend.
"I'm fine. "
"Caroline, when did you do it?"
"Do what?" Caroline said raising an eyebrow.
"Turn off your humanity?"
"After Elena came to tell me about Bonnie…" Caroline said as she crossed her hands and placed them on her lap.
"I'm so sorry Caroline…" Stefan said softly.
"What exactly are you sorry for Stefan?"
"Caroline…you were in pain and I wasn't there for you. "
Caroline looked at Stefan from the side of her face.
"Caroline, I am sorry." Stefan put his hand on hers.
Caroline looked at him curiously for a second. She shrugged her shoulders.
"Caroline, what are you doing with Klaus?" He said as he grinned.
"It's complicated. " Caroline said rolling her eyes.
"Then explain it to me. "
"He's a distraction. Nothing more. "
Stefan laughed.
"What is so funny, Stefan?" Caroline asked.
"It's just that's what you've been for so long….that's all."
Caroline rolled her eyes. "Very funny…"
"Caroline are you sure about him?"
"No. But lately I'm not sure about you either."
"Fair enough. Do you love him?"
Caroline started to laugh. "Stefan, don't be ridiculous this is Klaus we're talking about. He isn't capable of love. "
"Maybe not but you are. Be careful. "
"It's just fun Stefan. You should try some time."
"It is in the beginning but after a while pain…hurt…guilt…suffering….love always creeps in."
"Maybe…" Caroline said annoyed.
"Caroline does he know you have your humanity off?"
"I don't know…we don't exactly talk…" Caroline said snickering at Stefan's deep frown.
"Caroline…I don't need to know all that…"
"You asked…" Caroline said smiling. "Stefan, he's not that bad really. I know what I'm doing."
"I hope so, Caroline because we are going to a deserted island with him tomorrow. " Stefan said softly.
Caroline looked at his worried face and laughed. "What's the worst that can happen?"
Stefan looked at his friend and laughed, too. "Caroline…"
"Don't worry Stefan. I'll protect you."
Stefan rolled his eyes. He got up and kissed Caroline in the forehead. " Okay, Caroline Forbes. " He gave her a slight smile and flashed away.
Caroline woke up the next day to the sound of the buzzing of her alarm clock. She woke up and took a quick shower. She put on a pair of tight black jeans and a fitted fatigue colored tee shirt.
She finished packing her bag and looked at the clock it was 4:30am. She walked into her mom's room to find getting ready to go to work.
"Mom, can we talk?"
"Caroline you're up early."
"Yeh, listen I am going to be staying with Elena for a couple of days. She's been going through a hard time lately. "
Liz looked at her suspiciously. "Okay…call me." she looked at the clock and rushed out of the room. " I have to go to work. Have fun sweetie." She gave her mom a quick kiss and drove to work.
Caroline looked in the fridge and drank a blood bag while she waited for the big bag hybrid. She smiled as she remembered the night they spent in the night club. His hands on her thighs lifting her…touching her….kissing her neck leaving soft kisses and little nibbles down her collarbone…
Her thoughts were interrupted by a knocking in the door.
"Caroline, love…"
Caroline opens the door and finds Klaus in the doorway.
"Klaus…hey let me get my bag." Caroline said.
Klaus flashed towards her and held her close pulling her towards him. He leans in and kisses her softly. His hands reach up and grab a fistful of golden hair. She moaned slightly as she felt his tongue tease hers. She pulled him closer grabbing a handful of his black jacket.
"Klaus…if we are to go to the island to raise the old one we should go…"
Caroline broke their kiss after she heard a voice of a woman that didn't sound like Rebekah. She raised an eyebrow as she looked at the figure in her doorway. Standing there was a tall dark skinned woman with green eyes and jet black hair. She had her arms on her hips wearing a frown stumping her feet impatiently at the sight of the two vampires in an intimate embrace. Caroline looked at Klaus and waited for an explanation. She dared not day anything. Her blood was pumping rapidly. She felt a knot in her chest. What was this feeling in her chest? Annoyance? Pain? Jealousy? No can't be. She bit the side of her mouth she would not say a word until she found out who this whore was.
"Caroline…this is Esperanza. Esperanza this is Caroline." Klaus said smirking he felt the tension rise and it gave him a sick thrill. He waited for Caroline's reaction.
Caroline looked at the smirk on his face and shook her head. This was a game to him. Fine she would play along, too. "Nice to meet you. So are you one of Klaus' little hybrid slaves. If you are my bag is on the couch…" Caroline said nonchalantly. She turned and looked at the look of amusement on his face.
"Be careful vamp…" Esperanza said as she raised her hand and gave Caroline an aneurism. Caroline fell to her knees in pain. She held her head.
"Enough…" Klaus shouted as he picked Caroline up.
Klaus placed Caroline on the couch gingerly. He flashed toward Esperanza grabbed her shoulder. "Remember your place witch." His eyes were the color of midnight.
Esperanza shrugged her shoulder out of his grip and walked out of the doorway.
Klaus flashed towards Caroline and held her head with his hands. "Are you okay, love?"
"Sure…" Caroline said as she got up and fetched her bag. Caroline smirked at the look of concern on the hybrids face. "Be careful, Klaus I just may think you care…"
Klaus grabbed her shoulder and pulled her close. His lips were inches away from her ear. " I care more than I should." Klaus released her and walked out of the house.
They drove to the boardinghouse in silence. Caroline sat in the front seat with next to Klaus. She turned her head and looked at the contemplation in his face. "Klaus where's Bekah?"
Klaus snickered. "She's at the boardinghouse with Stefan."
"Really." Caroline said smiling.
"Yes, I think she wanted to start terrorizing the doppelganger early…" Klaus said smirking mischievously.
They arrived at the boardinghouse a few minutes later. Caroline got out of the SUV and felt a tightening in her chest. She had a bad feeling about this trip. She was going to lose something big. What exactly was it she didn't know. She walked into the mansion followed by Klaus and Esperanza.
"Stefan…Rebekah…" Caroline yelled.
"What is all the bloody yelling about? " Rebekah snapped.
"Sister, so glad your dressed. " Klaus said as he rolled his eyes.
"Nik what is she going here?" Rebekah said as she looked towards Esperanza.
Esperanza crossed her arms over her chest. "Nice to see you too, Rebekah." Esperanza rolled her eyes.
"Now…now …Rebekah you know why she's here. "
Rebekah picked up her backpack and walked passed Esperanza hitting her shoulder as she walked towards the door.
" Watch it…" Esperanza shrieked.
"Or what? What are you going to do about?" Rebekah said as she stepped closer to the witch.
"Rebekah…" Stefan called as he walked down the stairs.
Rebekah rolled her eyes and walked away from the witch. "What are we waiting for?"
"Damon and Elena…" Stefan said as he finished packing his backpack. "Let's go…"
Caroline snickered. She looked at the look of annoyance on the big bad' s face. "Klaus do you have the location of Silas' crypt?"
"Yes we've narrowed it down to an island off of Nova Scotia." Klaus said as he served himself a glass of scotch.
"Drinking already, Nik?" Rebekah said shaking her head.
"It's either that of drag Damon and Elena down by their spines." Klaus said growling at her retort.
"I wouldn't mind the show, Nik." Rebekah said grinning like a child in a candy store.
"Don't tempt me, sister." Klaus said grinning.
Caroline sighed. This was going to be a long trip. "Stefan, what is taking them so long? You know hybrids are not known for their patience."
"You would be the expert…" Rebekah said smiling.
Caroline rolled her eyes.
"Rebekah…" Klaus warned. " Heed your words or there will be a dagger in your future."
"You wouldn't dare!" Rebekah shrieked.
"Vampire Barbie and Barbie Klaus…what a treat." Damon said as he came down the stairs.
"What is she doing here?" Elena asked.
"What and have you lot retrieve the cure yourselves…never gonna happen." Rebekah said.
"Who's she? " Elena asked looking at Esperanza.
"That's the wicked witch of the west…" Rebekah said snickering.
"Rebekah…" Klaus said rolling his eyes.
"I'm Esperanza. You must be the doppelganger." She said shortly.
"My name is Elena…" Elena began.
"She's isn't as pretty as the last one. Katherina had a presence about her."
Rebekah snickered. "I agree…the Petrova line has watered down over the centuries."
Elena flashed over to Rebekah. Rebekah heard Elena's footsteps and grabbed her by the neck. She started to squeeze it slowly.
Caroline rolled her eyes. " Rebekah, we don't have time for this. You can kill her later. We're on a schedule. " Caroline said coldly.
Rebekah pouted. "I suppose." She released Elena making sure to drop her near the closest table.
Elena fell on the nearest side table with a thump. She grabbed her neck and rubbed it softly. Damon flashed over and gave her a once over. He helped her get up. "Thanks Caroline." Elena said softly trying to smile at her former friend.
Caroline looked at her for a second and said nothing. She wasn't ready to forgive Elena yet.
"Where's the hunter?" Esperanza asked.
"Jer…" Elena looked at Caroline quickly. She saw Caroline's eyes narrow slightly. "Jer isn't coming. Matt will sent us the pictures of his tattoo later. " Elena stepped closer to Damon.
"Fine lets get this over with, shall we?" Rebekah retorted.
They arrived in the island a few hours later. They tied the row boats near the harbor. Caroline got out of the row boat and was helped by Klaus to her surprise. She accepted his hand gratefully. The ride over was shaky at best. She thanked the gods for being a vampire. The turbulence they experienced coming to the island would make anyone want to change their minds.
Caroline smiled as she felt Klaus pull her close to him. She was close enough to feel his breath on her face. She bit her lip as she felt the warmth of his skin on hers. She smiled as his eyes lowered looking at her bit her soft red lips.
"Urg, get a bloody room Nik!" Rebekah said as she rolled her eyes.
Caroline couldn't help but laugh at Rebekah's timing.
She took a step back and wished she had a camera. The look on Klaus' face was priceless. Klaus closed his eyes as he pictured all the different ways he could kill his sister. Caroline leaned over and smacked Klaus in the ass. "Let's go…" She saw the shock on his face and flashed away before the big bad took his revenge.
Elena and Damon looked at the display in horror. "This is going to be a long trip." She said to Damon as she looked at the grin on Klaus face.
Klaus flashed ahead to find his dirty blond.
Klaus flashed over and found Caroline looking at a message on her phone. "Hey, Matt just text me the pictures of Jeremy's tattoo. " Klaus walked over and looked at the pictures in her phone. She smiled as he looked at them in fascination. She sent them to the rest of the group.
Stefan helped Rebekah up. "Does anyone know where they're going?" Rebekah said annoyed at trekking in the mud for so long.
"We're close. " Esperanza said as she flipped throughout the pictures in her phone. " The hunters mark showed a hidden passage. "
Damon and Elena followed in silence.
Klaus stayed behind Rebekah and Stefan, as he scanned the forest. He used his hybrid senses to listen to his surroundings. Caroline walked next to Stefan and Rebekah.
Elena tripped on a rock much to Rebekah' s pleasure. Rebekah chuckled.
"What the hell, Rebekah? You did that on purpose. "
"If I wanted to throw something at you it wouldn't be a bloody rock but a wooden stake in your heart." Rebekah said flinging her hair at the frown on Elena's face.
Klaus smirked at the squabbling between his sister and the doppelganger. Klaus heard a snapping of a branch. He looked towards the sound. "Rebekah look out!" Klaus flashed towards the swinging sound. He pushed Rebekah down onto the ground. Stefan flashed forward to see what the commotion was about. He froze when he saw the spiked branch swinging forward from the tree.
"Nik…" Rebekah shrieked.
Elena and Damon came following behind them. They froze when they saw Stefan walk backwards slowly. "Elena…Damon don't move." Stefan warned. Stefan jumped towards the top of the tree. Once he was a safe distance he broke the rope that was holding the branch. "Damon catch!" Stefan yelled.
Damon turned and saw the branch propelling at him. He swung to the side and held the branch. He looked to make sure Elena was nowhere in sought. He flung the branch over and threw it over the nearest cliff.
"What the hell, Nik? These are new boots. " Rebekah huffed. Klaus got up and shrugged muttering to himself.
Rebekah stomped off. Stefan jumped from the tree shaking his head. He grinned at Klaus muttering something in what seemed like ancient Norse.
Caroline stayed behind watching the kindness that Klaus was capable of and didn't know what to make of it. Klaus was muttering raising his hands. Caroline watched as she saw the hybrid rant and rave. He turned around and raised an eyebrow. "Caroline…what are you doing?" He turned to make sure no one else saw his ranting.
"Listening to you speak…what was that again?"
Klaus narrowed his eyes.
"Viking or something?" Caroline started walking towards him. She put her hands on her hips.
"Norse…" He said rolling his eyes. He started to walk away. This was going to be a long hike.
Caroline bit her laugh. She wanted to laugh but considering his mood was already starting to darken it was safer if she didn't laugh. She walked further looking at the forest around them. She walked forward and heard a soft howl. She ran up and grabbed Klaus' arm. She looked around her eyes circling around her.
"What's wrong, love?"
"I…I thought I heard something." She looked at the amused look on his face. She rolled her eyes. She took a step back and punched him in the arm. "Ass." She started to walk away and was pulled closer. He crushed his lips with hers. She closed her eyes deepening their kiss. His hands pulled her by the waist crushing her body closer to his. His hands wondered down her back squeezing her softly. She let out a soft moan as his tongue tickled and teased hers.
He flashed them to the trunk of the tree that once held the swinging branch. Her hands grabbed a fistful of his hair. She pulled his hair slightly making him hiss. He broke their kiss abruptly. He released his grip on her. She raised her eyebrow. "Someone's coming."
Caroline pouted. She fixed her shirt and rolled her eyes. "Definitely not me..." She said under her breath. Klaus smirked.
"Klaus…" Rebekah yelled. " Esperanza found the cave. Wait what were you…never mind don't want to know." Rebekah said as she flashed away.
Caroline shook her head and started to hike up the mountain. Klaus walked close behind her helping her up when she needed it. After a few minutes they reached the others.
"Where have you two been?" Damon asked wiggling his eyebrows.
Klaus clenched his teeth. Caroline leaned in and took a pocket knife from her bag. She turned to look at Damon. "Shut up, Damon!" She threw the knife towards Damon. Before he could duck it landed on his shoulder. "Ouch!" He pulled it out and threw it at Caroline. She stuck her tongue out at him and ducked. Klaus flashed towards the blade and caught it.
"Damon! Caroline!" Stefan said as he raised his hand to his face shaking it in disdain.
"Caroline, what the hell?" Elena yelled as she ran towards Damon.
Caroline rolled her eyes. She walked towards Klaus and grabbed her knife. "Thanks, I was looking for that." She put it inside her boot. Klaus walked away smiling as he headed towards the cave. Caroline followed as well as Elena and Damon.
Esperanza stood in front of the mouth of the cave. Klaus walked behind her and watched her intently.
"Where's the sword?" She asked.
Klaus took the sword from his bag and placed it in the ring of fire next to the witch.
Esperanza started to chant. She raised her hands towards the sky. A strong wind started whirling around the mouth of the cave. Lightning struck from the sky hitting the blade of the hunters sword. The vampires took a step back. Esperanza closed her eyes. Her body started shaking. The sky turned black as the wind formed a whirl wind around the ring of fire.
Caroline looked at the scene with shock in her face. She looked at the hunters sword light up. It started spinning in the air. It spun uncontrollably. The sword spun faster and faster as Esperanza's chants became louder and louder. She let out a loud shriek and then fell to the ground. The wind died down slowly. The sword stopped spinning and landed on the inside of the ring. Slowly the fire started to diminish. Esperanza slowly got up and held her aching head. Caroline flashed towards her and held her up. Esperanza's legs were still shaking from the ritual. "The sword will lead you to the old one…" She said hoarsely as she closed her eyes and passed out.
Klaus waited for the fire to extinguish before he took it. He felt a pull coming from the sword. "What the bloody hell…" He walked inside the crypt being lead by the sword. Rebekah followed her brother. Damon walked close behind keeping a safe distance. Klaus walked through the cave for what seemed like hours.
"Nik…are you sure you know where your going?" Rebekah said as she shoved cob webs away from her face. "Yuk!"
Klaus shook his head and continued the path.
Caroline looked annoyed at the entrance of the cave. She was suck babysitting this irritating witch while everyone else played Indiana Jones. She rolled her eyes when she finally heard the witch start to stir. She looked at the witch and leaned in she was muttering something.
Stefan looked at the witch start to mutter something and stepped forward.
Esperanza tried to sit up she stumbled a bit. Caroline sighed and held the witch up. She leaned in and waited for her to speak. "The cure…" She started to cough.
Caroline leaned in.
"There is only one dose…" Esperanza said softly.
Caroline's eyes opened wide. "Klaus…" She placed the witch on the nearest stone and flashed over to find Klaus.
Stefan flashed over and headed over before Caroline could warn the others.
Caroline cursed. She followed Stefan's blur into the cavern. She ran over and saw Damon wrestling Klaus with the sword. Stefan flashed over and broke Rebekah's neck.
"Rebekah…" Klaus yelled.
Caroline stood still. She looked in horror as she saw Stefan hold Klaus back as Damon started to plunge his hands inside of Klaus' chest.
Caroline had to do something. Damon was killing Klaus. She had to save him. Caroline looked around. She needed a weapon. She scanned the crypt there was nothing there except the sword. Klaus must of dropped it in the struggle. Caroline turned to see Elena standing in the corner yelling for Damon. Caroline flashed over and grabbed the sword. Caroline picked up the sword and pierced the tip of the blade deep into the back of Damon's neck.
"Caroline, what are you doing? Don't hurt Damon!" Elena yelled.
"Blondie put the sword before you hurt yourself…"Damon shrieked.
"If you don't get your hands out of the hybrid…so help me Damon!" Caroline yelled. She plunged the sword deeper into his neck.
"Damon please!" Elena yelled.
Damon closed his eyes and slowly took his hands out of Klaus chest. He raised his hands over his head. "Okay…"
"Stefan…you too." Caroline said as she poked Damon with the sword.
"Stef…"
Stefan frowned and took a step back.
Caroline slowly lowered the sword. She gave Klaus a look. "Klaus let them go. "
Klaus frowned and nodded. He took a step back and leaned on the crypt. Klaus crossed his arms over his chest.
Stefan walked up to say something to Caroline but stopped.
"I would quit while you were ahead, mate." Klaus muttered. Stefan looked at Klaus than Caroline and nodded. He dragged Damon with him. Elena ran over and gave Caroline a hard look. She waited for them to go before she dropped the sword. Caroline closed her eyes and shrugged.
Klaus walked towards Caroline. He placed his hand on her shoulder. He wanted to tell her it was going to be okay. She was safe but all he could utter was, "Are you okay, love?"
"I will be..." Caroline said softly.
