Chapter 9:

Indulge

He tried for the third time that evening to finalize the plan, but to no avail. For the last week he had been attempting to finish sketching the plans for NeuCo's new radioactive deionizer. But every time he tried, his mind would wander. In approximately 17 days, it would be Cindy and his first anniversary. He wanted to make it special. He wanted to prove to her how much he loved her. He wanted to go all out and do everything he could.

To bad Cindy was standing in the way of that.

There had never been any doubt in his mind that Cindy hadn't married him for his money. If nothing else, it made her rather uncomfortable how rich he (and be extension she) was. He understood, truly he did. Cindy's parents had cut her off when she refused to go to medical school in Boston and went to law school in California instead. She worked two jobs to put herself through school. She lived paycheck to paycheck and made it. It was amazing, awe-inspiring, and frustrating all at the same time.

All he wanted to do was spoil her. That was it. She still drove the same Lexus GS she did since her first lawyer job despite his insistence of getting her something newer. He mused about getting a bigger place, she would tell him that they had plenty of space and that it was conveniently located between their two jobs. And she still hadn't used the Centurion Black American Express Card that he had given her when they got married.

He promptly threw down the plans and marched down the hall to Cindy's office.

She didn't even look up when he entered. She didn't look up as he sat down across from her. She finally looked up when he cleared his throat.

"Yes?" She glanced up at him and then continued to write.

"So, as you are no doubt aware, our anniversary is in 17 days." She hummed in acknowledgment. "That being said, it is also our first anniversary. I am, by all accounts, the richest man in the world, with few ventures to spend great deals of my earnings on. Considering all that we have been through and the fact that we have even made it to marriage in the first place, I sincerely think-"

"JIMMY!"

He paused. "Yes?"

She sighed and rubbed her temples, her tell-tale sign of annoyance. "I love you. More then anything. You know that. However, I really need to finish this case file so please, just get to the point."

"I will be spending as much on money on you for our anniversary as I see fit." He blurted.

The two of them held each other's gazes for a moment before Cindy sighed. "Fine."

He grinned as she turned back to file. He got up, kissed her head, and then gleefully headed back to his office.

The fact that she hadn't really seen head or tails of her husband in the week leading up to their anniversary puzzled her. And made her nervous. Every time she attempted to bring up the subject of their anniversary, he changed the subject while smirking. "You'll just have to wait and see!" He told her when she confronted him about it. "It's a surprise!" Those three words did nothing to calm her nerves.

She was awaken that morning by soft kisses on her face and a gentle, "Happy Anniversary Cindy!" Yawning, she opened one eye, then the other, only to find her husband already dressed. "I made you breakfast. Get dressed and come to the kitchen!"

Sighing, she rolled herself out of bed and obliged. When she finally managed to meander down to the kitchen, she stopped in disbelief. The fact that there was piles of foods all over the kitchen was nothing really out of the ordinary, but the fact that her husband was the one who was standing over the griddle, spatula in hand in a tie was. "What's all this?"

"Breakfast!" He said proudly as he handed her a plate of chocolate chip pancakes.

She smiled as she took them to sit down at the island. "Very impressive." She acknowledged as she took a bite. He grinned as he sat down beside her.

"Aren't you heading to work?" She asked him after she had gotten dressed and wondered back to the kitchen only to see him still in his sleep pants typing on his laptop.

He tore his gaze away from his computer to smile at her. "Not until later." She raised an eyebrow and he chuckled. "Just having a bit of a lie in that's all. I'll see you later. Have a good day."

She walked over to him and kissed him. "Happy Anniversary. I love you."

"I love you to." She turned and walked out, missing the mischievous glint in her husband's eyes.

"Uh, Cindy? You might want to come out here."

Pausing her writing, the District Attorney hit the intercom button on her phone, "Because why?"

For the first time Cindy could remember, Margaret seemed tongue-tied. "Well, I- you see, Jimmy-" She grave a frustrated groan. "Please?"

When she reached the lobby, she couldn't believe her eyes. Yellow roses seemed to cover every surface. The rest of the office had come out to see what was going on, their faces raging from confusion to amusement and the DA herself was quite speechless.

"Miss Cindy," The delivery man said, handing her a card with a flourish.

Alexz slid up to her, practically shaking in excitement. "Its from Jimmy right?"

"I sincerely hope so." Cindy responded as she opened the card. "Happy Anniversary to the love of my life. You're my everything." Cindy read aloud. She flushed a light pink but smile, until she looked up at all the flowers and frowned again. "What are we going to do with all these?"

In the end, it took Margaret, Alexz, Jade, Morgana, Cindy, and the help of the head of security, Jakob, over 40 minutes to distribute the bouquets around the District Attorney's office. It seemed no matter where you went, from the check-in lobby, to one in each of the ADA's offices, and of course, several in Cindy's. Alexz grinned like the Cheshire Cat the whole time, while Cindy just shook her head and sent off a text to her husband.

Overboard much dear? But thank you. The flowers were gorgeous.

Just like my wife;) Came the response.

The third surprise came at two o'clock that afternoon. "Yes?" Cindy inquired when there was a knock at her door.

"Ma'am," the delivery boy said as he handed her a square box with the words "Dolce and Gabana" printed on it.

"He did not." Cindy muttered in disbelief as she tore the package open. "Wear this tonight. Pick you up at five thirty," She read the card aloud before moving aside the tissue paper. The pale blue material seemed to sparkle against the white background and Cindy gasped as she pulled out the long baby blue dress she had been obsessing over for weeks. She had been wanting it more then anything, but was unable to justify the price tag and she had pointed out to Jimmy when they were out and about one Saturday. She couldn't believe he remembered.

Thankful for the amount of beauty products she kept in her private bathroom, Cindy emerged at 5:20, her hair down in gentle curls around her face, her makeup fresh, and Jimmy's dress hugging every curve of her body.

"You look amazing."

She quickly turned to see her husband standing in her office, a red rose in his hand, and wearing his favorite Armani suite, smiling at her.

"How long have you been here?"

"Just arrived." He offered her his arm. "Shall we?" Tongue-tied, she nodded. The moved through the building, ignoring the looks that they got (Jade even gave her a thumbs-up).

"Jimmy, this is to much." Cindy objected as her husband pulled out her chair at their private table at Per Se.

He simply smiled as he took his place opposite of her. "You did promise."

"Well I know but-"She paused to look through her menu, then shook her head. "But-"

"I hope you're not getting mad at me now," he interrupted. "Because there's one more surprise." She just stared at him and he smiled. "Can't a guy spoil his favorite girl?" He paused for the two of them to order as their waiter suddenly appeared and turned back to her. "Cin, I understand where you're coming from, I really do. But I want to indulge you. I can afford to."

"I know." She paused to fiddle with her wine glass. "It's just… hard for me. Going from no money to all the money in the world. I don't want people to think that's why I married you."

He chuckled. "Trust me babe, no one thinks that."

She seemed relieved at that as she leaned back in her chair. "Oh, well, that's good."

He grinned. "Now that that's placated, can we please enjoy the rest of the evening?"

He seemed almost to be bouncing in his seat as they pulled into the underground garage following dinner. "Jimmy," She said as they rounded the corner to their parking spots, "What in the world are you-?" She stopped when she saw what was in her parking space. "No. Freakin'. Way."

He seemed to almost burst. "Yes!" They got out of the car and he followed her to her new sky blue Lamborghini Roadster.

"Jimmy, what is this?"

"Your new car," She opened her mouth and he cut her off, "We both know yours is twenty seconds away from a nuclear meltdown. I need my wife to be safe." He smirked in self-satisfaction as he watched her run her hand over the exterior. "Now then, what do you say we take this baby for a spin?"

"That was, was, exhilarating!" Cindy said with glee as they pulled over to the side of the road.

Jimmy merely shook his head. "How you managed to not get pulled over is beyond me."

Cindy's eyes twinkled. "Pure skill. Oh!" She reached for her bag, "That reminds me, I have your present to!" She dug around before plopping a square box on his lap.

He eyed it cautiously before carefully ripping the paper. When he opened the box, he simply stared. She eyed him nervously. "Where did you get this?" He whispered.

"A lot of tracking. Probably went to every pawn shop in Dallas and then some. Long day."

Gingerly, as if holding a baby, he picked up the old pocket watch that lay inside. "My heart broke when Grandma Neutron said she sold it. It was the only thing that I remember from my grandfather." He opened it up to see his grandfather's name engraved on the inside. He turned to his wife, tears in his eyes, "Thank you."

She simply gave him a smile before leaning into kiss him before pulling back and leading her new car back down the highway.

Happy Anniversary indeed.
