Once again, it's taken me a million years to update. I apologize, but hope you enjoy.
Quil, who is sitting across from us at the table held out his hand and said to Jake, "Hey man, give me a roll."
Jacob picked up a roll and a grin crossed over his face. Before Quil could react Jacob hucked the roll across the table nailing Quil in the forehead before the roll bounced off and fell to the floor. Jacob was laughing so hard, and Quil shot him a glare before bending and picking up the roll.
I only watched with what I'm sure was a look of disgust as he brought the food up to his mouth. "You're not going to actually eat that are you?" I blurted out before I could stop myself and felt my face begin to heat up.
Beside me I hear Jacob laugh even louder and Quil looked at me with a small grin before shrugging. "No wasting." Is all he said before taking a large bite out of the roll. Embry next to him began to laugh just as loud as Jacob.
I just rolled my eyes and looked away. A couple seats away was Emily and she was looking at me with a small smile on her face. She glanced at the two boys who were now bantering then turned back to me. "How do you like the food?"
Embarrassingly enough I hadn't even taken a bite of any of the food on my plate. "Oh it's great, thank you for letting me come."
Before should could ask me anything else I took a bite of the potato salad on my plate. A small amused smile crossed her face and she turned to talk to Sam next to her.
Looking around I saw all the guys laughing, joking, and eating the mountain of food each have on their plates. Emily must have made a platter of sandwhiches at least a foot high.
Glancing over I saw that she was looking at me and I immediately felt awkward. But decided to say something to her anyway, "Do you always cook meals like this?" I really hope that she didn't take it a wrong way and think I was being rude.
Instead she just looked down the table at all the boys and smiled. "Just on the weekends." She turned back to look at me but shot a glance over my shoulder before smiling. "Are you going to be coming around more often?" She paused and I could feel myself tense slightly, and I didn't know why. Did she not want me around? "It would just be nice to have another woman around, not too many of us here."
That made me feel a lot better but I still didn't quite know how to answer. "I don't think so." A slight crease appeared between her brows so I continued. "I really only came today because I was left at Paul's house last night and thought my friend would be here, but he's not."
She nodded and gave me another smile. "You are always welcome here Haley." She turned away to talk with Sam again and I was left sitting in shock. Here was a woman who had just met me, telling me I was always welcome in her home.
What was Emily trying to get at. Telling Haley that she could come here whenever she wanted. She couldn't just do that, especially without consulting me.
I could feel my blood beginning to boil and I glared at Emily as she looked down the table at me with a smile.
The whole time we've been here I couldn't help myself and continuously had an eye on Haley. I really didn't appreciate the way that Jacob felt he could just put his hands on her and flirt with her whenever he wants. That is not the way this goes.
Jacob at the very moment looked up at me and shot me a grin, to which I could only glare back. He just thought it was funny and turned to continue his conversation with Quil, Embry, and Haley.
Haley threw her head back and laughed at something Embry had said and the boys all laughed along with her. There in that moment it truly looked like she belonged here with us, and it made my chest ache. I didn't want a stupid imprint.
Jared from next to me slapped me on the back and nodded over in Haley's direction. "Emily likes her." Emily was once again talking to Haley, this time asking more about what she likes and school. Awe man, she's still in school.
All I could hope for was that this lunch would end and she could go home. I needed to get away from her for a while. The food was almost gone and everyone was just talking anyway.
Haley was looking around and looked a little uncomfortable. Her eyes caught mine and I saw them widen, but instead of turning away she gave me a small smile. Maybe she was warming up to me.
Just then Emily stood and told all of us to clean the table while she and Haley went to the living room.
Both of the women then walked out the door. This was so much different than the usual lunches and dinners we have. Sam then stood up and grabbed a couple plates with a laugh. "You heard her, clean up."
The rest of the guys were grumbling but started to clean anyway. Not that they had a choice. Standing and grabbing my plate I went to the kitchen. Embry and Quil were already in there and both turned to me. "Thanks a lot Paul. We wouldn't be cleaning if you didn't bring Haley." Embry said as he finished washing a plate.
I went over and placed my plate on the large stack of dishes he was already washing. "I didn't hear you bitching when you were hitting on her earlier."
He quickly turned to me with wide eyes and looking scared, "I wasn't Paul. I swear. I was just trying to be nice."
Giving him one last look I turned to walk out and heard Quil laughing at Embry. Out in the dining room there was Sam, Jared, and Jacob.
When they saw me Sam came up and slapped me on the back. "Haley seems like a nice kid." I turned and glared at him as both Jared and Jacob laughed. "Emily really likes her."
He was just trying to make a save on what he had just said but it was already out there, he thought she was too young. "I get it Sam, she's young, she's still in high school." As I ran a hand over my face I felt the anger die away but it was replaced with a feeling of defeat. "Jesus Christ, what am I going to do?"
I look up and Jacob had on a big shit eating grin. "Well, she is my age." Sam and Jared laughed as I felt the anger roll over me. The kid was going to get it. Jacob quickly turned and ran out the door as I tore after him.
We were sitting on the couch with Emily asking just about every question there was. But it wasn't bad, it was sort of nice to have someone wanting to know about me, and trying to get to know me. Especially one of the female variety.
After a good fifteen minutes the guys slowly started trickling back into the living room. All of them had now joined us, except for Jacob and Paul, which caused me to worry a little.
I looked over to Embry who was sitting on a chair a couple seats away. "Where's Jake?"
He just laughed and looked over to Jared, who as smiling as well. "He and Paul had to go do something outside, they should be back soon." Looking around the rest of the guys had the same look of amusement at the question I had just asked, making me a little worried.
Standing up I started making my way over to the door. Just as I about reached it Quip jumped up and came over to me. "Where you going?"
I went to go around him, "I'm just going to go check on Jake, see if he needs help." Quil looked as if he were going to say something else but Sam coughed getting his attention. So before he could say anything else I slipped away and out the door.
The sky was cloudy and it looked as if it were going to rain soon. But I couldn't see either of the boys. A little further down the driveway there was a trail, maybe they had gone down that.
Standing there I debated whether to check the trail or not, I didn't have a jacket, so if it started to rain I would be out of luck. Deciding to chance it I made my way to the trail.
The trail was narrow and barely even a trail. There were large rocks, bushes, and branches everywhere. After walking along the trail for a few minutes it started to rain. Maybe this wasn't a good idea. Not only was it raining, but the trail was really dark and spooky looking.
Taking a few more steps I decided to stop at a large boulder. Looking around I couldn't even tell if someone had taken this trail or not. "Jake!" I called out and sat, waiting for an answer.
It was really starting to rain, but I was still concerned that Jake was out here in this as well. I couldn't hear anything but the rain. Looking all around I could only see the trees and bushes surrounding me.
"Jacob, you out there?" Again, there was no answer. I guess they didn't take this trail, with my luck they are already back at the house and I'm just standing out here in the rain like an idiot.
With a sigh I turned and ran smack dab into something making me let out a loud scream. Backing away quickly I stumbled over a large rock and fell hard to the ground.
A sharp pain shot through my wrist where I landed on it, but the only thing I could think of was that I was going to be attacked. So, ignoring the pain in my wrist I brought my hands up to cover my head.
"What the hell are you doing?" A deep, growling voice asked. And I knew that voice. Looking up from where I was curled up on the ground I saw Paul, standing there with a look of confusion, mixed with anger.
I looked at him then looked at our surroundings, it was only us two. "I was looking for Jake. They said that you two were doing something out here."
My clothes, or rather Paul's clothes, were beginning to soak through with the rain. Paul's face still looked angry but he took a deep breath and his face went blank. "He's back at the house." He took a couple steps toward me and held out a hand. "We should be getting back there."
I looked at the hand that was extended out to me. Giving him a small smile I reached out a grabbed it. He gave a pull and a sharp agonizing pain shot through my arm and I let out a loud hiss. He quickly released my hand and I fell back to the ground.
The pain in my wrist was pretty bad. I curled my wrist up against my chest and let out a deep breath. It was really throbbing now. "What happened?" He asked as he took another step closer and examined me.
"When I fell earlier I landed on it. It hurts, I don't know what's wrong with it." I looked down at my wrist and it looked a little off.
Paul looked like he noticed the same thing. He took a few more steps and came up behind me. Putting his arms underneath mine he pulled me to my feet.
After making sure I was steady he let go and came around to face me. He looked down at my wrist then back up at me as if he were going to say something. But going against it he just reached down and grabbed my arm bringing it up to look at it.
"What are you doing?' I asked as I tried to pull away, but he didn't let go and just brought it closer, turning it to look from another angle.
Finally after another minute or so he let it go and I brought it back against my chest. "It looks like it's broken." He told me then looked around us. "We should probably bring you to go get it checked out."
Before I could say anything he had turned around and was walking back down the trail towards the house. After a moment I followed after him. As we began to reach the house I realized how cold and wet I was.
Paul stepped up on to the porch and held the door open for me. I looked down at myself and shook my head at the man. "I'm drenched Paul, I don't want to drip all over Emily's house."
He just scoffed and held the door open even further. "Emily isn't going to care, trust me." I have him one last skeptical look before walking into the house. "She's definitely had worse." He said as he followed after me.
When we entered the living room Emily immediately stood and walked over to me. "What happened to you?" She asked as she looked over my soaked attire.
"Well it started raining right after I went out to look for Jacob." Jake looked over at me and gave me an apologetic look.
"Sorry Haley." He told me then stood up to come and check on me. "I didn't know you went to look for me until I got back, but Paul was still out there so I thought you ran into him." He came closer and noticed how I'd been cradling my arm. "What happened?"
Paul cut in before I could answer. "It's broken." He said briefly, and turned to Sam and Emily. "We are going head out. I'm going to take her to the doctor."
My head shot over to look at him, but he refused to look at me. I guess I was leaving. Emily made her way closer and pulled me in for a small hug which took me by surprise. "I'm glad that you came today Haley."
In response I gave her a small smile and nodded. "Thank you for letting me. Your food was really good."
Jacob stepped forward and gave me a much larger hug. "And I am sorry that we didn't get to hang as much." He let me go and took a step back. "Next time, just me and you Hales."
I smiled at the grinning boy and took a step toward the door where Paul was waiting. "Sounds like a plan."
Paul had on yet again another angry face which I chose to ignore. "Please do come by again." Emily said, but when I turned to look instead of looking at me she was giving Paul a pointed look. He seemed to ignore it as he placed his hand on my back and lightly pushed me out the door.
As soon as we were outside he didn't wait for me and went and jumped into his truck, starting it, all before I even reached it.
I tried to open the truck door with my left hand, but it was not working. I couldn't push the button with my thumb. Paul seemed to let me try a few more times before he finally took pity, leaning across the seat and pushing my door open.
Before I could put my seat belt on he was pulling out of the driveway and heading down the road. His truck was once again freezing and filled with awkward silence.
"You don't need to bring me to a doctor," I told him, trying to break the silence.
That wasn't the best conversation starter if the look on his face was anything to go by. "You need to go to the doctor." He told me sternly, almost as if he were scolding me.
"What I meant was that my sister could take me." His jaw clenched tight at the mention of my sister taking me, so I continued. "She knows all my insurance information and all that."
That seemed to ease his mind a little, his jaw loosened and he gave a nod. "If she's not there, I'm taking you to the hospital."
I nodded my head agreeing to the terms. He didn't seem to like the thought too much himself. He had that angry Paul look still in place as we drove the rest of the way I'm silence.
As we neared my house I could feel my anxiety building up. I really just wanted to get away from the intense man next to me. The only thing I could think of was that I was hoping her car would be in our driveway.
But of course, as luck would have it, our driveway was empty. Paul pulled up to our house and looked over at me. "Guess that means I'm taking you." I let out a sigh and looked back to my house, Damn you Karly.
