The ride home was oddly quiet, and Lisbon couldn't think of a reason why. Jane almost always had something to say. She thought the day had been great. Despite the way it started and the surprise visit from her boss, she truly had a good day. It was different, what happened today shook up her normal routine. In fact the last few weeks had done that. So what could have Jane in such a fowl mood?
"Jane, are you okay?" She asked.
Jane turned from the window to look at her. He gave her a small smile and said, "Yeah, I'm good."
Lisbon didn't buy it for a minute, but let it drop. She would get him to talk somehow, someway. He wasn't going anywhere anytime soon, so she had plenty of time to get it out of him.
She pulled into her apartment complex and parked. Jane got right out, walked to her door and pulled it open. Neither one said a word as they walked to her door. When she finally got the door unlocked, Lisbon walked inside assuming Jane would follow. But he didn't.
"Jane, what's wrong? I know there's something, so just tell me." Lisbon said, trying to be patient even though his silence was just about killing her.
He finally looked her in the eye. It seemed he was searching for something there. "It's nothing to worry about right now. We can discuss it tomorrow."
"Wait. You're not staying the night?"
"Not tonight."
Well, she hadn't seen that coming. Lisbon grabbed a hold of one hand and dragged him inside. "Fine. You don't have to stay, but you are going to tell me what's bothering you. Right now."
She drug him to the couch and sat down. "It can wait Lisbon..."
"No, it can't. Now talk." She said crossing her arms.
He let out a long sigh and asked, "Why didn't you tell me you have a boyfriend or at least have a date?"
A boyfriend? She wanted to laugh but the look on his face told her he was being completely serious. "And what has you thinking that?"
"I heard your phone call earlier."
"What phone call?"
*Flashback*
Lisbon's phone rang just shortly after Bertram left, she was in need of a coffee refill so she accused herself into the kitchenette to take the call.
Just before Lisbon answered her phone Jane saw a strange look cross her face and was immediately intrigued. He gave her a minute head start and then followed.
"Listen, I'm sorry I forgot about our plans..." He heard her say. She had plans? What plans? When and with who?
"Yes, of course I still want to come! I know I have rescheduled three times...you know how work is."
It was silent for a few minutes, and Jane assumed she was listening to the other person. How could he have missed this? She had a date with someone didn't she? And he hadn't noticed. He noticed everything when it involved Lisbon. She did say she forgot, so there wasn't really anything he could have picked up on. But that was no excuse. He should have known.
"I will be there, I promise."
She sounded so sincere and loving. He had never heard her speak that way to anyone. Recently she started talking to him that way on occasion but never to anyone else. He decided he couldn't take it anymore, plus it sounded like the conversation was coming to an end and he couldn't risk her finding him listening, so he knew he had to leave.
Jane sat down on his couch again, his good mood gone. How could this have happened? He knew the answer of course. He had waited to long. Waited to long to get his act together and do something about his feelings. And now she was making plans for herself and another guy.
Jane saw her come back into the bullpen still on the phone, and was able to hear her parting words.
"I'm sorry, I really am. I'll make it up to you, it'll be worth it...Bye." And with that she hung up the phone and came back to sit by Jane.
"What a day huh?" She said.
"Mmm..." He said, still processing the conversation he heard. He decided he needed some time away. He needed some time alone to prepare himself for possible heartbreak. His attack would do.
"Jane, where are you going?"
"My attack. See ya later Lisbon."
He laid down on his makeshift bed and stared at the ceiling. Would he risk her happiness for his? The obvious answer would be no, but he was known to be selfish at times.
Jane knew he wouldn't give up on her that easily but if there was someone else in her life that made her happy, he was going to have to deal with that. Sometime he was going to ask her about it and if his suspicions were true he would let her be. But he would also let her know that when it went south, because he knew it would, he would be there for her anyway she needed.
*End of Flashback*
"Jane, you of all people should know not to jump to conclusions so fast." Lisbon told him.
Jane sat up a little straighter and asked, "So you don't have a boyfriend or at least a date?"
"What if I did? What would you do?"
"Nothing. I want you to be happy Lisbon. And if you are happy with this other man then so be it. I won't stand in the way." His eyes meet hers again but this time with determination. "But you must know, I won't give up. I will be waiting for the day it falls apart."
Lisbon stayed quiet. She found she was touched by his words and could see how much it was hurting him to think he was loosing her before he even got her.
"You should have told me Lisbon. I wouldn't have...interfered, if I knew." Jane said looking away again.
Lisbon captured his face in her hands and made him look at her. It was time to end his suffering. "Jane, I do not have a boyfriend."
"Then who where you talking too? What did you mean when you said you forgot about your plans and that you would make it up to them later...?
"Jane! Calm down, take a deep breath." She didn't remove her hands from his face as she moved so that she was kneeled on the floor between his legs.
He closed his eyes, took a deep breath and leaned his forehead against hers. "Would you just tell me what's going on? Put me out of my misery?"
"I do not have a boyfriend." She repeated. "I was on the phone with one of my brothers. Tommy to be exact."
His head jerked away from hers and in the process her hands lost contact with his face. "What? You mean I have been driving myself mad for no reason?"
"Yes. I told you not to jump to conclusions." She said smiling.
He pulled her to him then and kissed her with a new found passion. He never felt so relived in his life. Lips moved in sync and tongues battled for dominance as the kiss continued to increase. Unfortunately the need for air got to be too much and they had to break apart.
"I think I should make you jealous more often if this is the response I get." Lisbon said after she got her breath back and was able to think straight.
Jane chuckled, "So what were you talking about? Because I only heard one side of the conversation and I obviously took it wrong, so..."
"I forgot my brothers and I kind of planned a small family get together. Its this weekend, and he was calling to make sure I was coming. I canceled on them three times already and I can't do it again. I've worked so hard to repair my relationship with my brothers and I can tell every time I cancel or say I can't come, they pull back a little."
He nodded understanding and then asked, "And what did you mean about making it up to them? Because when I heard that, my mind went to a completely different place...if you know what I mean?" Jane asked, a faint blush creeping over his cheeks.
"Yes, I can see where you might have gotten the wrong impression. I was actually hoping...that you would come with me? I asked Tommy if I could bring someone, since all my brothers have wives that will be coming. I didn't want to be left out I guess. And he said if I was bringing you, and if you caused any trouble he would never forgive me. I told him I would make it up to him if you did." Lisbon explained.
All Jane heard was the invitation to come, he was too happy to have heard much else. "You want me there? Really?"
Lisbon looked down at their intertwined hands and said, "Yeah, it could be fun. And you would be a distraction and a buffer for any fighting that may occur. Because there most likely will be some, knowing my family."
Jane put a finger under her chin and hinted that she should look at him. Which she did, with a tiny smile. "I would be honored Teresa."
"Good. But do you think we could refrain from telling them about us? At least until we know where this is going ."
"And just where is this going?" Jane asked serious again.
"Well, I hope somewhere beyond what we are doing now. Whatever this is that we are doing. I mean we haven't talked about it, much less been on a date. I know it hasn't been very long but I hope there is something more here. I know there is for me..."
"I'm glad we are on the same page then." Jane said detangling himself from her and heading to the door.
"Where are you going?" She asked rushing after him, confused. They were finally talking about things and what does he do? He gets up and leaves.
"Home."
"But why? I understood why you wouldn't stay before, but now you know. So why not stay? And you don't have a car, you won't get far. Its cold. " Lisbon said.
"I would love nothing more then to stay. But as you just pointed out, we haven't been on a date yet. It wouldn't make sense for me to stay. And I guess I will have to call a cab." Jane said stepping away from the door.
"Um, okay. But that didn't stop you before..." She tried to tell him but he was already on the phone with the cab company.
Jane finished with the cab company and laughed when he saw the disappointment on Lisbon's face. He came to stand right in front of her. "Lisbon, would you like to meet me for coffee before work tomorrow?"
"You don't drink coffee Jane."
"I know. But you do, Love."
"Yes, I do enjoy my coffee." Lisbon agreed with a smile and wrapped her arms around his waist. He was thinking of her and it was sweet, trying to make up for not staying.
Jane hadn't been this nervous about a date since the first time he asked his wife out. "So is that a yes?"
"Of course it's a yes. I can't believe you have to ask twice."
"Good. Meet me at the Starbucks down the street from the CBI at say...8:30? We can get our drinks then walk to work."
"Sounds good." Lisbon couldn't help feeling a little giddy at the thought of this date. Granted it wasn't much and they were heading to work but it was something. A good start.
They stayed wrapped around each other until they heard the cab honk and Lisbon finally had to let him go.
"I'll see you tomorrow." Jane said walking to the door again.
Just before he made it, Lisbon was able to snatch his hand and stop him. "Are you sure you won't stay?"
"Yes, I'm sure."
"Fine. Suite yourself." She said with a shrug and let him go.
"See you tomorrow."
Lisbon nodded, "Yeah, tomorrow."
With that, Jane got in the cab and Lisbon watched it disappear down the street. Maybe he would come to his senses and come back, but she doubted it. She would just have to suck it up and prepare for a crappy nights sleep. She was definitely going to need that coffee in the morning.
It was 8:45 and Jane was worried. Lisbon wasn't here yet, it wasn't like her to be late. It was only fifteen minutes but it still worried him.
"I'm here! Sorry I'm late." Lisbon said sitting down across from him.
"It's okay. But I will admit, you had me worried."
"I missed my alarm believe it or not. I didn't get much sleep..." Lisbon said with a playful glare.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah..." Jane got up and went to order their drinks. A White Chocolate Mocha for Lisbon and Jane ordered a China Green Tips Brewed Tea for himself. He also took the liberty of ordering them each an apple fritter, knowing his date probably didn't eat breakfast.
When he got back, they fell into easy conversation. Mostly talking about the upcoming weekend and what was to be expected.
"We leave early on Friday and will come home Sunday night. My brothers wanted the most time possible and so did I. I had to take Friday off of work."
"Well you didn't give me much time to do the same Lisbon. It's already Wednesday."
"I'm sure it will be fine. You are just a consultant." Lisbon said.
Jane brought a hand up to cover his heart and pretended to be hurt when he said, "What do you mean I'm just a consultant?"
"Jane, you know what I mean. And you also know that it's not true. You are my partner. Always have been. And I don't see that changing anytime soon so, you always will be." Lisbon said with a shrug. That wasn't supposed to have sounded so cliché, but it was to late to take back now.
She felt his hand lay atop hers and heard him say, "That was awful sweet Lisbon. Who knew you had it in you!"
"Shut up Jane." She said and playfully swatted his hand away. "I can be sweet when I want to be. Maybe if someone would stop being such a pain in the ass all the time, he would see that side of me more."
When their drinks were gone it was nearly time for work. Jane ordered another coffee for Lisbon and they left hand in hand.
Go on a Starbucks Date-check.
A/N: Hope you liked it! Please let me know! And I would also like to ask all you followers a question. I'm trying to get a head start on my next story and Im having a hard time deciding which way to go. I have a few options and would like to know what you guys would like to read. So here goes...
Story 1: An AU story based on a book/movie I love! Its called Something Borrowed. Not many people like the movie(I do) but the book is so good. It's a little complicated so I would suggest looking up the plot and reading a little about it before you say no! If you would like to know more about what I had in mind send me a PM. I would be more then happy to explain!
Story 2: Write an epilogue or second part for my story Days of Wine and Roses Continued.(I will eventually, just not sure if I want to do it next)
Story 3: A letter is written and a decision must be made...Its set after Red John is caught and Jane is trying to figure out what he wants to do. He decides leaving is the best option. Lisbon writes him a letter and tells him not to open it until his plane lands. I got the idea from a song. (most likely will be a one shot)
Story 4: Red John or another person has made a threat on Lisbon's life just as her and Jane are moving forward in their relationship. Jane thinks its his fault and tries to push her away. Again I got the idea from a song. It's about a couple breaking up and spending one last glorious night together...only it's not.
I have so many ideas! But those are the options for now...I'm leaning towards the first or the last but I would like to know what you guys want! Thanks! Again send me a PM if your a little confused! I think I would be. Sorry!
Up next- Go on a Road Trip/Go to the beach. (Lisbon family time)
