Chapter 9: Capable of Anything

It was early afternoon, the sun floating high in the sky as rays of light shined through the bedroom window. Elena looked over, watching as the light burned into her carpet. After yesterday, she hadn't felt like leaving the confides of her room. Stefan compelling her, so that she couldn't speak to Damon and then Damon turning up. It was like he knew. He wanted to check on her because deep down he knew something was wrong, and unfortunately he was right. It was a disaster waiting to happen. She was heartbroken. She didn't want Damon to think she hated him, despised him because she didn't and she never would. She just wanted to tell him everything that had happened. She wanted to scream it from the rooftops but she was mute. Hearing the buzzing oh her phone, she jumped and looked over, her heart bouncing. Was it? Reaching over slowly, she checked the caller ID and sighed. It was Caroline. Pressing answer, she held the phone to her ear.

"Hi." Elena spoke, her voice quiet as she looked around her room.
"Hey there Chica! I am bored out of my mind and wanted to see if you fancied going shopping with me and Bonnie? I need to pass the time." Caroline laughed.

"No." She cleared her throat, "I'll pass on that today."
"Awh no! Elena, come on! It will be SO much fun! You, me and Bonnie! Shopping! Come on! We can even get our nails done."
"Caroline, no. End of. I'm not leaving the house today. I'm staying in. Goodbye."

Elena hung up and bit her lip. She knew it was rude, cruel even, but she didn't have the patience today for anything. She didn't want to talk to anyone. She wanted to be alone in the silence before Mr Compeller shows up again to melt what was left of her brain and imagination. Sliding down her bed, she pulled the covers over her head and inhaled. Oh how she loved each day in her life.

Caroline made her way up the driveway, walking as fast as she could as she banged on the door and crossed her arms, her mind ready to implode at any second. Waiting for a few seconds, she looked up as the door opened and Damon looked at her with confusion. Giving him a look, she stormed past him and into the house as she helped herself to a glass of bourbon. Frowning, he closed the door and walked in slowly, watching her.

"Well sure Blondie. Why don't you just help yourself?" Damon scoffed, shaking his head.
"We need to talk." She slammed down his glass, causing him to wince as he rubbed his ears.
"I gathered that from your impatient entrance."
"Its Elena." Caroline ran her fingers through her hair.
"What about Elena?" He frowned, worry in his voice as he tilted his head.

"Well, she's not herself?" She bit her lip, pacing back and forward as she was trying to think it over in her head. Did it make sense? Was Elena acting differently? Surely Damon saw it to. She was distant, upset and somewhat depressed. Pouring herself another drink, she downed it and looked over to Damon who was watching patiently, "She's been acting really strange lately."

"How so? She can be a strange character when she wants to be." Damon smiled with a shrug, rubbing his chin.
"YOU know she isn't acting like herself Damon. She's distant. Especially towards you and she never was."
"Uhm, we had a fight so it's normal."
"No. You know what I'm talking about Damon. She's is NOT Elena at the moment." Caroline stressed, rubbing her hands together.

"Yeah, yeah I know." Damon sighed, drinking from his glass, "She seems…fragile lately. More quiet and locked away."
"Exactly and sure Elena isn't blasting with joy and out of her comfort zone."
"Ha!" He laughed, pointing at her, "You didn't see her the night of Jeremy's birthday party!"
"Fine, but she is different and MAYBE…something is wrong that she doesn't want to tell us?"
"Like what?"

"What are you two talking about?" Stefan questioned, walking along the hall as he came to a stop and looked in at them.
"Stefan, have you noticed anything different about Elena?" Caroline raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms.
"As in?" He licked his lips, rocking from side to side as Damon frowned, watching him.
"She's been acting off lately?"

"No. She's been pretty much the same to me." Stefan smiled, "Don't worry about Elena. She's fine! I'm sure she's just having an off day or something-"
"Stef-" Damon started.
"Anyway, I've got to be somewhere, so I'll see you later."

"Huh." Damon bit into his lip, swiping his tongue over to soothe it as he watched Stefan's retreating figure. He walked out, closing the door behind him as he drained the last of his bourbon and filled it straight away, his mind swirling with thoughts. It was all a bit too weird. Elena acting oddly and Stefan thinking she was alright. It seemed like last night she was trying to say something, but couldn't. He looked at Caroline as she raised an eyebrow, "Now THAT was weird."

"What, with Stefan?" Caroline questioned, biting her lip.
"Yeah. He seems a bit too calm about it all. Like it isn't a big deal, but why isn't it to him?"
"You think Stefan has something to do with this? But he wouldn't, he loves her. He's her epic love…no offense."

"None taken." He rolled his eyes, pacing, "I know it has something to do with him, it has to."
"Why are you so sure?" She sighed, licking her lips.

"It was maybe a couple of weeks back now or longer, maybe not even that, but Elena came down here in tears after being with Stefan. She was in a terrible state and she was telling me how she felt suffocated. I didn't understand, but then on the night of Jeremy's party…it just seemed to all come out in a blur. They were even fighting then because he said something about me and she jumped to my defence."

"Wow, she really is acting weird."
"Oh shut up. You want to help Elena or not? We have to come up with a plan, got it!?"
"Yes sir." She saluted him, pouting.

The wind blew against the curtains, sending air around the room as the brunette moaned and stirred, rolling onto her side. Opening her eyes, she yawned and leaned up on her elbows, looking at the window. Well the weather was still looking good. She must have dozed off again without knowing. Pushing herself up from the bed, she stretched her arms over her head and made her way over to the window. She got enough air, now she could shut the window. As she moved forward to shut the window, Stefan jumped in, causing her to jump back in fright, holding her hand over her chest. What the hell? Swallowing, she watched him as he turned and closed the window, a smile on his face. Oh wonderful, just what she wanted. Stefan to come and annoy her when she'd REALLY prefer Damon.

"It's alright Elena, I'm going to make this quick." Stefan smirked, cupping her face in his hands.
"Elena Gilbert," He started, tilting his head, "You are going to love me and only me, do you understand?"
"I understand." Elena responded on cue, her eyes on his as he laughed.
"Hmm, nice and easy. I want you to come to the Halloween dance with me, alright?"

Leaning down, he pressed his lips against hers as she responded with light pressure. Pulling back, he smiled and jumped out of the window. Elena watched as he left and wiped her hand against her lips, frowning in disgust. Lucky she took vervain this morning when she had the chance. There was no way she was letting him get to her anymore.

Running her fingers through her hair, she pushed her hair back and took a deep breath. The Halloween dance? It was going to be SO much fun. Falling back onto the bed, she stared at the ceiling and fisted the sheets in her hands. She could do this. She was Elena Gilbert and she was capable of anything that was thrown her way.
