After yesterday's disastrous date Kurt certainly wasn't feeling up to the next one. Thank God he'd got Michael out of the way early, and now he might be able to actually enjoy himself this evening. He'd spent much of the day ignoring the comments of the New Directions, who had found out through Mercedes about the auditions. Puck had received the news with delight, and joined Santana in making as many suggestive comments as possible throughout the day. Brittany, Tina and Quinn were quite excited by the prospect, and Kurt was assured that the next round should definitely involve getting the approval of his friends. Kurt thought it was actually quite a good idea, and told them he would try and suggest it to Sue, although he wouldn't be surprised if she'd mapped the whole thing out already and shot him down without even hesitating.
Finn had been indignant that their parents had found out before him, and then Artie asked him if 'bros before hoes' would still apply to them if Kurt was gay. Britt looked a little confused, and was probably about to ask what gardening had to do with being brothers, but Mike quickly changed the subject while Santana whispered in her ear what the phrase meant. In general, the guys found the whole thing incredibly amusing, and the girls found the prospect adorable, and spent time giving Kurt advice and asking him about the boys, and his date last night. He'd described each one in as much detail as he could, which wasn't a lot seeing as he'd spent about two minutes with each one except for Michael.
The whole day was devoted to discussion of 'Kurt's Boys' as it was christened. Kurt grimaced when he first heard the nickname, thinking it sounded like a cheesy twelve year old attempt at making a boy band, but despite his protests the name quickly stuck. In contrast to the last couple of days, school practically flew by, with Kurt barely noticing going to each class, as he was constantly answering questions from Mercedes and fending off Santana, who was trying to find out what school Wes and Blaine went to, in the hopes of finding more prey. Kurt raised an eyebrow at her in confusion when she first approached him, as he'd thought that she and Brittany were together, or that Santana was working towards it. Nevertheless the Latina girl ignored his confusion and attempted to wheedle the answer out of him.
The bell rang for the end of classes and Kurt hurried to his Navigator, wanting time to shower and get ready. They had arranged to meet up outside Eastgate Dollar Movies to see The Hangover Part II. Kurt definitely preferred this to a typical restaurant date. While it wasn't a romantic movie or anything that a first date might normally include, Kurt liked the casual, laid-back outing as well. Anyway, he'd been dying to see this movie after watching the first one with the New Directions a few months ago. It wasn't his usual type of movie, but had reduced Kurt to tears of laughter.
Upon arriving home, Kurt took a record-breaking shower and quickly started selecting his clothes, switching on the Born This Way album ad singing along with the songs he already knew. The rest he would have to memorise very soon. This was shockingly only his second playing of the CD. Seeing as they were only going to the cinema, Kurt opted for a grey t-shirt with black patterns under a light grey jacket and jeans. He felt so dressed-down, but at the same time the whole look was fabulous, especially when worn by him. He combed his hair into a higher pompadour and fixed it with hairspray, and deliberated over adding one of his numerous hats. Perhaps the grey fedora?
Just when he was about to decide Kurt happened to glance at the clock and seeing that he only had about fifteen minutes, grabbed his wallet and iPhone before hurrying down the stairs and out the door, calling a quick 'See you later!' to his dad.
He reached the movie theatre with a couple of minutes to spare, which was a relief. Kurt absolutely despised being even the slightest bit late for things, just as Sue despised anyone who was even the tiniest bit late. Seeing Grant hadn't arrived yet, Kurt took the opportunity to check his appearance in the back of his iPhone, and delicately smoothed his pompadour. As soon as he was absolutely sure that he looked flawless, Kurt put away the phone and scanned the crowd until he saw a head of familiar blond hair moving his way. As Grant drew closer, Kurt noticed that the boy was sporting the smallest amount of black eyeliner, and was once again reminded of Jamie Campbell Bower.
"Hey Kurt!" He greeted, slightly out of breath.
Kurt took in the boy's flushed face. "Hey Grant! Are you okay? You look..." Grant was catching his breath now, and smiled a little bashfully.
"There was loads of traffic on the road. I was worried I'd be late. That definitely wouldn't be a very good start to a date. Shall we?" He nodded towards the box office, and they joined the queue. Kurt noted the stickiness of the floor with distaste, but tried to mask it. He did enjoy going to the movies, but there was something about the combined scent of popcorn and candy and how you had to drag your feet to actually detach from the carpet that he loathed. Grant didn't seem to notice these points, and stepped up to pay for their tickets. When Kurt protested Grant ignored him.
"Even if that coach of yours hadn't ordered each of us to pay for our dates, I still wouldn't let you. I turned up and I asked you out, therefore I have dibs on paying." The corner of his mouth lifted into a cheeky grin that had Kurt feeling a whole lot better about these auditions. Not all of these boys were jackasses, and Grant so far hadn't slipped up at all.
They talked in equal measure as they took their seats. It was about five minutes until the movie was supposed to start, although that didn't include the barrage of ads that always preceded any film meaning they actually had about ten minutes. Grant was the complete opposite of Michael, preferring to ask Kurt all about himself, rather than lay out his life story in front of him. In turn, Kurt learned that Grant enjoyed working with animals, horses in particular, and wanted to be a professional show jumper. Kurt hadn't been aware of many stables in Ohio, but it seemed that Grant's family owned several horses. Grant also loved baseball, and although he didn't sing, had learnt to play the guitar for a few years before having to give it up.
Kurt was surprised at how well they were getting along. Their conversation flowed easily until the actual movie started and they were forced to be silent. As Kurt laughed at one point in the film, he glanced over to Grant and saw that the boy was watching him out of the corner of his eye. Instead of looking away hurriedly, the boy continued to watch him, and Kurt found himself staring back. Grant leaned forwards slightly, hesitating for a second, before quickly pressing his lips to Kurt's. Before Kurt had any time to actually register anything, Grant pulled back and smiled that one-sided smile again, leaning back in his chair and directing his eyes towards the screen.
Kurt spent the rest of the movie trying to actually judge the evening. The kiss, however brief, had been nice. Short and sweet. The boy's manners had been impeccable so far, and Kurt really didn't have anything bad to say about the boy. He'd give the night an eight out of ten, mostly because there was always room for improvement. He definitely wouldn't mind going out again with Grant.
Soon the lights came up and they were forced to leave the cinema. Grant lived quite far away in the opposite direction Kurt was going, and so wouldn't be escorting him home. Kurt didn't mind this, and they parted with promises to text and call later. Kurt got into his Navigator with a smile on his face, and whipped his phone out of his pocket, answering all twenty of the texts from his friends.
Two down, only four more to go! Thank you once again for all of your kind reviews and also thanks to everyone who has just started reading recently and just alerted/favourite. Your kindness and support means a lot to me, and I hope I did this justice. I know it seems a little 'too perfect', but I wanted there to be a big contrast between this date and yesterdays.
On a completely different note, I practically melted at watching the finale, and cried at Kurt and Rachel's song. It's my favourite song from Wicked and I can only begin to imagine how special it must have been to be able to sing that song up there for the actors.
ALMOST 200 REVIEWS! I literally just looked and freaked out upon seeing the number. I reiterate: Thank you so much for reviewing this story! I really can't thank you enough, so I'll just keep saying it every time.
