The promise

"Common guys! We don't have all day!" Quinn prompted while she, Rachel, Santana and Kurt walked through the crowded streets of New York.

They had already accompanied Brittney and Blaine to the airport and now they had all gone to help Quinn in her job hunting.

Santana was worried about her friend. In the morning Quinn had surprised her and Britney by jumping in their bed while being a crying mess. Quinn had told them about the conversation she had shared the night before with Rachel, and Santana was sure her friend was beyond broken.

Quinn was the stronger person she had ever met, but everybody had their limits. Santana wished Quinn hadn't reached hers. Either way, Quinn didn't show her inner turmoil, at least not when Rachel was around. Quinn kept smiling and laughing as if nothing had happened. However, every now and then, Santana was able to see the pain and sorrow reflected in the blonde's eyes.

Oblivious to the blonde's feelings, Rachel kept being as clingy as she was before, or perhaps even more. Santana could tell Rachel was enjoying Quinn's company a lot…OK maybe too much. It was so strange. Santana could bet Rachel felt at least some sort of attraction towards the ex-cheerleader, and yet according to Quinn, Rachel was only interested in having a friendship.

The situation was extremely frustrating and Santana wanted to interfere and made the two girls aware of each other's feelings, but she knew she couldn't do it. Quinn needed to find herself and learn how to love herself, and Rachel… she needed to do the same and in the process understand what true love is all about. So she decided to stay behind and watch. If they really were meant to be together, then things will solve themselves up later.

"So Q, what are your job skills, besides being a controlling bitch and a power addict." Santana teased making the blonde roll her eyes in annoyance.

"I have plenty job skills, Satan. And FYI, the previous mentioned are head-bitch-boss-in-charge qualities."

"Or bossy bitch qualities, but I guess it depends on the context." Santana retorted with a smirk.

"Context or not, you are not a bitch Quinn." Rachel jumped to the blonde's defense. Quinn smiled softly to the little diva while her eyes twinkled with pure devotion and Santana felt the urge of throwing up her breakfast. However, it had been too good to let it go to waste. Quinn had made it.

They already act like a couple; I can't image how they will be when they finally hook up.

"Santana has a point there, Quinn." Kurt said ignoring the glare Rachel sent his way. "What kind of job are you looking for?"

"A temporary one." Quinn said with a smile. "And I think I found just the right one." Rachel looked at her with curiosity and following her gaze she noticed that the blonde-haired woman was staring at a diner across the street.

"A diner?" Rachel asked with a tiny frown on her face."

"Not any diner. A dance and sing diner." Quinn said while grapping Rachel's hand and running to the place. When they reached the door they were surprised by a crying woman that was leaving the building in that precise moment.

"No! Don't go!" Exclaimed a middle aged, short and bald man to the woman that had just left the dinner. "Damn, another waitress gone."

"Excuse me?" Quinn called the man's attention.

"Yes, let me take you to a table."

"No! You see I came for the sign on the door."

"You're here for the job?" the man asked in awe.

"Yes, if you take me." Quinn answered with a shy smile.

"Believe me sweetheart, I'll take anything I get right now." The man confessed with a wary voice. "I'm Rusty and I'm the owner. As you can see this diner is quite big, and I used to have four waitresses and four waiters to help me with the customers and to perform. However, I have been losing my waitresses and the last one has just resigned. I don't care much about the waitressing, but I need female voices. This is the brand of my diner. Singing and food. So if you can sing at least the national anthem I'll be happy to have you. Go to one of the machines, select a song and make an audition." The man said in a rush, surprising the four gleeks. Rusty then just turned around and left, entering the kitchen of the diner.

"Nice place you picked, Fabray." Santana said while raising an eyebrow.

"He's obviously under a lot of stress. I wonder why all the waitresses decided to leave." Rachel said with curiosity.

"Because they weren't enough to stand against us." A fifth voice sounded behind them, and the four roommates turned to see three young men wearing the diner's uniform.

"And who are you?" Kurt asked while pursing his lips in distaste.

"We are currently the only workers here. I warn you blondie, the other waitresses didn't handle the pressure."

"Let me guess, NYADA, right?" Santana asked smirking at the waiters.

"Fourth year."

"Why have you been intimidating the other waitresses?" Rachel asked lifting here chin in defiance.

"Because, if there are fewer waitresses, we get more tips and more songs to perform." One of the waiters answered with a mocking tone of voice. "Besides we don't need women singing stupid chick songs in those tiny skirts."

"Yeah well, your good luck has just ended." Quinn said with a smirked while she walked to a jukebox and selected a song to play. "Because I don't get intimidated very easily. You may think I'm weak because I'm a woman, but that's just proof that you don't know anything about women." The music started playing and Quinn climbed to the little staged placed on the corner of the diner.

"Let's go girls!" Quinn said while winking at her friends.

(Quinn, Rachel, Santana and Kurt)

I'm going out tonight i'm feelin' alright
Gonna let it all hang out
Wanna make some noise really raise my voice
Yeah i wanna scream and shout

Quinn prompted her friends to climb to the stage with her by calling them with a sexy movement of her hand.

Rachel mesmerized by the blonde's voice started walking towards the stage while her friend kept performing.

No inhibitions make no conditions
Get a little outta line
I ain't gonna act politically correct
I only wanna have a good time

The best thing about being a woman

Quinn extended her hand for Rachel to grab and when the brunette finally took her hand she yanked Rachel to the stage with her. Immediately, Rachel started to sing next to her friend.

Is the prerogative to have a little fun and...

Oh oh oh go totally crazy-forget i'm a lady
Men's shirts-short skirts
Oh, oh, oh, really go wild-yeah, doin' it in style
Oh, oh, oh, get in the action-feel the attraction
Color my hair-do what i dare
Oh, oh, oh, i wanna be free-yeah, to feel the way i feel
Man! i feel like a woman!

Santana and Kurt jumped onto the stage with the other girls and joined the song while they danced around in glee.

The girls need a break-tonight we're gonna take
The chance to get out on the town
We don't need romance-we only wanna dance
We're gonna let our hair hang down

The best thing about being a woman
Is the prerogative to have a little fun and...

Oh oh oh go totally crazy-forget I'm a lady
Men's shirts-short skirts
Oh, oh, oh, really go wild-yeah, doin' it in style
Oh, oh, oh, get in the action-feel the attraction
Color my hair-do what I dare
Oh, oh, oh, I wanna be free-yeah, to feel the way I feel
Man! I feel like a woman!

It was fun. The best fun they had ever had in years. This was like glee all over again, but without the boyfriend drama and the constant obstacle that made their lives so complicated while they were on High School.

Right now they were free. They were doing what they have always loved to do. Perform. It felt so liberating and so overwhelming at the same time that they simply let themselves go. On the stage they were free.

I get totally crazy
Can you feel it
Come, come, come on baby

Hu Hu Hu
I feel like a woman

The song finished and suddenly the place was consumed by the sound of clapping and cheering from the customers and even other members of staff.

The four roommates looked at each other and smiled knowingly between each other.

"Bravo, bravo! You are all hired!" The owner exclaimed, running to meet the guys on the stage.

"Waits, Rusty dog! Only Q, applied to the job." Santana argued, but Quinn saw that as an opportunity.

"Please San, it will be so fun, and you don't like the Coyote Ugly since they found out you're still a minor and you can't steal booze." Quinn begged to the Latina, who seemed to consider her words.

"Ok, but just because I can steal fries and probably breadsticks from here." Santana said reluctantly.

"Kurt?"

"Sorry, but I do have a job I like Quinnie Bee." Kurt apologised with a shrug.

"What about you Rach?" Quinn landed here greenish eyes on Rachel chocolate ones and the diva couldn't help but smile at the amount of hope and eagerness she saw in those eyes. Her smile grew wider when she realized how much fun would be working with Quinn in the diner and be able to perform on a stage once in a while. And of course the money wouldn't hurt her.

"I'm in!" Rachel squealed happily when Quinn hugged her and lifted her from the floor, spinning her around.

"Welcome to Rusty's Jukebox Meal!" Rusty said happily.

"That's a crappy name, boss." Santana laughed while watching Quinn put Rachel back to the floor, but still kept her on a tight hug. This might be good for those two.

-x-

After the job hunting and getting something to eat, Kurt and Santana left, leaving Quinn and Rachel on their own.

Rachel could tell Quinn was nervous about her appointment with the doctor. Nevertheless, Quinn tried to act as normal as possible, and Rachel tried to follow her lead, no matter how hard it seemed.

She was scared. No. She was terrified. For some reason the simple thought of Quinn being sick made her uneasy and extremely sad. Without mentioning, scared as hell. At the same time she didn't want to be a pessimist, so she decided to wait and see what was coming. It didn't matter what the results were. They would have not change the fact that she was not leaving Quinn's side.

Now, she was in the waiting room of the doctor's office. Quinn had been inside the office for around an hour, and Rachel was literally freaking out! She wanted to knock on the door and request Quinn to let her stay inside with her, but she knew that it would be out of place.

Just when she felt like she was reaching her breaking point, the office door opened and Quinn walked out of the room. Rachel jumped out of her seat immediately and approached her with wary eyes.

"So…" Rachel prompted waiting for the verdict. She was dying to know. She even felt like Quinn was stretching time before answering, just to make everything more dramatic.

Quinn took a deep breath and sighed contentedly. "I'm clean."

"Oh Quinn, I'm so happy!" Rachel pulled the blonde to a bone-crushing hug.

"Yes, I'm neither pregnant nor sick. I will have an appointment with a psychologist or a therapist in a near future though, but I agree on needing that." Quinn assured, taking a step away from the brunette. "Thank you, Rachel. Thank you for helping me this appointment. I feel a lot better now."

"You're welcome, Quinn."

"It's just. After having unprotected sex and without knowing him so well, I needed to be sure." Quinn said smiling softly at the little Jew. Quinn walked to the receptionist and paid for the appointment, leaving a shocked Rachel submerged in her own thoughts.

Rachel swallowed awkwardly a lump on her throat. She knew about Quinn's fears, but for some reason she didn't think about herself when she thought about having an HIV test. Now, the thought struck her with a brutal force.

She had sex with a gigolo for months, and she never got tested after finding out about Brody's "job". She even thought she had gotten pregnant, but she never considered get to herself tested.

"I'm ready. Shall we?" asked Quinn walking towards her and pointing to the door.

"Yeah, just give me a sec." Rachel needed to be sure as well, now that the thought was on her mind, she would not feel satisfied until having all the answers.

Minutes later, Rachel approached Quinn with half a smile.

"What was that about?" Quinn asked with curiosity, after watching Rachel went to talk with the receptionist for a while.

"I was making an appointment." Rachel stated flatly hopping her friend would leave the topic behind, but she knew that wasn't going to happen. She started walking through the hallway, followed closely by the blonde.

"Wow, what do you mean 'making an appointment'? Why would you need one?" Quinn asked with curiosity, but mostly with concern.

"It's nothing Quinn." Rachel said while stepping outside the building. She didn't notice that she was practically running away from Quinn when she started walking.

"Rachel wait!" Quinn called her name while gripping her arm and spun her towards her. "Rachel, you are making me worry, why won't you tell me?"

"Do you promise not to get mad?" Rachel asked while making her best puppy face at Quinn.

"I can promise to try not to. Now tell me, please." Quinn prompted lifting Rachel's chin with her finger so that she could meet her eyes with Rachel's.

"You know that I dated Brody, right?" Rachel asked with uncertainty.

"Yes, so…"

"Well when we were dating, I may have had a pregnancy-scare. I wasn't obviously, but later I found out he was…"

"He was…" Quinn encouraged, her voice was on edge.

"He was a gigolo." Rachel finally said it. She was expecting a screaming session from Quinn, but she was surprised when the blonde simply took a deep breath, turned around and walked away.

"Quinn! Wait, please! You promised not to get mad!" Rachel begged while she pursued Quinn down the street that leaded to their apartment.

Quinn remained silent all the way to the apartment. It wasn't until they were locked inside that the blonde finally snapped.

"Damned Rachel! What the hell is wrong with you!?" Quinn exclaimed angrily. Rachel jumped surprised by the sudden outburst. She had never seen Quinn so mad.

"I'm sorry I didn't mean to scream at you. It's just… God…. What were you thinking?" Quinn voice was now low and pleading.

"I didn't know he was a gigolo, Quinn!" Rachel quickly defended herself.

"But you treated him like one! You think I don't know that you were never exclusive? That you had sex with Finn on the V-day? You may not have known that he was a gigolo, but for you he was just casual sex! Someone to keep you busy while you waited for Finn!" Quinn was obviously angry, and Rachel felt herself getting angrier as well. She didn't need to defend her own actions.

"So what? Yes, I was never serious with my relationship with Brody. So what?"

"This is not you!" Quinn exclaimed signaling at Rachel. "What happened to the Rachel Berry that believed that sex was something you shared only with a person you love? The Rachel that wanted to save her virginity until she was twenty five? What happened to the Rachel that was a hopeless romantic and believed that sex was not something physical, but an act of love?"

"She grew up!" Rachel exclaimed.

"Really? Because I think that the old Rachel would have never had a false pregnancy alarm. The old Rachel would have never been in a casual sex relationship, because she was strong, confident and she knew that she deserved better than to wait for a man-child all her life."

"This is about Finn, isn't it? Really? What do you want, Quinn? If you want him for yourself then you can-"

"Why do you defend him, Rachel? He had done nothing, but to hurt you! He cheated on you constantly. He slept with Santana and lied to you about it, and yet you still forgive him. But when you kissed Brody after his absence of months, he breaks up with you and you let him stumble over you like if he were above you." Quinn said while trying to contain her rage towards the tall man-boy.

"While he was prompting girls to get topless at his College, you were here in a fake relationship waiting for him to come back! You have this obsession with him, and I don't understand why? Yes, he is a nice boy, Rachel, but I would never take him back because I know I deserve better. And if he is not good enough for me, then you are a thousand miles above him, Rachel."

"Well, for your information Quinn, I'm no longer with Finn." Rachel said with a trembling voice.

"It does not matter. You have been with him since you two joined glee club. You haven't spent more than a couple of months without a boyfriend or a sex buddy, and yes, you may have had boyfriends and times out in the middle, but you never let him go. Just like now. You are still waiting for him, you always have."

"I…" Rachel stumbled with her words because… Quinn was right.

"You have changed so much from when I first met you. Sure there are things that are better now. You are less selfish, but you had so many qualities I respected from you when we were in McKinley. You were smart and brave. You never feared saying what you thought and still you dealt with the consequences. You were beautiful in your own way, and you didn't care about people talking about your clothes or appearance. You were proud of your talent and you never doubt about it. You had goals and so many dreams. However, in some moment along the way, you started to change. You changed so much. Not in a bad way, but sometimes I miss the old Rachel. Don't you?" Quinn asked looking at Rachel with a mix of longing and hope in her hazel eyes.

"I have the feeling that you changed for him." Quinn said patiently. "And please don't think, I'm asking you to change either. You shouldn't have to change for anyone? You are perfect just the way you are, Rachel. I know you came to NY to find yourself, but I think it has mostly confused you more because your heart is still with Finn. You are not together anymore; maybe you should take this time to get to know yourself." Quinn pleaded with earnest.

The blonde glanced at Rachel and noticed the confusion, anger and fear on her eyes. She suddenly realized that she had said too much. Yes, she believed everything she had told Rachel, but she didn't have the right to ask anything from Rachel.

If she Rachel got mad at her for what she said, what was she going to do? What if Rachel hated her? Quinn couldn't stand the idea of having Rachel hating her. She shouldn't have said anything. Why did she let her stupid heart bent out like that? Yes, she was concerned about Rachel's behavior from the last years, but she should have talk to her more calmly and don't attack her and her relationship with Finn, just because deep down she was jealous of the lead singer.

She needed it to fix it. Now!

"Rachel?" Quinn called her name with hesitation, but when Rachel's cold gaze laid on her, she froze completely.

"Leave."

"Rachel…please!" Quinn reached for the diva's hand, but Rachel yanked it away.

"Leave, Quinn. Now."

Quinn took a deep breath and bit her lower lip to stop it from trembling. She had messed up. She had messed up royally. She didn't want to Rachel to see her cry, so she ran. She left the apartment and ran while her eyes poured another set of tears on behalf of Rachel Berry.

-x-

"We are home!" Santana yelled from the entrance expecting for Rachel and Quinn to come and meet then on the living room, but she was only greeted with a fiery Rachel Berry that stomped over her and Kurt with obvious disgust.

"I need to ask you something, and I need you to be completely honest. Do not spare my feelings because we are friends." Rachel said while dragging her two roommates to the couch of the living room.

"Of course, Rach." Kurt said understandingly and a little concerned about the singers behavior.

"We're friends?!" Santana asked feigning surprise. Rachel ignored the sassy remarked and addressed her friends with seriousness.

"Do you think I'm too good for Finn?"

"Well…"

"Yes." Santana answer fatly earning a scowl from Kurt. "She asked for us to be blunt, Sweet cheeks, so you might be it yourself."

"Kurt?" Rachel prompted with curiosity.

"Rach, you know I love Finn. He is my brother, but… well he is kind of dumb and quite homophobic sometimes. He did outed Santana…"

"How come you never told me this?!" Rachel asked unbelievingly. "I was going to marry him!"

"Quinn did tell you, and you went all 'you can't goes to my wedding, bitch', so we all decided to let you go through it. Besides, I didn't like you much then" Santana shrugged half heartedly.

"You do have a little obsession with Finn, Rach. You have always been bias about him, and honestly I always thought you were going to call off the wedding." Kurt added with a little grimace.

"Even Noah is better than Finny-boy. Cuter and he lasted longer at sex. Finn got ten minutes with me and I will never get them back."

"Santana!" Kurt chastised her.

"Ok, five minutes." Santana rolled her eyes in annoyance. "Rachel, you are going to be a huge thing here on Broadway and have an awesome career. Finn, he will probably be at most your trophy-husband, which is kinds of sad because you could do so much better."

"Look Rach, all of this doesn't matter because what really matters is what you feel about him." Kurt said while grabbing the hand of her best friend.

Rachel swallowed with difficulty. She was stunned. She never imagined her friends thought so low of Finn. Were all her friends thinking she was making a mistake when she announced her marriage with Finn?

"Do you think I have changed?" Rachel asked solemnly. She needed to see if Quinn's previous attack was well founded or not.

"What do you mean?" Kurt asked with intrigue.

"Have I changed since Sophomore year?" Rachel asked already knowing the answer to her question.

"Yes." Santana and Kurt answered at the same time. Rachel flinched a little when she didn't detect a trace of doubt in her friend's words.

"For good or for bad." Rachel asked with a soft voice, now fearing the answer.

"Look Rachel, I don't know what's the deal with the 100 questions, but if you want me to be honest I'm gonna be honest." Santana said with serious eyes. "Neither. At the beginning you were annoying as hell and you dressed like a rag doll, but you were more confident and you had this thing about you that made me hate your guts, but at the same time… I respected you a lot." Santana said with sincerity.

"Sure you were annoying, but I couldn't help but envy you at times. You were above everyone else and you knew it. You made everything look easy and yet I knew how much you put an effort to accomplish your dreams. And beyond all of that I believe that back then you were… happier." Santana said while adopting a more mature side of her personality.

She knew that this conversation had to do with Quinn and if she needed to be completely honest with Rachel to help in any way, she would.

"Happier?" Rachel asked confused.

"Yeah, back then you used to beam this huge smile to me and Quinn even though you thought we hated you." Santana said with a small smile. "As Quinn used to say to me: 'you were stronger than anyone in McKinley' Now, you have lost a little bit of that shine Rachel. And yes, now you are less annoying-thank god for that-, but you could use to get back that old spark on you, Rachel."

"Wow, since when did you stop being a bitch?" Kurt asked in surprise.

"Rachel, I don't know what happened for you to have this break down right now, but I'm sure anything Quinn said to you was because she cares about you." Santana assured her surprising Rachel and Kurt.

"What does Quinn has to do with this?" Kurt asked in confusion, but Santana grabbed his armed and dragged him out of the living room.

"Talk with her Rach, please." That was the last thing Santana said before leaving Rachel alone in the living room.

Rachel didn't know what to think and how to feel right now. Because deep down, she knew Quinn was right. She hadn't had let Finn go. She, even now, was waiting for him. It was truth that Finn wasn't the best boyfriend, and she was aware that they didn't match very well.

She was passionate, he was uncaring. She was strict, he was carefree. She was an overachiever, and he was a slacker. She was small, he was tall. She was smart and he was…dull? They were opposites in every sense of the word. The only thing they did together was sing.

In fact, they didn't have anything in common at the beginning. That's why she had to…change. Heck! She did change a lot. Now she wasn't a complete vegan because Finn kept forgetting and she had to get used to eat white meat and dairy products once in a while.

So, what was that made her want to be with him? It was stupid, why she was making herself this question? But what was even more surprising to her was that she wasn't sure about the answer. What was it? What did she love about Finn? For some reason all the answers that popped in her mind didn't seem enough.

Sure she didn't need to have a reason to love Finn, but then why she needed so desperately an answer? Did she even love Finn or did she just take her love for him for granted?

Maybe Quinn was right after all. She needed time to think. She needed time to find herself. She needed time to learn to be herself.

Suddenly, the front door opened and Rachel jumped to her feet. Quinn stood on the door looking at her with doubt and apprehension.

Rachel schooled her eyes over Quinn's appearance and noticed how red and puffy her eyes were. She felt a tug on her heart when she realized that the blonde had been crying after their fight.

"I just came to get my things. I'll leave after." Quinn said while diverting her eyes away from the probing ones of Rachel.

"How much time?" Rachel asked earning a confused look from the blonde.

"What?"

"You said I needed time to learn about myself, a time without a boyfriend. How much time do I need?" Rachel asked again.

"I don't know Rachel! A year? If this is your way of-" Quinn started getting a little exasperated, but Rachel soon cut her off.

"Deal!"

"Wait what?" Quinn asked in puzzlement.

"I'll go a year without thinking about boys, Quinn." Rachel stated with a soft smile.

"Rachel I didn't mean for you to…"

"I know Quinn, but I think that you were right. I have change and I do need time to think about myself and I won't be able to do that if I keep waiting for Finn to come and take my as his wife." Quinn frowned immediately at her words and Rachel laughed loudly at her reaction. "The point is that I think you are right. I have been out of character for a while and I don't like this Rachel very much. You were right, what I did with Brody was stupid and it could have been even dangerous."

"Rachel, I didn't want for you to feel guilty or anything."

"And I don't!" Rachel assured her. "Quinn, I get that you are just worried about me, and that's why I'm not mad at you."

"You're not?"

"No." Rachel laughed at the expression of full joy that invaded Quinn's features. "On the contrary I'm glad that you care so much about me that you wanted to make me realize that something has been wrong with me." Rachel said smiling softly to the blonde.

"There is nothing wrong with you Rach! I just-"

"I know." Rachel stopped the blonde by sneaking her hands around Quinn's waist and pulling her friend into a hug. "I know. But I do believe I need the time and I understand why you said all those things Quinn."

"I just want you to be happy." Quinn said while returning the hug with all her might. Rachel smiled widely when she heard the blonde's confession.

"Thank you, Quinn." Rachel said while pulling away from the blonde. "We were supposed to celebrate your test results today, and your new job."

"Are you really going to do this?" Quinn asked with concern. Rachel slowly lifted her left arm and cupped Quinn's cheek with her hand.

"Yes, and don't worry. You are not making me do this. It's my decision. Please don't feel like you are forcing me into anything." Rachel said while rubbing her thumb on the blonde's cheek. "I don't want this to ruin our friendship. I really enjoy being your friend and I look forward to work with you on the dinner. Please Quinn don't let this trouble you" Quinn blushed profoundly and turned away her gaze in embarrassment.

"Ok."

"So, are we going to celebrate or not?" Rachel asked with a sexy smirked drawn upon her lips. Quinn leaned over and kissed Rachel softly on her right cheek. Rachel rapidly touched the place where the blonde's lips had been with surprise.

"Thank you, Rachel." Quinn smiled at her and Rachel couldn't help but blush under the penetrating gaze of those beautiful hazel eyes.

"Thank you, Quinn." She breathed out with a relaxed smile on her face.

"Now let's call for a pizza and drag Santana and Kurt down for a movie night."

"That's sounds like a plan."

They might be new at this being friends thing, but Rachel was sure she could get used to have Quinn Fabray as her best friend.
