Who was she? Where was she? She was alone and terrified. She had no memories, no idea of how she'd gotten there. The ground she was huddled on was cold and the sky was dark. She opened her mouth and a tiny keening sound came out. There was the sound of sand crunching underneath someone's feet. She whipped around to find a boy wearing a strange outfit approaching her. She immediately began scooting backwards, her blue eyes wide and frightened.
"Hey, it's okay," the boy said. "I'm not going to hurt you." He held his hands out in a placating manner and gave her a small smile. "What's your name? I'm Robin."
She opened her mouth, but again all that came out was a pathetic whine. She stopped scooting away and allowed Robin to approach her. She didn't know why, but she felt like she would be able to trust him.
Once Robin was close enough, he held his hands out to the girl. When she put her hands in his, he gently pulled her to her feet. He noticed her black shirt for the first time. "Hey, you a fan of Superman?"
She cocked her head to the side curiously. Superman? Who was that? She whimpered as Robin tried to pull his hands away from hers. She held on tighter.
Robin winced a little. "Wow, you've got a strong grip for a kid," he said. "It's okay. I'm not going to leave you. Do you even understand what I'm saying?"
She didn't. His tone calmed her a bit, though. She loosened her grip on his hands enough for him to let her go. She let out a small cry as he turned away from her and began walking away.
"Come on," Robin turned around and held his hand out to her. "I told you, I'm not going to leave you. Let's figure out where we are and find where you belong."
She rushed forward and grabbed on to Robin's offered hand. She looked up at him with wide eyes and made a small squeaking noise.
Robin chuckled and smoothed down the girl's hair with his free hand. "Yeah, exactly." The sun had already began rising. Robin still had no clue where he was or what was going on. He certainly couldn't figure out why there was a little girl all by herself in the middle of a desert.
The girl felt all the overwhelming fear she had felt when she'd first woken up disappearing. She snuggled close to Robin's side as the two continued walking.
They were just about to round a large boulder when Robin heard the sound of a car approaching. He peered around the boulder and saw armed men driving towards them. Quickly, Robin leapt up onto the boulder and hid behind a small covering in the boulder. He looked down when he heard a small keening noise. The girl was still down there, looking absolutely terrified. "Come on," he mouthed and motioned up to where he was. He was shocked when the girl actually flew up to where he was.
Robin didn't have time to question her about it. The jeep was almost to where they were. He held the girl close to him and crouched down so they were out of sight. As soon as he heard the jeep driving away, he poked his head up. He glared suspiciously at the armed men. "What are Bialya soldiers doing in…" he pulled up the map on his wrist and gasped. "Bialya? More importantly, what am I doing here?" He noticed the date at the bottom of the map. "It's September? What about March?"
The girl looked at him with curious eyes. She had no idea what he was saying, but he seemed distressed. She scooted closer to Robin. She sat up on her knees and gently held his face between her hands. She made a small humming noise and rubbed her nose against his.
"Don't worry," Robin calmed himself down. He took the girl's hands in his and gave them a gentle squeeze. "We'll figure this out." He brought his hand up to call Batman on his communicator. Something in the back of his mind nagged him not to. He put his hand down and stood up. "Come on." He jumped down from the boulder and looked up expectantly at the girl.
She gently floated down to the ground and landed beside him. Immediately, she grabbed onto his cape and gave a small smile.
Robin smiled back at her and began walking forward. He paused when he noticed a black cloth of some sort on a rock just ahead of them. He walked over and picked the cloth up off the rock. The black cloth had a red 'S' on it, just like the one on the little girl's. He narrowed his eyes and then looked down at the girl. "Do you recognize this?"
She tiled her head to the side as Robin held the cloth out to her. She ran her hands over the red 'S' and then looked down at the one on her shirt. She took the cloth from Robin and sniffed it curiously. She made a small humming sound. There was something familiar about the smell on the cloth. She looked up at Robin and let out a tiny 'ah'.
"This would be so much easier if you talked," Robin sighed. He reached out to take the cloth back from her, but she immediately recoiled away from him. "Hey, it's okay. You want to hold on to it?" He motioned forward with his head. "Come on. Let's see if we can't figure out what's going on."
The girl held the cloth in one hand and held on to Robin's cape with the other. The two walked for the rest of the day, seeing no more signs of people. Robin had his map up and was heading towards something. The girl had no clue where they were going. The sun eventually set and the moon was high in the sky again. Her throat was beginning to feel dry and scratchy. She tugged on Robin's cape and whimpered.
Robin looked down. The girl was rubbing her throat. "Thirsty?" He felt around on his utility belt and frowned. "Sorry, I don't have any water." His map suddenly began beeping wildly. "This way!" He grabbed the girl's hand and began running towards where his map was saying.
As soon as Robin saw a tall metal machine over some dunes, he dragged the girl down behind the dunes with him. He narrowed his eyes suspiciously. The setting just oozed trap. He looked at the girl and pointed to her and then to where she was sitting.
The girl let out a small keening noise when Robin went to stand up. He quickly crouched back down and put a finger to her lips. The girl sat behind the dune, clutching the black cloth in her hands while Robin slowly approached the machine. The girl let out a small cry as men appeared from out of the sand and began attacking Robin. She watched for a moment while he fought, but when she saw one sneaking up behind Robin, she couldn't sit still.
She leapt out from her hiding place and charged towards the man. She grabbed the man by his hand and swung him around before releasing him. The man went sailing off a number of yards away. When she turned around, she found the rest of the men had been taken out by some newcomers. She immediately shrank back.
"K.F!" Robin shouted excitedly. He rushed up to his friend and the two high fived. "It's good to see a familiar face."
"You lost your memories two?" Kid Flash asked.
"Six months of them!" Robin bemoaned. He glanced over his shoulder when he saw Kid Flash looking behind him. He smiled at the girl and beckoned her over. "It's okay. He's a friend."
The girl cautiously approached them. She immediately latched on to Robin's cape and hid behind him. She squeaked and hummed curiously up at Robin.
Kid Flash raised an eyebrow. "Is it broken?"
"She can't talk and I don't think she understands anything I say," Robin answered. "I found her wandering around by herself." He reached behind him and patted the girl's head. He looked over when he heard one of the men groaning. "Let's tie these creeps up and figure out what's going on."
"Superkid!" A girl with red hair appeared in the sky and floated down to the ground. She hesitated when she saw the frightened look on the girl's face and the suspicious one on Robin's. "That's her name. Superkid."
"You want to explain to us what's going on now?" A blonde girl snapped impatiently.
"Right," the red haired girl said. "My name is Miss Martian…" she then launched into an explanation of how they all knew each other, how they were all on a team together.
Superkid kept herself latched on to Robin the entire time. She had no idea what Miss Martian was saying. She looked up at Robin and made a small whimpering noise when the blonde girl, Artemis began shouting angrily at Kid Flash.
"Ugh!" Artemis groaned in frustration. "We need our memories back!"
Superkid squeaked as they were no longer standing in the desert. They were standing in a strange place surrounded with moving pictures of all of them. She held on to Robin tighter as Miss Martian explained they were inside her mind. "I need access to your minds. Together our broken memories can make a whole."
Artemis frowned for a moment. "Last six months only!" She looked down when Kid Flash took her hand.
Robin took Superkid's hand and smiled down at her. "I know you don't really understand, but it's going to be okay."
Superkid let out a small gasp as she felt Miss Martian searching her mind. Memories came flooding back to her. Robin, Kid Flash, and Aqualad saving her and Superboy from Cadmus. Miss Martian joining them for the first time. She remembered Batman debriefing the team of strange goings on in Bialya, which was under control of Queen Bee. Everything came flooding back up until they had all woken up without their memories. "Aqualad!" Superkid gasped. "We have to find him!"
Artemis and Kid Flash looked at each other and quickly tore their hands away from each other. "Yeah, being out in a desert for 24 hours can't be good for a guy with gills."
"We need to find Brother too," Superkid mumbled worriedly. She looked up at Robin and smiled at him. "Thanks for taking care of me, Robin."
Robin smiled and ruffled Superkid's hair. "Of course." He pulled up his map. "Now that I know to look for Aqualad, I can find him." He typed something in and grinned when a red light began blinking. "He's close! He's not moving, though."
The group rushed towards where Aqualad was unconscious. Miss Martian attempted to restore his memories, but it was no use. He was too weak. "Kid Flash, can you take him to the Bio Ship? It's out of range and I need to go help Superboy."
Kid Flash frowned. "Aqualad needs your help, now."
"Superboy wasn't born six months ago," Miss Martian argued. "All he has is his basic animal instincts. I'm the only one that can help him."
"That explains you not being able to talk," Robin said to Superkid. "You were like a little duck, following me everywhere."
Superkid felt her face heat up. She looked away from Robin and over to Aqualad. "I can carry him."
Megan suddenly let out a pained gasp. "Superboy is in pain!" She flew off, despite her team's protest.
"What do you think is happening to my brother?" Superkid wrung her hands together nervously. "What if they're killing him?"
"Hey, Superboy is tough," Artemis said. She crouched down to Superkid's level and patted her head. "Miss Martian will save him. Right now, we need to focus on helping Aqualad."
Superkid looked down at their unconscious leader. "Right," she said. She grabbed Aqualad's arm and pulled it over her shoulder. She hovered off the ground a few feet off the ground so that Aqualad's feet weren't dragging in the sand. "Let's go."
They hadn't gotten very far when Robin motioned for them to take cover. A group of Bialyian soldiers went by. Superkid gently laid Aqualad down on the ground. She placed her small hand on his forehead when he began mumbling in Atlantean. "It's okay, Kaldur. You need to be quiet."
"What are we going to do about those guys?" Kid Flash groaned. "I'm out of juice."
"And I'm almost out of arrows," Artemis hissed.
Kid Flash was about to ask Robin what they should do when he realized Robin had already disappeared. "I hate when he ninjas off like that," he mumbled. He looked suspiciously over at Artemis. "Hey, when we were alone earlier, you never told me why your dad would want you to kill me."
Artemis waved her hand dismissively and looked away from Wally. "I was just confused. I saw a movie last night about this ninja girl and her ninja dad had ordered her to kill her ninja boyfriend because he was from a rival clan."
Kid Flash wiggled his eyebrows. "So, I'm your ninja boyfriend?"
Superkid looked at the two curiously. "Wait, so you two are dating now?"
"No!" Artemis and Kid Flash both shouted.
Robin reappeared suddenly. "Seriously, you two? Get a room."
Kid Flash glared at Robin. "Where'd you go?"
Robin flashed them all a grin. "I was breaking radio silence." There was a sudden explosion from the direction where the soldiers had been. A large wall of smoke suddenly covered the area. "That's our cue."
Superkid hoisted Aqualad back over her shoulder. They quickly scurried off towards the Bio Ship's location. As soon as they got there, Artemis hooked Aqualad up to an IV. Superkid sat by Aqualad's side, twisting her hands together. "He's going to be okay, right? Aqualad and Brother."
"Of course," Artemis reassured. She stroked Superkid's hair. She looked over at Robin. "Hey, what'd you mean about Superkid being like a little duck earlier?"
Robin grinned. "You know how baby ducks imprint on the first thing they see and follow it everywhere? That's how she was."
Superkid blushed and looked away. "I didn't have any memories!"
Robin's laughter was interrupted by Miss Martian communicating with them through their telepathic link. I've got Superboy back. We're heading your way!
Aqualad shot up. "Who are you? Why are you in my head?"
Of course! Miss Martian chuckled. Don't worry, Aqualad. I'll be there soon to restore your memories!
Are you okay, Brother? Superkid asked through the link.
I'm fine. He answered. You?
Fine. Robin took care of me. Superkid answered with a grin.
I forgot to get a souvenir! Kid Flash wailed.
Miss Martian chuckled. Don't worry. Superboy and I have that covered.
As soon as Miss Martian and Superboy were on the ship, Superkid flew to Superboy. She hugged him tightly while Miss Martian took care of restoring Aqualad's memories. Superkid held her brother tightly for a few minutes. "I'm so glad you're okay. I was so scared when Megan said you were in pain. What'd they do to you? Where's your shirt?"
Superboy chuckled and hugged Superkid to him. "I'm okay. That's all you need to worry about."
Superkid was about to protest when she heard something whirring and clicking behind Superboy. She peered over his shoulder and saw a giant sphere. Curious, she pulled away from Superboy and flew over to the sphere and circled it. She giggled as it whirred at her and followed her around. "Do we get to keep it?"
"Of course." Superboy said with a grin.
Kid Flash gave an impressed whistle. "Now that, is a souvenir."
