The sun was as bright as he had ever seen it in Berk, warm rays of early afternoon beating down fiercely as early spring continued its slow march into summer. Hiccup had been up since before dawn, Toothless in tow, his turn to take a portion of Berk's growing livestock out to graze in the higher hills.

During the springtime, this was a job Hiccup did not mind doing in the slightest. It was the only time of the year that Berk's weather was appreciated, rather then simply tolerated. Brisk mornings that melted in to tenderly warm afternoons, there was nothing quite like it. Even though they had both been at it for almost six hours at that point, neither had once opened their mouth to express disdain for what they were doing.

They continued herding the sheep to and fro, slowly chewing on the dried and smoked fish Hiccup had brought along for sustenance.

"This…this is nice. I do not mind this. This is not as bad as I had feared it would be when you woke me before dawn."

Hiccup had to smile at the comment; it had nearly been a fight that morning to get Toothless out of bed. It would seem that old habits died hard, even when they came from someone who had recently changed species.

They continued with their chore just as they continued to enjoy the weather. They slowly made their way to the peak of a large hill that overlooked a sweeping dip in the land, the flock spreading out and slowly chomping away at the lush green grass that was there. Both Hiccup and Toothless had had to shield their eyes against the bright rays of the sun.

"Does the sun always feel like this, Hiccup?" Toothless asked suddenly, turning his attention back to the sheep below, hand still shielding his squinting eyes.

"Like what, warm and nice? You haven't ever been out in the sun before in all your life, Toothless?" Hiccup asked jokingly.

"No, I have. It is just…this skin feels so much more then my last did. The rain is wetter and cooler then I ever remember it being. The fire warmer. The mornings more chilled. It is strange to me, that by simply being human, I can feel things that I would not have thought to feel before. The sun, I would have never thought it to be such a thing to take pleasure in."

Hiccup glanced at his friend, the hand shielding his eyes dropping to his side as he watched him trot down the hill and join the flock again.

What a strange thing, this all was. There was so much more he had to teach his friend, least he accidentally get himself hurt. A little red hot drop of worry plunged into his stomach at this thought, making his insides pucker terribly.

He followed after him as quickly as he could. In his haste, he tripped on what could have only been his own feet, falling face first into the soft, muddy earth. He found himself grinning at the irony of it all as Toothless helped him to his feet.

If he had been able to survive to thirteen years, despite all of his clumsiness and bad luck, Toothless would surely be able to survive one measly year of human life. Even if he hadn't known exactly what sunshine felt like.
