Sam's point of view.
I took a deep breath and unlocked the door. I looked up and saw a soaked through Zoe Hanna complaining about her heels. Thank goodness, I thought to myself. Zoe took off her coat and shoes and set off in search of a towel. I shut the front door and sighed in relief.
I peered in on Lottie and went to find some spare clothes for Zoe. I had totally forgotten that she was coming over to assess Lottie's injuries. I grabbed some joggers and a t-shirt and headed into the bathroom. 'Clothes outside the door Zo.' I called to her. 'Thanks Sam, I'll be down in a moment alright. Medical kit is in the hallway. Do some obs on her will you,' Zoe collared to me.
There was no way I was waking up Lottie. I'd made the mistake of waking up a child in Holby once. She screamed the hospital down for an hour and well her mother was less than thankful. I wanted wait until she woke up on her own. She looked so peaceful.
I walked down stairs and grabbed Zoe's medical kit, took it into the living room and sat beside Lottie. Against my better judgement I picked her up and held her close to me. I stoked her hair like I'd done previously and slowly her eyes began to flicker open.
It took a moment before she realise where she was but it took less than last time. 'Mummy..' She mumbled. 'It's alright Sammy's here. Don't worry.' I comforted her.
'Sammy my tummy hurts.' She said quietly. I laid her on the pillow so I could see. 'Can you tell me where sweetheart?' Lottie pointed under her belly button. I lifted her dress up l, so I could see. There was a dark purple bruises formulating. It had grown since the last time I'd checked it. When bruises move like this it suggests internal bleeding. I told Lottie to be brave and stay still whilst I got Zoe.
'Zoe, Suspected internal bleeding in Lottie's tummy. Grown since discharge and painful.' I shouted up the stairs. 'Coming, you done those obs yet?' She replied. 'No, she's only just woke up!' 'Pronto Sam.' She said sarcastically.
I rummaged around Zoe's medical kit. Why did she insist on being so messy, I thought to myself. Finally I found a manual blood pressure machine. Unlike the ones at Holby, it inflates about your arm then you listen through a stethoscope.
I explained to Lottie that this was what I was going to do and she gave me a slight nod. Her blood pressure was quite low. I took her temperature, 38.5 and her pulse normal. Zoe finally arrived down stairs with a towel wrapped round her head.
'How is she?' Zoe asked. I gave her the lets talk outside look. 'Lottie, Sammy and Zoe are going to have a little talk you shout me if you need me and I'll get you some medicine for your sore tummy, alright.' I told her. 'Yes mummy Sam.' She replied weakly.
I walked into the hall where Zoe was waiting for me. 'She needs to go to the ED as soon as possible to stop the bleeding.' I informed Zoe. 'I know she doesn't look well Sam. Shall I call paediatrics to see if we can get her straight up there? Robyn is working up there tonight!' Zoe agreed, then phones the ward.
'Hello, it's Dr Hanna. I have a paediatric patient. Aged three years, internal bleeding and she needs urgent surgery. No she's currently at home. I'm on a home visit. Yes, alright I'll be there in around 20 minutes with the patient and her mother. Yes okay bye.' Zoe nodded as the phone call ended. I sent her to get some Calpol for Lottie, whilst I told her what was happening.
Lottie looked at me with tears in her eyes. 'Cuddle Sammy?' She said with a tear rolling down her cheek. 'Its okay Lottie, I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. Remember where me and you met Lottie?' I asked her, she nodded. 'Well, aunty Zoe is going to take us back there so we need to pack some of your new clothes and toys because you have to stay there a little while.' I explained. Her heart sank, 'but Sammy I like it here. Please don't make me go.' She sobbed, clinging onto my top just as she had done in Rhesus. 'Hey, Lottie calm down. I'll be there with you. Shall we wipe your tears and make sure you take your pencils in my bag.' I soothed her. She nodded, wiped her face on my top and walked slowly over to the table where she had her paper and pencils.
I put four sets of PJ's in my handbag for Lottie and two for me. I grabbed her a dress and tights and matching shoes and other comfy clothes for her to wear. Then Zoe arrived back from the kitchen and gave Lottie a spoonful of Calpol. I grabbed some little bits and we were ready to go.
