Sorry for the long wait, because this chapter's shorter I'll be writing and uploading the next one in the next few days.
Chapter Nine
Seraphina's eyes open and close, her body writhing as spasms of excruciating pain run through her as she drifts in and out of unconsciousness. Her hands grip to the edges of the bed in the infirmary, or at least that's where she thinks she is. Everything is chaos, her surroundings are unclear and hazy, the Shadowhunters around her are blurred in her line of vision.
The warlock, Magnus Bane, whose golden eyes she can decipher through the obscurity, looks down upon her. His attempts to extract the demon blood from her system have been dismal and he has been working on her for over two long hours.
" Any progress?" Seraphina hears an intellectual voice, Hodge.
" Whatever the form of demon blood that Seraphina has consumed is powerful. I've never seen anything like it." Magnus can't help but wonder about the occurrence happening before his eyes and also feel pity for the girl in pain before him.
" How so?" Replies Hodge with an unnerving sense of curiosity.
" I don't know how long it's been in her veins. Judging by the time limit she's been here and due to the acceleration rate that the demon blood is running through her system, I find it impossible that she consumed it while on Earth yet she has." Magnus explains, the crease between his brows narrowing with either frustration or helplessness. " For example in a Shadowhunter, it'd take months or years for demon blood such as this to work through their system and to make any distinguishable changes. That's why I find Seraphina's case rather surprising."
Steps sound in the room and another voice interrupts. " Did we mention she's an angel?" Jace's voice still has a hint of cockiness subsiding within it, yet it's overshadowed by frustration and worry, two emotions that Jace despises showing.
" Judging by the shocked look on the Downworlders face I guess not."
" Magnus will suffice, it's my name and I'm sure you have the capability of using it." Magnus responds lightly, his narrowed eyes reaching Jace's as he makes observations about the sudden intruder.
" Alright. Magnus. Seraphina is in excruciating pain and you still haven't done anything about it."
" The pain is unfortunately part of the process of removing demon blood from the system. Also due to the new information you have given me, which I should've known sooner, her being an Angel will make matters more…life threatening." Magnus explains and before he has the time to grab a syringe, Jace springs at him, grabbing Magnus by the edge of his collar and pushing him against the wall, anger flaring from him.
" Life threatening? No, don't you dare say that not now. I swear Warlock; if Seraphina dies under your watch or comes to any further pain I will personally remove that life of yours. She doesn't deserve this, Seraphina is good and pure and this demon blood is blackening all that I…" Jace cuts himself off before he lets the words escape his lips and he clenches his fists with aggravation.
" All that you love about her." Magnus looks at Jace with understanding and lets out a sigh. " I understand. I'll do everything I can to make sure Seraphina gets through this." At these words, Jace releases Magnus suddenly realising that his actions were uncalled for and all he does is nod.
Jace then edges off to the side of the room, his eyes not leaving Seraphina's shaking body. Magnus' hand then picks up an injection filled with a bright pink liquid, a liquid which seems to have a certain glint in the light. " What is that?" Jace asks cautiously, appearing less intimidating now.
Magnus hesitates and sticks the needle in Seraphina's arm as he grabs hold of it, injecting the fluid into her. He knows that if he told Jace what it was, he'd most likely protest. " Warlock blood, my blood. It contains my magic and well not to brag but I'm rather powerful. Not to discourage you, but this is the last hope. I've tried everything else, now all we can do is see if the magical properties in my blood are strong enough to eliminate the demon blood." Magnus says, carefully watching Jace's reaction which only seems to be a small twitch on his mouth. Jace is against the process, but if it's the last hope and if it will save Seraphina's heart, then he can't stop Magnus from helping her.
Jace folds his arms, him, Magnus and Hodge watching and awaiting the results in anticipation. Seraphina's moans and screams went silent minutes ago, the pain must've been too much and now she stops writhing. Her mouth opens and she lets out a relieved breath, her eyes still closed and her body slightly twitching. She's settling and the pain is lessening. " It's working." Jace announces, the happiness present in his voice. He then watches as Magnus reaches his hand towards Seraphina, opening her closed eyes with his fingers to check if the process is correctly working it's way through her system.
" The blackness from her eyes is gone. By the Gods it worked." Magnus tells them, surprised by the sudden outcome. He then realises that he's been staring at Seraphina for a little too long and turns his attention back to Magnus and Hodge. " She's stable for now, let her rest and she'll wake when she's ready." Magnus starts to retrieve his possessions, making his leave and before he leaves the door Jace reaches him.
" You saved her…I-,"
" I didn't do this for your gratitude, Shadowhunter. I did this because an Angel is unique, Seraphina is precious. Never have I thought they existed but she's proved me wrong. Protect her Jace Wayland; in the right hands and in the right company she can do great and good things. But in the wrong hands she can be lethal and could very well destroy anything her mind tells her too. It's all about guidance; just make sure she chooses the right path." Magnus' hand reaches for the door handle, then he stops for a moment turning back to face Jace. " Humans, angels, Shadowhunters they don't just need demon blood to turn them evil, they can do it all on their own." On those last words he goes, leaving Jace, the Shadowhunter in love with an Angel, by himself letting the words of a Warlock change his view on everything he used to know.
