Chapter 9: Dinner with the Ootoris

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~-HKHKHKHKHKHKHKHKHKHK-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Something was about to go down.
Haruhi was not sure why, but she could feel it. It was all around her, in the copious amount of texts she was vaguely answering from her friends (by mutual agreement they were both doing that), in the warm, frequent texts/calls she was receiving from Kyoya, and in the expectant air of her father as he came to visit her, humming as he walked.
Most of all, she could feel it in herself. There was tension building, and she was not sure how she felt about it. After having an effortless relationship with Tamaki (other than avoiding the numerous glomps), she was slightly confused about all that was happening with Kyoya. Tamaki had started as a friend, and now so had Kyoya.
The only difference was that Tamaki had been blissfully unaware of his feelings, and Kyoya was very much in control. How much he had been controlling she had yet to figure out, but she was determined to find out soon. When better than after spending time with his family?
If she was lucky, his family would be in a good mood and might discuss Kyoya's childhood or something else of that nature. On the other hand, given how Kyoya took after his family in his seriousness, she very well may end up learning trade secrets and gossip from the business world.
Either way, she wanted to see Kyoya around his family. He held much respect for his family and honor, and it only grew as he got older and was trusted with more after he graduated from college. Kyoya had intimated to her recently that, if he played his cards right, he might even get to take complete charge of one of the smaller side businesses owned by his family, a great honor indeed. She was enthusiastically hoping for his sake that he would one day.
Haruhi was willing to try the relationship with Kyoya because they were such good friends, but she had not expected it to go deeper so quickly. Some part of her may still have been afraid after the last break-up, but Kyoya was different in almost every way. His manners and care for his friends still shined brightly, just like Tamaki, but he was not demonstrative in the same way. He did not squeeze the life out of her, nor did he feel the need for constant contact.
But, when he did touch her, things were different. Haruhi had felt that when they had gone on their date at the restaurant. She enjoyed being close to him, which was unlike her. Heck, she liked it when his hand touched hers, or when they danced together, and she did not enjoy dancing. When he touched her, she felt the warmth in his hands, the warmth that seemed to come from the same warm heart that was hidden away from most of the world. He cared about her, and she was enjoying talking to him, and looked forward to seeing him more each day. Not seeing him just made her want to see him that much more!
It was strange how that had happened in the short time since the last party, but the more she explored her new feelings for Kyoya, the more she surprised herself. Before she could be run away with her feelings, though, she needed to talk to Kyoya more about what would happen between them. Seeing him interact with his family would help her see what the next step would be. She needed his complete honesty now, very essential to taking the relationship to the next level.
The day before the dinner, her father had surprised her with a visit and a shopping day. She had told him about the dinner the day before, and he had taken it upon himself to make sure that she looked fabulous for all the future in-laws, er, the Ootoris. Haruhi enjoyed spending the day with her dad, and they found a cute, blue dress after three different stores and many twirls in front of her squealing father. His only advice to Haruhi was to be herself.
The only bad part about the day with her dad had been the texts from curious friends. Renge had made it a habit to text every two hours, asking for any new updates between her and Kyoya. After a while, Haruhi agreed to lunch the day after the next engagement party so that she could spill all the beans. Renge was far too interested for her own good, but it was nice to see someone who was so enthusiastic about her and Kyoya.
The guys ranged from wanting all information possible right now (Tamaki) to being happy for her, hoping for something official soon (Hunny). The twins were themselves, pestering her for information, but still questioning her about her own feelings, one of the main reasons why she had been so introspective recently. Hikaru did not want to give up, and Kaoru wanted Haruhi to be careful. Mori tried asking if she was alright or needed someone to confide in, to whom she said no in the best possible way.
When it was finally time for Kyoya to pick her up, of which he had been very insistent on doing, Haruhi had some nerves building, but seeing him sent her mind into more pleasant directions.
Kyoya looked great in his tie and dark blue blazer (he definitely was getting insider information from Ranka), and he looked glad to see her again. He did not take her hand and kiss it, but he took both of her hands eagerly, steady pressure being applied to show he cared. Haruhi lost all her nervousness after that, swept into the new, enjoyable experiences of life, also known as Kyoya Ootori. She was glad to hold his hands and follow him. With that smile and his good looks, she could become quite distracted.
"You look lovely, Haruhi."
"Thank you, Kyoya," she said beaming.
"It's good to see you again."
"Agreed. The phone is very useful when we can't be close to one another, but I like being together in person much more."
"I'm glad we agree about that. Shall we?"
"Let's!"
Despite having talked on the phone earlier that day arranging a pick-up time, the two were at it in the car, talking as though it had been weeks since they had last seen one another. Each time Kyoya looked Haruhi in the eye, a small part of her rejoiced. He was sincerely interested in her, and his eye contact kept him honest.
It was not until they arrived at the Ootori estate that they paused in their easy banter about work and what-not. Haruhi had only been to Kyoya's home once, and that had been when none of the family was there, only Kyoya and the rest of the hosts. Now, she was going to meet them for the first time, save his father.
Both of them had discussed that meeting in detail, but Haruhi was still worried as she could not forget about the one time she had spoken to the Ootori patriarch, sticking up for Kyoya. Both remembered that experience differently, but Kyoya insisted that that was in the past, and now his father was actually curious to get to know her after hearing so much of her. Haruhi was surprised and pleased that he heard so much of her in the first place.
"Haruhi, you are our guest. If you think I'm a good host, wait until you meet the rest of my family. They're all going to love meeting you at last, and my father will be pleased. He hinted that I should bring you in the first place."
Haruhi's mouth made a large "O" before she closed it and scrutinized Kyoya momentarily.
"Well, why didn't you say so? That would've been nice to know sooner."
"I wasn't sure if that would encourage you to come, or not."
Haruhi sighed slightly as she shook her head at Kyoya.
"We're going to have a nice chat after this dinner. I hope you know that, Kyoya."
"I've been hoping and expecting it."
The couple walked in, and Haruhi could see why Kyoya wanted to bring her along. All of his siblings were present, each with a date of choice. All were talking calmly in the main living room, awaiting dinner. Slowly, Kyoya took Haruhi around the room, introducing her to each of his siblings. His brothers were pleasant, as were their wives, pretty, talkative, and glad to have more of a female presence.
Fuyumi was introduced last, as they spent most of the rest of the time talking to her and her husband of several years. She was animated, and she was very curious about Haruhi, trying to ask as many questions as possible, all the while smiling brightly at her favorite brother.
When Kyoya's parents finally entered, Haruhi was taken to speak to them. Kyoya's mother was warm and welcoming, pleased to see Kyoya bring such a nice girl home at last. When it was time to speak the family patriarch, Haruhi's nervousness came back momentarily, but, she was surprised to see a smile on Yoshio Ootori's face, one that reminded her strongly of Kyoya's smile from his hosting days. Like father, like son.
"Haruhi Fujioka. It's a pleasure to see you again after all this time. The time has been good to you."
"Thank you. It's an honor to meet you properly, under much better circumstances."
"Of course. I hope these circumstances will continue for a long time to come. I hope you brought your appetite tonight. Our chefs have taken suggestions from my son in order to find dishes that will surprise you."
"Has he now? That's very thoughtful of him, and I can't say I'm surprised at all by it."
Haruhi took a moment as she said that to look at Kyoya, whose face seemed to develop just the slightest tint of color before going back to its normal fleshy color. She grinned at Kyoya and took his hand, squeezing it, before she finally turned her attention back the eldest Ootori.
"We weren't sure who he was going to bring at first, but he was beside himself once you agreed."
"I'm glad I decided to come. I want to be here to support Kyoya, no matter what the occasion. He has been such a good friend to me the last few months; it's the least I can do."
"Very good. "
Finally, dinner was announced, and everyone headed inside. Haruhi gave Kyoya a look of "We're talking for a very long time tonight", and he only nodded his head slightly as he escorted her in. Then he did the honor of holding out her chair, as did the other brothers at the table.
Thankfully, Haruhi was allowed to sit next to Kyoya, which she preferred. While her host skills were finely tuned and ready, she still wanted to be close to Kyoya, and he seemed to share that sentiment.
The food came, and the family discussion started. Haruhi spent the first half of it observing, trying to understand the dynamic between family members, as well as sampling each dish put in front of her by Kyoya.
Compared to the yellows and whites of the dining room and matching linen tablecloth, the feast in front of Haruhi was a veritable rainbow of colors. There were at least six different sauces, from the normal dark soy sauce to a family secret that involved lemon and green onions in a white sauce. Haruhi enjoyed the latter sauce most, seeing as she had seafood that night, plenty of lobster and crab. The broth that she ate plenty of smelled heavenly, the rich meat flavors brought out well by the seasoning. The rice was the perfect texture for eating, and she enjoyed all of the food thoroughly.
Haruhi learned much of the family pecking order as she watched the businessmen do almost all of the talking. Their partners talked quietly to one another at one end of the table, while the brothers earnestly spoke to their father about what was happening.
Fuyumi added in her thoughts about the structure and people running various departments beneath her brothers, and Kyoya put in his thoughts as well, talking about the numbers and people. Kyoya always waited patiently until his brothers were done speaking, and then he took his turn, not at all bothered by always having to wait his turn. No doubt, he was used to this format by now.
Meanwhile, the parents took on very different roles at the table. Yoshio was in complete control of the conversation, directing it and asking pointed questions about this and that, making sure that they were fully aware of what was happening in their company. His wife was the one who made sure that all of the social functions related to work and charity were given their due consideration, while also asking Fuyumi questions about how the workers were being treated.
Once work was done being discussed, outside businesses and their future were brought in. Haruhi was more familiar with one or two mentioned, so she waited for a quiet moment to speak her piece, if Kyoya did not motion to her to speak when he could steer the conversation to her.
The most interesting company discussed was the one owned by Hunny's family. The merger talks and the money that would be made from that marriage had surprised Haruhi a bit, though the rest of the family did not bat an eye at such money being mentioned. Besides Kyoya who had known Hunny longest, Akito had been the person who believed next longest that the wedding and merger would happen. Several questions were asked about Hunny and Reiko, so Haruhi and Kyoya were sought as subject matter experts, seeing as they were close friends with the couple in question.
When the meal was done, the empty dessert bowl taken from Haruhi, everyone went back into the living room for more conversation and tea. Kyoya was pulled aside by his father, while Haruhi was removed from Kyoya's side by Fuyumi, who wanted to ask more questions.
In the privacy of the study, Kyoya and his father sat in their mahogany and leather chairs to have a short chat. Kyoya had been expecting to be pulled aside briefly, not into the study, which meant that his father was about to say something important. He braced himself unnecessarily.
"My son. You have chosen well, I believe. It seems that your praise of her did not do her justice. She's very bright, and from what I heard of her discussion about business, I can tell that she speaks and listens to you. She's very independent and driven, something I have heard from everyone who knows her. She's an excellent choice for your bride."
That was all that Yoshio said, but it was enough. Kyoya responded back quickly.
"Thank you for your approval. I have high hopes for her."
With that, the two got up, shook hands, and proceeded to join the rest of the group. Little groups on the couches were about, with one of the groups being Haruhi and Fuyumi. While the two men had talked, the girls had an equally enlightening discussion as Fuyumi asked more questions.
After asking about Haruhi's family, her job, and her experience with the Host Club (of course including her standing up to the eldest Ootori), Fuyumi was satisfied that Haruhi was a genuine girl, one who was not trying to use Kyoya. In turn, she answered her own questions after Haruhi answered. She wanted to see her brother happy, so she had made it her mission to discover Haruhi's feelings by the end of the night.
Her last question to Haruhi was what kind of feelings she had for Kyoya. Haruhi opened her mouth to speak, though she did not talk. Instead she looked at her hands, the ones that had held Kyoya's hands briefly at dinner when everyone turned to them to ask about Hunny. She was not sure who reached out first, but they had met in the middle, holding until that discussion was finished. Fuyumi had noticed, and she wanted to know what it meant about Haruhi's feelings. Haruhi eventually smiled and then said that they were new and complicated, and quite strong.
Haruhi had not been expecting that question from Fuyumi, only Kyoya. She had a short answer ready for Kyoya, but she did not know if it was wise to say too much to Fuyumi since she had not talked yet to Kyoya. But, Fuyumi had been satisfied with that answer, even hugging Haruhi because of it.
It was while the two hugged that Kyoya joined them. However, the couple was not allowed to talk to one another, as Kyoya's mother wished to talk to Haruhi briefly, so Fuyumi took the time to talk to Kyoya. Haruhi quickly liked the older woman for she was proper, but she was comfortable where she was, and good company. The two talked easily of what Haruhi had noticed about the family business at dinner, seeing if she had any new perspectives.
Meanwhile, Fuyumi looked smug as she spoke to Kyoya.
"She likes you, a lot."
"How can you be sure, Fuyumi?"
"I'm a woman. I just can tell with Haruhi. She's good for you, and not at all scared of you."
Kyoya chuckled slightly. "Yes, that's for certain. She isn't afraid to speak her mind as she sees it needed. She is a good confidante, and she has a level head that I value."
"Is that all you value of her?"
"No. There's much to be said for her good looks, and her drive for success. She cares about me in a way few people do."
"Do you love her?" whispered Fuyumi.
Kyoya took that moment to stare at Haruhi earnestly, watching the way she easily fit in with his family. With everyone liking her, there was nothing to stop him now, other than time needed by Haruhi. His answering smile to Fuyumi told her all she needed to know.
"Do you know her ring size?"
"Of course. Her father has told me it the last three times that I have spoken to him."
Fuyumi laughed loudly at that comment.
Her laughter drew Haruhi's attention, and she was soon by Kyoya's side, curious to know what was so funny.
"Haruhi, don't mind my sister. She has an odd sense of humor. Did you discuss anything interesting with my mother?"
Kyoya was able to distract Haruhi easily after that. They remained thus distracted until the end of the night, when all got up to leave. Haruhi and Kyoya got up to leave, and they were escorted out by Kyoya's parents. His father escorted Haruhi, while Kyoya escorted his mother.
Haruhi was quick to thank Yoshio for his hospitality.
"Thank you so much for welcoming me into your home tonight. I had a wonderful evening meeting everyone, and the food was amazing. Please send your chefs my compliments."
"I will do so. It seems that you'll have to come back another time to try more new dishes."
"I'm sure more opportunities will arise as I continue to date Kyoya."
"He seems happy with you, more content. You seem to enjoy his company as well."
"I do. I've enjoyed getting to know him much more of late, and look forward to more in the future."
"He may not have as much time in the future to spend with you, though. He may have a new, higher position."
"If he does, then I'll be there to support him every step of the way, however I can. I would not be unreasonable in my desire to spend time with him, especially if he has more work. He is a devoted worker, and I would not be able to keep him away if I tried."
The eldest Ootori smiled and chuckled to himself about the truth, that Kyoya would put aside many things for her. He had already done that at work, and the way he looked at her, she had a lot more power than she gave herself credit for.
"Very well. Thank you for gracing us with your presence, and safe travels back to your home."
"Thank you, the same to you as well."
The two parted on far better terms than they had met all those years ago. Haruhi was satisfied.
Kyoya observed Haruhi and his father carefully. He could guess what his father was saying, and he hoped that Haruhi passed his father's test, whatever it may be. When they were done speaking to one another, both smiled at one another (Haruhi a little more so), and Kyoya led Haruhi into the waiting limo.
It was about halfway to Haruhi's home when Haruhi realized that they were going in the wrong direction to go to her apartment.
"Kyoya, where are we going?"
"You wanted to talk about some stuff, right?"
"Yes, but I thought we were going back to my place to do it."
"It's a cool, beautiful night. I thought we could talk outside."
"At this hour?"
"I have a friend who owes me a favor."
Haruhi was half-expecting to pull up to an ancient park and have a horse-drawn carriage with romantic music ready for them. But, that was not Kyoya's style.
Instead, they were greeted by an elderly gentleman who led them through an older mansion, allowing them both to use the facilities before staying outside for some time. From there, they were taken to the back of the mansion, where large shrubberies seemed to tower over them. They were left to their own devices after that.
"What is this, Kyoya?"
Haruhi was still getting used to the more familiar name, but she liked it. She just was not sure if they were jumping the gun on being so familiar. The tumult of feelings inside of her made her think that it was entirely appropriate, even if her head did not.
"It's a labyrinth, Haruhi. It's one of the largest mazes in our area, and I thought it would be perfect for us as we walked, so we can solve a puzzle together as we talk. There's also a small lake on the other side of this, so we will have a nice view on our walk back, all in complete privacy."
Haruhi smiled at Kyoya's thoughtfulness. Leave it to him to take his girl through a maze for fun. It was private, a great night to be outdoors, so Haruhi was willing to go along with it. She smiled her approval, and Kyoya led her into the maze.
The couple enjoyed the many twists and turns of the garden maze. It helped that each section of the maze had a different type of sweet-smelling flower in it, making it easy to keep track of where they had been. There were cozy, stone benches placed conveniently along the way if they were tired or wanted to observe the pretty surroundings better, as well as smooth cement that made their walk easier on the feet.
The two talked easily as they discussed which way to go, as well as any other topic they thought of. Some time was spent on the dinner that they had just attended.
"Thank you for a wonderful dinner tonight, Kyoya. I really enjoyed myself."
"It's my pleasure, Haruhi. I wasn't sure about a couple of the new dishes, but you seemed to eat everything."
"Your family is also pleasant."
"They are when they want to be. They are still all about business."
"That much I got. They could talk about that for days and probably still find plenty to talk about."
Haruhi found herself smiling at that statement. How they managed that constant stream of business talk was beyond her, but she was glad to witness it in action.
"Easily. They live and breathe business."
"Just like you."
Haruhi looked up at Kyoya with an indulgent smile, while he reached out for her hand again, as if to reassure her. Now and then during the walk, their hands had ended up joined together, each taking turns to reach out to the other. Now there was a particular reason for it, but Haruhi was fine with that.
"It's not my intention to always be absorbed in work, but-"
"But that is how you were raised. You know it best, and I don't hold it against you. I'm glad you're passionate about your work, trying to do your best for yourself, your family, and everyone beneath you. You kept up with Fuyumi just as effortlessly as you did with your brothers, which says something."
"I enjoy my work. But I enjoy other things just as well."
Kyoya looked pointedly at Haruhi, so she prompted him to continue.
"Such as?"
Kyoya's answer was immediate and clear.
"Talking to you."
"Oh."
After a moment, Haruhi added on, "I feel the same way. I've grown to really enjoy our talks, whether on the phone or in person."
"I plan to do much more of that with you, if I get my way."
The twinkle in Kyoya's eyes was unmistakable.
"I may let you some of the time."
Haruhi was happy to play along.
"I expect nothing less of you. You won't let me push you around. The trick will be to convince you that you want the same things as me, and then it won't matter."
Haruhi laughed at that, seeing as she was already on her way in that respect.
"Then I shall keep a closer look-out for your shenanigans and mind games. I'm not afraid of you."
Kyoya smiled before removing his hand from Haruhi's, instead opting to slide his arm around Haruhi and taking hold of her other hand. Haruhi enjoyed the extra warmth radiating from Kyoya, so she snuggled in slightly closer and squeezed his hand.
"Then we're going to get along just fine."
They were quiet for a time after that, as both had much occupying their thoughts. Neither required constant talking, and they were content just being close to one another in that special place.
Eventually, they had to speak again when they came to another fork in the path, but they navigated just fine. It was when they were a little over half-way through the labyrinth that Haruhi decided to bring up what was on her mind.
"Kyoya, why didn't you tell me sooner that your father wanted me to come, fully knowing that I was nervous about the dinner?"
"The way I saw it, telling you would create one of two responses: first, that you would be comforted, and second, that you would be scared that he asked about you specifically. If you were worried about being asked for, I wasn't sure you'd still willingly come. You'd come because you agreed to, but you might not have been as happy about it. I didn't want to take that chance."
"You can trust me on those types of matters. If I wasn't afraid to speak to him before, why would that change now?"
"Because we're dating now."
"I see. Still, I'm not likely to change because of that."
"I'll trust you from now on with that type of information."
"Thanks, Kyoya. I appreciate it. You've already started to tell me little things now and then, but I still feel as though there is much going on behind the scenes that I don't know about."
The twins words from the last party and texts of the previous days came back to haunt her then. How much was Kyoya trying to control?
"There are a few things, yes. There was more leading up to our date, but that was because I wanted it to work out between us. I might have asked our future groom for a couple favors with regard to the party and dancing, though all of it was with the intention of making you happy."
"Even if you knew that I don't enjoy dancing."
"You didn't act like that when we were together."
"No, but that's because you're a superb dancer."
Kyoya grinned at that.
"Why, thank you, Haruhi. Having you in my arms made things more pleasurable."
"Don't let it go to your head, and don't expect that kind of response every time we dance together."
"So that means we'll dance more together? Excellent."
Haruhi sighed in resignation. If it was with him, then she might just learn to enjoy dancing after all. Kyoya looked inordinately pleased with himself.
"But going back to what we were discussing before, you didn't tell me the whole story."
"Did you want me to tell you of my growing feelings for you?"
Haruhi paused, unsure of herself. Would she have accepted him sooner? She liked to think so since they were friends, but she may not have been ready when he first had feelings for her.
"How long have you had those feelings?"
"Since high school."
Kyoya gave Haruhi a chance to blink rapidly before continuing.
"But, I didn't act out on them because I knew Tamaki liked you. It was only after you broke up with him that I allowed myself to hope and plan. Those feelings developed quickly the more I saw you."
"So you didn't like seeing me with Hikaru all the time."
Kyoya's face turned into a grimace before answering.
"It was for the best. You saw him like a brother, and I knew that. I would've preferred it being me, but we needed to become better acquainted first. Now that we've done that, there's no reason not to continue from there."
"But before we can continue, we need to make sure that we understand one another."
"What do you have in mind, Haruhi?"
"We need to know where we stand with one another, what we expect."
"What would you like from me?"
If Kyoya was going to go through with this properly with Haruhi, then he had to open himself up more, be more vulnerable. Haruhi would understand, and she certainly would not take advantage of it. Still, it was not something he enjoyed doing. Her feelings were still developing, but he knew that in time they would come, and that she would tell him, in her usual frank manner.
"No more of this holding back information. We're both mature adults, and you know me fairly well. Give me the benefit of the doubt for the rest of the time. I don't like not knowing the whole story. I know you'll want to plan little things for us to do as a surprise, but I'm not one of those girls from our hosting days. I want the whole truth."
There. It was said. Haruhi felt better, and Kyoya seemed to take it pretty well.
"Anything else?"
"Nothing else that I can think of at this moment. I think it goes without saying that if we need to make a decision, that we do it as a couple."
Kyoya smiled at that, glad that she was thinking ahead. Perhaps things were developing faster than he hoped.
"Of course. I wouldn't have it any other way."
"What do you expect of me, Kyoya?"
Kyoya paused before answering, but there was no hesitation in his voice when he asked.
"I want you to be honest about your feelings for me. I like to think that I can read you, but that isn't always the case. If I don't know, then I won't take things further with us. I don't want to push you. Just be honest with me, especially if there is anything you like or don't like. I'm not perfect."
"I can do that," replied Haruhi.
"And don't be afraid to tell me if I'm working too much. I don't want to neglect you, but I also want to give you space and get work done. That, and it seemed as though that blond idiot did that too much. I don't want to make the same mistake."
That part was essential to him. He was not about to lose her now that he had her.
"So what you're telling me is that you want me to be more honest with you as well."
"Basically, yes."
"I'm happy to do that. It's only fair. Is there anything else?"
"Not that I can think of, but I think we have another problem to discuss, the rest of our friends."
"So they're a problem now?"
"More pest than problem."
Both smiled at the thought of their friends, concerned about them and asking almost every day what was going on between them.
"So now that we know where we stand, we can tell them, all together at once."
"Yes. I tried to see if they had any other time available to meet, but there seem to be conflicts. It will be at the upcoming party."
Of course he had looked into it. He knew everyone's schedule, after all.
"That's fine. I'll be glad to explain it to them at last."
"You and me both. I think we're both tired of giving the vague answers."
"Agreed!"
"After that, we just have to answer all of the questions and mini-interviews that come in the aftermath."
"We'll survive just fine, Kyoya."
It was around that time that the couple finally made it out of the labyrinth. With a full moon hitting the water just right, a little breeze blowing Haruhi's grown-out hair, and no one else in sight, the scene was quite romantic and perfect for the two. Both grew quiet and stared at the water, Haruhi in awe of the water and Kyoya in awe of Haruhi's growing smile.
When both were ready, they started the walk back to the mansion. After a little bit, Kyoya decided to ask what was on his mind.
"Haruhi, are you comfortable with my family?"
Haruhi looked confused, but she answered all the same.
"Yes. I've no reason not to, at least that I'm aware of. They're easy to talk to."
"So you would be alright with going to more family dinners in the future with me?"
"So long as they're not every day. I don't see why not."
Kyoya let out the breath he was holding. That was good.
"The longer we date, the more you'll be expected to attend the dinners."
"I figured as much. But, if you have to put up with my dad's ridiculous antics, I think I can handle some family dinners."
Chuckling, Kyoya replied, "I can 'handle' your father any day. He truly cares, and even if he is over-the-top, he still is not worse than Tamaki."
"That may be."
"There's no may about it; Tamaki wins the prize for most concerned and over-the-top every time."
"You didn't have to deal with my dad every day though."
"Then we'll agree to disagree."
Silence reigned again until Kyoya was ready to ask his next question.
"Do you feel more comfortable with me now?"
"Yes, I do. My feelings, though rather new, are helped much by the fact that we're good friends and I feel comfortable saying what's on my mind."
"Where are your feelings right now, Haruhi?"
"As I was telling your sister, who really cares about you I might add, I fully acknowledge that they're there. I'm surprised by how much they've developed in a week, but it's still complicated. I don't want to rush it."
"How are we rushing it?"
"Kyoya."
That look and word was all she needed to say.
"We know one another well. There's no reason not to."
"I dated Tamaki-senpai for years, and I never referred to him like that."
"Then your feelings for him were not that strong to begin with."
"And the ones for you are stronger?"
"I think they are."
"Considering how many dates we've been on, that's-"
Haruhi stopped mid-sentence when she saw Kyoya take his glasses off and then move in closer. Her brain slowed down and watched him come close to her in slow motion, as his face went from an evil grin to a smug half-smile as he leaned in. Then she saw him put his hands on her face.
The first thing she noted was that his hands were warm, just as they had been when he had been holding her hands a little earlier. His hands were also smooth, and smelled like some sort of cologne that she immediately liked. His face was now less than two inches away, but it occurred to her too late that he was going to kiss her.
By that point, his lips were about to touch hers, and she prepared herself for a chaste peck. However, the rational part of her brain was overpowered by the sensations of Kyoya kissing her and not holding back. There was nothing at all chaste about that kiss that attempted to smash their faces up against one another as his lips became attached to hers, giving deep pressure and taking in the surprised gasp of Haruhi.
At some point, Haruhi closed her eyes and enjoyed the kiss, all sorts of sensations sizzling through her senseless brain.
When they were forced to breathe, Kyoya broke away first, as Haruhi was still stunned. He looked far too happy about that kiss, and Haruhi found herself really mad at him for kissing her to begin with, though she hated him more for stopping. There was something very wrong about that last thought even registering, which only served to make her more incensed.
"Kyoya!"
Even Kyoya could see her pink-tinged face growing darker in the moonlight. He was enjoying this far too much.
"Yes, Haruhi?"
"You, you-"
Why was her mind failing her? Where was the rational part of her, and why did she feel such a strong desire to do him some kind of bodily harm? He really needed to stop smiling like that, or else.
"Yes?"
"Oh, be quiet. Where did you learn to kiss like that?"
"Who said anything about me learning? When you feel strongly about someone, it comes out in many different forms, such as kissing. Surely you know that."
"Yes, I do. But I've never been kissed like that before."
"Once again, my feelings are stronger, as are yours for me; otherwise, you would not respond as such. Does that answer your earlier question?"
Was that why he did that? Yes it was. After experiencing that, it would be hard not to be boyfriend and girlfriend. She was torn between happiness and irritation that he had decided to do that, seeing as she was still feeling the effect of the kiss.
"It does, Kyoya. There's no doubt in my mind now."
"Excellent. I'm glad we finally got to share that. I've been wanting to do that for some time now, and I almost considered doing it again, just to see what you would do."
Haruhi stopped mid-step when she heard that, her indecision running through her brain and eyes.
Kyoya saw the indecision, and decided not to push it any more tonight. Perhaps he could steal one more as he dropped her off. That kiss had been amazing in his mind, totally worth the wait, if only to feel her response and see her glazed-over eyes after.
Because he did not try again, instead picking up the pace of his walking, Haruhi sighed. While her body was severely disappointed by that, the rest of her was glad, as she was not ready for more yet. Instead, she grabbed his right hand, smiling at him as she swung their arms along in pace with their walking.
That rest of the walk was quiet, as both were unsure how to go about with normal conversation after that kiss. Haruhi did not like that at all, and something needed to be done. The trouble was, she still wanted to do him bodily harm, and yet at the same time show him how glad she was that he had kissed her.
Thankfully, the answer came about as she looked at a yellow tulip. It was time to pull a Tamaki.
Right before they entered the mansion, Haruhi stopped walking, causing Kyoya to stop and turn to her to see what was wrong. He saw her smile, but that was all the warning he got. He was unprepared for the sneak attack Haruhi had been planning deviously in her mind. Normally, he disliked Tamaki's glomps, but for once, he enjoyed it thoroughly.
Had Tamaki been able to see the hug, he would have approved heartily. It definitely ranked in the top five closest and best hugs ever seen and experienced.
Finally, the two separated, with Haruhi looking a little guilty.
"Haruhi, where did that come from?"
"You kissed me. I was torn between two very opposing feelings, both of which wanted to touch you in some way. I tried to do both."
"Remind me to kiss you like that every time if I can get that response."
"I doubt you'll need reminding, Kyoya."
"Probably not," he added with a smile.
"Though, I should also mention that Tamaki made me promise to hug you like that once when we did decide to date."
"Did he now? Interesting."
"I had trouble believing that you were interested in me until he mentioned that to me. I reevaluated much then."
"I see. You ready to go home?"
"Yes, I am. I'm ready for bed. Let's go."
The conversation in the car was much easier after that. Haruhi was glad that she had hugged him, and she had a feeling she would be hugging him more often, though nowhere near as tight.
When Kyoya dropped her off, he snuck one more kiss in, much to Haruhi's surprise. This time, though, she kissed him back, making him stop the kiss before it went further.
"Good night, Haruhi. I'm looking forward to more repeats of this as much as humanly possible. When should I pick you up for the next engagement party?"
"An hour before works."
"I'll see you then, unless you want me to come and surprise you with a visit."
"I'd rather you just call before and then see me."
"I can do that."
"I look forward to your call, Kyoya. Good night!"
That night, both lay in their beds, reviewing the day's activities. And if both happened to dwell on the very end of the evening, then so be it. Both had very happy dreams that night.
Author's Notes: I make no apologies for the fluff whatsoever. Just assume from here on out that each chapter will have fluff of some sort in it, whether related to this happy couple, or to the soon-to-be-married couple. I love wedding fluff so much! Next chapter, we'll get to see the true fallout from this decision.
Also, it has been a month since I last posted a chapter. I'm so sorry about the long wait! Inside of me, I was languishing because I didn't have the time or energy to write my beloved fanfiction, and one should never let it build up too long, lest stuff happen. It felt so good to write again! Thanks for being so patient, and for all of your wonderful feedback! I really appreciate it all; it makes me smile so much. There's only four chapters (including an epilogue) until this story is done, so stay tuned and thanks so much for reading!
Rei Eien: Yay! Thanks so much for telling me! I'm so happy you're loving it! I like both sides of Kyoya, human and Shadow King, and I'm trying to sneak in some human moments where I can. It makes me so happy imagining that part of him with Haruhi. The idea for Tamaki and Renge is intriguing, and I have ideas for it. Look for something next chapter related to those two. Thanks for reviewing and reading!
Destinies Entwined: Fluff for the win! It makes everything better. Their ducking out was unfortunate but needed, seeing as they still needed to iron out a few things. Good thing they like long walks. Thanks so much for letting me know, and for reading! I'm glad you're enjoying it!
Luxartisan: Aww… thank you so much! It would not have been possible without your help every step of the way. I'm so glad you liked that chapter, as it was my basis for everything before it. I'm so glad that everyone stayed in character, as I was trying to do. My muse likes to create excuses for fluff, haha. The wait for this chapter was a little long, so thanks for the big poke! It's probably out a week sooner because of you. Thanks for reading and for all your encouraging words!
InkWoven: Right on! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that being equals is important. I imagine him saying that quite easily to her. Thanks for the encouragement and for reading!
Riku'sbride21: Isn't that interesting how that works sometimes? I didn't see them as a couple at first either, but after reading a couple fanfic, I'm a full believer. I'm glad it's so convincing! Thanks so much for taking the chance to read, and for reviewing! Everything helps.
: It's all good! I'm the one who should be apologizing for lateness. Awesome! Yay for cuteness overload! It's only going to continue from here on out. Yes, finally! Not everything works out the way we expect, as Kyoya now knows. He has grown up a little, and is very interested in Haruhi, which is my excuse for why he acts as he does. I tried to make it believable, so I'm glad you're okay with it. Don't worry, Ranka won't be disappearing any time soon, and that's a promise. Thanks so much for reading, and for the review!
Shipperhere: Yay for lots of cute fluff! Aww, thank you for the compliment; I really appreciate it! I'm glad you decided to read it, too! It's a little later than I wanted it come, but it's here now, so I hope you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for reading and for reviewing!
