Unexpected
[Sorry for the delay my life has been difficult lately but here's chapter 9]
It took a short time the Sir Mordred to fetch his shirt from his brother's chambers, just as he was leaving the room to rejoin Merlin and Arthur, Mordred spotted the old war map scroll still sitting on the desk and realized that without it his older brother would be wondering around aimlessly.
He swiftly yet carefully rolled it up and ran to join his king and brother.
It took the young knight a little time to catch up to Arthur and Merlin. When he arrives he is greeted by nod a friendly pat on the shoulder, the uninjured one of course.
"Brother, you forgot this" he then hands Merlin the scroll.
"I'd lose my head if it weren't attached" Merlin comments lightheartedly while Arthur snorts
"We know" Mordred teased.
"Well then shall we?" the court warlock inquired the knight and king nodded and they proceeded to follow the map deep down below the dungeons far deeper than Arthur even knew existed they finally reached a large cave syste(Kilgarrah's cave)
"I had no idea this cave sat beneath Camelot this whole time" Arthur exclaimed with a tone of astonishment in his voice.
"I doubt your father even knew of it's existence either" Merlin stated solemnly."Now the map says we need to get across this chasm"
They begin scanning for possible routes across and after about fifteen minutes of searching they came up with nothing.
"When your people wanted to hide something they did it well" the king muttered.
Then Sir Mordred spotted something.
"Look here, an old rune scape" the other two rush to the younger Emrys' side and true to what he said, there was tablet inscribed with an ancient set runes.
"It says, to those who wish to enter this place must display Wind's might but beware within." Merlin read; translating the Runic text.
"It sounds as if wind magic is needed to open the pathway, this will be challenging Wind spells have never been by strong suit" the mystic knight admitted with a hint of embarrassment in his deep tones.
Arthur gazed at his youngest knight with awe, here was a knight admitting to a fault in his skills many of the knights that served under Uther never would have admitted such a fact.
"No need to worry Mordred, luckily wind element is something that has always come easily to me" the elder Emrys stepped forward faced the cavern and began incanting a spell
"Kaze no chikara ga jibun jishin o shimeshi, watashi o tasuke ni kite"
Merlin's eyes flash gold as a powerful wind started to blow in the cavern.
The wind was so powerful it was in danger of blowing Mordred and Arthur in to dark abyss of the cave.
Thinking quickly Mordred performs a spell of his own to protect himself as well as his king.
"Kidrui genso; sutonsufishirudo"
A with twinkle of gold in his eyes the young knight raised a dome of solid rock around himself and King Arthur.
At first it didn't look like Merlin's spell was working but then a bridge shimmered into existence.
It was simple made of white stone it spanned the whole expanse.
"Arthur, Dred it worked" Mordred lowered the dome and he and Arthur quickly stood beside Merlin.
"Let's go but beware of traps" the warlock warned as they proceeded onto the bridge and just as Merlin warned a cascade of of fireballs due to King Arthur unwittingly setting of a booby trap were soaring towards them.
The young knight once again displaying a knack for fast thinking
"Chikyu yoso Gaiabaria"
Mordred stamped his foot on the ground said the spell a circle of rock slabs rose in front of them.
The fireballs hit the slabs and explode with frightening force so much so that Mordred slid back about two feet.
"You have a really quick wit Sir Mordred, color me impressed" Mordred blushed at his King's praise as he dropped the slabs of stone.
" Thank you my lord"
Merlin smiled his younger brother seemed to have inherited the Emrys House's sharp intellect.
"Let's go before any more are fired"
They waste no time dashing across the rest of the bridge.
Once they are safely on the other side the bridge vanished. T
hey turn around a see a beautiful arch-way it was made of a fine polished white marble with gold etching in the columns at the center of arch's bend was a silver soaring phoenix emblem, the same that adorned the Emrys brother's boots.
Merlin gets a sense of familiarity.
"I think I may have been here before"
Arthur had a look of uncertainty on his face while Mordred wore more of a amused expression.
"You should, I remember this place too"
Arthur looked at his youngest knight with more intrigue and couldn't help but notice how Mordred's curly black hair seemed to sit just perfectly atop his head and it looked so soft Arthur was tempted to reach out and touch it, not that he would say that out loud.
"Come on lets see where this arch leads" Arthur said to try to rid his head of these alarming thoughts.
They nod and venture through the archway, the instant they set foot beyond the threshold they are transported to a small hallway.
"Where are we?" Arthur asked as he did not recognize the surroundings.
Mordred chortled
"Follow me your highness" he led the two out of the hallway what they saw made all three men's jaws drop.
They were standing in an antechamber of what looked like a small tomb or temple.
It was a magnificent place, strong granite columns stood strategically placed to support the roof.
The walls were decorated with tapestries, carvings and paintings.
Ahead a large door made of a silvery metal that looked akin to silver but at the same time it held with the strength of steel and this was just the antechamber.
"This place is glorious and what exactly is that door made of" Arthur stated with hushed awe in his voice.
Mordred and Merlin snapped out of their stupors
"It's made of Riddermark Skarn" answered Merlin "Riddermark is one of four natural metals that have a magical resonance of their own, aside from Riddermark there is also Kazad-Skarn, Calenard-Skarn, Eoglinas-Skarn. We Emrys were quite fond of Calenard most of our weapons were forged of it."
They then proceeded to the door and with some effort managed to pull it open.
The three crossed into the main chamber and it turned out not to be tomb or temple but a large archive.
Merlin and Mordred's eyes widen as they realize what this place is.
"Arthur...I think we've found, The Great Library" Mordred exclaimed in a breathless voice.
"The Great Library?"
Merlin responded
"Our house were pursuers of knowledge and created many archives and repositories but none were as great and as well known as The Great Library" the passion in Merlin's voice sent shivers down his companion's spines.
Mordred got a strange feeling as he turned and looked at another Riddermark door this one smaller.
His curiosity peaked he strides over and opens the door which led to a large chamber, it was wide open with intricate designs drawn on the floor.
The young druid recognized them as rune circles; there were three in all, in the center of said rings were a trio of large crystals
"Hey Merls, Arthur! I've found something" he called beckoning his comrades.
Merlin and Arthur were there is a flash.
"Wow Mordred, you found one of the repositories and...crystal prisons too"
Arthur eyed his court warlock
"Prisons?"
Merlin nodded
"We used them more for preserving research materials but in extreme cases people could be put in them, you see inside those crystals is an isolated universe that stands outside of time, so someone could be in there for years, even centuries"
Mordred began inspecting the large crystals two of the three were empty but the third had someone in it.
The young knight could not make out who it was since he was facing the opposite direction. Mordred walks around until he can see that its a person, but the person is too small to be anything other than a child.
He spies closer and can just make out the child's red hair and face.
Mordred looks upon the youngster since feels like he should know him, after a few moments Mordred's eyes go wide as the memory clicked into place.
"Merlin, you need to see this" his older brother hears the urgency in his voice a quickly answers his little brother's call.
"What's wrong brother"
Mordred simply gestured to the boy in the crystal.
Merlin stands beside the young knight and peered into the crystal after a moment he realized what his brother meant. The court warlock's eyes fill with tears.
"...S-S-Sasori?"
Arthur walked up confused
"Who is Sasori?"
Mordred patted his brother's shoulder and responded
"Sasori is Merlin's...son"
